View Full Version : What Are You Working On? 2010 Edition!

@Angroc: Yeah. The last one is incredible like nullfed said. I think the wars could be less aggressive, and some play with the cast shadow of the Giant. Interesting scene...looks like a interesting boss to defeat.
@Swizzle: Strong portrait dude. Keep working because it's looking great.
From mine I just have a study of Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76219), made with the DeviantArt's Muro (online paint app).
Thanks for the constructive feedback! What do you mean by the wars? You mean the warriors in the foreground?
And yes, I do recognise that man. Amazing set of photographs isn't it? ; )
@Swizzle: Looking awesome! Might I suggest putting some colour in your highlights? Whites tend to look dull and cold, so adding a little cad red and yellow (or just buy a tube of cad orange which I perosnally prefer. : ) )could make it pop out. But I really really like your brush strokes. Keep on refining it!: )

@Angroc: Oh, no. I'd like to say: the 'warms'. The warm colors, looks a little over saturated.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1916709/subway_render.jpg
might want to be careful about the font you are using on the signage. If this is Tokyo then they use a sans-serif + Gothic for all the signs. The text you have there looks like ancient chinese. (Mincho style). The closest fonts I can find are Hiragino or Kozuka. If you're on a mac you're in luck as these ship with the OS. They should work on windows fine if you have a mac friend willing to send them over to you (several hundred megs). A close second would be MSGothic Bold (Japanese) + Arial Bold if you don't have any fonts installed.

More progress on this guy, unfortunately, mudbox messed up a cleaner version of the body when I was trying to sculpt the hands (it literally put vertical lines from head to toe all over the body) so I had to resort to an older save :( Guess I am going to have to model each separate part in its own mudbox file then import in together at the end

@Zweebie and @GCMP...
I don't think use a 3D proxy, in production, is cheating. Maybe in another situations art can be less "valuable" when the process isn't entire made by the artist, but, in this era, the result still more important. That's my opinion.
Zweebie. That's interesting and I'm sure you can produce more and faster using those ZB busts and posed models. The most important is to hide the proxies. I like how you're pushing the values further, putting some atmosphere. This would work.
GCMAX, I can say i'm liking those ones. For an illustration, you need to make it simple and pass the message more clearly. Maybe drawing isn't your main field (since mostly of works I've seen from you was 3D), but you need to find a better way to pass that messages.
Why don't you take advantage of your 3D knowledge to block the scenes, camera and character positions/proportions? For the next ones, try to experiment that and certainly you'll find a better and more interesting sketch to work from.
If you can share more info about those drawings, I think I can help you more (if you need it, anyway).
Last year I have a hard time trying to draw an werewolf. I remember to use Character Studio to pose, render a shot and start my drawing over that proxy. It works for me.

follow up to that weird giger'esque thing i posted few weeks ago, deciding on a much more simple look for my team's android game. This is a mockup for level 1 background, the player will not see all of this at once, and there should be parallax type background scrolling, and bubbles and shit later.
If you don't know what you're looking at, thats pretty much the idea, you play and fight microorganisms, and from all the references i've found, not much recognizable. So "organic abstract" is my design philosophy in this game.
Thoughts?

Originally, no. I was trying to learn how to just work a lower-poly model (been referencing Ben Mathis' stuff quite a bit lately), but you're about the third person to suggest it so I might do so anyways.
Well, probably in Mudbox. I've tried ZBrush a few times but don't enjoy it that much. I'll be learning it/Mudbox ANYWAYS since it's obviously good to know, but I honestly enjoy building lower poly-models more.

I like this a lot! I'd recommend putting some space between the pilot's face and the wing though. The scarf is a good indicator that he's there, but I think having the profile of his face strongly visible will help the first read of the image.

no animate-able eyes? thats too bad.. but then again, this is PC, who the f thinks about the next step in character creation eh? ;)
the couple of cartoon ducks or whatever that I've kinda modeled and animated, have all been kinda difficult to get the eyes done right on.. like, its not a round eye, so I didnt rly figure out how to set it up :P lazy and all..
looking good though!:poly136:

Generic sci-fi guy. Early work in progress.
Edit: Goddamnit, how do I make this image smaller?
Whatever. Link removed. I'll finish it first.
TNO - was it actually worth sculpting that? i would have just subd's the duck and accessories since thee are no real shapes that demand sculpting and TBH it would have a been a lot sharper.
Its good that you are practicing the whole workflow thing, but why make things harder on yourself

some quick stuff I did a couple of years ago where I had the kind of problem we got into. none of them are done using uv's or anything. marvin is just a plane with an alpha on it, animated using a joint. bugs eyes as well, and his eyesocket is rigged up with tons of joints (go game!) lol :)
problem here is also facial expressions. like brow movement and whatnot. blendshapes could work better than joints perhaps. together with a pupil on a uvanimation.
ooooh well! :)
keep working on that duck TNO. I'd wanna see him turn into a Darkwing Duck rather than a vanilla one, but whatever :D haha, next one eh!:poly136:
TBH is To Be Honest:) TNO
I just think if stuff needs sculpting then scuplt it, but the beak came out looking a bit melty so in my book it would be better to model that sub d, then for the body, you could a little hint of feathers for the sculpt.I did something similar here

How about replacing your current eye pupils with alpha-transparent planes and have them animate-able instead? You could move them around instead of rotating a sphere like you would otherwise do.

I'm working on many different things at the same time
here I'm testing the ground textures and playing a bit with the unity terrain.
The shot is edited in ps to stretch the colors to the whole range. (level)
I hope I can do this with screen effects in the pro version.. Otherwise the result would be poor :(
http://www.maginot.eu/space/mgto/projects/demoon/misc/demoon_ingame_06.jpg
Looks cool, but what do you mean by stretching the colors? can you not get the effect you want by adjusting texture contrast and lighting?

commander_keen/felipefrango: man I really was going to write a big text about this but after testing a little bit around I was able to set the color levels of the textures (without damaging them) and it DOES now look ingame like the edited shot.
But nonetheless.. how big would be the performance hit of full screen color correction?
cheers :)

It does not scale down bc its not wider then allowed. the height is unimportant.
commander_keen
09-01-2010, 01:07 PM
rollin, a brightness/contrast post effect should be pretty cheap. All you need is a texture sample, multiply by constant, and power() by constant. It would require SM2 (because thats the lowest shader model unity allows you to make programmable shaders afaik) so on very old hardware it wouldnt be rendered. I would imagine that on any graphics hardware that supports it you wouldnt see any performance hit for such a simple shader.
If your going for very low end specs like facebook games or something I would suggest not relying on any advanced shading/post effects for the game and dropping them out on low end hardware for performance, which is easy to do with a quality slider and the shader LOD system.

awesome fuse, I always hover over images in this thread then notice it was posted by you and get a little nostalgic glow. Futzed around with this a little more.
I went over the whole thing with a thin wash of burnt sienna then did a titanium white and burnt sienna mix for touching up the highlights. It made the highlights a lot warmer and less harsh than they were in the old version. Paint is fun!
I'm looking a bit fatter in this than I should, so I really need to clean up the edge of the face. I also need to add a bit more depth to that eye since it's looking like one big, flat shape instead of something with actual dimension. That said, I kind of like how it's coming out. It actually looks a lot like me, aside from the fatness.

Just a little something I'm working on from time to time.
The high-poly base is actually 8 months old, and was started for a now dead mod project.
Recently a friend showed me his Mossberg Shotgun, and I felt like making one too, but instead of starting all over, I revised and continued on this bad-boy.
I still got some stuff to add here and there, but for now I hope you all dig it!

So I created this character back maybe at the start of 2009, and I never finished him. So today, I decided to complete this guy.
Here are some rough lines I put together in a few minutes, keeping alot of the same elements from the pencils in my old sketchbooks.
And of course, it ain't done. I won't go to zbrush until I'm completely satisfied.
Sorry if the pic is so large, damn dropbox.
Bumped, went through major changes.

Yep, single shot. For when you only need one REALLY big bullet.
Long story short, I lost some of the textures in a power outage and had to remake them, some mistakes caused the sampling to get messed up and as a result certain parts are blurred. I was just too annoyed by the time I finnaly finished it to go back and fix it, so I stuck it on the pile of things i'd like to go back and finish.
edit: I just hit the report button and typed this whole message in before realising what box I was typing in. I'm tired. :(

If I were you, I'd shift the hue of the darker colours just a tad to provide some variety. It's a personal style thing, I know, but I think the light/dark contrast on the clothing isn't very eye catching because it's mostly the same hue.

laro - good for a first shot, but you got too detailed too fast. Your an expert at leaving detail out and only choosing to add the details you need, so I know you get it. Focus on the big, macro forms until you are super happy with them, then move on to the medium size forms. Don't add a single detail until each larger shape is just the right form with just the right edge sharpness or softness. I love your work so I can't wait to see how it goes.
