Been working on a game engine for my school practicum (final project). Just getting phsyx integration completed. Still have lots of work to do: Shadows, Audio, Particles, GUI, among other things.

Decided to play around with metal objects and a greentooth helmet mesh that was passed along to me.

thanks guys! and ya PolyHertz i really dont care about most stuff like that as most of it is unfinished anyways! heh the waterfall things where just temporary additions and the blue light imo fights too much with the other bright ass light from outside.. and well i could go on :P! but ya nice spotting that i didnt even realise.

i may do a vid at some point but really i am just using a method that i learned from whit bracna's massive black dvds so if you really want to see someone who is actually good at concepting :P www.brushbook.com check out his tutorial section! but ya if i were to make a video it would just be a shit version of his! so there aint that much point ;x

working on improving my (so far non-existent) modeling skills in MAX

http://www.psytraxx.de/gameartist/docks/day5_refined2.jpg

around 9000 tris right now, i guess will be ok for such a big thing right?

really not sure how to texture it cleverly tho, UDK limits to 2048² maps for vehicles, i could use tiling and/or maybe even 2 of those but i´d rather just use a single 8192² lol and make everything have unique uv´s for crazy nextgen and easy baking/normalmapping and re-using the same channel for the lightmaps but i guess thats just a dream..

any best practice tips for such big assets? :/

Haven’t really been working on this the last few days, doing some drawing stuff with pencil/micron pens/paper. I’m pretty much making it a poster(I don’t think it’d look good on a shirt, but I could mock it up I guess).

I am having some issues deciding what to do to it to make it less bland. The scroll is an idea I like, but it feels empty without text and I really have nothing to put in it .. I’m going to dirty the edges up on green background, but still feel the background needs love.

Hey - Medestruit you know i'm a fan ;) but are you doing this in vector or photoshop - what resolution you using for it?

It's all Photoshop. The octopus itself is in a file that's 5000x5000(16 2/3"x16 2/3") at 300 DPI. The canvas it's on at the moment in that screenshot is 17x11 so I actually have a good bit of resolution. I'm good up to ~24"x24" with this setup.

Medestruit: I really like it, but I don't know about the scroll, throws it off for me for some reason. Have you considered putting some more distance between the values to make it pop... if making it pop is what you want to do?

Here's a bad lighting job. Trying to bring this guy to a finished state, and rigging/skinning are my new vices that I have to overcome... oh and lighting as always a constant weakness.

Medestruit looking awesome as always, hope the next one you do continues with the sea theme, but has a deep sea diving suite / dry suite.

Or perhaps work that into this one, e.g. deep sea diver with hand above the octopus's head as if to grab it? Could transform the illustration to more of a portrait orientation as well, depending on the perspective you give the diver.

Just a possible direction to make it less bland.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3591373/nightcrawler/wip/wip_5polypaint.jpg

really dig the model and color scheme for the outfit, but the skin just isn't quite doing it for me. Not sure if you are still WIP on the polypaint, but you may want to try a technique like the technique shown here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k66iKwJ_iu4

start with some highly saturated colors and paint differnt parts of the skin, like recesses or areas where a alot of blood is present and then go over it with White "noodles" or some kinda of alpha with a color that will desaturate and blend the two color regions. Repeat this step several times and your skin will be alot more convincing and convey alot more visual interest as well.

*****************************

And now for my WIP

doing a UDK environment based off of Raphael's School of Athens painting for a class project that will be ongoing for the rest of the semester.

this is primarily just a whitebox mock up of the space I intend to create. also please excuse my first iteration God rays.

the meshes here are all placeholder.

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/4224/soa06.jpg

There's bloom lighting present as well, but it doesn't render with the tiledshot command apparently. The last render was intended to focus on it, instead you get to see my very few and scattered god ray meshes and the ridiculous angles at which they enter the room.

Realtime screenshots from Marmoset Toolbag. Diffuse and normal maps. No specular map yet. All colours are just flat block-ins so far, still have noooo idea where to go with her colour-wise (this is why I'm not a concept artist)...

As you can see it started out as more of an Adam Hughes version, and then it evolved a bit from there. I think I might have to give her a motorcycle..

EDIT: So far 9,500 triangles, and change. I'll model in folds to help the normal map with the silhouette once I come up with the colour scheme in case I need to do some more changes..

