super did you bend the body as one? it kinda looks like the ribcage is also bent, but it should stay as one mass, not sure tho maybe a view from the side would help

Awesome jesse :)
What's that little chain for though? i can't figure it out, heh.
Creating a character for a company and I've started fleshing out the concept:
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/4403/tgchero.jpg (http://img682.imageshack.us/i/tgchero.jpg/)
I know, not very interesting so far but gonna push it and make it a lot more asymmetric.
The character is to be like the uncharted / just cause antagonist, you know the kind of guy
edit:
I am aware he is missing a head. I am considering adding one if deemed necessary.

jmiles, pretty impresssive work, how much of this is pure sculpting and how mach is premodelled?
ok here is my next step
http://www.polyphobia.de/public/pictures/3d/speedies/sculpts/chriss_04.jpg
scaled the head down to 93%
fixed some of the proportions like
-less round head
-arms a bit more chunky to support the wide legs better
- tweaked the hands
blocked the hair very rough

so if you added crosshatching to just the shadow texture then you would only see the crosshatching where there are shadows on the model? If so this is something i've been thinking of doing for ages.
jmiles
04-21-2010, 05:40 PM
@ Neox-- thanks man. about 75% of the model were primitives made in Max. I tend to try to stay away from any legit hard surface modeling in Zbrush because I have more control over it this way. The Skulls and horns were all Zbrush though, made from Z Spheres.

jmiles: how would someone hold that sword without puncturing their palm? I just thought that mind be something worth considering as plainer leather there would be less painful to hold and give the eyes rest between the hilt detail and the blade.

@ Kevin Johnstone-- I understand and agree w/ you on the ergonomics.. the handle detail was derived straight from the concept drawing. I thought it was a pretty cool addition to the over all design, so i had to add it.. granted, in real life, it would never be comfortable.. but if you look at Arthas in the WotLK cinematic, he wears thicker than normal leather gloves anyways... and he's undead.. so it could work, i think... although leather wraps for the handle would be a good idea too. thanks for the tip

not in the shadow, but in the darker shades
buz you could do this also by multiplying a tileable hatch structure,. either by screenspace mapping or just tiling it over your uvs
@aesir: i agree, to the upper eyelid, not gonna model the lower eyelashes, first of all they don't have the same volume in chris' designs, they also don't have the same volume in reality, and if it would , it imho looks strange. So i will keep that to the texture :)

Yeah, pretty much.
I'm sure there'd be cheaper ways to do crosshatching, though. A small crosshatched bit of texture that tiles closely, then just multiply it on top. Perhaps create a mask or something to prevent it cropping up everywhere.
Edit; Ahah, Neox beat me to it :)
i did this once in unreal for airborn, but as i cannot touch either the shadows them self (i can only map the darker values, screen or model dependent) or load custom mipmaps into Unreal without extra code it was not a real option, would have loved to have that working
Neox that's really cool, love the style :)

Neox: I'm very curious on how you did that hair block in. Is it just done with regular planes and tweaked to liking? are they done in zbrush? Mind that I am learning how to 3d modeling, and hair is giving me quite a bit of trouble. Thanks for any input.

It's a good start. But right now as it stands, your rendering is killing your model. The hair has no shadows, the skin doesn't have enough thickness (sss too strong) and the detail from your zbrushings to your rendered have been mostly lost. Micro details that is.
Thanks for pointing that out dur23. I have realised that hair in max is a bit tricky, because I totally missed the lighting bit and shadows. Anyways, I decided to shelve the cigar guy, and have been testing out a new character this time around the lights and shadows seem to work.

thanks guys, tweaked a bit further, now i think i can start working on a retopoed mesh, think about a pose and well if i dress her up or not :D
and if i even retopo her or not, not sure ^^
- changed the arms thickness in the sideview, but still might need a bit less thickness
- changed the eyelashes to be wider and thicker
- added a bit more polypaint
- worked on the hair further
- changed the matcaps of skin and hair / need to tweak the colour and specular for the hair matcap, but damn i love matcaps/litspheres for fast previews
- worked a bit on her hips/thighs more
basicly just tiny subtle stuff but i hope it works better :)

I really love the character Neox! I normaly like your style alot, so combining it with Chris's sketches can only improve it!
I was wondering about the feet tho, why did you decide to model them in this pose? Wouldn't this be a hell to rig (if you were planning on rigging her at all) and isn't it just harder to sculpt?
I mean they do look cute, don't get me wrong. Just wondering why you picked this particular pose.
gavku
04-23-2010, 03:54 AM
Neox she's looking great man!
MeintevdS: because almost all designs and sketched had the feet like that i'm not sure if i'Äm going to really rig her or just pose her for a rendering, but basicly creating a relaxed foot out of this will in the end be just vertexpushing, so its very doable to relax them for a game/movie ready character. I just wanted to catch Chris' flow in 3d and that includes 4 toes and 5fingers and also having her standing on the tips of her toes :)

I'd make the crotch more blocky, it's too wide, or it's the shading or something there that doesn't make it feel a 100%.

