what's bothering me about bruce willis (currently watching pulp fiction again) - the shoulders are much too wide and blocky. the face is however nearly perfect.

Hey i thought you were a programmer these days, good to see you doing art.
mop is still in the game, we just needed his technical skills for some time ;)
Awesome render!
d2king10 - yeah I don't think its as bad as you make out, but I will rein his bagginess in a bit
Notorious P.I.G - I thought my bruce willis had a body of sorts:)
e-freak - grr I have already taken in his shoulders. will check my refs again

Working on a new sword. Might add a tachometer in the center of the blade to show when the gears are up to speed. Highpoly almost done.

To answer a couple of questions, here's a quick process layout (click for full-resolution):
http://www.greveson.co.uk/dump/foto_process.jpg (http://www.greveson.co.uk/dump/foto_process_big.jpg)
Side note: If you're feeling adventurous you could also import a higher subdivision level or re-topology mesh from ZBrush and use Skin Wrap (3ds Max) or Wrap deformer (Maya) to attach it to the rig, and use displacement and/or normal-maps to render out a proper animation of the highpoly :)
I might give that a shot at some point just to see how it goes.
Far out Mop, thanks man :D

LoTekK: I think your mesh is spot on, but the texture could use some work - colour picking, specifically. Celeste's hair pretty much borders on white, it's very bright and a bit desaturated. Her jeans are much darker in the game than you have them. There's also something off about the colour red you're using, I think, but I can't tell exactly. I'd grab a screenshot and compare the colours if I were you.
Also, am I the only one who thinks it's funny that Celeste's shirt and belt are red, when in Mirror's Edge red usually means GRAB THIS?

achillesian: I think you really need to tone that spec down as well as the bump on the text (it wouldn't generally be sticking out that far). You also need to throw in some variation in the texture, right now it is pretty much all just one flat color with some slick scratching, not enough to give it the illusion of a barrel.

The "eye patch" looks strange to me, maybe it's because it has no texture. I am not talking about the lack of symmetry, that's great, but the general look of it is weak and looks like a pancake.

To answer a couple of questions, here's a quick process layout (click for full-resolution):
(...)
Hey MoP just saw your tutorial but can't seem to get it right since I don't know anything about mental ray (or any renderer actually), so could you maybe upload an example file with the correct light setup and a cube or something so we could take a closer look at it?
That would be very appreciated.
Cheers!

Nice work mikeF, you nailed the assets pretty much perfectly! A couple of things struck me:
I think you're mixing too much color in the same area. When we were working on ME we made sections of colors, not mix them all on one roof. Also the rooftop structures seem a bit too dense/cluttered, you can have some more empty space on a roof imHo
Also the roof that you need to access to finish this section seems to be blocked on all corners? The slanted green rooftop structure is placed on the corner blocking you to get up there? Also try and keep the goal (the red door) clearly visible and not point it in a direction where the player wont notice it. With playable rooftops you also need to be careful what you place on the side walls of that building, it might give the player the idea they can reach or do moves on it. For instance the flagpoles could let people try do a swing and die, or the yellow sun shields on the right side can make people get on top of them and go down a floor and maybe even reach the street level (that is of course if you plan to have all these moves in your game as well).
Of course this could just be a test piece you were doing to get the assets/lighting to work properly, but I still wanted to point these things out as they are easy to look over.
Edit: Had to do another render before calling it quits today, think its getting closer now.

Some things I am currently working on at the moment. The first one is a front bulkhead, modeled using polys, not SubD's or NURBS, just for the challange. I'm aware (now) that the proportions are off, but it's okay, it was just for modeling practice. The second one is King K. Rool done in a similar style from the old Donkey Kong Country series. I plan on modeling a ship as a scene to make a more complete finalized image.

It's an old engine which unfortunately doesn't use normal maps - it uses greyscale bump maps. But it actually looks okay in the engine regardless. Sadly this is like the first piece of personal art I've actually completed since 2006. lol :(

Thanks a lot man, much appreciated, especially from someone that worked on the original.
These are all great things that i'l be keeping in mind, but as you guessed this is really just a test scene for color as well as modularity. I have about 2 more sets of major props to finish up before i can start doing some actual city layout. But the way i've got it set up now i can drag and drop everything for a complete rooftop in about 5 minutes, so that should go fairly smooth.
Then its onto background buildings, not sure how i'm going to handle that stuff just yet

So yeah, first post of the year. Something I am working on:
A L4D2 campaign with Fearlezz, a great TF2 mapper. We're doing each 2 maps (that is planned, maybe a 5th if we go fast but I doubt it). Tons of custom models and textures (and hopefully I can compile a snowshader). But meh I'll make a thread once I have more to show, this is only an hour in. This is a level that has not been done before, an indoor subtropical swimming pool (or whatever it is called in English). It's just the lobby so far :)
Yes you are allowed to laugh with source engine btw.

