Here's a wip from me.. Need some finishing touches on a couple of places and some minor changes..

Dado Almeida - Hey man, I just wanted to say (I don't know if people are commenting or not) but your drawings have been improving so much man, really enjoying seeing you progress, its very very noticeable and I just wanted to say awesome job man.
Dude, not really. Unless that traditional Internet advices, which rarely add something to our knowledge, very few people encouraged me ...Let's say I've learned to be a "self-motivated" artist. Sometimes it is not easy ... but it's something I really want to improve, so I keep pushing. Someday you receive some words of encouragement like yours ... Thanks a lot. Hope young artist understand that as an tip... ;-)
And now for something completely different:

Working on my last illustration (the Georgia one) I realized that I never drew Demons?! These are some inks from my sketchbook - colors and FX in computer.
One curiosity about this one is some of then are based in "clouds" shapes. Worth a while to try this way of concepting.

You'll find it unnecessary to paint that many tiles, but just to just hint at the more distant ones and give more detail to the ones that are closer, something akin to dof, in this case depth of detail....nice subtle palette though.

Hey Snipergen, lookin' stylish!
These guys seem to be entirely lacking cheekbones...And you're spending tons of tris on those ears when I get the feeling you could get away with way fewer there.
Something to keep in mind (that I got burned by just recently) is your eyelids should, ideally, have the same number of facets as the eyeballs beneath them, otherwise things can animate/clip poorly. Show us some shots from more angles or give us a .gif turnaround. Maybe set your mesh to 1 material pls, faceted shading for ease of critique?

Well have at it then...your stairs are reversed though...the 'widest' steps for this perspective would appear at the bottom...the closer to the horizon line, then the steps get thinner...beyond that, it's coming along nicely.

EricV: I took a look at ways to fix that anti aliasing and the best thing that I found was hardware rendering with some sampling...heres the result I got.
Rumkugel
03-22-2010, 12:29 AM
An AG36 looks different :/ and mounts differently than you modeled it.
The frontal Heatshield is taken off and replaced with the inbuild one of the AG36 Grenadelauncher.
The frame of the AG36 is also wrong. The pipe swings open to the left side and is merely solid on the right.
The Barrel of the Launcher isnt right either.. get more ref :)
Like this:
http://www.heckler-koch.de/media/Products/Special_purpose_weapons/ag36.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8a/HK_G36_with_AG36.jpg
Spec is too shiny on the launcher and the pipe should be lighter than the glassfibreframe.
The glassfibre material is very rough on a G36 hence it would be wise to lower the gloss and add some noise to the spec map.
You´re missing that the G36 has an ambidextrous fireselector ;)
Not really digging the scratches and that smily on the launcher, makes it look arcadish
But thats just me.

@zeraf:
oh nice! yeah there is definitely an improvement with the aliasing now.
The texture looks like you're off to a good start....I'm curious tho is the grenade launcher barrel made out of plastic or metal? With those deep 'x' cuts in it, it looks very plastic like...if it was metal I dont think you would be able to get those kind of cuts in it. I think the scratches would be more subtle and you would wear off more of the paint, so your spec would need to show that
and I have to agree with Rumkugel, Im not really digging the smily face, I feel it clashes with the rifle
zerafian
03-22-2010, 07:26 AM
I can agree with your guys crits. I think I just started disliking the bland look of the launcher with nothing on it so I started adding little things to it breaking up the look.
Im prettys sure Im gonna change the spec up though, I displayed it that way just cause I thought it looked cool. Once the full gun is done I wont have to rely on looking at just the launcher :).
Heres the reference for the gun Im going off of so you guys see where Im pulling the colors from.

Coming along, I think I'm going to try my hand at some trim/polish brushes to give him more of a stylized hard surface look
Also I definitely need to find a better toon material than framer04; everything comes off too dark, but it gives the closest result to the style I'm aiming for

Very nice, but I'd hate to see all that geometry go to waste :(
Check out this quick paintover for some minor improvements :)
http://www.decentdesign.nl/palm.jpg
1: Cut those faces in half and save 4 tris per leaf, 16 tris for the entire model and 96 tris in your scene, that would save enough tris to put an extra fern in there!
2: With the remaining geometry, try to shape it more like how the actual leafs would flow. This would also fix something about the specularity, because right now it looks a little flat.
Especially with relatively simple models like this it's important to get the most out of the tri count/shapes! Good luck :D

This 're the lines of the illustration based in the music "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"....I've tried to push the history further in the drawing, playing with that concept of Good, Evil, Tradition, Technology...every line has a meaning (at least, i've tried). : )
Hope you guys dig it.

@AIMBIZ: nice! it's an strange proportion - which make the char more funny than evil. But I don't know what your intentions ... I think the little legs demand a more cartoony face or, something more grotesque in other body parts too.
edited.: Hmmm. Just see your portifolio. Looks like is your style. I recall that Luthier char, lovely well done. Want my 2 cents for this one? Play with another version (other proportions) if this is a portifolio piece, I think you can put more variety showing other type of anatomy, stylization, etc.

Dado: Thanks alot for the feedback. You know, I haven't really given much thought about the main feel of this character. I guess I'm going towards the more humorous type, but still keeping him badass.
Good point about variety. Will have to try it out with longer legs. Perhaps it will benefit the armor design as well since the pieces will be further away thus making a stronger silhouette.