Man....it's been ages since I've posted anything. I've continued by dive into the well of Casual Gaming...In short, I spent the last 6 months working on a Facebook game, Social City. I did the style and direction with Todd Pickens. I also developed the technical pipeline, modeled about half the assets, and did almost all the little animations. That took about 6 months to get launched and has been out for about six weeks. The game has done very well since it launched right before GDC, currently over 13,000,000 Monthly Active Users and 3,200,000 Daily Active Users. Old ladies love to buy buildings. It was fun being at GDC this year since there were banners and crap all over that I could point out to people and be like I worked on that. :)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25748/sc_1680.jpg
Most of the animation was fun and really simple, like this kind of stuff:
http://timaste.com/media/boop_co.html
Other than that, I'm back on a new project (also casual) where I am just starting to lock down the rendering and color guides for the team. I'm not done yet, I forgot the color brown. Anyway, more to do.
Will look something like this:

Haha, I started working on the same thing last week. I was confused when I first saw yours. I thought, "I never posted on here before!" I'm excited to see how my work matches up to a pro's :) So far I've got these bits done. I'm quite happy, as I did the front blade-thing bit in a couple hours, which is good compared to how long it would have taken me before. I'm definately speeding up :)

@RawTalent:
Your textures are taken directly from photoreferences (bad), and are misaligned to the geometry in many areas (worse)
Major problem area's are:
- The juncture between the neck and head
- The cuff of the pants
- The shoes
And to a lesser extent the ears, and the mouth.
Using photoreference isn't bad, but when you just paste it over area's of the model it really gives it the look of being slapdashed on there. Take some time to investigate what skin looks, what the colors are, and where it's shadowed. Check out any page in this thread to find examples, or run a google search for skin painting/texturing tutorials, and checkout this: http://www.furiae.com/popup.php?text=skintutorial
That split between the neck and the head is terribly obvious. Don't do that. That should be one connected piece, with a consistent matching texture between them.
Ben Mathis has a bunch of excellent tutorials on modeling, and proper edge looping. Check out some of them here:
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.php
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/tutorial/tutorial.htm
Pay attention to your anatomy. You've got the basics, but your placement is off in alot of areas some in little ways like the face and shoes, and some in larger ways, like the length of your guy's thighs, and the bend in his arm.
Hope this helps; you know the process for modeling, now you just gotta improve your artistic level!

Ajax - that looks fantastic! Really well realised and the animations are so charming! I've avoided those casual Facebook games like the plague, but I might have to give this one a go.

Thanks guys! I make no claims as to how fun the game is, it's pretty much your standard by the numbers FB Farming Game with a few twists. We were targeted the 20-40 year old female soooo... ;)
I appreciate the kind words! Todd P. and I definitely wanted to try to push the boundaries of Flash games a bit with this with the hopes that we can start raising the bar on production values for Facebook games. With any luck after a few more games we'll start breaking the mold on the "farm clone" gameplay too into stuff a bit more interesting.
@ Ruz: Just standard scan-line render out of 3DS Max. Mostly a combination of tweaking a direct light, a skylight, and fun materials. It was a blast to work on because we don't have to unwrap or texture anything, it's all material & color based. Models were high-poly because we are lazy and do a lot edge-loop modeling to make it go fast.

Mucking about with bobo's brunt sdk made me want to try some old school painted stuff, so i started doodling out a few thumbnails for a cast of sci fi characters with the idea of maybe painting up one. Background is they are part of a mining crew on a giant krupp style platform, which forms a sort of moving township as well.
Was trying out a new workflow for these, which is starting with a sphere, squashing that into shape and remeshing to generate even topology, i love the results, very intuitive to work with and very fast to block out a character. Can even match concept art pretty well with the imageplane function. The miner was doodled out as a messy thumbnail first & the kill frame was just made up on the fly, both are quite awkward in areas, unfinished limbs and need polishing and proper topo+ additions but a fun little experiment. Might try old dom war thumbnails next.
The miner has kind of wonky human proportions but i've rationalised - contracted miners have limbs removed and replaced with interfaces so they can interact with complex mining machinery, hard suits, diggers etc, get plasticky human style prosthetics when they're off duty.

Started this some time last week, it's been quite a challenge so far. Haven't modeled a gun or a guitar before either (so of course I had to combine the two, uaghh hahaha). I'm finishing up the UV layout tonight and starting on the high poly version as well. I'll add in the pickups and frets and other details when I bake the normals (Thought I'd save some geometry). It should go well with the last character I finished.

Namely a large screw and the magazine release, but I doubt these details would ever be seen from a game perspective.

Good UVs, one thing I'd change is on the pistol grip, instead of keeping the front separated from the sides, I'd weld the edges together and deal with stretching rather than seems.

Hands usually have a small arc from the thumb to the pinky. If you pull down the pinky and index finger "bones" you could reduce the flatness of the hand. Also I feel the pinky is a bit too long. ^^

rawtalent: you really should work on presentation. Your first image consisted of a pixelated mess, failing absolutely at showing off the wires. The ones after that were blurry and unlit on a black background, and the latest one is a red blob spinning way too fast on a white background.

