Here is an update of two of the characters I'm working on;
http://www.goraaz.se/supershredder101111.jpg
The face is very loosely based on Francois Chau's face who played the shredder in the secret of the ooze. I'm going for a more stylized version...
Here is another one I'm working on;

Hi Rich,
awesome work as usual, your cloth skills have leveled up considerably!
My own 2 cents is that the hair style is a little plain - doesnt do her, and her lovely legs, justice!

im not hugely familiar with lewis but the first thing that jumps out at me is the drum looks too short in the vertical axis. then again, I'm used to the aerial versions, maybe they had a drum of higher capacity

New to max, 3d, everything as of a few months ago :)
I knew that something wasn't working right but couldn't figure out what, and you nailed it: shiny and rusty generally don't go together! I think I was trying to do everything at once with my first texture.
I still want to keep it weathered looking as my character is going to have a jetpack and be flying around, so he'll get lots of nicks and scratches on his armor. Still figuring out how bump/normal and spec maps work off one another, don't think I have it yet, but then again it's probably because my knowledge of lighting is noob. I think Vray is too good for me, too :poly124:.
Though I was trying not to get rust so much as worn paint. But anyway, I think what he needs next is more variety.
I wasn't going to bake normal maps originally as this character will be used for animation and not for a game. But now, since he is a simple model, I'm considering baking normals to get more detail on the mesh and not have to re unwrap a high poly (Max, unwraps, and subdivision generally don't get along).
But what does everyone else think?

I don't think she looks dudish at all! Nothing on her screams "man!". I see a young woman w/ a modern styled haircut, maybe 130lbs. The neck is graceful, small shoulders, pretty lips, very young average female. Sure she doesn't look like the typical sultry supermodel watermelon-boobs and 12-inch waist exaggeration that is everywhere, she looks feminine and young.
If I were to only look at her head, I could see a bit of boyishness, but women and young boys have very similar facial structures. With a body sculpted she would obviously be a very beautiful young woman. I think your female form is quite nice and subtle so far.
If you wanted to push away from realism, you could make her cheekbones more prominent, her nose smaller/pointier, or her eyes bigger or something, but I think your form is quite lovely.

http://i56.tinypic.com/aaw5fn.jpg
From the texture standpoint I find it extremely nice to and easy to look at. The walkway itself looks really repetitive and tiled in some areas while in others it doesn't. I also don't like that pattern you created, where some stone pieces look up in the air, others sink more into the ground. I critted this on someone elses work where it was much more obvious, but it just seems to be a common way of adding detail to the ground. Rotate and move some bricks and it'll be cool - Peris tutorial for the win ;)
I mean, from what I get when looking at such similar ancient bricks walkways reference pictures on google is, that sure some of these have uneven stones and stuff but the overall effect is very natural, organic and flowing, e.g. bent or curved as a whole entity by a heavy vehicle driving over it.
But with your distribution I would think something like this:
"Now these smart people had the ability of crafting these super even stones/bricks and aligned them perfectly on the horizontal axis, yet it looks like some idiot took a hammer and punched on the stones here, then turned around 180 degrees and punched there"
You can argue, boy what a load of text for nothing but some walkway, and I'm sure you'd win in court :D
But I remember when someone smart wrote something about the environment telling a story and I always seem to get stuck on this part when looking at people's environments. I think there would be a much more delicate way of arranging the stonework to make it look believably used.
In reality you can just ignore my happystory and move on :D

Really? It looks like an average nose to me, on the realistic side.
To push game-style feminine, it could be smaller/pointier. but I think that, textured and with a realistic-proportioned body, she would not looked boyish at all! :D

Your slide needs to be wider. Also, the edges of the back should be much softer and there should be a curve across the width of it. Actually, the whole width of the gun feels a little off.

Pior - Thats so cool, traditional media always impresses me:) Is this your first clay sculpt? It's really nice
ScoobyDoofus - Nice, reminds me of Christian Bale in the Machinist
Face opens up to interface with a weapon Im currently designing. The gun will plug into a port in the left eye, transmitting data from it's own set of sensors. Stuff. Still have tons to do, like giving the poor thing some hair:)

Crazy Matt, I'm amazed NMRIH is still going as it is, I suppose Maxx refuses to let it fade, haha.
I'm glad there is other sculpture in this thread, so this doesn't seem so out of place.
I spent the last month or so working on and off on this bust for the Sculptor Carole Feuerman, whom I'm looking to get a full time job as a fabrication assistant with. The sculpt is one of Carole's life casts from her studio that I chased and then molded it so I could cast it in silicone. I also punched the hair, including the rough shave.

