Hey Johny sure here goes
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/pior_speedrobot_007.jpg

As you can see there is no real shape solving going on at the moment, just throwing very quick splines extrudes and booleans together to fill in volumes. I wont take that step much further - next is building a mini library of primitive shapes to define the visual vocabulary of that guy so that repeating them all over him unifies the design a bit more (bolts, capsules, also the look of the seam lines between panels, and so on ...). At this point it's also a good time to send some screengrabs of current state to photoshop in order to get a final hybrid 2D/3D concept.

Also I might do some 3DCoat voxel sculpting on this since even such a dirty geo might import fine in it! That would let me define the surface quality of the green parts very easily. Don't want to go too sculpy on it tho.

Working like this makes robots VERY fast and easy to build, I think!

Hey guys! I don't post on here much, but now seems like a good time to start!

Here's a w.i.p of a building I'm working on, I'm not very familiar with modelling buildings so I would really appreciate some feedback and general advice.

I want the LOD to be quite high so it can viewed quite close up from all round.

Not sure if I should create my own thread but I'll just post it here for now. :)

Trying doublesmooth method. This model was more than 2 years old, and it took me like, less than eight hours or so to make it into a high poly, make it more accurate, make a new low poly from the high poly, UV that low poly, and then bake normals and AO.
http://www.imagedumpwitheasy.com/uploads/51d7556a5e.jpg

Ged
03-03-2010, 02:47 AM
whats this doublesmooth method?

Kitteh
03-03-2010, 02:56 AM
Basically, you take a traditional low poly model, with smoothing groups, apply a turbosmooth (make it smooth by smoothing groups), do anywhere from 1-3 iterations (controls edge softness), then add another regular turbosmooth. You get a pretty good high poly model with way less effort and way less control edges. The only extra edgeloops needed are to make long polygons subdivide properly (and it has to be all quads). Harry's written a maxscript for it.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I realized with these last couple paintings that sometimes it's good to step back and have a couple weeks break from making art. Let all the things you've learned recently congeal a bit in your brain before you try and apply them, and let your creation muscles relax for a while.

Slaught, nice bitchbot, I've always loved your low poly characters, great shapes.

at first glance, I like the composition, and overall feel, but once I take a look, everything seems abit simple, maybe some trim work on the weapons/shields and something to differentiate the soldiers from one another.

EDIT: forgot to mention, the suspension is based off of the elises, but im thinking about texture space and how I will save it atm, so in the end it will be loosly based on the elise

Thanks for the input, Shrew! It's for a project i'm trying to get off the ground on the UDK. I do want to have some different characters in there like you said, i just haven't gotten to it. I need to rework the texture on the characters and i need to make some proper textures for the weapons. At the moment all the weapons are using the same texture, which is just 4 materials on one image. I'll make some proper textures for them soon. :D

A few inaccuracies: The ejection port is too short (heightwise), the indent below the ejection port on the lower receiver seems too big and shaped wrong, the trigger guard is too thin, the stock's edges are too hard, the end of the gas tube (thing above barrel in front of foregrip) shouldn't be rounded like that, the foregrip should connect to the lower receiver better (on the bottom of it), the bottom of the receiver should be flat with rounded edges, not curved as you have it modeled, and could you show a picture of the back as well?

There are more inaccuracies, but those are the main ones, I think.

WOW thanks this really helps. I will certainly go back and look into these. About the gas tube I couldn't really find any good ref shots of it so I kinda guessed (will go do some more research).

Also Harry now that I look back at the front sight it is all types of wrong.

warby: I think it looks chaotic enough, but with everything overlapping weirdly, and a lot of action going on, Its hard to see what is where.
like the light blue area, I thought it was a cave entrance with a floor and everything, but now it looks like there isn't a floor until a ways back, but its still confusing because I don't know how far back, or in what relation to everything else it is.
Really love the angular buildings and how you framed the doorway with the lava flows, good art style:)

Thanks for the crits, Neox. I was trying to make the skin a little more interesting for the viewer, hence the exaggerated splotches, freckles, and pores, but perhaps I got a bit too carried away. I'm not skilled enough to achieve proper realism, so I'm veering a little more towards hyperrealism at the moment.