@ Blendrehead - Check this out: http://www.antropus.com/images/mao2_36.gif You can model in the details on your low poly mesh. This will also help break up the muscle groups to make your hands look less flat :)

ocarian and crazyfool, love the proportions and style.
blenderhead - i think you are missing the curvature along the roots of the fingers, might also be worth stepping back from quads and focussing on the main planes of the hand before making things neat and square? its hard to concentrate on form and make things quaddy at the same time
ocarian - very nice model
3d sketch of the mechanic girl from the thumbnail sheet, my little inner censorius concept guy thinks she'd probably be wearing more practical clothes for welding and grubbing about with engines. but maybe former exotic dancer turned mechanic? dunno but I clearly need to get out more...

Blenderhead:
Hands usually have a small arc from the thumb to the pinky. If you pull down the pinky and index finger "bones" you could reduce the flatness of the hand. Also I feel the pinky is a bit too long. ^^
Cheers Svein I will look into both those issues.
Loving that red demon turnaround.

Loving the styles from both Smo and Kite! There's some amazing work going on in this thread, I love coming here and seeing everyone's stuff, it's really inspiring.
Here's my first ever high poly environment piece... Rip it to shreds! I still have a lot more to add, but it's getting there. This is only a day's work so far.

This can survive another page, damnit thats cool.
What happens if you close up here pants and vest a bit more, less belly.
And give them boobs some freedom, less pressure from above and pull them up just a bit.
bellybutton is crazy low btw, even if its style, just curious to see what more it can be :)

WORD. I think the boobs look a little wierd though, they're squeezed in a way that looks uncomfortable and unnatural. It even sort of detracts from the overall hotness IMHO. Or maybe they're just a little low on her torso, it could work if you just lifted the whole rack up a bit.
I'd still hit it either way, just for the record.

yeah the boobs to me look like someone sucked on the finger of a rubber glove, injected resin into the fingertip of the glove and let it set
i dunno why i thought of something that ridiculous. i should have just said they look like avocados

the geo is just weird, dont tesselate triangles like that.
People always link to the same old pics and diagrams of edgeloop flow for a reason, it actually will make your life a lot easier and your mesh a lot cleaner and easier to optimise if you model with established techniques

Kite, that model is pretty damn sick. I will say I used to know guy who was a welder and even with wearing heavy-ass shirts, his arms were fucking beet red and jacked-up from the intense heat of the torch. She would be burnt as hell.
bbob - Maybe a parody of stitch who's been heavily featured on the futuristic version of to catch a predator?
larolaro - awesome work as usual rob, still haven't put a site together, i did snag andynisbet.com with the idea of just doing a blog or something, haven't figured out how to set it up yet.
conte, cheers conte no just a base mesh, not really liking the sphere> remesh for people, they're too subtle. It's better for more exploratory designs i reckon
fearian - there's a stab at a paintover, http://www.adventuresincommuting.com/doodle.jpg not that great. I think the best idea if its your first character is to grab lots of photo reference and just flat out trace them in the viewport until the shapes and volumes start sticking in your head, i found it helpful to model out every main element, ribcage, pectorals, etc then combine them
arrangemonk., looks real nice, is that sascha heinrichs procedural rock tutorial? been trying it too, it's really good.
felipefrango, cheers for the crit, i'll probably not do too much to them now, maybe tweak later but they're supposed to be fakey cakey + gravity
harry ' sucked on the finger of a rubber glove, injected resin into the fingertip of the glove and let it set '
This pretty much exactly describes what i was going for hahaha
Vitor - thanks i'll do some later, need to polish the sculpt, very rough and her eyes are set a bit weirdly in the head.
8ftspider- hmm, ok the welding mask is now a fashion accoutrement. or futuristic cold heat torch?
thanks for the feedback guys
Harry
04-28-2010, 11:23 AM
arrangemonk, the stone texture is quite nice, but I'd suggest gathering dirt and small plant live in concave areas of the geo, and probably try to do some thermal shedding erosion/cracking stuff

some progress on my current udk project :) the entire mesh is 1 piece except for his beard, and you can ignore the belt blockout i have in xray mode, its gonna be replaced soon
slowly but surely coming along, and obviously there are probably some problems. any tips would be greatly appreciated, but keep in mind i plan on finishing topology errors after i get him to a more complete state.
@rawtalent: why do you meshsmooth a obviously triangulated model?

It doesn't look better, are you really modelling those heads? it feels that you are using a base mesh head and you are simply deforming it.
You must know how to detris a model, just delete the Lines between the quads.

Rob, have you thought of doing some merch with your own illustrations? Not that it'll get you a living, or give you money RIGHT NOW, but if you've got nothing better to do, some shirts or stuff?
Heck if you were to just illustrate a (known, public domain, like Alice in wonderland or something) story I'd gladly buy a book.
It's a pity I'm flat broke too, or I would've commisioned a self-portrait.
