Hey folks, I've been working on this guy in school for a while now, any tips on making the cloth not suck? I cant seem to anchor it into the waistpiece without the cloth clipping in the simulation! :(

pior: i love your style man, the proportions and poses are just out of control, so fun and expressive. great stuff.

Calix: everything is looking good at the stage you have it, one thing that throws me a bit is the torso looks like that of an athletic adult, but with the thin limbs the overall looks adolescent like a 15-17 year old, interesting effect dunno if it was intentional but eh, might work itself out as you get to work on the legs and arms more, great work on the shoulders.

I played with lighting capabilities in the Leadwerks Engine.
First of all I rendered one of my basic assets with Maxwell renderer (unbiased offline renderer) to get a realistic image. Then I set up a scene with this asset and ground texture to match the look of the Maxwell render image.

After I matched them I added other assets to my scene. I think it tunred out nice. Had no time or pleasure to use additional color cards to match it more. :)

heh, I just didnt want to leave it out. It swaps with the g-launcher in reality. I'll go back to reference and take a look at the mags. I never thought about it until it was pointed out.

By the looks of your work you would know fire arm accessories better then me, what do you mean by charging handle. I can only assume it means something about close quarters combat situations. Thanks for the comments

The use of tris is a bit silly, you need less tris the smaller the curve, you have it set up the opposite way.

Ruz: Pretty good for your 1st gun. Small crit; I would replace the smoothing groups with hard bevels.

Snowfly , nice as usual . few crits though. The girls leg looks a little thick, almost manly and the guys bicep has weird issues as thought the bicep is pointing too much away from his body.

Perhaps his eyes could be set further back in the skull or is that just the look you were going for.

Hey Arsh yeah youre totally right, thats exactly how shes supposed to end up! Problem is that the green leg is a cover up of a skinnier version, whereas the other (pink) one has not been covered in wax yet. Indeed, the hip on the right of the picture is supposed to be up ; torso tension is supposed to be on the right, compression on the left. So yeah exactly what you pointed out haha.

Steven. It kind of seems like he has a face on his face (The mouth-nose area). I think that area could have been simplified a bit. Like a big huge mouth or something.

I'm also not a fan of the half circle thing on his forehead but I do like the rest of him. I think the shape of his head, ears, cheekbones and eyes work very well together. I can totally picture a bat-muscular-ogre-body kind of thing for the rest of his body.

Been slowly... slowly working on recreating figaro castle from ff6. Got most of the blockout done with other textures, just finished the main doors used throughout the area. Not an exact replication of the original, but I'm giving myself some creative freedom. I may go back and redo the main metal background part, but for now I just did a po on my zb sculpt to see how I may texture it.

Yeah, that whole face-thing is supposed to be some kind of extra-sensory organ... or something like that. The nose, and the fore-head semi-circle, and the fleshy inlets on top of his head are all one system. But if i do do a full bodied critter based on this, I will probably take your advice and alter a few things... it seems to be hitting people weirdly.

Thanks for the input!

I'm kinda new to hard surface modeling (and max as well) and this is my second try. Based on a concept (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_B2vs1_WiGXI/SQwoRdaoNzI/AAAAAAAAAHs/5pMLtRoNT9Q/s1600-h/har-v.JPG) by fellow polycounter Nick Carver (http://nickcarver.blogspot.com/). Hope to turn it into game rez soon. And yep I rendered it with turbosmooth off (it would take a decade to render with smooth on).

Yeah i was actually the one that made alchemy's use popular here on polycount at the start of the last dom war, buit i dont really like it that much any more as it tends to produce results similar for most people, its good for making base silhouetes and random shapes but thats about it. Where as the thing i linked to is an experiment into procedural drawing, where when 2 lines are drawn together shading is made up in between it. Imo, it is seriously rude to call that thing an alchemy like...

Some sort of a stylized anatomy study ... 1/6th=30cm, started in sculpey trying different mixes (left) but the buildup is just waaaay slow with that thing. So I switched to castilene (right) = some sort of wax. It's a hundred times faster to work with but gives less of a fleshy feel to things. So I might end up layering some sculpey back on top of everything to get that one final realistic touch ...

Also need to beef up the leg on the right, I want more of a spaceboot feel.
And the head is temp, bit too small really... oh and yeah I cheated - this part is a cheap low quality 3D print, good enough as a placeholder :P

Fun stuff

Im really looking foward to seeing this worked on further. excellent stylized anatomy! very inspirational. thanks for posting!

Hey man, I looked up Lintels and do you just mean like a piece of trimming above the garage doors?
Argh. Sorry for the late reply.

Yep! They're usually just big beams of concrete or metal, which support the weight of the bricks above, and stop them falling into the hole that the door or window sits in. A door/window frame won't typically hold the weight, y'see.