I bet you're just tossing them in for scale but remember that the curved sides at the top of a magazine are the feed lips, which the top-most rounds are going to be pressed against before being stripped/chambered. your mags have way too much space between the side of the mag and the rounds, it should look like this:

Hehe, nice to know. My fear of deadlines pretty innate tho :'P
Almost done with this puppy, but im having trouble deciding. I wanted to add some detail the the end of the bow, possibly break up the silhouette, so I added some rusted steel plating.
Im not sure if its taking too much attention away from the "grip" area tho, or make the design look noisy. Also, I kinda like the organic feel it has without.
What'yall think?
http://www.scumworks.com/otr/dmp/bow_collage2.jpg
aesir
03-25-2010, 01:12 PM
I assume the handle where the bow is held is in between the jaws. If that's the fact (and it should be because it's fucking impossible to not hold a bow in the middle when you draw it back) then you could think about adding a place to nock the arrows in. Most people don't balance an arrow on their fingers.
Detail ideas: jewles in the eyes of the skull. a string obviously. decorative beads wrapped around/hanging from it. A gnarly arrow.
I like it though.
Maybe it's just me, the bake looks nice but the fleshy bits lack that certain colour variation / contrast you see in zombieflesh and shrunken heads. It's pretty morbid, but if you look up a photos of shrunken heads you'll find that they are much more colourful, with contrasting wrinkles and almost scabby surfaces.
What I mean is that I'd like to see some mottling in the flesh diffuse using red-browns, maybe some pale green as well. But that is really just my taste and what would make my eyes happy.
{scumworks}
03-25-2010, 03:47 PM
Hey thanks for the feedback Aesir.
Your right, its held in the middle x'P. I get what you're saying about the "arrow holder", I dont think theres too much space between arrow and the characters hand ingame tho (oblivion), but I'll check it out.
Gems and string are comming, wasn't sure about doing details on the leather (wanted a crude build kinda look), but I probably should.
edit ::
@Vrav
Hmm maby the texture is misrepresenting. Its not suppose to be a shrunken head, but a skull.

Pixelchoat: Love your rednecks! Photosourced textures ya? I'd say the weakest part of all 3 are the feet/boots. The shoes all look inflated, and the 1 set of feet seem off (the longer 2nd toe, while it happens sometimes in reality, looks funky here). Also the shoulder straps of the overalls, and the suspenders read as pretty flat on both guys who've got em.

Mostly te chest/shoulder/upperarm part, i think. If I'm not mistaken women have more angled clavicles. A quick google gave this (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_a_male_and_female_c lavicle).
Also, the torso part is really small compared to the rest of the body parts (in all 3 axes).
There's also some other things that feel off, but i'm not exactly sure what. This image of skeletons (http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/5193/esqueletoslm9.jpg) might help.

Looks good Calix. Though it looks like you have double-layed sarratus anterior muscles along with the obliques. Creating 3 vertical sheaths. At least that's how it looks at this angle. Plus the shape of the ribcage, as a whole, seems under-defined. There are some other slight proportional issues, but on the whole it's a good sculpt.

did a lot of re-working the original model from the last post. Changed the lock plate and started to texture some parts. it has a cube map on it now so excuse the chromeness.

Adina took him from me and worked a bit further on the textures, i started setting up shaders, struggling with udk, should play around with lightmass next

Woog looking good, but it seems your losing a lot of detail in that shot with the dof stuff your doing.
looks great daniel, for a crit I would say the vertical pipes on the building on the right side could have a more interesting texture... maybe a grayish metal with some rust, get some interesting spec map action going? Unless that's a telephone pole, in which case... needs more wood

agree with this plus the shadows are a bit harsh woog especially considering theres alot of fur involved, those dark edges just make him look like a plaster mold.

woog - looks awesome bud :D but yea that Dof is killing it, tone it down so all your details are still showing :)
heres the low poly with wip textures and no spec, its about 7.8k tris with a 2048 map :)

Awesome! lovely bake, are you going to keep his texture quite clean? I think it looks better clean, dirtying it up might take away the awesome style you've got going.

this seems to be the consensus on ga as well ok well the submissions link still isnt up so when i get home ill turn the dof off, thanks for the crits, i defiantly needed a second opinion on it. thanks again!
ged: yea i kinda got the feel of it starting to look like a miniature from it as well. ill see what i can do to soften that up
undoz: Looks awesome! only crit would be that the area of the back just above the butt crack looks a bit odd at the moment, i think maybe it drops off too suddenly
yay texture ping pong: now back to Stephan

03-30-2010, 06:58 AM
Thanks guys, noted the butt crack :)
Neox: that's awesome!
The darkness is from the style I'm pushing towards. It's my take on Death from Sandman
ScoobyDoofus: Yes, it's zbrush. Put a real time shader, switch the rendering type to Best and play with the light direction, shadow length etc. It's very basic.

This page is on fire.
Daniel: The pole on the far right looks like a cardboard tube and the AC needs some grime or dirt or something, other than that it looks really good...definitely a place to take a fire team...
Neox: Outstanding as always...is this for Airborne?
3dLam: Pure win..I also didn't care for the gut shape as it appears to square at the bottom and doesn't match my own overhanging the belt...dang to much info...lol.