Just some quick WIP shots of my Pawn for the mini comp over at GA. I'm doing a zombie based on this concept by John Grello (http://cghub.com/images/view/39805/). Clothes are just blocked in to give me an idea of where I should focus on detailing. Crits welcome.

Hey frump I saw that on GA. I Keep thinking its a different guy because of the avatars. Anyway I think you should lengthen the arms a tad, and the shins and feet look a bit long and thick.
Well, don't agree on lengthening the arms, I think they look a bit longer than the average human being actually, the thing that looks a bit weird to me is the shin to foot area, can't tell what it is exactly, but I think it could be a bit shorter.
I have never studied anatomy so I could be completely wrong ^^, nice model anyway.

if its a big element of design theres nothing wrong in making it look good, and that way you can avoid using alpha.

Well he says this is part of a ship, so i would imagine this sort of prop would be instanced a lot, so adding in all that raw geo may not seem like a big deal on a singular asset, but if its something that is repeated 40 times, its going to make a huge impact.

@dkk: Haha yeah, I'm looking for a new avatar to unify across all forums and stuff. Thanks for the crits, I'll play with the length of the forearms and the feet and see what looks best.
@ima: The feet and ankles are very wip, I just roughed them in to get something ready to present, I'll definitely be working on them. I think what's making them seem long is that the protruding bones of the ankle are positioned too low right now, so I can definitely fix that.:)
@bommel: Nice! that looks rad, I really like the presentation.

Damnit, I was going to do a model of Spike some day but now I feel like that would be a bit less original.
Good proportions so far but you might want to retopo him.

exactly, if you count the rings in the weels there would be 8 rings on each cannon, there will be 16 cannons instanced on the ship, that would be 128 rings and if each ring would have 50 poly's or so, it would already be ~6000 poly's for such small details.

seven, looking good! I think maybe you should make the edges of the globules more crisp and maybe put some rimming around some of them. They're looking blurry compared to crisper details of the face
whoa, nice seven. I agree with supa, could use some nice crisp edges, maybe some little filaments of stretched flesh... he also kinda looks like he has a mustache.

Just curous Racer445, for a low poly normal mapped version, how much of that would you bake in as opposed to modelling it?. nice anyway
coming along nice Emil - like the that fact you gave it the assymetrical look
Cool stuff beartraps, though perhaps the face needs a bit more work. Her cheeks seem a bit flat

Rollin mc awesome sauce!
Love the character man, only thing that is a bit hard to read is the fur along his collar, but maybe after you tweak the materials as you said, it could read a bit better.
Either way, awesome execution, and another solid piece for your portfolio.

Beartraps that looks really great! Those folds are impressive and really help sell the fabric.
Ruz, the wavy bumps on the side will get normaled in, as well as the screws and other small detail, but I'll probably model in a a good bit of the detail since it's such a common prop.
edit: Rollin, pretty cool stuff!

great character rollin.
sword looks a little short though. Might be the perspective.
A rough estimate (from me) is that the blade is normally 3 and a 1/4 times as long as the handle.

Rollin, that character is awesome. As for the fur perhaps you should use alphas as Johny suggested, that way it can give some nice silhouette that can really sell it.
Raven, that composite is pretty creepy, the lighting on the cg stuff needs some work though. And when the box is opened and the skull comes in, it comes in way to abruptly, perhaps you should fade it in.
and thanks again for the kind words, you all have made my day =)

That bus looks like a balloon! (except for the wheels)
you mean the specular doesnt read as metal? Im still working on it so yeah the blue is meant to be a bit like waterproof paint/rubbery but I will work on making the rest more metallic
thanks gcmp the concept shadows look a bit odd on that piece - too flat and straight edged
nice rollin, but something about the head area bugs me. not quite sure what it is though

Yeah I see the same thing. I don't know if the dark bits are just munge or normalmapped dents/damage (they look like this?) but they look like dents and bulges like a collapsing balloon, and not like metal at all.
