View Full Version : Mudbox 2009 or zBrush 3.1 in an upcoming eat3d video
Hello everyone!
Im working on a new next-gen training DVD that is similar to the old pillar but more modular and much more in depth. I even plan to split it into 3 DVDs so I can focus on each part in much more depth.
The first part will be the high res modeling and I was wondering that if I decide to use a sculpting app to add details and so on, which one should I use?
I use Mudbox alot in some general cases but ZBrush is amazing too and Ive used both a ton in production.
If you could hit this link and vote in the poll that would be great to help me decide. (no registration required to vote)

I tend to get viewport artifacts and bugs in mudbox so I after I paint I have to rotate the model to wash off all the little screwed up boxes that appear.
I vote zbrush

Mud is ok, there definitely is a mother F-Ton of ZB documentation out there already so this might get lost in the rabble? One more for Mud would be good but it would be great to see some ZB stuff too. It might help balance them all out, you did one for Mud, do one for ZB.
Either way, I'm sure it will be filled to the brim with useful insight =)
Thanks for the quick responses! Mudbox was winning by 10 votes and that changed around really fast, now zbrush is ahead by 5.

Mudbox.
There's a ton of Zbrush videos out there already. We need quality Mudbox videos where the instructor has prepared in advance for the tutorial he's presenting.

Mudbox - I want to learn Z-brush really bad, but as its already been said, theres a TON of z-brush tuts out there already. Mudbox seems simpler to learn and use, though obviously more limited. Just my opinion.

I was gonna say this. Although I wouldn't have misspelled rubble. Pixologic have been releasing tons of video tutorials for free, yours would want to offer something pretty spectacular to sell...maybe Mudbox would be better?

Are you guys actually voting in the poll that was linked in the first post or just cheering for your preferred app?
Tumerboy

yes.
As a matter of fact it would be nice to show both, in order to stress out the different approach to things depending on the app being used.
projection master in zbrush vs stencils in mudbox
subtools in zbrush vs separated objects in mud
powerhouse polygon sculpting in z but poor zoomed in performance vs lower polygons in mud but consistant framerate
I don't think I have ever seen that, that would be sweet I think.

How does rubble even make sense? Rabble on the other hand...

Both is an interesting idea. This could be possible but I need to think about how it would work. Really the sculpting part of the video would be secondary, I wouldn't need to use it as much as in the pillar video. So doing the sculpting parts twice might not be a bad idea.

Do people really need mudbox tutorials? Really isnt that the point, its super simple to use? I can understand why people would want ZB tutorials, because that shit is from the moon. But mud is like, just open it up and work, is there anything more to it than that?
You make a good point, EQ.
"Both" would allow users to see the differences (or equal capabilities) between the two, which would be cool.

projection master in zbrush vs stencils in mudbox
Just FYI, there is a Stencil tool (which is working exactly like Mudbox) in Zbrush now ;)
-> Select your Alpha (Alpha panel > Make St)
I'm gonna vote for Mudbox, because it seems less documented than Zbrush (even if it's super simple, I guess there are still some little tips here and there to learn?) Let's hope the next version won't crash/freeze on my pc :(

Hey Riki, I voted zbrush but I really don't think the focus should be on a particular package. Each package has it's own little quirks but it comes down to technique at the end which is transferable between the two as you well know. It would be interesting to see each package used to create the asset and then you are catering to both user groups. It all would depend on the complexity of the asset though.
Also, I wouldn't go the complete beginner route and explain every single tool though as they are plenty or beginner dvds and tutorials out there already.
On a side note, your dvds have been a great help to me plus, you've always let me download them before my pay pal has gone through. :) So, thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

Well i think Zbrush
1) Your last dvd was using mudbox, soo i cant buy that one :( And i want to be able to buy this one...
2) I dont wanna go out and buy mudbox just for this ;)
3) Then if you do both not only are you making money, you are educating more people :)

I you could do the pillar tutorial with zbrush, it's basically just using noisy brushes to take chunks out of the pillar and generally ding things up.

maybe focus on zbrush, but then a short chapter on how you would approach the same task but in mudbox, like a brief overview, or vice versa

Hi everyone. Ive been slaving away with this video and should be releasing it over this weekend. Its over 8 hours long and goes through creating what you see below from scratch. I decided to use BOTH mudbox 2009 and Zbrush 3.1 (yeah, I sculpt everything twice, hahah).
Ill make an official post when its released, thanks again for helping us decide what to use in the video.

Fantastic! Looks great. Any plans to do a video showing it being made game ready?
Thanks, it didnt come easy. :)
I should mention that the modeling is done in 3ds Max 2010 so its not just a sculpting DVD.
As for the game version, Part 1 (which is this) goes over creating the high res, and Part 2 (coming out next in a month or so) will be taking this and then creating the low res (UVs, Baking options, in depth etc).
The idea behind this series is a more complex and modular design than the pillar, and more time spent in each section, without cramming it all into 1 DVD.

Pillar tutorial 10/10, my 2 cents is regardless of which app you use (zbrush imo) if possible could you go into more depth how exactly you create the appearance of crumbling, rocky type damage if indeed you cover this is in your next tutorial. Just found it difficult for my pillar not to end up like soft melted chocolate!
Looking forward to it :)
gonna get this for sure cool stuff
