Working on some planet textures. The game engine is circa 2004, so we can't do anything fancy like EVE Online has done with their awesome planets. Clouds don't move, even. :( Lots of nasty DXT compression on the clouds, but it won't be facing the mission waypoint node in the final version, so it'll be better.
I actually made everything in this pic, including the starfields and Columbia.

Other than the UI, I made all of the content seen in the video, including particle fx.
And if anyone was interested in the process (click for large):

Great stuff, Fletcher. Wish you hadn't mirrored him straight down the front though, maybe moving the seam a bit off to the side instead so the very middle has some uniqueness going on.

Vassago, MaD, JFletcher, awesome!
Dado Almeida, Ravenslayer: Yeah, I tough that she looked similar with Kat when I was modeling, but it wasn't my direct intention. I think it's because they have similar features and style.

Had a lot of fun with the profile, now need to try and do the same on the front view ... And ears are too high still ...

I think that it would look better without normal map on the planet tbh. It would make sense, the planet would look generally flat unless its some really dramatic camera/sun angle like this one http://researchpark.arc.nasa.gov/lecture%20series/images/Earth.jpg
Other than that it looks cool.

Trying to oldschool model a female head.
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/8306/chickheadwip.jpg
So any tips on making this more feminine? and are the loops ok? some areas I wasn't really sure about, I have quite a few poles in there now. but then again, I don't know what i'll be using this for, maybe sculpt or maybe just leave it as is.
ps: i stole almighty_gir's foto reference to work on this :poly128:. (if it's not okay please tell me, but it looked like you got it from somewhere like 3d.sk or something)
pps: this is the first time I modeled such a high poly ear ;).

Hopefully if I can get past the normal map seam issues I'm currently faced with (I think plagued with would be a more fitting word since it's much less pleasant). I'm hoping to have this guy finished and hopefully rigged by the end of this week if I can work around those seam issues.
He currently weighs in at 5046 tris, I had him at 4999 at one point but he desperately needed more geometry in parts of his head/face, and a bit around his shoulders. I sort of set a budget for him, I didn't want him past 5000 tris originally but I'll settle for 46 extra tris. Oh, and the reference picture isn't going to be followed exactly, but the stitches will be in there for sure.
I assure you guys he won't look like Mickey Mouse when I'm done with him, hahaha. It's those damn ears. I really like them though, so I'd like to keep them there. Here's what I got so far.

moose: what's the projection painting program? :).
moose
04-12-2010, 01:44 PM
pior, katana, & pea : <3
Japhir: its super ancient, Painter3d (http://www.micro-wiz.com/painter3d.html), from MetaCreations. Its not projection like we know today, just straight up painting on the mesh. I used it as a way to view 3d models on my Mac, since i didnt have any 3d software, or the selection of 3d sofware for Mac os9 was very slim (and i couldnt figureout Lightwave). Its probably one of the most stable and easy to use ones - but has a few quirks and problems (such as not having projection painting, and odd ways of handling strokes across seams). They discontinued it when Corel bought MetaCreations :( I dont know if i still have the installer, even if i did OSx doesn't support Classic MacOS applications... so I'd have to break out my old G3 tower hahaha.
wow amazing video moose !
Re Painter3D : I have the PC installer somewhere, I can try to dig it out. The PC version seems nowhere near as good as the mac one tho - window size is limited to RAM, and the app (just like older painter6/7 releases) thinks you only have 256mb or something. The Painter patch/hack to go around that might work on it tho. Ill check it out...
Its funny to think that 3DSMax is catching up with that kind of workflow only ... this year hehe.
In terms of simplicity and ease of use I think Mudbox is the closest now (can do 3D paint, and export a flat screenshot to photoshop too)
Good times!

Keen! I am loving the progress on your game! I'm really looking forward to the final product.
I just wanted to throw an idea at you. What about implementing some sort of 3d grid. Kind of like so,
http://www.chromesphere.com/Tutorials/Other/Co-ordinates/xyz%20planes_full.png
but of course better looking - really faint lines or something.
I don't know, just a random idea that came to mind while playing your demo :D
Like I said though, great progress, looking forward to more!! :)

Pior: Hey, thanks! Nothing fancy really. I started by poking around with the silhouette until I felt like it was establishing not only proportions but a sense of perspective. Then I locked transparent pixels and filled it with a darkish medium tone and started blocking in volumes. Used a mostly-sharp round brush for that, and I tend to use lighter tones to rough out new surfaces and dark tones for refinement. Then at the end I switched to a low-opacity large soft brush for a little burn and dodge to reinforce the overall lighting. I like to drop a Smart Sharpen in the process of saving out the JPG too.
Scooby: Thanks man! I'll give it a shot when I next work on them.

@NickCarver: man, great image. Do you draw directly on the tablet? The lines (rhythm and values) are beautiful.
@katana: Good conversion. You definitively need to work on the contrast (increase) and play with the Smoothing Groups (normals) in the helmet glass. But I'm sure you already though about that.

Pior I really love your top heavy helmet designs, but I'm starting to agree with the sentiment that her head is perhaps a tad too small, its especially apparent with the helmet on. You could stand to scale it up a tad.

Oh your a goner thats right, its over for you.:poly127::)
Its actually a piece from Alien 3, I have the basic corridor made as well, I just havent thrown up here yet. Most would probably recognize the hall way with the huge pipes, unless your under 15 years old...maybe
Dont want to clog the thread with small updates...so heres a link to a couple. This piece is all done. I'll be moving on to the thinner vertical structures on each side of the door.

I went for a straight white/black theme for my portfoliosite with easy-to-use navigation on one page (jQuery for the win!)

