rolin: thanks man I try. There are a lot of really interesting weapon designs out there--more people on polycount generally need to do research. It seems like such a waste to see really talented guys spend time on aping an existing in-game art asset from a popular title? what's that all about
LoTekk: Hahah shhhh, a De Lisle is definitely on my list, though I think I'll just go ahead and build a proper SMLE Mk III model first and use that as a base. Didn't know the Welrod was in Silent Storm, very cool.
I think the De Lisle was in COD or Medal of Honor as well. Not sure which one it was but it was.

duck: his skin color is too monochrome and red on tattoos don't show up that saturated on dark skin, not even brand new tat I think. My brother has a grim reaper tat wearing a red robe and it's not that saturated now and wasn't when he first got it.
Also the details of his chest are getting lost in the mix of his body tats.

Duck> Nice work, looks sweet.
I'm not buying the Japanese tattoo on his right arm that stretches down to his hand. Generally these Japanese motifs aren't placed that low on the arm, they usually end at the wrist area. My opinion in this case is based on looking at a lot of tattoos. Also desaturate and blur them a bit, especially on that right arm.

Ah nice one Vrav, thanks. Awesome gif too, looks a little like a dance :D
Yeah Paul Richards is a legend! I should go back and read some of the BabeLab posts, I struggled a bit with proportions since it's a gnome and they're kind of short and squat.
My main focus is the painting on the lighter half of the top, I can't seem to get it looking good. It's supposed to be a Lycra/Spandex kinda material but the shading just isn't working for me. I can't work out where the shadows/highlights would go.
Ahh, right. One thing that works for me, and this is only something I started doing very recently, but it helps a TON, so I have no idea why I never did it before.. is to place a white blob, arrow or perpendicular line in the general "location" or just directional location (think directional light in a game) on the image somewhere. This bright dot serves as a reminder to the eye, making it super easy to determine where form will receive light and where it will be in shadow, if you understand the contour of the object.
Kind of a two-dimensional reminder, since it doesn't really represent whether the light is in front or to the back, but that information can be stored in the head - since the depth of the lightsource is a single imaginary 'value', but the comparative direction constantly changing over the whole subject, having a sort of static, visual reminder of its placement or direction is super helpful.
As for the spandex, color choice plays a role; checking google images it seems there are a lot of different types with different sheerness and reflectivity—but after deciding on what you want (should there be a subtle bit of pink flesh showing through in the highlights, or is it opaque? etc), knowing your light direction will help. Also, don't shade with white and black - mess with the saturation too. I like saturated darks, even though they might not be scientifically accurate; sometimes they can be saturated, such as when a surface's light bounces back onto the same or a similar surface, ie blue surface + blue reflected light = more saturated... see the usual catch-all link, http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm
nilknarf815 > <3 the pigeons . I think some more work indicating shadows would help sell the depth a lot more ;)

It's like... using 101% of the UV space or something.
I wanna know as well. What is the secret?
http://www.blogiversity.org/blogs/panda_ponderings/tetris.jpg
oke oke, in all seriousnez,
For starts, when you are actualy unwrapping and not placing parts, do it with the thought of stacking them in mind, box liked shapes stack best, or maybe you can fit two alike pieces next to eachother to create a box shape.
I found that by prioritising my parts before trying to fit them in, works like a charm.
You see three areas here, the green one needs most attention, orange is mid level parts, and red is small things that get away with very little, and i sometimes even make a 4th group. This one will be, say a bottom of a cylinder you will never see, and those get the last option.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1559778/unwrapsetup.jpg
So you pick your big parts and place them in the corners, scale them to match there needs. Now you've done that, you start to scale some medium parts up or down before you place them, and you will get a first look at how this tetris game can fall into place.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1559778/unwraps.jpg
(Something to keep in mind is, the first time placing parts will almost never be the way they end up, dont think it is a waste or get angry if you pull it appart half way and try other variations.)
Looking at the img above, i found it a bit un organised, and would probably ended up with too much open spaces for my likings. So you drag some parts out, and try a different setup, what if i take that piece there, scale it, move it, and hmm... <beer>
Now that you have your setup you can shift things around and look at the parts you have left. Give them another round of priority. This thing needs the biggest space left, then that one, and those others will go there somehwre...
Thanks for the cool reactions guys, makes me smile :)
Harry
06-04-2010, 08:00 AM
that's exactly how i approach uvs man, do all the high priority areas first and work down to "high density" mapping. Sometimes i also find it's effective to arrange arbitrary groups of UVs into squares or rectangles and just tesselate them in the uv as if they are their own element

Hey mister Jack!
WHAATAAA!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1559778/bulroguvs.jpg
Sorry to be a downer here, but your uvs are tooooo tight, you'll have trouble here with mip-mapping when parts bleed into other areas, you generally want 4-8 pixels(depends on resolution of the image really).
Andreas
06-04-2010, 09:04 AM

Sorry to be a downer here, but your uvs are tooooo tight, you'll have trouble here with mip-mapping when parts bleed into other areas, you generally want 4-8 pixels(depends on resolution of the image really).
I don't think there's enough room to bake normals with 3 or 4 padding, unless its going to be a 2k texture.
EarthQuake
06-04-2010, 09:20 AM
Yeah, 4 is about the min i would want, on a 1024-2048. Ideally with that size you have 8-16 pixels inbetween islands.
Oh also, the larger the texture is, the more padding you need, not the other way around.
Well my thought is if its a portfolio piece, you can turn off mip-mapping, but you still need that normal padding.
EarthQuake
06-04-2010, 09:38 AM
Normal padding i usually crank up to 32/64 pixels or something, you can never have "too much" padding, i'm talking about the minimum physical space in between islands here.
Boo! boo!
true,
im cutting it real close in some areas to make it a 1024, might end up tweaking some parts. I want to give it a shot at 2048, and for that there is quite the room.
Some parts that lay close are floating items.
And others can get away with some bleeds.
Im just going to play chickin and go for it, giving it too much room, takes all the fun.. out of the job.
Snader
06-04-2010, 09:51 AM
This one will be, say a bottom of a cylinder you will never see, and those get the last option.
If it's never seen, why are you even putting it in the texture, and spend poligons on it? Would the holes have icky sideeffects?
Rens, living on the edge, you're so hardcore. :P
But seriously I hope it works.
Smartass,
There are always spots that need to be closed off, but dont need details.
/
zac, yeah man,
see what it does :D
Zack Fowler
06-04-2010, 10:33 AM
At full-size 1024 you might be fine, but once it mips down to a 512 and 256 you could get noticeable artifacts. Unless this is something that should never mip down like a FPV weapon, best practice probably is to pad according to the 1/2 or 1/4 scale mip rather than full size. Very clean packing job either way. Wouldn't be too difficult to add more space between islands if you decided to adjust.
The "portfolio piece" thing might be misleading, since you really aren't going to gain any noticeable texel resolution from using 2-3px padding over 4-6px padding unless you have a crazy number of islands. Given that, the point of making nice UVs on a portfolio piece is to show your UV skill, and if part of that perceived ability is a tendency to pack UVs too tight for standard game asset mipping you could end up shooting yourself in the foot.

One-upping gauss in obscurity of weapon choice, here's a low poly SDK Carbine (still WIP). Been meaning to do this up for years, but never got around to it. Anyways, this weapon, as far as I know, never actually saw service. It was commissioned by the German Secret Police Chief specifically for the plot to assassinate Hitler.
Bullpup design, bolt-operated (I still don't understand how you're supposed to work the bolt, given its placement), integral (takedown-able) noise/flash suppressor, custom 9mm subsonic round, modified Luger P08 magazine. Being ridiculously rare, I've found it impossible to find any angles other than side-on, though there are two pics of the weapon broken down into its component pieces, both sides.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/778345/gsdk-wip1.png
(If this ever sees use in an engine/game, it'll be for an X-Com/Jagged Alliance-ish game, so I'm not fussed about how the scope looks close-up).
(Also, I was well into the texturing when I realised I'd forgotten to un-mirror the stock, so the left side of it also has an ejection port and recess for the bolt handle. Doh)

I have loled a little, in my mouf.
been trying to conceptualize this turboprop(?) engine but i need to do more research. i have a ton of refs but i still need to go through and steal my favorite parts. so this is where i got just messing around, not very good but i'm glad i did it now, before i really start.
http://sleekupload.com/uploads/5/prace_enginewip05.jpg
this has also been another attempt to structure subd work ethic, thus more cylinders.
Sorry to be a downer here, but your uvs are tooooo tight, you'll have trouble here with mip-mapping when parts bleed into other areas, you generally want 4-8 pixels(depends on resolution of the image really).
<3 that I learn more here than I did at school... . This is good to know.

It's all about localizing textural details and avoiding visual noise. If you look closely at reference photos of something like a container in used but not rusted/damaged condition you will see that there isn't a ton of surface variation across the entire object but you will things like dirt, grime and drips tightly localized along areas of structure where it is allowed to build up.

ScoobyDoofus: Love this design. Aliens are certainly more fun to sculpt than frowny white guys.
xvampire: Some nice soft forms. Maybe push the chin or lower half of the face forward a little more to give the character more strength and presence.

Double Agree: Expanding on that; make a channel map for your diffuse/spec (pack a different gray-scale in each rgb channel) and you can get three times the mileage for a single shader with instances :)

It still looks quite flat, and I think its because you're not thinking about lighting areas as if they are 3d objects- your just making the edges dark and the centres light. Try painting in blocks of solid colour with a large brush first.

...thanks lonewolf, big fan of your work man, seriously... I remember taking a look at your stuff some time ago, and saying shit...I wish I get as good as that one day....haha!
for the character well...is the first one I am doing, it é lll be some sort of mad mole...mixed with some hardsurface stuff ;)... the mole is pretty basic for the time being ...so do some middle parts I just blocked out sort of...
the piece I post before is part of the track system I want to add, like a snowcat track or something similar... with a suspension system connect to the middle part... I have some quick sketches so no real guidelines... for it.

That looks great Glode, very nice. Seems a bit washed out though, I've seen that ruin a lot of good pieces. Here's something I've been working on to practice normal mapping and texturing. I only have the base colour/specular right now. HiRes (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k125/tgbayea/BSS1.png)

Glode : Hope you dont mind a paint over. I like your scene. I felt the red is too heavy across the scene washing out all your fine work. Using color to suggest break up, I offer this suggestion. It was quick, but in light of the Stormwind comment, I saw the same similarity.

Made this head in Scultris last week. Still needs eyes. I really like how it let's you extrude geometry in comparison to the ZBrush way with endless smoothing. But maybe that's just my inexperience with ZBrush.

Casper - i love the door. very coorl stuff. ^_^ I really hope that you are planning on finishing it out (texture and stuff). can't wait to see it finished, if you are going that far with it. i think that some mixed metal textures, some scratches, and some rust would make that door so bad ass, it would scare all the kids away!

A mutated giant naked mole rat...(not a Fallout tribute ;))...I considered starting an own thread for it, but I postpone that until I sculpted it...also I have yet to make the inside of the mouth...and I messed up the knee topo...I'll redo that and beef up the thigh a bit...about 6500 tris currently (without SubD obviously)...

Looking good. You'll probably want to tone down the saturation on the street as well as lowering the intensity of the cobblestone and eliminating a lot of the black separations...The buildings work well. I like the lighting from the window as well...looking forward to seeing your next update.

Ding ding ding, I know I need to make things way more sporting with Harry around :)
I know, I know, positively pedestrian given the last few. But I've fired an M3 at a full-auto range and I have a lot of respect for the piece of plumbing that looks suspiciously like a gun. Building the M3A1 variant, which removed the charging handle and lengthened the ejection port. You chambered a round by sticking a finger into a groove on the bolt and manually cycling it. About as simple as you can get.

Believe it or not the Owen was my first choice--I was all set to model but I was just too disappointed by not being able to find enough decent reference. Especially for the sight picture--I know it's offset like the Bren, but I didn't feel comfortable confabulating so much of the gun's design. Once I can track down some more angles on it I'll probably do an Owen.
The Avenger is totally badass, you're right about that. I would characterize the M3 and other Sten-alikes as the simplest you can get safely, all these zipguns are awesome to look over.

i collected owen gun references a while back, and i have a model which is superficially accurate as far as i'm aware. No internals unfortunately, but i researched my ass off (and have seen a few irl)
I also have a full set of refs of the f1 which were taken for me by a museum which used to be attached to the factory which made them. Interested? ;D

You should make the handle like a kinda shaped piece of wood, please don't leave it like a straight cylinder, that doesn't show detail and if its a symmetrical piece, it will not look as interesting. But the Iron piece looks pretty good for how simple that stuff is. That handle will really make it pop if you can pull it off correctly.
Also, Crazyfool, Its looking really nice! Whats it for? Maybe add some more detail to the belt, another leather loop around the places I have marked on the photo. Again, to add more detail and asymmetry to the photo, granted yours has alot more asymmetry than the axe.

only issue is that going under wouldnt support or hold the armour in place and would be purely aesthetical which is why I want to go over the shoulder. Theres still tons of elements to be added though :D maybe I could add the one underneath aswell but the shoulder strap is going to be important.

xvampire, Thats not my demon, it is crazyfools :P also, one crit on your side profile. His neck seems a bit too large in the back. Even though he is a concept(ish) figure, I don't think he needs that much muscle on his neck. Or, it could be his nose, Maybe just a bit larger, or just separated a bit more from the upper lip, I dunno how that would look cuz I'm no organic modeler :P Also I think the ear should be a bit larger side to side, not front to back if that makes sense and give it the ridge that a human ear has. If its just a little thicker It will really make the side profile pop. Also, is that a robotic arm? :D Luke skywalker ftw :P
Ravenslayer...thats sick bro, mood & colors...really cool!!!
crazyfool, ...Nice demon man, I personally like the details in the horns / helmet.... my only crit will be that I feel the head a bit stiff, (yeah I know is a massive demon ...) but I feel that the face is stacked to the body really tight, maybe give him some neck mass / length?
GCMP ... I like the light in the face, really nice portrait, it may feel a little bit overexposed, but I personally like how it blends with skin tones, gives it a touch of realism...I guess
xvampire: thats a good start! , are you thinking to make it a biped character? might be cool to do a centaur body sort of... I also like the fact that the armour just covers the arms and leaves the chest uncovered
here is another small piece of the character I am working on before lunch...

Thats a great shock, Looks sick and its really nicely detailed! I also agree with Maze though, The head isn't very far off of the neck, and his horns will get in the way when he tries to turn his head. It might be a good idea to follow maze's advice if you wanna get it into Lord of the Rings, because if you remember in the movies, the orcs use their head movements as a huge part of their emotions and they like to move them around and it wouldn't seem right if his head wasn't contorted in some odd way haha

looks awesome, love it. I'd just tone down the scratches on the helmet a bit, because right now (might change with a colour map) the helmet and horns are blending in a bit on the overall appearance.
