duncan, now that is awesome, well done.
ah ten days in london, very relaxing, was nice meeting some polycount guys there, even if it was only for a very short amount of time, gave me the inspiration to go back to airborn
so here is a very quick blockout for the next airborn character Garrido, the grumpy lighthousekeeper

It's a lighting test I'm doing, to, well, get better at lighting. It's not realtime, but it is pure simple scanline with no light tracer or anything, just placing all lights by hand. I hope to gain a better understanding of light by doing this.

Love the forms of that face, Neox.
I'm very happy with the turnaround time on this character. I started modeling yesterday morning and finished up with renders this evening. Rendering is wonderful for hiding sloppy sculpting ;). Sculpted and textured in Mudbox, rendered in Modo.

phew, lots of problems with this guy. Somehow somewhere his pivot offset got screwed up, resulting in not being able to sculpt with symmetry.
Tried lots of ways to get his guy working again, which eventually worked out for the most part.
Only his hand and foot (hidden atm) are still screwed. Since that'll be mirrored anyway I can live with that.
Anyway, spend ton of time on techy salvage stuff, now finally back to sculpting.

xvamp: you might realing the right leg (his right leg). it seems like he's sitting on something right now because his leg is to far forward. apart from that (minor) thing I really like it!
xvamp, like efreak said, the lines now make it look like his pelvis area is way long.
Also, the way his lower and upper arm are rotated is a bit funky, on the left, his bicep is straight and does not flow towards the twisted lowerarm.
Nice piece man :D

Thanks guys! I figured no environment art portfolio is complete without some cartoony mushrooms :P I"ll probably make one or two more just for shits and giggles, the shape is so simple but wildly variable in terms of proportion and texture/material there's really a lot of fun possibilities.
Makoa, thats a nice study man, but I would have to say don't be afraid to get a little more saturated with the mid tones on the body.
lovely paintings xvampire and makoa. Makoa, she reminds me of the russian chick (http://www.contactmusic.com/pics/lc/hollywood_parade_301109/lesley-anne_down_2675341.jpg) from the The Pink Panther Strikes Again :D

WIP of my girlfriend for her birthday next week. Still trying to sort out if I want to stylise the torso proportions. (don't mind the hair or the sloppy masking, still just blocking out the torso... also wondering if I should do full-figure, or bust)

updated to address some of Mezz's points (thanks!)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/778345/shyanne-wip3.jpg
If you're making this for your girlfriend, I'd suggest smoothing out the harsh line of the 'muzzle' (the one extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth). You also might want to play down the dark shades under the eyes. Yes, they're probably showing up in the picture you're working from (I assume you're working from a pic?) but if this is a present for her, go ahead, take some artistic license in making her look extra pretty :P
The boobs also look like they end a little too high up to be anatomically correct.
Nice start, though! :)

BradMyers82
02-25-2010, 10:17 AM
Firebert: That's looks sweet man! I love the face!
My only suggestion would be to possibly give some of the black metal areas a slightly lighter color, and maybe work on some stronger specular highlights on the edges so they stand out more. Its just really hard to see any detail in the suit, because its all so dark. I think some specular highlights on the edges would help pull the forms out more.
BTW: How did you render that?
Firebert
02-25-2010, 10:46 AM
Thanks Brad! I adjusted the shader and put in the revised skin shader that I forgot to import.
I edited the post with the render I just pulled.... let me know your thoughts....
I'm using MR for the render, and I've been fighting the damn MIA materials like a nobody's business... it's quite a different scenario from dialing in your spec and gloss maps... sometimes the shaders would literally bake the textures to the point of no matter what changes you made to the shader or the textures, it would remain unchanged in the renders. super annoying and a lot of drinking. but the timeline on the challenge was long, not a lot of pressure to finish, and i wanted to try some different shading stuff for a change. i won't be going back to using them for a while though. not fun.
an the armor from the ref i found isn't very specular tbh... pretty flat diffused metal. couldn't really match it though... failed that one imo.

duck: really nice work
undoz: seeing your textures on zbrushcentral, you could try to overlay a simple 4x4 checker with 3-5% on the cloth parts, it really works wonders some times
ok worked a bit further on garrido

You mean on the normal map? I think I wanted to try that but I forgot.
The model is coming along nicely
also spec and dif, you could test around where you need what intensity, but normally i end up using 3 or 5% depending on your texturesize a 2x2 checker will do, but when i do anything over 1k a 4x4 works better and holds up a bit better with mipmapping, but its really just a very subtle effect

Tried to be more "academic" in this second study of the Sargent's Girl. Better likeness this time, but not perfect - I've noticed that is hard to make a exact copy when the reference image is so close "same monitor, etc."

Thanks :) It's not 100% done yet though (still tweaking textures). The engine it's for is from 2004, so it handles things really wonky and I have to blow out shit for it to show up properly. Right now it's using diff/spec/lum/bump (doesn't support norms).