Not an alien?...Ok:P Anyway, looks good though the face could use some real changes. Right now it looks like someone botoxed it loads/is tugging on her skin, pulling all the skin back. Design is pretty cool though:). Study some facial anatomy and give some mass and weight to the skin/muscles.

for the unreal 3 engine, is 3 1024 maps too many for one building? I have a 1024 map covering the entire building atm, but I need a interesting base the player can walk up to...
also: sitting at ~700 tris

"...3 1024 maps... sitting at ~700 tris"
As in a 1024x diffuse, normal, and spec? Either the building should be higher poly if you get close to it, or lower poly if this is as close as you get to it. I'm very confused by what you have there.
Eneyeseekay

So I knew little to nothing about "properly" mapping UV's, normal maps, high poly sculpting, spec maps, and all that fun stuff before starting this guy (I dunno, let's assume it's a guy). I learned a lot making this "guy", he was basically a model I used to learn all the stuff I mentioned.
One thing I reeeeaalllly need help with is lighting/rendering my scenes. What I have here is pretty bad so.... Yeah.. Any tips on presentation? I feel like I'm lacking the most in that area. Anything from people more experienced than me (which is probably 99% of the site's members I'm sure) would be a tremendous help.
He's still weighing in at 5046 tris. Not sure if that's good considering his shape. he looks good on many angles and when smoothed he stays relatively the same! So I think that's a good thing.

for the unreal 3 engine, is 3 1024 maps too many for one building? I have a 1024 map covering the entire building atm, but I need a interesting base the player can walk up to...
also: sitting at ~700 tris

It's a good start. But right now as it stands, your rendering is killing your model. The hair has no shadows, the skin doesn't have enough thickness (sss too strong) and the detail from your zbrushings to your rendered have been mostly lost. Micro details that is.

This is looking pretty dope, WOLFREIM. My only crit would be the that the silhouette of the lower legs look chunkier than the rest of the character. It breaks the flow a little.
Instead of reducing the chunk around the calves, I would personally amp up the thighs (as they look shapeless from the front) as well as the shoulders.
Like the lower legs, the chest has some nice volume. So it would make it pop a little more if you brought out those other areas a little.
But that's just my opinion ;)

hobodactyl: Great style, I like it! Two suggestions: change the scabbard to a hue further away from red so it stands out from the pants better (the red bands on the gloves can stay though), and put some edge highlighting on the edges of the... what are those called... the metal hand guard things that sit just outside the scabbard on the sword and stop the other guy's sword from sliding down your blade right into your fingers. Whatever that is, edge highlights would make it a lot easier to read. But yeah, cool stuff!
So, here's the final version of my mech set:

roBOT: Rolling your eyes is a pretty ungraceful way to respond to an entirely legitimate comment. The combination of trigger design, mag profile, and mag location/orientation all point to it being a grenade launcher. If you still want to stick with that design unchanged that's totally fine, it's your art, but at least act a little more pro about it.

Hi guys, I'm new to Polycount.
So for getting started I would like to share my current WIP, a personal project to sharpen my 3D skills.
So here goes..
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7528/wipgo.jpg
Done in 3ds Max 2010.
This one is a high-poly model, and not planning on transform it into low poly model.
In this project I more concentrate on modeling hard surface objects, as well as texturing workflow.
Well, modeling and unwrapping process is finished, now time to do textureing.
Hope you guys like it :)
_Revel
@holi: i started with a very rough basemesh, changed it on the fly when needed and expanded it also when needed, hands and feeds are the newest parts, thankfully zbrush now can reproject details even if you change the base, thats really awesome :D
@rumkugel: yep i agree, at least from the front, but also i'll make the arms a bit thicker to compensate the thicker legs, its just part of the design that chris' girls hav some chunky legs, and i really like that. I'll see if i can find some better ref from the front to change it, so thanks for the feedback :)

Awesome model, Talon! Though 3x 2048 textures seem kinda overkill since the shader you used doesn't even look like it needs that much detail. Maybe you can make them 1024 without losing any detail.
Edit: Also, I understand you might wanna keep it secret, but I'd love if you could share shader/render settings, or at least show us your texture sheets to see how much of the toon look is in the textures themselves.
if you look closely you can easily see what is shader and what is textured
everything that is pixelated and not antialiased is either shader (the cell areas) or an inverted pushed model (the outline)
and basicly this is what i think could be improved, why is everything so aliased?
instead of a shader that uses an If for the cell shading you could use a ramp to tranform the shading and make it therefore less pixelated. And even if its just for the presentation, i'd capture it twice the size and scale it down so the outline looks softer.
at least thats what i'm thinking :)

04-20-2010, 07:44 AM
@Neox: Yeah, there's a lot more I could do with the aliasing, but it's straight out of Max viewport so I'm a bit limited.
The slightly fudgy edges on the toon shading is from xNormal's rubbish basic AO bake which helps drive the shading - the machine I'm on at the moment doesn't have enough memory to do a high quality bake. When I have access to my own PC again, I'll do a real AO bake in modo, which will help it loads.
I also found that using a ramp that blended a little gave me really strange artifacts around the blend, something to do with the filtering of the ramp texture I think. I'm unsure whether it's just this PC, Max's texture handling or what. So I've had to turn off filtering in the toon ramp texture completely to get rid of the artifacts.
@conte: Thanks, dude :)
@felipefrango:
Yeah, it's not the most efficient of shader set-ups by a long way, it's mostly an experiment.
If it was in a game, 1024 would do nicely, just that the line detail gets fudged. And I'd use a proper post-screen outline shader, too, rather than the dodgy copy/invert/push/make black method I've got going on.
Also, I'm aware that the greyscale stuff I've got could easily be combined into one texture or into the alphas of other textures. I just haven't done so for ease of editing them :)
