first integration test for the sits, ill probably need some kind of fixations to make a better transition with the tiles, add some missing rivets and tweak that strong spec a bit.

Orb... so digging the colours man, beautiful work so far :)
Brad - Haha... nah man, I haven't even textured it, imma bring some love to it :)
Kevin - Thank you so much for the crit, huge fan of your work. I was wondering if you knew a "quick" and non destructive way of adding more sides to the base? I know exactly what you mean, and I have such a BAD tendency to go lower poly... which is weird because I try to make sure my silhouettes read nicely.

AimBiZ: Awesome.
The only thing I have to say is that you've got some wasted texture space. You probably could have disconnected the dotted neck part and moved it to the right allowing you to align the head UV's with the body. That nice patch of empty space would let you scale the entire texture to the left until it filled up the whole space giving you moar pixels! Still, great job.

Thanks and the reason behind the wasted space is since I romeved the huge old wings it had and made new ones, which didn't need as much uv-space so I put them and the weapons on a new map and cropped the old one, and by that time The bodytexture was almost finished.
So basically a designflaw from my part. Will plan better next time. :)

Looking good so far, only thing I would say is the oars kind of seem to be sticking out of his head... or are just too distracting not sure. Maybe making the dino more saturated would help?

Doing the texture for this right now. I'm really hoping its current ugliness is just from the texture being in its ugly phase rather than the model itself being fundamentally screwed up. I'll see how it goes.
Farfarer
01-29-2010, 05:08 AM
I think the ugliness is due to the model, sadly. She's got a very strongly masculine jawline and a severe looking face. The head proportions look odd, too (thinner at the top than the bottom, too narrow at the back and ears that stick out no wider than her cheekbones/jaw).

Awesome Szark. Blurry texture in the foreground is a bit distracting though, maybe add some props or dof?
Sogun, head looks pretty cool, but it's a bit blobby. Maybe add some sharp areas where bone sits close to skin and define skull planes more.

Yeah I'm going to play with the material set up, right now it doesn't have anything going on except a diffuse map, but I don't want it to be overly smooth an glossy looking It still has to look rusty, So I'll keep it as minimal as possible.
Just cause I was the last post on the last page.

Thx again! :)
@rooster: I did that in order to minimize distortion on the quite big nose especially. And probably because I'm used to it. (Mostly with mirrored textures, though.) I use cameramaps and rebaking a lot. (Used that to project the picture, too.) Takes a bit of time to set up but reduces guesswork and lets me paint over seams easily. Sometimes in the past I used to do two uv-sets even. A quick one, that is optimized for painting, without caring for uv-space/packing and a second one that is optimized for uv-space/engine. Can be a bad idea though, if someone else wants to do texture variations.
@ doc rob:
Really amazing! I, too, admire your use of brushstrokes and the sense of depth in your picture.

Hey Guys!
Long time no see, I have been working on this one today.
So this is todays creme de la crop.
Still working on the textures though, and I think I need to tone down all the damage on it a bit.
Have a go at it, and we'll see if I find time to adjust anything u might wanna change.
It's currently 1024 maps,
And I think the Grenade is around 1300tris, I was thinking about having it for First person view. It feels a bit too much, but it all depends I guess. Have optimized pretty much already. Next step in would be to remove the siluette of those bulky things on the body. And I would want to keep those soo.
And I also kinda don't like that the normals doesn't smoot the edges on those same bulky things as much as in my highpoly.
Thanks in advance!

Yeah I would like to go back and rework the UVS, I did them at 6 AM during an all nighter (Bad idea).
And about the detached look, I know what you guys are talking about, IT does have a rimlight on, and a very very low Phong, too much and it ends up looking way too shiney, I'll show you guys an example.
And thanks Zac, I'm going to lower the saturation a bit, not as extremely as you did, but i'm definitely going to rework the textures.

Decided to have ago at the cghub bust competition. Mainly working on realism pieces for my portfolio at the moment, so thought this would be a nice break.
Here's blockout stage 1 and 2, decided to go with Bernard from Day of the Tentacle after some quick low poly blockouts. I actually made Bernard a long time ago in real low poly but lost the model. :(
For the final render later on think i'm going to pose him with a scared expression and in his glasses reflection put a tentacle with a gun :)
Anyway, early days most of it's still blockout. Currently working on the eye area.

Drav, that looks great. You should use a sculpting app like mudbox or Zbrush to beat it up. Also, I would do that before you build a low poly so you know where to model major dents and damage.

You could isolate the part you want to beatup, then apply a fairly rigid cloth type simulation and push collider meshes into it then freeze the cloth engine for your result
or grab a free trial of mudbox

Jesus Christ Hawken, talk about overcomplicating matters!
Just add a few turbosmooths, add an edit poly on top and use soft selection.
Tadaa! Dents.

400 pages of basic knowledge, should prove useful. Found it randomly in the uni libary, lol - i was looking for Bukowski and got lost in the art department. Going to be educational two weeks.

My first take, plan to put the final in game resolution models in a scene built earlier and add game play to it.

I simply duplicated the grip polys, subd'd it until it was dense, and applied a noise mod.
I've added in the hammer, trigger, and text.

It looks nice racer but you could get the same effect by using a noise map in the bump channel with out the extra geometry.

think your facial proportions are a little off there samgriffiths. The forhead to top of skull is massive, eyes feel really close together, the shape of the face just feels off.
cool gun strap though!

samgriffiths, you need to look at wrinkles on shirts a little better, especially on the armpits. some of the folds dont make sense...theyre going the wrong direction and seems over done. and ditto with moose as well on proportions

his lips look a bit scrunched up like he's sucking on something or about to make a kissy face scudz.
I'm not really feeling the position/shape of his side cloth thing either... The fabric shape suggests that the fabric wasn't made as a square...
build.

@racer445: your stuff is fantastic, this piece is no different.
@skudz: i like the over all design but aesir is right on the money, i think even a simple change like this would help?

I've been doodling this thing out though its not finished yet.
I think its been done a number of times, anyone know the original artist so I can give credit where its due?

Character I'm working on for my Senior Film next year. Base mesh created using Nurbs+Lattice deformers, converted to polygons and sculpting it in Maya low poly then applying a smooth. Never used Nurbs before, ever, and I like how it works paired with a lattice
Tail ridges are being redone, and haven't touched the legs or toes either (as you can tell, :P)

Amazing work across the board.
Loved your entry to the competition, beartraps, good luck!
Feel a little ashamed to post my stuff here because the other 2D art I've seen in this thread is completely badass. I was involved in the same competition that beartraps was, albeit in the concept section and not the character modeling section.
Disregard the image headers, I'm just linking the images straight from my website.
There is long thread at http://www.tinyurl.com/shermanEvolve that shows all of my work in progress ever since the start of the comeptition back in October (4 months!)
Here were the images I submitted for my entry:
