ANP you should try to maintain a more consistent edge density across your control mesh. There are lots of very low density areas where you are asking the subdivision to create major forms, you don't have much control when you work that way. Instead try and use a lot more edges and be more intentional with their placement. The control mesh should look almost like the smoothed result.

Making a mini bust version of a similar dude ...
The wrinkles repartition is way too uneven ... but it really is just a test, to see if the type of clay/plasticine I used behaves well for mold making.
Cool! Is that sculpy you're using though?

This is awesome! I was just talking about SSX yesterday and how good it would be if they made a current-gen version!
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned/addressed before but I think the boots need to be beefed up a lot, for two reasons;
Firstly, snowboard boots are huge. Really huge. I don't know if you're a snowboarder but when I've got my boots they literally look massive, like gears of war/ut3 boots massive.
Secondly, it looks kinda odd how the pants are creasing out at the bottom over those skinny little boots. If you sized up the boots some, it seems like it would look fine.
Also I think it would just help with the silhouette, when you see an image of a snowboarder, 2D or 3D, realistic or stylized, they usually emphasise that 'flare out' from the upper leg down to the big width of the boots, whereas right now your Psymon's legs look nice and solid long the leg and then taper off into these little shoes.
Great work though and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this progress!

cheers man :) I was thinking it looked weird but Ive sized up the boots like you said and it looks miles better now, will play with the flare of the trousers when texturings further on :)

Justin - That fire looks pretty sweet. Are you going to fix the popping, or was that intentional?
@RAWTalent, the biggest issue right now is, that there is no structure at all in it, it doesn't follow the mesh at all, its just some random hair texture placed on some pretty random hair mesh
just a quick mentral ray rendering of a character i'm doing for a shortmovie of some friends

Polymer clays are great, especially for people starting to sculpt because they are virtually mess free. Plus you have the option to bake and keep whatever you've made versus making a mold for it and casting it in a resin or what not. I would say the only downside to them is that the clay does go bad, and you sometimes have to knead it for like 15 minutes to work with it well. But also check out Plasticine clay and WED Clay. They're both super easy to work with, especially WED clay. Plus they cost less for the amount of clay you get.
As far tools go, don't underestimate the power of your two hands. Check out this Jordu Schell video, dude uses his hands for 90% of the video. Granted, he's a professional, but it's a good habit to get into.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI094xaa98o
But you can pick up a basic tool kit at most craft stores that has an assortment of loops and scrapers. But I would also feel out other things that look like they would be useful, one of my favorite detailing tools is an old manicuring tool. Sharpened paint brush ends also work well.

not my decision, the eyes might be tracked onto him in 2d later anyways, so it doesn't matter too much, but yeah they are intentionally small, beady eyes (? right word?) as for puppets or teddybears is the target, but it looked totally stupid without any anatomical lid around it - but we will see how it turns out, so far its planned to paint them entirely in 2d :)

I wrote taht in 2009 on my sketchbook on the 3dcoat boards "Voxel is very nice for prototyping, but i have such an hard time to get strong sculpting :/
I need to pass the feeling of "its too soft to work with"."

dummy texture but real normal map, I made it through some weird 3dsmaxphotoshop hacking to bake an object onto itself, I really need to learn more about this.. to just render an object's own normal map to edit on. But it worked.
I am glad all this game modding is forcing me to learn textures, instead of all the bare models I've made previously.

Very nice design, throws work in my face.
Lacks contact details on front page.
Next Image arrows are too small. Kept clicking close.
Contact page is empty as shit, put it all on front page.
Finally, images lack your name and contact. They sometimes save images they like for future reference but if your work doesn't have a name on it or a website, how will they find you again?

Nonetheless, nice model.
Kevin Johnstone
11-27-2010, 07:28 PM
dustin: The snakes on his back, you lost the eye intensity, need to be larger and more aggressive, also, you thicken the body in an irregular fashion as it gets closer to the shoulders which makes it look wrong. You ought to find some way to work those into a backpack bracing sort of construction that ties in with the elaborate head dress shoulder mount stuff, would be useful to look up some old aztec and mayan art and use more of that for inspiration.

You should try and get some more dramatic lighting situations and paint those. It will help you understand lighting better inside a familiar space. for example, place a light in front of your bed, so it will cast long dramatic shadows across your wall. might be interesting :)

Based on the sword from this Torchlight 2 concept (http://cghub.com/images/view/75665/). I'd like to do the entire character, but I wanted to make sure I could get the materials looking right before I started on any of the rest. I still have a ways to go before I'll be happy, but I think I know what I'm doing, so I'll be starting on the actual character soon enough.

I think the drum sticks are a little too short.
It is. Typical drumstick is ~16 inches, and a mic by comparison is 7-10 inches, but there's a few reasons for the size being what it is. The design is going to sit on a skateboard, where the skateboard will literally fit inside the shirt(portions of the left and right sides will be cut off in the process...to a point about flush with the left edge of the pocket and a little right of the bottom of the mic on the right). I chose to shorten them up so they would completely fit on the design.
The band it's for, Neon Trees(I'm sure at least some of you have heard of them, they have a pretty popular song that plays in a lot of recent commercials lately stateside), has a heavy 80's theme to them, and asked for a design to show kinda what they are about. In the video for their song "1983" they have Corey Feldman in there dressed up as his Lost Boys character, Edgar Frog. That's what the design is of. In place of the face will be the band name, and on the bottom will be the CD title("Habits"). Can't see it in this small screenshot, but on the pick on the necklace, it actually says "Habits" as well.
This is the song most have heard of theirs, if they don't recognize the name:
Animals by Neon Trees
TL;DR.
Thanks for the kind words Ruz.

That looks sick Jesse, what's the tri count on it?
Sitting at 3404 for the whole gun. The extra bullet cylinder is sitting at 624.

Did this comic strip test for a friend's Blog. The idea is to use some common issues of the CG profession as a plot for the comics.

Just let me know if this makes sense to you guys, so I'll keep posting these strips here aswell. K?
i think it would make more sense if it said like "Error: Memory full" and the little progress bar underneath saying 97% or something..
That's why you don't work with shit that needs to be rendered out as a film or picture! Realtime FTW!! :poly142:

HAHAHAH - man, if I had a nickle for every time Ive come in the next morning and all that was on the screen was a "Overwrite existing file?" dialog.... ..Id have like .25 cents or something
Great comic tho, def keep posting!

@sltrOlsson, @Mechadus: Hey. Glad you dig it guys. Definitively It's a good choice to put another kind of feedback error instead of just the black screen. It will have a little more "sense" for anyone. Excellent comment.
Another bad one is when you forget to select the proper camera in the render view. Oh man, that's hurt!
Thanks guys.

I'm a little new to modeler, so what do you think of it? What could be improved other than the low resolution texture since I know about that already? Could I have done something differently? Nope. There are a few issues doing that, mainly the position as to which it'll be situated on the board(having to navigate some of the more important artistic features around the trucks so they don't get hidden/cut off when trucks are placed on). The other real issue is there is going to be text situated down in that blank area on the bottom.
All in all though, the illustration is not oriented around accuracy of size or anything. Normal an issue like that would bug the shit out of me, but for this I kinda like the way they are. Sometimes taking artistic freedoms is needed.

True. Besides, a guy with blue text for a face isn't exactly anatomically correct either. Wouldn't it be easier to have an overlay with the limits of the 'canvas' though? Like where the borders are and the position of the trucks.

I do have one. I know exactly where things get cut off, I just don't bother with that mock-up until I'm done. If I don't design outside the bleed, I'll end up trying to crunch everything down so it'll fit. On the mock-up(which I will eventually have the design on...it's a full scale deck with 1:1 dimensions, whenever I go back into Photoshop since I'm doing all the linework in Manga Studio at the moment), there's a full bleed, true bleed and a "safe zone" to keep all text inside so it doesn't roll over the edges of the actual deck.
Kinda hard to explain, but along with the design brief I got from the merch company, they included the deck size mock-up in PSD format, so I have actual dimension. When I finish it'll make more sense.

Thats some quite strong fringing around your image xvampire, is that meant for 3D glasses?

Hi zenarion,
It looks quite slow-motiony so you might want to think about speeding the whole thing up quite a lot for starters. After that I'd look into adding weight to make it look a bit less "sound of music" and a bit more intentional and probably a bit more agressive (totally depends on the style of the game you're making but that's what it feels like it needs to me).
In terms of adding weight I'd probably work on the root's Y-axis motion to make him fall more quickly on the down motion and have the up motion more gradual and accelerating towards the apex. I also think you could be doing more with the spine in terms of its (world) Z-axis rotation (you can use the root's X translation to counter this). Try and get a sense of his weight being transferred from foot to foot as he goes.
You could also probably do with having the foot bend a bit more at the toe so the foot lifts up and he pushes off with his foot bent and the toe still flat on the ground (this will probably help stop the legs locking out so much too).
It might also be useful to put a ground plane in with a texture on it that moves backward at a constant speed as reference so you can make sure the feet stay planted when they are on the ground.
