that's pretty good Talon! :) Keep up man.

I got started using ZB (for real now) a few days / weeks ago, takes a while to get used to it man, more than I thought. But after that, it's a very good app with some very good plugins as well.

Looks pretty good, although the outside eroding away to reveal bricks underneath is kinda unconvincing, it's a bit too uniform and geometric, and perfectly centered on the wall. Also, your main texture is too shiny. What's the wood board under the window for?

I'm going to get the spec from the diffuse I get everything in ue3 so I didn't do that yet. The board under the window, I have no idea, just threw it there to break up the wall haha.

I was wondering about the erosion, I wasn't 100%, ill resculpt and bake ;)

@e-freak - The head and shoes are yet to receive a spec map. Right now it's just using source's default spec solution. Everything is still very much wip. ;)

@Shiv - I still am going to add hair planes on the head to produce a restless feel for the hair. From what I can see in the movie. His hair comes off it's comb balance and dangles a bit off-side. I'll post a new one when it's finished :)

MattQ86, I like the style of it, but I can see a lot of little improvements you can work on the texture. Since it's late for this, my 2 cents is to put more work in the lightning of the beauty shot. They're too strong in some parts (spec map?), like the feet...and there's no shadows to model the forms.
And get rid of that Normal Map, I can't see where's needed (used) in that specific model.

Anyway. Good work.

ps..: you have an insane sprite as avatar. What is this? Mutant League Football ?

MattQ86
02-20-2010, 05:42 PM
Thanks Dado, the deadline's not until Monday at like 11PM, so if you want to point out any little problem areas with the texture feel free. I've been looking for something to do with the rest of the day and I suppose finding a good lighting solution in Maya other than "saturation bomb with volume lights" is a good way to go. And yes, my avatar is a character portrait from Mutant League color corrected to match Polycount's scheme.

Ironic that I'm getting more constructive feedback here than GA...just saying.

So Matt, here's something I can suggest you about that specific work. But please dude, in any way I'm trying to say that "my version" is better than yours. Ok? I did that overpaint just to show what points I miss in your model.

Read, See, Analyze and rework the advices in your own style/art direction. K?

http://amonsteria.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/mattscarecrow_overpaint.jpg

(1). If you have to stick with the Normal Map, try to make it more visible. I would use more bold winkles where his hat bend and in his cape.

(2). It's a shame, but I never read The Wizard of Oz. Anyway, a quick search in Wikipedia tells me that the Scarecrow "talks" (that's why I suggest some mouth) and he wishes to have a brain (that's why I would change the black-dot-eyes for something to make it more ... dumb, idiot, not so smart. Eyes are too much important to give appeal to characters.

(3). You're using a 1024 texture, but the result are blurry. If you're using photo-reference (which is Ok), try to sharpen the details (not just using the Unsharp Mask filter), but overpainting. In his shirt I suggest to enhance more the difference values of each stripe, to enrich the texture. Got it?

(4). Here's a area that you really have to think about it. Your "props" are too subtle (imho), and since it can help to tells something of the character story, make it pop. The stripes around his arms, the belt, the patches could be bigger and more colorful (in this case, I use small portions of blue to contrast the variety of orange, yellows and brows you're using).

(5). That curvy effect in the straws isn't hard to make and increase the value of the silhouette. I recall that effect when playing in my grandpa farm.

(6). The texture of the hands and feets are the most critical thing. Like I've said in 3, photo needs to be overworked. I paste an example of a straw reference. Maybe you can achieve a better texture using a Flat brush, painting stripes in top of each other, varying the hues of yellow, hot-greys and brows.

(7). Like in his sleeves, you can increase the silhouette of the pants spreading the polygons a little more. As the Normal Map, the usage of the Alpha can be more visible.

That's it. Hope you absorb something of my points. They aren't hard to work and can make the character more interesting to play with.

Ok?

Alrighty so I tried putting this scene in udk... found out about 3/4 of the way that it doesn't have the particle effects i needed (really don't want to spend time to make new ones) so I did some post work in photoshop just to make it look "cool" and what not.

UDK is fun, just not friendly at all to UT3 content, lesson learned :P

When you have such a shader, how much shadow detail should you put in the texture?

I'd just add details where there isn't enough model detail to put the shader to work. Other lighting information could still be there, just make it very subtle.

Aaagreen

Well if you look at Wind Waker, the textures have no lighting details at all, the nice shader does it all.

Naruto clash of ninja uses a toon type shader as well, im almost positive there is no shadow detail in the texture.

Great modo render adamlewis.

Niwon: Great renders. I really like the daytime one.

Firebert: Nice start on the face. The finished piece should turn out very nice.

Experimenting more with rendering in modo. Character design inspired by Damien Canderle.

One more for the GA mini-comp. Thanks to Dado for the paintover. I tried to get as many of the changes in during the few short hours I had as possible, but this is where I had to stop as I really couldn't re-uv and re-rig the mesh, not to mention any further changes would have to be done in 2 polys.

Hey guys,

Been trying to sigh up here since yesterday. I'm really amazed at all the great work everyone is doing. This is my second try getting into 3D model/game art (I used "Anim8or" a few years before but now I have access to 3DSMax).

here some crappy stuff i did a week or two ago...
the only reference image i had at the time were in game "Torchlight" models. (i dont have internet at home for a while) I feel kinda foolish cause i didnt know that these guns don't really have wide open mouth ends like that >_>...that its mostly a cartoon thing...

I hope the image resizing is auto cause i dont know how :/