Hey guys! My first official post here, hehe.. Great work everyone! I'm glad I've joined, and maybe I can contribute with something nice too :)
Vassago: I like the magnitude in the model, really feels huge! But the stretching in the middle section on the vents(?) takes some of that greatness away.. Or maybe its just not the vents best angle.. However, great work!
redmond_david: Nice potential! Keep it up :)
dn-revenge: Just keep modeling like crazy! And do study other people's work a lot! You'll soon notice how fast you're evolving :)
turpedo: I love that pillar! You've really nailed the cartoony diffuse.. But a couple of details could've been taken care of by a normal map..? But maybe you're not using any on your project, what do I know.. Great work
Time for one of my works I guess..
This is a zombie kid inspired from a concept by Björn Hurri.. It was for a school assignment so it was made in maybe 9-10 hours including the sculpting, retopologizing, texturing and so on.. Some things aren't too well done.. But I guess it's okay for the time limit.. Alpha was not allowed so i had to leave out the drool and fabric rips.. :P Hope you like it anyway!

Looking back at the simplicity of Masamune Shirows designs ... and becoming quite a fan of the rather dry 90s CG look of his renders! Hence im kinda testing it all out on a speedmodel now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/pior_speedrobot_001.jpg
Not much to see, but potentially a base for later paintovers ...
hmhmmmmmm so nice and clean and yummy, very sweet blockout
ok i call the sculptingphase as pretty much over, here and there some small things to fix and clean up but basicly i think its done
http://media.moddb.com/images/mods/1/11/10979/garrido_07.1.jpg
Looking real good neox!
Got a few minor crits though, the hands looks very flat, they could do with some beefing up on the back of the hand. Also, the top of the gaiters look a bit too open, not like they are tied tightly around the bottoms of the trousers.
Oh, and awesome render pior!
the hands will be taken from the ingame version of the grandpa, so they are a bit more beefed up already, i just plugged something in to have something there :)
as for the gaiters, i'm not sure i kinda liked the flow they have, it was more straight first and i changed it while sculpting, but maybe you are right, should test that out

Thats great Pior, did you do a quick paintover the model, cause depending on where you look, sometimes it has that "3d" feel, and sometimes it looks like a concept, either way, mad respect mr pior.

Was sketching a W.Dafoe photo and a this subtle question came to my mind: Why this man never act as a Joke?! He have the look and feel of the original character.
After that, a quickly search told me about Burton's consideration to use his work in the first (and cooler) Batman film.

Another solution for the gaiters, would be to give the trousers a bit more weight and baggyness just where they go into the gaiters.
But I'm nitpicking, hehe

That gun looks really awsome. The only thing that I see in the design is the ejection port is way too small for a shell of that caliber.

build.: nice subtle forms, i do think that there should be some more curve in his back and maybe some more volume on the back of his deltoids.
The forearms look a tad to small but it could be that it's intended to look that way.
anyway nice work so far :)
took a break from painting, finally getting back into it... got some weekend acrylic doodle time in. Skull is done (and really small), colorful face one is still wippy

super you still seem to be using the same basemesh as you use to all your faces , making them all look the same, also you tend to always give them the same bone structure, eye structure , lips :(
Pior, that looks fucking kickass but could you show a screencap from max with some spec in the mat :P more interested in the shapes you got going there :P

Robot, looks pretty good. The tip of the barrel bothers me though, I didn't notice it on your high poly until I saw the marmo shot. It looks like the parts near the square holes are accidentily flat. From the marmo shot, I first thought it was an edge normal problem

neox. It's based on this concept. I don't want to stray to much from it but I kiiind of agree. Honor the creator etc. Skulls + gun were the theme of the competition it came from.
I could remove it though I guess. I don't know. Hmm.

There's always cool stuff here. Hopefully, I can contribute a little with this one.
This was something I did trying to learn how to use Zbrush. I just went back and tried to clean it up and make it a little better. This is just the decimated version rendered out of Max. I plan on continuing this and finishing out the rest of the building entrance this was a part of (already started, but not worth showing the rest yet).
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j166/dtschultz_photos/scrolled_deco_030110.jpg
@Notorious P.I.G: I think something like this would be cool:
http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/images/uploads/ppsh41/PPSH41_8.jpg
Also, perhaps make the ejection port a bit deeper, so it reads a bit better. Another thought is that the sling buckle perhaps looks too small. Sizing it up would also add to the general bulkiness of the gun, methinks.
Otherwise, top-notch work mate!

Well you could go for a skull that just looks a little different/ ie has the bottom jaw present. Although I also like the sound of that bolt and bar option...

P.I.G. I'm loving that gun, although with the overall utilitarian style of it I don't think the skull is really bringing anything to the party. If you a totally stuck on the idea of putting a skull down there, maybe try stylizing into more simple, geometric shapes. Perhaps even a skull shaped out of actual functional bits.
JFletcher: Gotta love the toxic post-apoc redneck.
Something I painted up today.

Frogfish, nice work so far. And I'm not just saying that because it's a gal in a skirt. I really like the hand position right now. It's really intense. As for the boots, I'd say play with some styles.
Just some suggestions