*EDIT* Photo (http://www.buffaloah.com/a/DCTNRY/l/lintel.jpg). Notice this one's splayed. Normally, they'd be as wide at the bottom as they are at the top (so it's wider than the door's width.)

How about people submit tutorials and stuff for the book, and someone manages it, decided what to keep, offer suggestions to lacking submitted content, or something along those lines.

Half the money should go to the site, half goes to some organization or charity (and some for the poor soul who spends months putting it together).

The polymere parts looks somewhat olive to me, whereas they should be black.

Some minor inaccuracies i noticed, such as the frontcap of the pso scope.
the pipe is a bit too thick and actually has the same turn/clip closure thingy like the battery cap at the back of the scope ;)

might wanna add some horizontal streaks on the cockinghandle/bolt as its a frequently moving part. it also shouldnt look THAT worn, its usually a flat polished part.

I think what you're seeing is that the cylinder I modeled is a 5 shot whereas what you have in mind might be a 6. A colleague said the same thing. I might create a 6 shot just to remove the confusion.

i cant decide whether i think this is cool or weird... which is probably a good thing. if it's meant to be a shotgun the rifling is pretty redundant. Is it based on a concept?

GCMP
03-17-2010, 03:48 AM
No, I'm not working to any concept although I did look at some shotgun and pistol reference for basic sizing and mechanics, apart from that it's all being made on the fly.
The idea I had in my mind before starting was a heavy duty sniper rifle with alternate firing modes, this was after seeing a you tube video on the war in Iraq where a soldier was using a 50cal sniper to take out insurgents in a tall building.

Still trying to work out what I'm going to do with the side vent things, whether it should have those standard veins or maybe make them into lights.

Hi Res complete and only tweaks to the Normal map remain before I start texturing. Comments and crits are appreciated...especially before I start texturing :)

Low Res and Larger images here: http://web.me.com/zerafian/Site/MainPage.html

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4015/4440126406_2292f43e16_o.jpg

nice stuff zeraf. I think there are a few edges here and there which are maybe too sharp/hard....hard to tell without looking at your ref exactly, but just by looking at your low poly bake some of those edges are not picking up as well as they could. Another thing with the low poly bake on your site and with a lot of your work in general i notice is some bad aliasing....for bakes especially it makes it harder to read them and I think giving a proper render would go a long way :)

Found some more time to work on this guy again.
Almost done for the high-res I think.

http://i40.tinypic.com/ipa82q.jpg

I'm no pro but I'd say his "package" is a bit big. The quads hang a bit like fat, I'd tighten them up. His biceps look to elongated and his head is a bit small on his shoulders. He doesn't look powerful to me honestly. But a good model don't get me wrong.

ericv: Thanks man...I agree totally I found this out first hand. It seems if bevel to close to the original edge the normal map has trouble interpreting which side to place to smoothness of the edge. On a lot of my edges I kept the bevel to sharp as you said and it caused some issues. As I started to finish I began to widen that bevel so the smooth wrapped around each edge giving it that smooth look. As for the AA look thats mainly a lack of skill in representing a normal mapped piece. I need to find me a decent tutorial on rendering out a normal mapped object in maya...I suppose I could just take it into unreal though *shrugs*

I'd suggest a muzzle break if that thing's meant to be shooting a massive bullet

Hmmm not a maya man myself, but there should be some kind of AA filtering options that you can play with I would hope. Thats how it is for max anyways, just go to the drop down and select one from a bunch of filters

HI all. a personal project of mine. I am trying to do all the game chrs and asset for a handheld console game. lol I don't know will I ever do it. Doing it because I have been getting a lot of freelance work on iphone games for under the minimum wage. I got a little annoyed by how many times that happen, and decided to go forth and do this. lol goodnight all

I decided to undertake a rather large environment project. Basically it is an ancient/abandoned Shinto Shrine (Japanese Shrine). This will be filmed so I need to get everything animated in a realistic fashion and I need to blow life into the scene. So It's not quite as simple as making an environment still. I can post some quick concept screenshots of the general idea I made in max if people are interested :)

*edit* Happy birthday Sampson!

ahaha, don't think my illustration sketches will be noticed in the middle of such nice 3dees...but, hey...it's what I'm working on. :-)
This one is a CD cover, based in the music The Devil went down to Georgia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDm_ZHyYTrghttp://amonsteria.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/dadoalmeida_georgiadevil_guides.jpg
Anyway. With these steps turning ideas in drawings is getting more easy every time. Really suggest people to try this approach when dealing with Illustration stuff.

god3ila: I totally forgot about this character! The eyes are really detracting away from him looking good. The stuffed moogle he rides is fine (since he's supposed to be a toy), but Cait Sith's eyes have no structure to them. Even when they're shut there are still eyes and bone there.
