Any car guys out there that can help me figure this out?

I have a 2008 nissan sentra. its just the base package. but the headrests in the back are super weird. ive tried researching it but i couldnt find anything. anybody ever have this experience?

the bars are bent 90 degrees so it juts out into the back of your skull. is this normal?

Check with your dealer too. Maybe it's a defect?
Otherwise if your passenger headrest is fine, I would swap them for now.

And maybe sign up to a Club forum too, usually they have a ton of resources for your car.

Yea, that's standard on the "we hate America" model.

I saw this I think on my sister's corola as well. I don't know how to fix it though sadly, sorry :(.

the headrest is supposed to be tilted towards you like that I think, it's design to bend in a collision and absorb energy, but if you feel weird about it, talk to the dealer about it and look at other sentras on the lot.

I know on the base model imprezas on my year the headrests also jutted into the back of the head like that... guys who were racing them said it was a pain in the ass cause their helmets wouldn't fit and they'd have a weird seating position. Luckily my car has the wrx seats with integrated headrests... so I don't have that problem... but strangely enough, my seats rate slightly lower in crash ratings for head injury.

Either way I don't think its very good for you ergonomics wise, unless a human head can actually bend that way.

I'd check the owner's forums and ask the folks there too.

If the seats can fold down to allow long cargo, then it's to put the headrest in a position so they can lay down flat. I'd crack open the manual.

just taking a look at my toyota and if you tilt your seat to be completely vertical.. it sorta has the same thing. if you just tilt your seat back a few degrees it fixes it. I think the design is to scoop the driver instead of be a L design seating style. You don't drive like one of those old grandmas with a straight vertical seat 2 inches from the steering wheel do you? Thats the problem. lol.

I just bought a used 2008 Nissan Sentra and had a heck of a time figuring out how to get the rear headrests to adjust upwards. It turns out that by pressing down on the top of the headrest, it flips up. It is spring-loaded and latches in the forward position to make more room when the back seats are folded forward! Try it.

Could it be for safety from rearends?

Yeah, I think it's intentional, for safety. It sounds as though they put the front seat headrests in though. If it's moving your head forward, then it's not correct. Typically, I think they've been angling them on the front seats, because people like to pimp the backs of their seats now. But that doesn't apply to the back seats.

If they are obnoxious, you can probably remove them. Obviously that removes all head safety support though.

This is what I found online for the base back seats though:
