I need to get some armor on the guys in the middle, and pose the guys on the outside. And make it all look better... especially the environment.

Made him a mech:
This is a smoothed version. It took about an hour to make.
No concept. Just out of my head.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj37/ngs616/majorsmech01.jpg
I'm going to do some more to it. I want to put a shield on the front.
ngs616
04-20-2010, 08:18 PM
I really need a shield on it. I want to put a control panel in the center. I also want to put some clasping arms and some other stuff coming off the sides.

Thanks for the link. I was actually able to get my hands on two of their DVD classes recently.
Being self taught; i really need to take advantage of all the videos and books ive obtained over the past two years. They could really improve the quality of my work.
I might check out DTs stuff on drawing. I should probably just watch the other stuff i already have though.
I really need to learn how to draw better; so i can make concepts of my models instead of diving right in.
It is fun pulling shit out of thin air, but i really need to plan things out.

I'm getting these onto the pc with a camera so sorry for the low quality. The coloring on the ones above is done on the pc.
I drew some of the stuff on this one last night, and some this morning and afternoon. I'm just randomly drawing this stuff. Not really thinking about it, just making lines and turning it into something.

My 3d has been lacking lately. I need to get back into it. I've been going back and looking at my old work and thinking about a lot of things.
I've also been doing this 2d work so i can draw my models before i make them. I can get a nice design down a lot easier then meshing it out with polygons.
This is some random sketching from the night before last:

I think it'd make it more natural like it'd appear in the real world, but it's not supposed to be on earth; so i can excuse the over-saturation... i think it contrasts the grass well.
I made these trees yesterday. Then i put together this UDK environment today. Total it's about 2 hours and 30 mins of work. I want to put in some rocks and various plants.

I've been designing some things for the next rehash of my game. It's going to be my best work.
Here is a random unrelated drawing. I drew it at night. Some time a week or so ago. Made a few random lines. It eventually turned into this. I took a picture of it a few days ago and colored it on the computer this night.

Is it normal mapping or bump on the "quick" objects? Your really need to work with the textures on them anyhow, it's better to really take time and i stuff properly most of the time. It's sure fun to do some quick things here and there, but do get stuck with it.
ngs616
05-30-2010, 07:51 AM
It's normal mapping. It's a little too intense on them. And the high frequency details in the normal map really need to be toned down. Not to mention bad lighting. And i wasn't eyeing anything actually, it was done without references or a drawn concept.
I was just doing those for a little practice. I got a bunch of stuff i'm designing that i'll be taking my time with and i'm going to post it in the pimping section to hopefully get some good crits.
My texturing does suck though. I started watching some videos on it recently though.
ngs616
05-30-2010, 09:31 AM
Heres the diffuse and normals, the normals are way too dark on some of them.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj37/ngs616/chest01_normal01.jpg
Some of the normals are way too dark. A quick adjustment i missed. Texturings still shoddy regardless.

I dislike that chest. It was my first shot at a chest. It's no excuse though. I should have looked at some picture of them.
I tweaked the bench and table a little.

gibson543
05-30-2010, 10:02 AM
I think your normalmap is kinda intense and making it look worse, can we see it without the normalmap
ngs616
05-30-2010, 03:33 PM
I am having trouble rendering normals. I shouldn't be rendering it anyway since its made to be going into a game engine.
Heres how the bench looks in UE3 which is what i had in mind while making the normals:
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj37/ngs616/benchandtable03.jpg
I don't know why they look the way they do in the render... I know part of it is because of the lighting though.
ngs616
05-30-2010, 03:51 PM
And here is all of them in UE3:

Well, the only thing you do is find a "wooden" texture, duplicate it around, paint out the seams and then smack a AO or a cavity on it, am i close?
I'm sorry, but you really need to sit down and think about what wood is really looking like.
May i suggest you take a object you have on your desk or something. Like, lets say you wallet. Really look at it, how does it react in different light situations? What color is it, how much depth is their in the leather, what does the the overall shape look like? And so on.
I think that really could help you, you need to understand how the things you are creating are working and what situations they could have "been true". Where does the dirt go, where does the scrapes go?
Hope it help some (:

well, the ground doesnt seem like bricks or stones. They look like cracked and dried dirt. Also the paper seems unreal. They look like little molded pieces of plastic. You've probably already noticed this though.
ngs616
05-31-2010, 02:23 PM
The ground is supposed to be stones. The paper i was thinking the same thing, it looks waxy.

06-03-2010, 03:54 PM
Hi NGS616!
I don't want to sound harsh but i think you should stop doing those 1-hour speed sculpts.
You just go to fast with all the things that you do! You should do 1-hour sculpts of like one body part at a time (next time do a sculpt a nose for example and take your time, don't rush it!)
And by the way, what's this medieval envioroment project you've been working on for so long? You should probably finish it or leave it alone and start doing something else other than knights.
I apologize for my english. I hope you understand it. You seem to be very productive, I am just saying that you should focus better on what you are doing.
By the way here is an interesting link to drawing noses:
http://www.stanprokopenko.com/blog/2009/06/draw-nose/
Hope I was helpful.
ngs616
06-03-2010, 08:44 PM
Thanks Dracula. I definitely agree with you. The 1 hour sculpts/models are mainly just things i was doing for fun with no definite direction. The medieval stuff i've just been rehashing and making random things.
I'll check out the link on drawing noses. I've always had a difficult time with them.
I'd go as far to say nothing in this thread is of adequate quality.
My biggest problem is i start making things without designing them or working from a reference. My second biggest problem is not spending enough time on the model. I rush through vital steps and get things done fast, but they lack in quality.
I have some stuff i've been designing that i'll be trying my best on. A few of the things will start showing up in here soon.
