I need to get some armor on the guys in the middle, and pose the guys on the outside. And make it all look better... especially the environment.

04-19-2010, 08:40 PM
Thank you! :)
04-20-2010, 01:27 PM
Put the leg armor on this guy.. I need to add in some details on this stuff.
04-20-2010, 08:09 PM
Made him a mech:
This is a smoothed version. It took about an hour to make.
No concept. Just out of my head.
I'm going to do some more to it. I want to put a shield on the front.
04-20-2010, 08:18 PM
I really need a shield on it. I want to put a control panel in the center. I also want to put some clasping arms and some other stuff coming off the sides.
04-21-2010, 01:56 AM
I recommend you watch some tutorials
here is a useful link: http://www.digitaltutors.com/09/index.php
04-21-2010, 06:27 AM
Thanks for the link. I was actually able to get my hands on two of their DVD classes recently.
Being self taught; i really need to take advantage of all the videos and books ive obtained over the past two years. They could really improve the quality of my work.
I might check out DTs stuff on drawing. I should probably just watch the other stuff i already have though.
I really need to learn how to draw better; so i can make concepts of my models instead of diving right in.
It is fun pulling shit out of thin air, but i really need to plan things out.
04-21-2010, 01:55 PM
Some random detailing (just for practice, the model will be different) on some of the armor suit in the mech in the last images:
04-22-2010, 02:00 PM
Got about an hour into Carl from ATHF. I just had to mesh him out real quick, I'm going to go back and put in the rest of the important proportions and shapes. Then the minor details.
04-22-2010, 05:25 PM
cool man lots of inspiration
04-22-2010, 05:54 PM
20 mins: no ref as usual
I want to scult it, then retopo.
04-23-2010, 03:48 AM
haha same for me usually no ref
04-23-2010, 02:27 PM
I did a drawing with a reference photo today! The photo is of an awesome crusader modeled by a polycounter; Matys (http://boards.polycount.net/member.php?u=18001).
I've only got about 30 mins in:
04-23-2010, 03:00 PM
+30 sloppy minutes more:
04-23-2010, 07:48 PM
Just some random drawing...
04-23-2010, 09:37 PM
A little coloring:
04-24-2010, 06:47 AM
love those creatures theyre so cool
04-25-2010, 01:56 PM
Thanks :) i like the purple one!
I'm getting these onto the pc with a camera so sorry for the low quality. The coloring on the ones above is done on the pc.
I drew some of the stuff on this one last night, and some this morning and afternoon. I'm just randomly drawing this stuff. Not really thinking about it, just making lines and turning it into something.
04-25-2010, 02:44 PM
04-25-2010, 10:14 PM
04-26-2010, 03:10 PM
I drew these today, in the the order they're displayed:
Just some random sketch. I drew some lines and turned it into something.
Some random weapons.
Some random practice.
And some more random practice.
04-26-2010, 03:30 PM
nice man. the glob dude looks like my aunt lol
04-28-2010, 03:56 PM
I drew these two the night before last, the one eye picture is way too blurry, i want to retake the picture and draw on it.
I made these trees real quick today and put them into Unity. They look like shit.
04-28-2010, 04:31 PM
nice these are cool
04-30-2010, 01:11 PM
My 3d has been lacking lately. I need to get back into it. I've been going back and looking at my old work and thinking about a lot of things.
I've also been doing this 2d work so i can draw my models before i make them. I can get a nice design down a lot easier then meshing it out with polygons.
This is some random sketching from the night before last:
Gathered some of my people up in one of my UE3 environments.

05-01-2010, 12:46 PM
if your aiming for smoke from a fire shouldnt the smoke be more gray like thishttp://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/photolib/misc/Black%20Smoke%20and%20Fire%20Rises.jpgnow it kinda looks like poison gas smoke
05-01-2010, 04:58 PM
No, marlfox! It's a tornado! :P It's actually dynamic. I have it spinning and everything!
I'll get an animated shot of it real soon
This is that same level, in a different area. I'm going to do another forest real soon.
05-01-2010, 11:10 PM
Started on another character; this is the base mesh with a few subdivisions:
I'm going to sculpt and retopo it.
05-02-2010, 05:45 AM
o oops :D sorry about that. i still think a more grayish color would be better:)
05-02-2010, 09:17 AM
I think it'd make it more natural like it'd appear in the real world, but it's not supposed to be on earth; so i can excuse the over-saturation... i think it contrasts the grass well.
I made these trees yesterday. Then i put together this UDK environment today. Total it's about 2 hours and 30 mins of work. I want to put in some rocks and various plants.
05-03-2010, 12:29 PM
Here's a quick update on that character so far:
Helmets messy; it looks like theres some monster head in it, but thats actually part of the helmet. The eye holes currently look like eye sockets.
05-03-2010, 01:04 PM
nice his arms seem a bit thin though
05-03-2010, 01:39 PM
A little bit of base texturing, and i worked on the helm and sword some.
05-03-2010, 07:26 PM
a little further:
Edit: didn't notice you posted, marlfox, sorry; i do agree with that. i'll beef em up a little. Especially the hands.
05-05-2010, 01:37 PM
A quick castle layout with some polys:
05-05-2010, 02:31 PM
nice castle wish i could live there
05-06-2010, 09:20 PM
05-08-2010, 10:27 AM
I made this door this morning. It was just a little sculpting practice.
I modeled this building today. It needs some things worked on; especially the roof. I'm not using a concept or anything as usual, but i'm liking how it looks so far. I haven't done any urban stuff.
05-10-2010, 03:20 PM
I've been taking a little bit of a break lately. I'm going to start working on more stuff soon.
A brick material.
05-10-2010, 03:48 PM
haha the brick house looks like an asylum muahhahaha
05-10-2010, 03:49 PM
by the way how do you fish out the ideas for those sorta collage sheets?
05-12-2010, 08:16 PM
I just sort of draw lines and turn them into stuff :P. It's pretty random. Sorry i can't explain it better.
This is another character i started. Very similar to the last. I'm about an hour into it.
05-13-2010, 03:47 AM
looks like hes standing on the horse lol
05-13-2010, 12:16 PM
haha Yeah it does. i'm going to make a saddle and have him sitting on it. Right now he's just floating above it so i can work on him.
05-19-2010, 04:11 PM
05-19-2010, 06:13 PM
love the color and the models
05-19-2010, 08:11 PM
Thanks a lot! :D
Heres an update on the bottom creature:
05-20-2010, 03:35 AM
05-28-2010, 10:55 PM
I've been designing some things for the next rehash of my game. It's going to be my best work.
Here is a random unrelated drawing. I drew it at night. Some time a week or so ago. Made a few random lines. It eventually turned into this. I took a picture of it a few days ago and colored it on the computer this night.
05-29-2010, 09:32 AM
A 30 min speed model of a table and bench.
05-29-2010, 10:26 AM
20 min speed model of a flag.
05-29-2010, 04:09 PM
One hour on a chest. crummy.
05-29-2010, 07:51 PM
Changed the wood a little. That was the worst part about it.
05-29-2010, 08:31 PM
some quick coins:
05-29-2010, 09:12 PM
A paper. Going to write some stuff on it.
05-30-2010, 06:16 AM
Is it normal mapping or bump on the "quick" objects? Your really need to work with the textures on them anyhow, it's better to really take time and i stuff properly most of the time. It's sure fun to do some quick things here and there, but do get stuck with it.
05-30-2010, 07:51 AM
It's normal mapping. It's a little too intense on them. And the high frequency details in the normal map really need to be toned down. Not to mention bad lighting. And i wasn't eyeing anything actually, it was done without references or a drawn concept.
I was just doing those for a little practice. I got a bunch of stuff i'm designing that i'll be taking my time with and i'm going to post it in the pimping section to hopefully get some good crits.
My texturing does suck though. I started watching some videos on it recently though.
05-30-2010, 09:31 AM
Heres the diffuse and normals, the normals are way too dark on some of them.
Some of the normals are way too dark. A quick adjustment i missed. Texturings still shoddy regardless.
05-30-2010, 09:46 AM
Some tweaking on that chest:
05-30-2010, 09:52 AM
I dislike that chest. It was my first shot at a chest. It's no excuse though. I should have looked at some picture of them.
I tweaked the bench and table a little.
05-30-2010, 10:02 AM
I think your normalmap is kinda intense and making it look worse, can we see it without the normalmap
05-30-2010, 03:33 PM
I am having trouble rendering normals. I shouldn't be rendering it anyway since its made to be going into a game engine.
Heres how the bench looks in UE3 which is what i had in mind while making the normals:
I don't know why they look the way they do in the render... I know part of it is because of the lighting though.
05-30-2010, 03:51 PM
And here is all of them in UE3:
05-30-2010, 04:17 PM
Well, the only thing you do is find a "wooden" texture, duplicate it around, paint out the seams and then smack a AO or a cavity on it, am i close?
I'm sorry, but you really need to sit down and think about what wood is really looking like.
May i suggest you take a object you have on your desk or something. Like, lets say you wallet. Really look at it, how does it react in different light situations? What color is it, how much depth is their in the leather, what does the the overall shape look like? And so on.
I think that really could help you, you need to understand how the things you are creating are working and what situations they could have "been true". Where does the dirt go, where does the scrapes go?
Hope it help some (:
05-30-2010, 11:15 PM
I spent about an hour making some surroundings.
05-31-2010, 10:33 AM
I rearranged some things in the scene. Changed the bricks. and made a wall torch and barrel. Fire needs some work.
05-31-2010, 01:08 PM
well, the ground doesnt seem like bricks or stones. They look like cracked and dried dirt. Also the paper seems unreal. They look like little molded pieces of plastic. You've probably already noticed this though.
05-31-2010, 02:23 PM
The ground is supposed to be stones. The paper i was thinking the same thing, it looks waxy.
I made some weather effects for it.
05-31-2010, 02:32 PM
nice. rain gives a medievel look
05-31-2010, 06:37 PM
A little more:
I forgot to build the lighting for a few of the objects.
06-03-2010, 03:07 PM
1 hour sculpt:
Not sure how much time i spent on this guy:
06-03-2010, 03:54 PM
I don't want to sound harsh but i think you should stop doing those 1-hour speed sculpts.
You just go to fast with all the things that you do! You should do 1-hour sculpts of like one body part at a time (next time do a sculpt a nose for example and take your time, don't rush it!)
And by the way, what's this medieval envioroment project you've been working on for so long? You should probably finish it or leave it alone and start doing something else other than knights.
I apologize for my english. I hope you understand it. You seem to be very productive, I am just saying that you should focus better on what you are doing.
By the way here is an interesting link to drawing noses:
Hope I was helpful.
06-03-2010, 08:44 PM
Thanks Dracula. I definitely agree with you. The 1 hour sculpts/models are mainly just things i was doing for fun with no definite direction. The medieval stuff i've just been rehashing and making random things.
I'll check out the link on drawing noses. I've always had a difficult time with them.
I'd go as far to say nothing in this thread is of adequate quality.
My biggest problem is i start making things without designing them or working from a reference. My second biggest problem is not spending enough time on the model. I rush through vital steps and get things done fast, but they lack in quality.
I have some stuff i've been designing that i'll be trying my best on. A few of the things will start showing up in here soon.
06-04-2010, 10:14 PM
I made this axe earlier today. I'm only about 30 mins into it. Theirs some stuff i want to do to it.
06-06-2010, 05:26 PM
I decided i'd take a shot at a vehicle so i started modeling this motorcycle.
06-09-2010, 12:29 PM
Some updates on the last two.
06-12-2010, 05:49 PM
I made this tunnel today.
06-13-2010, 04:35 PM
Made another tunnel today.
06-20-2010, 05:56 PM
I've been working on some more dungeon stuff. This is a few of the base structural pieces.
06-21-2010, 02:35 AM
The normalmap on the stonefloor has alot of noise in it. Try to get a cleaner normal map and the scene will look much better!
06-21-2010, 11:46 AM
Thanks i definitely agree with you. That normal map does need to be cleaned up. If you could; when you repost my pictures, please post the link to the image instead, so it doesn't pop up twice on the page.
If you read this and edit the displayed image into a link i'd really appreciate it! :D
06-22-2010, 01:10 PM
I made this zombie today. He's far from finished.. It was just a little practice sculpting. I'm going to polygonal model a zombie soon though.
Last night i connected the previous dungeon areas:

dude your too caught up in medeivel stuff and enviroments. add some variety :)
08-12-2010, 10:06 PM
I know man.. I'm highly considering taking a break and making a 3d scene as a doom tribute.
08-17-2010, 02:55 PM
Need to work on the lower area some more:
08-18-2010, 06:37 AM
he kinda looks like his thighs are baggy pants make them a bit thinner
08-22-2010, 09:02 AM
I only worked on about from the waste up. I hadn't gotten to them yet. Thank you though, i definitely agree with you on that.
08-23-2010, 04:50 PM
Another ugly beginning of fleshing out and conceptualizing an environment.... i still need to start drawing more.
08-26-2010, 03:13 PM