Thanks for the crit Bcoz. I really appreciate it. I actually own both of his books which go into more detail so I really kicked myself when I saw you posted that. I tried incorporating some of that workflow into the skin. What do you think? I painted a back scattering layer of muscle mass and then built up from there. Still though, I definitely need more practice on skin.

nice work on the nightcrawler!

started with the texturing, didn't touch her head haircut yet, just coloured it, also the hairplanes need some work in the upper half of the texturestrip, looks too massive right now

didn't touch the rest of her texture also, just some plain colour applied, same with the specular totally not tweaked yet.

@ Pzychaoz, thanks, and agreed i will add some wear tare and dirts
@ Neox, the proportions have been a bit of a fight for me, i wanted to exaggerate them some but not overly so. The chaps and belt ride high on him and ends up masking his anatomy, which i think leads to the feeling of legs feeling too short or his arms too long.

Neox, that leather has good a very nice realistic look to it. You're getting a very realistic look on her, body-wise. Not the "perfect ideal woman" proportions. That's refreshing. I wonder if you could give her a nose ring, or if that maybe ventures too far into Storm's horrid punk past..

Swizzle, I love it :) Getting a bit of Telltale Games mixed with LucasArts of yore vibe from it.

I apologise for the oversized image. I know it is overkill, but I find morbid joy in presenting my work in progress art in this way, since that never happens at work. Anyways, a bit of an update. I still need to cut in more geometry. I've saturated the colours a bit more. Playing around with colours (don't worry, not going to keep the bright orange, but it looked nice for now :P) I dislike the boots right now, the colours look off there, and I think I'm going to have to make her eyes slightly larger.

@stromberg: yeah it basicly because of 2 factors, first of all because there is only one specular and glossiness value for everything, i didn't create any maps for that just yet and secondly maybe because the scatterdepths are too deep, dunno have to find some reliable ressources about dark skin.

@east: ok you might not notice from that angle, but there are 3 piercing marks in her face, one in her right nostril, one in her lower lip and one on her ear, i decided not to give her those piercings, because of a few reasons, first of all it would suck into polycount and i don't want to waste it for such a small detail, or wouldn't look good on the texture as it wouldn't have enough volume but basicly because i don't like girls with too much metal in their faces, more or less a subjective decision :D

your catwoman is looking great, love the shape of her body, not so much a fan of the mask but thats again subjective, the execution is done very well :)

swizz: man i just love the style you developed

East, Neox: Thanks!

Trying out another, similar pose. There are some seams I need to fix and weighting issues with the rig that need tweaking, so I'll get on those soon. I need to think of some good props for this guy. Maybe a brain in a jar?

I also need to get viewport AA working. All these jaggies are really killing the mood. I suspect Max 2011 doesn't much like my video card, so I'm going to see if 2010 will play nicely. If nothing else, I'll just dump it into UDK and do a tileshot. I wish I had the cash to shell out on Marmoset right now. :(

Looking nice, Neox - is it just me or are the arms still a bit long? Could just be the pose. You probably know it, but she's very monotone from top to bottom, some tiny specks of color could really liven it up even if you're clearly going all-out realistic. Like say, a sown on patch of red somewhere, just some tiny splashes of color for contrast.

PogoP
10-07-2010, 03:03 AM
The long arms give it character!

Neox
10-07-2010, 03:07 AM
yes thats part of the concept, its a material contrast experiment, almost no colors going on besides the skin and her eyes, the clothing is black and white in different shades with varying specular colour, which will come later, but its not going to be too prominent

here is a quick paint over of the details that are missing, didn't paint in the stuff like the straps on her jacket sleeves, one side is going to be opened the other closed further, also i need some white on upperparts of the boot mainly the back, but not sure what to do.

maybe but just maybe i will ad some small colorful labels to the clothes, but i'm not sure about it, i wanted a black girl in black and white clothing, her black skin beeing the only colour going on

East
10-07-2010, 04:22 AM
Neox, I like the results you are getting with that experiment. Especially on a character like that you don't want too much visual overload. I fear that's where I'm heading with my Catwoman right now and will probably tone it down a little bit, using your character as inspiration.