Anyone got some advice?
I dont feel like its sufficient for an own thread, so i hope to get some strong crits here...
The effect i tried to achieve was the fading in, the end result needs the footage to be more or less opaque at some time, so its kinda boring from sec 3 on, but thats on purpose.

Ruz & Dkk: Thanks guys!
Endomi: I wasn't thinking of Bale when I did this, but I can see what you mean. Bale was much more gaunt and pale I think. I really like your gun-faced-girl. Great style and execution. Lets see the hair!
Pior: Looks fun! Cant wait to see him all spiney.
I've got a big box of super sculpy just sitting here...
Ralusek: Sorry but he looks like a lumpy pink turd monster, and not in a good way. Maybe step back a few subdivisions and get your forms and design reading better at a lower rez before progressing to the higher freq details.
Work big to small.
Neo_God: Neato! Looks pretty realistic, although those lips look too dark/pink and are reading as lipstick/effeminate.
Highelf: Nice likeness! Instantly recognizable, tho I think you could present it better. Just a front ortho view doesnt do your sculpt justice. Please, give us some more angles.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/44379/newguy_wip_002.jpg
I put in a little more time on this guy today.
(Translation: I started cheating and using photos for texture overlays again)
I still don't know what I'm doing with him, if anything, so the neck/clavicle area will remain fairly undefined I think.

great stuff in here lately!
pior - you always pull the most awesome shapes. really nice
scooby - this is sweet. reminds me a bit of Kevin J O'Connor's character from There will be blood.
endomi - i really like that face idea. it might be cool if the gun's sights fit into that hole left behind by the moving face plate, as opposed to just plugging into the eye. kinda like ultra binoculars that shoot lasers, although recoil would be a pain in the neck if you're planning a ballistic wep :P

You were absolutely right, in fact the first thing she told me was the the lips needed to be more pale, like a man's, haha. I would post updated photos of it, but as of last night I'm now under an NDA, so it'll have to wait until the day she exhibits it.
I think it's releasing this year :)
I'm excited to see it released, I have some work in it that I did like 4 years ago.
Spitty, that really is an awesome rendition of The Killer Croc, totally puts the arkham asylum one to shame so far.
JordanW, I agree that it totally looks miniature (It's the DOF you have on it right now, it looks like a Macro shot from a camera) But it gives it a really nice charm, sorta like a stop-motion set piece or something.

Guys looking bad ass!
I'd say go with the wraps, or some variant of them. Maybe a tattered reminiscent of a old torn up trench coat like he is always wearing in the cartoon before he'd rip it off and attack the bats. Think it might break up some of the scale work. I always like the way draping stuff looks though.
Maybe play with croc nostrils like you did with the ears, might make the face a tad more menacing.
Keep us posted.
schebbe - his ear lobe is tiny/too far down. looks nice overall though

Thanks for the critique! I do have a bit of polishing to do for sure - I'm going to have mounded-up dirt in the terrain from where the plane hits the ground, some broken trees behind it, and some more little plane debris around the area. I will definitely try to make the scene look less clean, thanks.

How does it not mesh? Is it the color, or the feel of it? I'm lighting my scene now, and it is a much deeper blue (like an early-morning or late evening, sunless blue). I'll keep an eye on that to see if it meshes with my scene, thanks!
I have not played TR2, maybe I'll have to now to see that level :D

that is one sexy, sexy woman areve! I've never seen boobs modeled in that fashion before, but it seems like it worked for you. Those bicepts irk me with that long space of no edge flow....1 more edge loop would make me feel a lot better, but I don't suppose that's a huge issue. I have no critique :P, she looks great!
*edit*
oh, I also kinda feel like you should have 2 edge loops on the forearm and get rid of that one in the middle...just once again feels like too little geometry for deforming

Thanks. I used some leaf brushes to get the base leafy look down first then painted over them adding lighting and other details til they looked more believable.
@Fireflights - Nice paintover, I like the little smirk you gave her too. Not sure if your name is related to the band Fireflight or not, but they're awesome.
AlecMoody looking hot, now texture that thing!
Free_Fall banding across the prayer stand looks bad because this texture is hiding structure, not complimenting it. Suggest starting with a simpler base texture and building around the shapes of the model. eg: dirt in recesses, highlights on the proud parts, corners etc.
ps: left curtain looks good, right is too uniform.
