@ sltrOlsson-- I like the form actually.. and the poly count seems spot on. one thing I will say is that you seem to be using one smoothing group and some of the faces that should be noticeably on different light planes should be separated. another thing.. I dont think it would be necessary to have the holes in the chamber for your low poly.. I think your normals will take care of that easily.. and have to think.. besides attention to detail or presentation.. in a game, how often will we see the actual holes in the chamber up close?... I think you could kill those.. just my opinion tho.. still solid work.. keep it up!

I guess by smoothing groups you mean the hard and soft edges? I have them like that so that the normal bake will work properly. I get a lot of waving and stuff otherwise. On everything but on the barrel the hard edges are just for "looks" so i can see what's what.. I may be right about the holes! Maybe should but some bullets their instead! Thx for the feedback! :)

You don't need nearly that many cuts for the glass (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/448525/keep/Polycount/glasses.png). That aside though, it looks nice. Have you considered throwing it into the team fortress thread?

@StrOllson
Naw you're fine. In fact, I'd add a few more tris to the front of the barrel, where it looks like boolean shapes. Are you not forgetting the long thin (matchstick sized) ting near the cylinder/chambers? Also there seems to be a selector of some kind on the ref.

I am currently working on an indie project with some of my friends entitled "ECHO" Here's a sneak peak on the environment we are working on for the trailer. Once we have the trailer finished I hope to make an official thread on PC to show our work and explain more of the game. If you are interested in hearing more, check out the links in my signature.

This is without props or any other effects, which we will be adding later. The lighting is also just for promotional and test purposes.

@ man_o_mule I guess it's the mipmaping that kicks in when you move away. Don't know how to change it though. It looks a bit to clean and uniform, maybe try to blend some materials on the brick texture? Maybe try out that vertex blending technic?

@Snader Forgot to mention that this is a WIP (: It's like 15% lowpoly stuff left and 10% HP left (: Theirs not even a trigger on this one :)

well i think the 1P view is pretty weak, the sights look awfully primitive and the hammer is kind of boring and small. personally i think the slide grooves are too big and deep :O

also im a little confused, you've modeled the chamber and the ejection port, but the slide isn't back... those details should be above the mag, but they are above the trigger group? the slide is right as far as i can tell. anyway idk it is a wip

Kimono

Solid modelling Raider, a few jumbled thoughts:

-The hammer looks incredibly weak right now. It's pretty thin and generally under-scaled.
-The edges around the grip area generally look too sharp. Main offender is just behind the trigger, looks almost as if there's no bevel there.
-Some rather obvious pinching on the metal base of the grip, I'm guessing that's simply a lack of geo.
- The rear of the gun is looking rather bland and box shaped. This could be a problem with the concept you're following (if there is one) but I'd say it needs something more there. I wouldn't advise following it 1:1 but this image perfectly illustrates my point:

try not to fall into the trap of thinking modern guns are "boxy" or easy to model, here's some ideas...

Pistols are all about back-end detail as kimono pointed out. You'll never find something that looks mechanically the same as what you have there - the hammer couldn't operate and seeing pistols modelled like that looks rushed or ill-thought out

Give yourself some chunky details not only for visual interest but more believability. Even to someone with zero firearms knowledge a more visible mechanism will seem more plausible.

Also your slide grooves are enormous and way too deep - theyre usually machined on relatively lightly to interfere as little as possible - remember their only function is to provide grip

The rear sights would in reality be really thin the way you've modelled them and probably be dinged up real easy, usually for pistols they just have plastic molded sights, quite thick for durability. Shrouded sights like that are usually only for adjustable ones, but even still, chunky plastic adjustable sights are not unheard of, so you could go that angle for some extra detail if you wanted it.

The left side looks totally bland, most every pistol puts safety, ejection and slide release levers there for easy thumb access.

I know this paintover is looking a bit MK23, but the shape of your slide kind of dictates that. The only way to make it look less MK23ish would be to simplify it grossly (as you have) or overcomplicate it (which in the case of a concept weapon isn't always a bad thing

made some shaaaaades!

Aside from being way too high poly with too many cuts, you really do have some issues with unwrapping and filling texture space. Remember you can use 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8 etc etc sizes for textures. In this case wouldn't a rectangle texture make more sense? Also, you could mirror the glasses right down the middle and nobody would ever know. The general rule with unwrapping is you are trying to use as much space as possible on the texture without having too much blank unused waste. Sometimes its just not possible to fill it all, but take another look at yours.

Ged, Izmojuki Industrial Divinities, by Junji Okubo, lots of great designs in it.
http://www.izmojuki.com/

The book is one of my treasures, I wish I had him sign it when he came to the office once. The designs in it are so far removed from the relatively tame game work he does now, this is probably to do with less creative freedom in Japanese companies.

(below quoted from http://www.gearsonline.net/designers/ )

Okubo Junji
Credits: Gundam: For the Barrel, Steel Battalion (video game), Appleseed: Ex Machina, Infinite Line (video game)

A relatively new mecha designer that has approached the task with an almost revolutionary zeal. Starting out on the brilliant Gundam re-make "For The Barrel" he later worked on numerous games such as Capcom’s "Steel Battalion". His designs are forcibly realistic and have a unique aesthetic when compared to other more contemporary designers. He’s also one of the first designers to identify elements of "keren" in Japanese mecha design. Recently he worked on the new Appleseed few, Ex Machina, designing many of the weapons and on the upcoming Nintendo DS game, Infinite Line, creating the numerous spaceship designs.

Famous Designs: Gunboy Wilbur (For The Barrel), Decider (Steel Battalion)

great work!... i like the untextured version more...can you please share the technic for making such beautiful bark?

thanks man, yea it was super easy and super quick,

- I made a nice tileable bark texture and then edited it into a bump map (keeping a full colour diffuse also).
- Next I made a simple tube (must have smooth/even topology like any other base mesh for sculpting) in Maya and Uv'd it.
- In zbrush I subdivided the tube til I had enough resolution and then applied the bump map style texture, masking>mask by intensity (masks by the rgb intensity),
- and then turn the texture off (should show the mask in place) and then deformation>inflate until it looks good.

hope it helps :D

excluding the head, he's around 11,000 tris with a 2048 map (head and guns will be on seperate textures). everything is still WIP, and i'm currently finishing up his weapons then i'm gonna come back and go over all the texture work and shading/lighting for the final stuff :poly122:

@ catstyel-- wicked work man on the minotaur and the gunslinger. I think the leather on the belt works great and the folds in the jeans look and shirt feel natural.. on the other hand, what time period is he from?.. He looks a bit like something more modern than something out of a wild west film. I donno what you're going for here, but possible suggestions could be a pancho, cowboy hat, boots w/ stirrups.. anways.. technically.. it's beautiful man.. keep it up!

Edit: oop.. shoulda read further about the Clint Eastwood hat, and shoulda noticed the boots.. my bad.. great stuff dude..

Here is one of my final pics for my sword, I believe I'm calling finished. Crits and Suggestions still appreciated.. and you can see the other pics in my Frostmourne thread..

i'll probably do yakul as well, not sure yet, fur is just a pain in the ass to render, but i'm not gonna make his straw cloak/hood, otherwise i'd have to model the rest of the outfit differently and i liked the version when he was in the ironsmelter helping the ladies on the bellows

Neox: Looking great so far. I notice you came back and blurred it in that one spot. Heh.

JMiles: I really like how that sword turned out! What did you render that in? My only crit really is with the presentation. I think it looks a little random currently, it would be better if you worked out some sort of order imo. Anyways, great work.

Jmiles, I would honestly. The yellow really ruins the mood of Frostmourne, where as a blue light gives it the "cold" feeling it has in the game. Possible a little bit of blue glow in post too?

jmiles
05-13-2010, 11:31 AM
@ BradMyers82-- Thank you sir! The presentation in this pic is a bit random, I admit, but I wanted to show the sword at extreme angles, where I thought the light hit it the best so you can see some of the major details, especially in the hilt. And my shots are actually real time screen grabs w/ the textured/colored background doctored in PS.

@ Medestruit-- I understand what ya say about the yellow light and the mood. It comes from my original rim lighting setup. The Key light is the blue color you see of the middle image, but I found that the extreme of the yellow light of the backside created a great opposite contrast to the front, and because of that, the blue light became a great under tone light when presented on the yellow side. It also brought out a lot of great colors in the metal, as well as the leather, imo... I do however, have the sword presented on the blue side for my layout sheet in my thread. I wanted a balance of both and tired not to limit myself to one side of the sword because there are details that are asymmetrical to the front. And yeah, there is a slight blue glow around the sword pics, as a means to pop them out.. tried to make them subtle enough not to take away from the sword itself. Thanks for the crits!

gauss: this is soooo cool!! maybe a bit more contrast but thats all I would find to crit

catstyle:

very very nice man

imo the folds on the pants go a bit over board , too sharp and imo also a bit too much for an jeans like material.. the shirt-front on the other hand looks fantastic, the back also is a bit too sharp folded.

love the head too

catstyle - while this bald dude is looking mighty fine, u might want to consider ur detail spread. what is important, where should the detail go, and how to keep it consistent through-out the model.

otherwise all i can say is add some bump-wear into the shirt (its too silky smooth!) and look into his neck being too high, might be the view angle.

hey guys, it's pretty rare that I get to post something I did at work, but we just released a little flash game to help advertise for the upcoming prince of persia game.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/aeson/300x250.jpg

I was responsible for some of the art/animation and overall design, although design wise ubisoft was far more in control of the final result then I was. We were trying to target a pretty young age group, hence the lack of difficulty. (I wanted to make it a lot harder and more complex, but blahblahblah)

Play it here:

shotgun - thanks for the advice, will definitely consider the detail spread once all the chips are down, i think the main problem atm is that a couple of his main focal points aren't in there yet, which I'm hoping will be his guns and his finished head. good call on the shirt being too plain, will try roughen that up

I think you should make some adjustments to your topology, I'm not an expert when it comes to this, but this looks like you'd have trouble animating, it doesn't have enough polygons on the knees and elbows to support a bend, for example.

this is the first basic tileset of my newest personal project. it's basically a modular system of road tiles (so far) which will allow me to build up a city fairly quickly. :poly142:

it is rather low poly (694 unique tris, but 122 when instanced) as my aim would be to get this running on devices like iPad or similar spec. I also aim for a rather clean simplistic look.

Atm I am still working on the textures for this set, but I thought I'd share what I got done today.

will do another 2-3 basic tilesets with different base style (so I can make different zones - eg. commercial, residential areas etc.) once that's done I will start making buildings

let me know what you think

Looks good, but if you want to use it on a portable device like iphone/ipad you shouldnt care much about instancing geometry. Your better off making it a single mesh/material for less draw calls. Also do you really need that much geometric detail? Where is the camera going to be? maybe you should just bake the entire block down to a single plane, maybe a plane with a bevel at the sidewalks.

If its for something like a GTA game where the camera is only about 100 feet above the ground and always facing mostly down then what you have should work great.

HATERS CAN HATE BUT DARDICK 4 LYFE

I really liked finishing up the AK high poly, and before launching into the whole process of the full bake I thought I might just relax on Sunday afternoon with a little more sub-d, cement the new skills into place. Well, my complete inability to budget or estimate time meant that "the afternoon" became "all night."

but now at 5am i have another completed weapon in high poly. so there.

The Dardick 1500 pistol is a really odd duck. (Read up about (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dardick_tround) it's special triangular shaped trounds, twenty round revolver that cycled from an internal magazine and fed from clips. What?). It's an engineer's delight, and the market proved it a gunhaver's general horror, all wrapped up in looks only a mother could love. These days it's the essence of a rare collector's item/esoteric ammo collector's honeypot.

Anyway I think I might wait to tackle the AK and just bake the Dardick first, since it's much simpler.

Harry: You've got some normal errors, and I'm curious whether the backside of the grip is meant to curve inwards in the middle? It seemed strange to me, but might actually be correct, I can't be sure.
Also, it looks like you have to turn some edges, look at the specular highlight on the safety (I think? The thing on the back, up top?)

It just looks like that cause of the envmap i carelessly slapped on. Some of the errors are probably aggravated by that too... But I know there are a couple. Im not sure what you mean about the safety, but the thing IRL is a pretty bizarre shape,
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2533/3888715693_6166b7f992.jpg

Harry his comment on the safety actually referred to the hammer - in your rear view you can see your spec highlight is at a slant instead of going straight across, just means you need to turn some edges in the low poly to get that working correctly.

hey Harry, thats a pretty nice bake. Im not really familiar with that pistol so I cant really give accuracy feedback, but it looks convincing enough to me.

as for this thing, I am done with it. I want to move onto something else already and quick. Going to look for mod work so if any1 is looking for an artist and thinks I would be a good fit then give me a shout. For the AK I just shortened the barrel a bit and put the fire selector down. I also know some people don't really dig dark models on black backgrounds but personally I really like it, especially with this piece. Thats just my preference

Edit: Link fail. Thanks for the headsup Gauss. I'm a drop-box noob, thought I just could link it :poly136:

EricV: looking great. I disagree entirely about Kewop's comment about "random color", one of my biggest complaints about gun modelers is that they fail to capture the wide range of hues you find in a good metal finish on guns. Lots of deep, rich tones--purples, blues and on. Really an impressive piece and I agree with your personal preferences in presenting it, but couldn't we see it in other lighting environments too? :)

Unleashed: I really like what I see so far, keep it up. Face has a lot of character. Skinnier anatomy on women is tricky. In life drawing I found that all women have curves, it's just that on the skinny chicks the curves are way, way harder to capture. You look on track to do a good female model with low body fat.

bejkon: link doesn't work for me, 403 :\

As for me just a little more work tonight, built the carbine adapter for the Dardick. Just further cements it as a unique weapon. This was harder since I could find all of two reference images for it that were not all that detailed.

working on a Dragonborn for the folio mostly wanted to mess with the anatomy of the character, because as they are commonly depicted now they dont look like they are descended from something that could fly...nerdwank... anyways in the interest of not giving tmi here ill start a thread in a bit for wips.

the sculpt is super rough now and im going to retop it before i refine anything so please keep this in mind:)

unleashed: looking pretty good, but take another look at the hands please the thumb placement looks painful.

Nice job unleashed. Though you should watch the boobs, they look like they could be latexed onto a flat chest right now.

EricV - That looks pretty sick man, nice clean work.

It's a couple pages back now already (wow!), but...

rollin: Thanks for the crit man! You're definitely right, I need to do something better with that foreground pipe and supports. Some parts of the mech could use more definition too, I think, and more linking between the colors of the env and the mech.

DKK, Jason, Szark, paulsvoboda - thanks dudes :)

i knew some jerk would spot it. And i kind of suspected it'd be you if anyone :D

yeah.... i forgot to separate the islands, i'm a retard. dunno how much i can be bothered to go back and fix it now. I might see if i can detach and just scale it down rather than move it, maybe then i wont need to rebake AO

=D

Yeah these things are killer to me, some may say you wont spot them, but they break the HP feel and cause aliasing(as you can see in the shot) that no amount of diffuse work will fix. Anyway, looks great otherwise man. Next time force on AA in your video drivers, i probably wont catch it then!

New developments on Spectrum with Pior's character. She changes colour based on what light you're standing on (even though she isn't on any light atm). It's much more consistent now than it was. All dynamic, in game.

(Hope you like what I've done Pior!)

hey Harry, thats a pretty nice bake.

Great work man, the gun looks awesome!

Would you mind posting you textures? I'm in the midst of a gun, just about to start textuing, and would love to get some ideas from your work. :)