I'm not too happy with the cowl on her, either. It looks too much like the one on my Batman character, and provided I have time (set my own deadlines for it) I'll revisit it :)

neox , I think the legs could do with some more form. she seems to have no knees and no

east are her lower a legs a bit too curved? Could be just the perspective, but it makes her look a bit bandy

She looks great, I really love the texture work so far. I can't wait to see how you push the skin texture as well. My only gripe so far is that she is lacking in the behind area. You can give her a bit more "junk in teh trunk" or so they say lol. Also it really has no x-men branding at all. You can maybe add some to the back of the jacket or even give her a chain with the x on it or something. Maybe that could bring in some of the color that this would need without it being contrived.

I just have one crit basically, since the whole thing is so nice this just pops out to me.
You have a lot of options for subsurface scattering on the face with marmo, I think you should go into a bit more.

Your face lights right now, a lot like a normal shader look (phongy?). If you could tweak it so it washes out more, and pulls in more flesh colors, it'd be just perfect. You should add more eye shading too if you can, just so they don't pop out quite as hard.

Okay, Last update before nappy-time. It's relatively the same as the above picture (long neck) but more circulish cause it kinda looks better compared to the original reference I'm using.

did a bit more work on my sniper rifle, went back to the first stock i had and just extended it a bit because all the other styles and stuff i tried really didn't look right

still need to lengthen the barrel and add the bipod, and also work out how the scope mounts on

i might make the mag a bit smaller in hight and longer in length so it looks more like the barrett 50 cal sniper rifle mag(http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://c2.api.ning.com/files/p0jR0dBjhBn8SPcC0-tSljCabPUtl7N3ObdyKlyqjgW*zm11LiOboRYPdBJ4MHfhSlbD jGL4x-Aa3BEaMCQ4nJuif4g6bJPk/BarrettM107.jpg&imgrefurl=http://picsdigger.com/domain/crymod.com/&h=768&w=1024&sz=97&tbnid=EFUHiufHNbLEqM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbarrett%2B50%2Bcal%2Bsniper%2Brifle&zoom=1&q=barrett+50+cal+sniper+rifle&hl=en&usg=__5o1SDxG1wLnAABvJ7azt8_LMTHw=&sa=X&ei=QeewTN2zIY75cYOvsckN&ved=0CB8Q9QEwAg)

Not yet. Still working on setting up a store front at the moment and securing some capital to invest in printing. Still working hard on that, but thanks for the comments. Certainly will let everyone here know when/if I do get prints out.

I'm really trying to collect an idea of how many possible buyers I might have so I can take the risk of throwing some extra money into this and not fear losing it to a bad investment =X

Refine your lines. Skin wrinkles and fold tend to have a very fine edges you can perceive. Really carving those little details in make a world of difference. Otherwise your face looks a little melted, wet, and clay like.

I have a little nitpick about this; pulling out anatomical details isn't necessarily the correct action. Depending on age, body fat, things of that sort, you could plausibly go with Zwebbie's head. I think the final processes would be fine details paticular to your intent. I submit this (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=190673) as an example of realistic, without exaggerated forms [more] (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=087012).

Just a note about a jacket like that, the way you have it right now would impede a persons walk it is too tight to allow a normal walk. So either you need to make it looser, or add in slits to the side of the jacket to ease the movement.

It looks very nice tiled, the repetition is almost not noticeable, very impressive work.

I'll try and post more doodles regularly...most of the time I make them and save em off and nobody sees them. For now here's a hand painted grass texture tile.

Neox / Sandro / BeatKitano - Thanks.

kaptainkernals - Yes every blade was painted unique. It took several hours over a few days. Mainly time spent destroying repetition or spots that would appear when tiling over large surface areas.

roB0T - Honestly I don't know how to answer that because I just sat down and started painting until it was done. I don't really have a work process that I follow in like steps I suppose. On tiles like that a good portion of the time is spent having it applied to geometry and looking at it from different views / rotating and trying your best to make sure it doesn't apparently repeat and have hot spots in value that show up.

Yes, very, very nice TelekineticFrog!
This has a very nice feel of depth. Just orbiting over a tiled plane, it pops out very well! Excellent pro work man.

the seams have alot of grass like laying down, like they were stepped on, and slightly lighter, on the mainly the horizontal seam.