Great work on the Airborn character, by the way. Lots of personality.

actually, Piņo and his Grandpa already have a basic facial rig, the intro sequence will have some facials, but i doubt we can rebuild all other anims with facials till next sunday, when our internal milestone for the standalone demo is, i'm not quite sure whats happening after that.

first of all i'd say increase the saturation, and after that work on the shader or use another one, that death looking shade to black really doesn't help the piece, well and give him an eye texture :)

"Now Entering Level 1..."

Ah. It's a PC Game. Didn't know much of the PC antologies, but the game is fun.

I agree with the Neox points. Definitively, for a common cartoon look, you have to avoid such black shadows and play more with variations of the colors (not just a type of green for the entire char). Since you have used Normals, I think you can push the style a little further, simulating some real surfaces like the wet skin (frog or fish references), hair and the plastic of the hands (adding a specular map, for instance).

I used DosBox to play the shareware demo and rip that little sprite, maybe a good reference for the swatches of colors.

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/5148/cosmorip.gif
ps.: note how saturated the green shadows are, a quick and dirty way to simulate SSS (?!).

That's it. Nice too discover simple and effective game chars. Thanks for that.

Ahaha thanks dudes, I didn't expect replies that fast (or at all really)
so I took it into max and used xiolul shader (was using default max dx shader) and cranked the half lambert so the blacks werent so black ;)
I didn't oversaturate it any, but, I did play with the colour of the spec map and it seems to have helped a lot. I even did a quick slap-on eye texture... I come back to polycount to check for feedback and it's like you guys were watching me the whole time ahah

Since you mentioned colouring the shadows dado, i'm interested to see how he'd look with a zany psychadelic envmap used as a base for faked ambient illumination... Or even just some screencaps of the original environments.
I actually really love the whole art style of cosmo, one of the best uses of the 16 colour palette for PC. Maybe i should make some little bits of environment...
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/7017/cosmof.jpg

edit: looking again after spending a while looking at just the original sprites, i think i will crank the saturation as suggested

Messing around with Zbrush's 2.5d tools to create tiling textures. This is more of a test, I took a sphere and used the planar cut tools to turn it into an irregular geometric shape. I stamped it down all over the canvas and used the blur tool with zadd to blur the seams. Then I used some crack alphas to detail it.

I'm still working out the kinks but once I'm done I'll see about putting up some video tutorials.

larolaro

Neox , great work man,

I know its far too late but, that guy doesn't really have any characteristics of an old man at all apart from his face. While an old man could be chipper and energetic he would still have a hunched "old man" composure and veiny cobbley hands.

If you cover up his face it looks like a 8-10 year old boy id say.

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8590/garrid.png

While the technical aspect, modelling sculpting and texturing is absolutely top notch (and i mean that sincerely), there has been a whole lot lost in translation from the concept.

Proportionally the character is a bit skewed too. The main character also seemed to suffer from this as i mentioned last time.

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/5194/garrid2.png

Mentioning this stuff is pretty much useless since you're pretty much finished up with it, but i thought perhaps it might help to see it from a different perspective, i dunno :p

Feedback

First of all thank you for the feedback, so i take the time to give you a mor complex answer :)

So let me explain some things, basicly he is using the same rig as another already made character, which was made 2.5 years ago, so i have to live with mistakes that have been done then, but changing the whole rig and changin all the animations that come with it is no option for me.
The pose is just a bind pose, i see no use in already posing him hunched as every contrary movement will be a problem then. If there is an issue with the bindpose, it is the arms beeing rotated too much downwards, but for his range of movement its okayish, not perfect though.

Posing him later with the animation, is definitely not problem, in fact, besides beeing still pretty energetic, this one is sitting on his chair most of the day, maybe we even let him be bound to the chair, not sure yet (the image before was just to test the skinning a bit), therefore he is pretty skinny, he doesn't move much, so he is not very muscular at all, to compensate that he is wearing pretty wide and saggy clothes. The opposite would have been to make him fat, would be very funny too but we couldn't reuse the rig, and some of his anims have already been done with the old character.

