I'm working on a redesign of my portfolio so it doesn't look so much like a bad PowerPoint presentation. I have more work to do.

I like the image layout, but I'm not crazy about that big blue font.
little update here, still need to do the bandana properly, and I'm not sure what to do about the gloves, googling 1850's railroad worker attire was not as fruitfull as one might expect:

Swizzle: i think there are to many gradients going on, the blue is to vibrant and your header is way to big . try to keep it more subtle

@ScudzAlmighty (http://www.polycount.com/forum/member.php?u=27918)
You will probably find that rail workers from that time period didn't wear gloves.

But yeah, hard to find any refernce for that time period and subject.
Looks good, and as Neox said, much better compared to the earlier rendition.

I love this character, I think it's fabulous.
BUT, the stitches don't fit the game. Compared to the rest of the TF2 universe, those stitches add far too much detail.
nice dado ad scudz!
Made more progress, and started on a prelim texture, though i might have to redo some of it as i was messing with proportions while i was starting to texture.... Things look so much different as soon as you add texture.
I really need to do more 3d.... i havent finished anything since college last year.

Ruz + Scooby - Thanks for the feedback guys! I think pushing it more towards monster or human is a really good idea. The sculpting was a bit rushed so I'm going to go back and look at all the volumes etc as well.
As for your displacement issues - I've only ever used them in mudbox to XSI so not too sure, in my mini guide thread i've done a really quick write up of geting them working nicely between those two packages - it may be no help at all but maybe theres some transferable info :P

@Prophecies: Glad to see you got your wing modeling issues resolved, it's looking good. I find it unlikely that such fine detail sich as the tips of the talons would be left intact over time, IMHO it's one of the first things that would degrade and break off.

Oh cool. Try just chopping parts of the geometry off on the fine tips, like on the talons, the tail, maybe the tip of the longer feathers on the end of the wings...
amazing imageswielding marks is superb attention subtle details.
the only thing that i question is the 3 chevrons modeled into the rudders, a sergeant/ Senior Airman plane? i just feel those would be left to texture only.
but also i think they are upside down?

Photoshop, just use a round opacity brush
really? thats awesome, iv only ever really used ps for making like web design type stuff, might have to have a go at some real painting when i finally get a tablet
It has some nice brush settings, but no blending is done between the brush and the pixels you're painting on, like in Painter / Sai / MyPaint, or basically anything else. They've got some new painting tools in the works for the next version, but it's pretty brute force as it is.
I kind of like it that way, personally - predictable behaviour - but the dynamic brush blending the other apps have is really best for painting. I just prefer Photoshop's level of control... over layers, blending methods (like overlay) and colour editing; makes for a modular experience, good for nondestructive editing and such before flattening the layers down to keep on painting. :) Plus I can cut off a limb and rotate it if it looks wonky; can't always do that so easily in the more artsy programs.
Ideally I would just draw it right the first time, but heh, always learning. edit: yeah, the thing with tablets is that you have pressure sensitivity, controlling the opacity (or size if you prefer that) of the brush is absolutely key. Painting with a mouse sucks not only because it's awkward and unnatural but you would have to spend forever clicking and clicking strokes at a low opacity to get any smooth blending at all.
You should totally look into getting a tablet. :) Drawing digitally is freeing, no materials required, so it's easier to study and improve too. Nothing beats knowing how to draw well with a pencil, but taking that skill into digital is where it's at these days, IMO.

Planned to be a very short cinematic (matinee) of a train going by. I just got back to it after a little break. It's really busy right now, but wanted to share progress so far before I started digging deep into this again.

Y_M, try setting up a scene in whatever 3D package you use with your rock model and a single directional light above and then bake the lighting into a texture. You can then use it as a base for a snow mask. It'll make it easy to have the snow on just the top parts of the rock.

That looks like a pain to hold Jesse. Specifically the bump right where the web of your hand would go. If the grip is the proper scale, the trigger and trigger guard seem too small. If the trigger are is human scale then the grip is too big.
Otherwise seems good. Maybe a little "techy for techy's sake" for my taste. I feel like you could simplify some of the forms and end up with a more compelling piece.

hey Jesse, I like the front part from that gun so far, but I am not sure about the two beveled shapes in the back of the gun, I have the impression they are a bit imposed. There is already quite some detail in the front, might be smart to have the back cleaner, as to let the design breath more. Also I agree with tumerboy about the grip. Hope this helps!

the bricks on the floor feel far too large and really make this place feel tiny. i would scale them back a bit to about 1/4 or 1/2 of their current size. other than that, looking ace!
based off the lowest arch on the wall, which is what i would take as a little taller than the height of the player, these look like they would come up to between their knees or their waste.

I agree about the scale thing in Prophecies' environment, the big bricks do make the place look rather tiny and I think you could keep it's chunkiness while scaling them down a bit.

i hope you are doing some imagination work in between those studies, its hard to apply what you are learning to your own work otherwise. Also still life from real life subjects is alot better practice than photos. Onions and any other vegetable or fruit are great for colour.

Not a massive update. But I've finally worked out how this thing works after staring at the reference photo's.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2528431/WIP/TKB-011_wip04_ejection_port.jpg
The ejection tube is still there but it no longer running above the whole length of the barrel. Its just shorter and curves off to the side. Judging by the photo on the left I would say that the tube is angled slightly to deflect the shell out at a more of a right angle.
That's fucking bizarre. It must deposit the cartridge there on the bolt's retraction and eject it when the bolt returns. It's awesome tbh but i bet it's the first thing that would break.

@neox: If you look close enough you should see that the barrel is not lined up with the blade. But i can´t imagine where the fire pin would be, aside from that the hole where the sheels are supposed to fly out is to small even for a small calibre.

You know what design is? Design is the fusion of form and function. Good design describes its function out of its form. It shows you how to handle and what to do with it without words. By just make it look cool its just random.
Its not a good or cool design if you ask how it works.
The model you are talking about looks good in modeling technical wise, but lacks design.

Thanks Conte!
acapulco, you're talking about industrial design rather than general design. General design is how something is aesthetically structured. By I.D. standards, it is pretty awful, as it's just a greebled up rod with blades and guns stuck to it with questionable usability. However when I extrapolated the sort of mechanical collage Mezz used in her concept (http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu76/Mezz26662/Sketches/LongWeaponedGirl.jpg) I decided to take it to a more ridiculous level with no serious concern regarding functionality.
SpeCter, This is off the top of my head, but I would imagine the firing pin would operate on a sort of oscillating mechanism going back and forth between barrels while another mechanism is sliding bullets into the chambers and perhaps a curved chute leading to the top where the shells are pushed out of the opening. However I think I'll take you're suggestion on making the opening larger.
Swampbug, that's looking pretty legit so far!
