"The Room"
Made in 2 month. I discovered the world of the modeling (and texturing) for the first time (under XSI) and the UDK too. I tried to make a library with a huge staircase.
A lot of textures are wip (staircase, books on the shelves, window's ray, ...), I'm too lazy to redo them, one day maybe... I just updated my scene for the june bêta render (redone lighting for adapting to the new increase contrast).

I was going to put some goggles hanging around his neck, but I decided it'd make the already busy upper chest way too noisy.

Funny, I was thinking about that movie as I was building this guy and I couldn't figure out what was making me think of it. Interesting.

Wow Swizzle! Can imagine him fitting right in with a wild west era TF2. :D
Since Orge/Torchlight hates me I went back to modding UT2004, very basic modular pieces for a flying vehicle ONS map.

Team coloured lights are modified banners, so when you capture a node the whole thing changes colour.

imho the moustash should come up a little bit in his philtrum, would give it a nicer shape overall.
@scudz on the head would ruin that lovely hair!

Swizzle - woah thats awesome man! Whats that for?
Here is something I've been working on a bit in the last few days (also working on an entry for the low poly Time Machine comp) Gave him a 5k limit and hit that nail on the head! UV unwrap is done now so just gotta tighten it up and then start to texture.

this is my progress for the LPC#3 Time Machine (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74389) comp. 2k on the nose, 512x512 diffuse with alpha channel, GI. Not 100% sold on the orange so if you have any suggestions please shoot!

After years of modeling in Maya, i finally took a couple of days to work with Max. The DT tutorial proved helpful, and I'm pretty happy with the 'monkey see- monkey do approach. It's also interesting to note the different names for functions in the comparison of the two apps.

Looking great so far.
Nice Start HAL, I don't think I've ever seen this mech done properly, despite it being so popular.
Oh and it's not a Fuchikoma (which are the smaller ones, like the Tachikomas, but from the comic), it's the T08A2 spider-tank.

You're talking about albedotint, which is, according to valve, a "work in progress feature" which is "unsupported."
I thought "unsupported" might have just meant they dont offer any help on using it, so i tried it out anyway, but it didn't seem to work.
Did you ever actually manage to get it to work?
Yeah, I did. The DoD guys used it a bit as well. It's a bit weird though. As I said, you really have to crank up the spec map to be very bright to notice any real effect.
Nice hal, you might want to pay a bit more attention to detail, especially to the subtle changes in edge hardness.
Going to try and polish this one to finish, still really early days though.

I think I've been over-estimating my skill and experience level and getting frustrated and not finishing things.. taking on things too ambitious and not even getting close to completing them.
Finally realised this and it feels great to be making things, and it's fun again :)
So my current asset is this crate using this concept art by Colin Geller (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2v8PX7tZi7k/S3p2cnH_RqI/AAAAAAAAAp8/uNNgsbuqoJk/s1600/RCF2_SpaceCargo):

simmo - good choice! finish stuff and move on! much more satisfying!
kharn - nice start. There was a post from kevin johnstone a while ago that milky textures work best with lightmass, not really sure exactly what else he posted about it, but it might be worth to look up his threads (they're worth looking up anyways : )
Looks pretty nice. I know youre trying to follow the concept to the T, but those inward rectangular bevels are kinda boring. Some things just dont translate that well/cool from concept>3d.

yeah I do agree on that. They look "ok" in the concept, but they give me the impression they are a bit forced, I`ll dare to say that even a flat surface well textured might look better. You can think of small compartiment doors or something like that might look good. If not modeling, follows well the concept. Keep on!

sahib, maze: Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I was trying to follow the concept, but the bevels aren't that great on the model as you've pointed out. I figure if I make the concept, it's much easier to make changes that fit the design, which isn't really a strength of mine.
I'll play around with it some more.. maybe make the indent as long as the case? I'll start a post as you suggested sahib!

Thanks =] . Pales in comparison to your canvas stuff, but I try to make due :p Kinda have a theme of a chick with a shark bite(my friend is a bit infatuated with sharks, and wants it incorporated into the design in 1 way or another).
Dude I've tried doing artwork for friends' bands, and lets just say I've moved in other, less disastrous directions since then. It's harder to do a solid screen-printable design than most people think. That linework is badass and reminds me of a few mean punk rock tshirt designs I've seen. Smooth chicas + skeletons is tough to pull off and oh-so-hot when you do. Definitely post up that final design when it's done.

Jesse, it might be a good idea to use a RGB channel texture for your spec, spec mask and variation, having 3 textures in one map could make it a bit more efficient. looks like there are lots of options for that material, should prove pretty versatile.

I'm genuinely baffled at getting compliments for 2D; I completely screw up when I have to make something from the top of my head, so I do thought I'd practice by copying to maybe one day get good enough to partake in the Concept Tag. That's where the good artists are.

Tail looks a bit odd. Normally, if a cat's tail is big 'n fluffy, it would either start smaller and get bigger near the end or it'd be uniform.
http://www.mooseyscountrygarden.com/cats-dogs/long-fluffy-cat.jpg
http://www.thecatgallery.com/images/Fire-fluffy-tail-2.jpg
rollin: far apart eyes are intended and make him look more stupid, thats what we wanted, a bit like totoro, i know it looks stupid, but it is intended that he looks stupid, maybe i'll test making em bigger moire like the cat bus in totoro, but i'm not sure
yes his head is pointing a bit upwards as he would touch the ground if he doesn't xD
but basicly he will just be lying around, you will never see him move, but he will always be around, like ninja cat or creepy watson in that sherlock holmes game
as for the tail i i had it thinner in the initial blockout, but we dexided to make it thicker and more pointy to the end, it could be more evenly thick, i agree i'll do that but its going to stay pointy and not rounded :)

Neox: I really like the overall shape of that cat (the tapering tail is very cool) but I think that a couple of the facial features are tipping it over from quirky to creepy-looking. I think that having the eyes far apart is fair enough, but making the lower lip so pronounced and human-like feels kind of odd to me. It's pretty cool looking otherwise though! Good to see you still trucking along with Airborn!

will play around a bit more with the lower lip thanks, do you mean the general shape, or the reddish coloration or the combination of both?
As for airborn, yeah we have been slowed down by a hell lot around the E3 thanks to brink and crysis2 and some other productions our people work on, so it got pretty silent - besides the registered trademark that we now own.
But now slowly but steadily we start to get back into business, having a second coder to support us will hopefully help speed things up a bit :)

I'm kinda stuck at the moment on a few things. Not sure if I want to "zombie" up the skin or leave it clean as the current outlines are, and I'm not sure if I wanna stay color or not. I like the particular colors I've chosen(especially in regards to a shirt design, as it's only 3 colors other than linework). In either case I will probably keep the blood at the very least. But other than deciding on these 2 things, I just need to do some typo and it's done.

Well, I think this is final. It's what they wanted, and I think I'm ok with it too. I attempted zombifying the body some, but it just took so much away from the shark bite and the face, which are the main focal points. Text wasn't really what I wanted to go with, but it's the font they wanted, so I was a bit handcuffed there. All in all, I'm fairly happy with it I think.
Line for her back just in front of the elbow looks really weird man, it doesnt match up with the line below the shirt/towel.
Looks really good otherwise
Came out great med, good call on going with the clean body design too, hit the nail on the head in regards to keeping the focal points clear.
edit: agree with muzz about the back
Medestruit
07-07-2010, 10:54 PM
Hm, yeah now that you mention it hah. Would it work if I thinned out the body area above the shirt, i.e. bringing it further toward the face side of the image from the elbow? From the angle the body is twisted, that line was more to suggest the back muscle.

Well, it wouldn't be exactly like that. Bringing it that far over to the left is too far. I think I have it figured out though. The reason it couldn't come that far is because first, the shoulder strap of the dress would just be floating there when it's supposed to be tighter fitting, and there's a sight line of the lower back floating. Here's what I mean.

Hence why I said the border and all that jazz was only for show, and won't be on the print. It's a standard frame I have saved out(with the signature on it). I have another similar frame with a stamp logo of mine as well. The only thing that gets sent to the printer on this is the girl and the typo.
As for the type, it's really the style of music that determined that. It's the font the band wanted to use, was pretty much out of my hands.

Hot damn Neox 3DCoat's retopo looks even a bit better than Topogun. Have you tried both and stuck with 3DCoat? Also curious as to what kind of hotkey setup you're using in that video if you don't mind divulging <:]
i used polyboost first, then topogun, never really liked it that much and used zbrush instead (there is still one feature that zbrush has, that no other app has) and then tried 3dcoat and since then i'm with it, it has a great toolset, as for the shortcuts, strangely i only use space for the menu and no other shortcuts at all, dunno never really changed the shortcuts in 3dcoat, besides the ones for sculpting- which i dislike in 3dcoat

Neox : Thanks for showing that vid. It was really informative. The mixture of tri's and quads I am guessing is to bring more support to certain area's of the mesh? Since the HP has already been sculpted it doesn't have to stay all quads....is this right? Thanks again.

3dcoat looks very quick indeed.
zstrips! very awesome for large areas, well you could create one large polygon in 3dcoat and subdivide it as needed but its just too unpredictable what the projection then does
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/4904/zstrips.jpg
Katana: its the lowpoly mesh, why would that be quad only? :)
i optimized some stuff in max afterwards and kreated more tris even, be it for supporting the shading or be it if aquads would just waste polies in certain areas

I just always thought that things were more predictable if done in quads, but since Airborn is in UDK, I know that the mesh has to be in tris, as opposed to Zbrush, where it works smoother in quads...So I guess in the end, it goes back to whatever gets the job done...nice cat btw and I like how you arrived at the name/concept...congratz on the 'R'.

TheMadArtist: Nice idea. Proportions are off though. Calfs need to be longer, perhaps even the thighs and arms slightly shorter. Put alot of focus on his hands and hair and of course the face, though it's fairly simple. If you want to have him guitarhero-style then you should definately exagerate his proportions alot more. Make him super thin and his hair and bucket huge.

I like the outfit, it's different from the Heavy which is good. One could argue that it's a bit too detailed for TF2, but I still like it. I'm not really a fan of the beige/sand colour belt, to be honest, but probably the biggest thing to work on, imo, would be the head. Ther'es just something odd about it, I think it's the eye area. Like circles around the eyes from sleepless nights or something, which has no place in tf2. I can't explain it :(
ScudzAlmighty
07-10-2010, 10:10 AM
it's definatley meant to be a bit more detailed than reg tf2 (it's probably going to stay just a sculpt), somewhere inbetween the game detail and the concept sketches. the belts and bandanna are still placeholder right now so colour/detail is completely up for grabs.
I find with the head that the details read differently depending on how close it is,
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/mrsunfish/1850HeavyWip8.jpg
so while the eye's probably are a bit too baggy underneath, I think they work up close.
or at least I think they do...
vcool
07-10-2010, 10:14 AM
The face certainly looks better up close.
I think what I found weird were the eyes themselves. I think you painted them on? The fact would feel different with actual eyes.

Scudz, the eyes need way more depth, they're closer to being a plane than being real eyes at this point. Pretty sweet model otherwise, pretty cool how the old fangled tf2 team is coming together.

Neox, man that paintover is awesome, but it looks exactly like a Neox, if you catch my meaning, and I'd really like people to think it looks like a Scudz... maybe I can find a nice middle ground though.
thanks for the feedback guys
I liked Neox's paintover so much I wanted to see it mirrored, of course the face is a bit squished, but I really like the head shape and style and thinks it fits much better in the TF2 universe.

http://www.polyphobia.de/nonpublic/op2.jpg
scudz i'm not saying you have to do it exatcly the same way, but i hope i can give you enough points you can look at, basicly you have a lot of random appearing shapes going on, you need to clean that, tf2 is all about simplicity, my overpaint could even be more cleaned, no quesions about that
also you need to focus on flow a bit more, it doesn't matter if you copy my eye or the mouth or the nose, but your mouth is super straight, has no organic feel at all and the eyes are very almond shaped, very symmetrical and wall-eyed

naw I get that, and sorry I didn't mean to sound ungratefull or anything, you've got some very good points and I fully intend to copy as many of them as I can, I just meant that when I look at your paintover (more the first one) there very first thing I would think if it wasn't my sculpt is "Neox made this."
And while that speaks volumes for your signature style and talent, in the same way that you could spot a Kolby Jukes or a Tim Applebee a mile off, it might just leave me as that guy who isn't Neox. If that makes any sense.
and of course it's much more likely that I'm just insane and over-thinking it to begin with so I'll shut-up.
For now.

Looks nice so far, edges may be a bit tight in spots. I'm not sure what else you have done, but this seems like a sort of silly way to work, just detailing one side of a mesh before doing anything else? You should make a proper blockout, and then work on stuff in sensible peices, what you have now is going to be a pain when you put everything together(joining the two sides and any other work) it would be better to start with solid chunks and get your base in there, otherwise it gets really hard to make any changes when you've got a mesh this dense but dont have the rest of the gun in there...

The Heavy is looking awesome Scudz, but he looks too intelligent for a heavy replacement, if you know what I mean? When I look at the TF2 heavy, I think of a giant dopey looking guy. What you have now looks like he's really deep in thought, not really one to run out risking his life with a gattling-gun.
If you were going for a more intelligent looking heavy though, then nevermind this :P

Finally managed to get some more of this gun done.
Kind of crappy renders, but its late.
I ended up spending too much time screwing around with the forward ejection port. But I've got it pretty much where I want it to be now. The shells now get ejected out to the left instead of over the barrel in the line of fire. This also has the added bonus having some details in the FPS view.
From the reference pics I found this gun seems to use the same magazine as the AK-47 so I went with that, and made an extended clip for the hell of it.

Scooby that is pretty cool man!
One small nitpick is how you connected the sternomastoid muscles, they should be more V shaped at the center and part of it splits and attaches further away on the clavicles...of course the form can change depending on the fat and skin hanging.

Joe: Thanks man! Thats high praise coming from you and I appreciate it. I'm a bit lost as to what I want to do re: hairstyle so that's why he doesn't have one yet. Hair is a major weakness for me. Im a bit surprised at the positive response to this guy as yet again for me...not a scrap of reference was used and I just freeballed this guy out of a voxel sphere.
Psyko: Good eye. Yeah, I noticed that myself. Truth is though, the shoulders and such are going to be covered by clothes/armor/whatever and I just added all that in so the neck wasn't just floating there like so many other heads I've done. I wouldn't have lazed out and done better work if I'd actually bothered with clavicles but again since its going to be covered...fuck it.
butt_sahib: Yeah man...that rim light is way too strong and the aliasing its causing isnt doing you any favors. Also your reflection map is a bit sharp and does not appear to be masked by your spec. It just looks uniform across the surface, which is not good. Otherwise it looks like a pretty good job. Keep at it!
Massbot: I always like your heads. The lips seem a bit thin or lacking interior volume especially as they go toward the corners of the mouth, making the cheeks appear paper thin. This character is hard to read, not having any additional information. He could be a REALLY messed up human, or a very human looking monster of some type. Its kinda hard to tell. I think pushing him more in either direction will help him stand out and tell his story a little better.