The hands are just taken from that other character, that one is walkin with a stick ingame, and his hands are not very energetic posed, they are not very skinny boney either, so i could agree with you on that, the question in that area was more of, how much detail (polygon and texturewise) i should put into the hands.

The biggest part of his hands is covered by a glove, and won't be seen upcloase at all, so i decided back then (3 years ago, so i have to live with mistakes that have been done back then also ;) ) not to put too much detail onto his hands, they have the same pixel ratio as everything else on the 1k texturesheet, so making it veiny is not much of an issue.

however here is a closeup shot of his hand

http://nonpublic.airborn-game.com/wip/neox/hand.jpg

so i don't think it has to have much more veins and cobbles, also cobbles are a thing that stylewise is a bit of an issue, i don't want to end up with super wobbly characters like the old ones in some of the ghibli films. So what i could do instead is work in a bit more agespots and a few more wrinkles around the joints, but i doubt it will be that visible, but i'll do that.

Ok next the proportions, as said before he wears pretty thick, too big and saggy clothes, so let me show you another image. Another part is definitely the stupid UT in Editor Fov, if pretty hard to get a good shot of a character within the editor, i don't know how to change it, inagme we have another less distorted FOV and in Sequences special cams with even less distortion.

http://nonpublic.airborn-game.com/wip/neox/proportions.jpg
sidenote: armposition is a bit more upwards as there was a glitch with the rig, the clavicles on the grandpa rig are rotated a bit upwards, so its not totally the same as the porportioned basemesh

As you see the character itself is rather small, no really around 8-10 years but also not a 8 heads standatized humanoid, the soldiers have that size, they are all larger then the townfolks are. Also to emphasize their position in the world. besides the overall bigger scaled head, the soldiers are pretty much the most human sized characters
http://nonpublic.airborn-game.com/wip/neox/overallproportions.jpg

As for Piņo the main character, i totally agree has has quite some proportion issues going on, but thats the thing with such a slow paced project, i mean he is from early 2007, would be bad if i would be on the same level as i was back then, but i cannot recreate every thing every now and then things are already way too slow :/

so i hope i made some things clearer, and thanks again for taking the time!

@zwebbie: will do that, you are absolutely right.

@harry: i totally agree with ged

Aesir: The little spaceship/hovership that you have looks like it could be a really nice piece, but unfortunately...it's cropped on a background that is similar in value to your textures. Throw some contrasting background for the presentation of that one.

Snowfly: Love the colors of the first one and love the feeling of some awesome action of the third one. Great stuff!

For me at least. This is a head I made. Need crits, pointers, a hand grenade tied to head with a bow... Let me know what you think.

This character is named Laurel. She's for an upcoming animation project. I'm trying to develop a Standard of topography for the characters so that the rigging and animation processes won't be too different amongst the characters.

She's based off of pictures of http://www.z1mm.deviantart.com. I asked her if she minded, and I think she was a little flattered by the concept, so she said yes.

Miche... not bad model but the texture looks really low-res, and the bump map is waaaaay too strong - just because you use something a lot doesn't mean it suddenly gets really bumpy... ;)

Miche
03-10-2010, 04:26 PM
MoP: I will definitely make som changes to fix that.. Probably went a little mad on the xnormal filter.. Thanks dude!

vcool
03-10-2010, 04:28 PM
Miche, the texture is too uniform. It looks like you just multiplied some high-contrast metal texture by AO and added some scratches to places and then ran it all through the normal filter.

It doesn't look like a gun, it looks like something built from some uniform material. A statue would look similar.

Anyway, the model is OK but the texture needs moar work.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/pior_sculpt_anatomystudy_002.jpg

Some sort of a stylized anatomy study ... 1/6th=30cm, started in sculpey trying different mixes (left) but the buildup is just waaaay slow with that thing. So I switched to castilene (right) = some sort of wax. It's a hundred times faster to work with but gives less of a fleshy feel to things. So I might end up layering some sculpey back on top of everything to get that one final realistic touch ...

Also need to beef up the leg on the right, I want more of a spaceboot feel.
And the head is temp, bit too small really... oh and yeah I cheated - this part is a cheap low quality 3D print, good enough as a placeholder :P

Fun stuff
