Hello! I currently study Game Graphic at The Game Academy in Malmo Sweden. I usually post up my things at my blog but none is reading it so it would be better to post up in popular forums instead. It is first time for me posting a sketchbook in forums. So I can start over here at polycount. I hope I understood that sketchbook is for anything that is involved with 2d and 3d.

if you're not looking for crits or feedback go to the bottom of this post, otherwise read on:

pretty good amount of work so far, however to me they feel 'overly textured'
try working on your main forms and line more first to establish the content. you're rendering a lot but much of it feels like it is getting lost. try implementing points of interest/focal points in each composition.

that being said, try to put more thought into the actual composition itself as well.

the coloring itself also feels somewhat flat, despite all the rendering. try to learn more about color in general and how it works in the world. a blatant example would be the predator piece you have.. the armor is not being affected by the environment around it whatsoever. same with the warrior guy. in fact, I don't think there's any lighting in that one. establish a light source and stick to it.

I cannot recommend enough watching Practical Light and Color by Jeremy Vickery.
http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/jvi01.html

keep it up. I'm interesting in seeing how you progress.

overall, pretty sweet dude.

A agree that your enviornments are getting better. Like the lava mine, or whatever the huge sci-fi construction over the lava lake is suposed to be. It's allways nice to see your stuff David and it's very nice to see you posting here, hope you get some good crits :)

Do you have any advice on drawing landskapes? From where have you learned your techniques?

vofff
04-17-2009, 08:39 AM
Nah I dont have any techniques to paint environment. The most important thing is to know how to use color and to know shapes. I do speedpaint always because when u have so short time u will get faster to know colors and shapes and later u will discover ur techniques. Do loads of speedpaints and they should not be more than 1h. U will sooner find out about ur true identity of being an artist:D

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/vofff/Sunset.jpgI study some color with this one. And I tried to not take some pictures and texture and different brushes. So I used only round brush and calk brush. It took some time but it was worth it.

I managed to finish the platform. The heli flies a mate did it but the rest texture, modelling is done by me. This is one of the props I did to our shoot em up game.

hi man- good progression and photo use as everyone has said :)
one question though- are they all photo comps, or are there some pieces of other concept art mixed in there too? it looks a little bit like it, and if so you'll need to be very careful about your sources.
for example, one of your robot pics looks like it has chunks of a wh40k dreadnought cut in there? and others have a sort of mix of painting styles too, maybe some transformers robot bits mixed in? one looks like a paintover of last years dom war winner.

i like the last one better, as it looks more cohesive and like you've painted it all

edit: on a positive note, you're clearly passionate and have talent, which is why it seems a shame to use other stuff as a crutch- the real exciting stuff comes from developing your own style and techniques

vofff
06-04-2009, 03:03 AM
Hello rooster! Yea my previews stuff I have worked with was copy pasted things. I used too much texture overlays and was a little bit worried about my paints will look. But I have put away my fear behind me and started for a couple of weeks ago with only using round brushes. Like my teacher told me "kill my darlings" to evolve as a real artist. I will not using any photosource or conceptart for my further works it would be a little bit shame of me. Since now I know about composition, value, color it is better like u said develope my own style and techniques.

I'm diggin the character, it looks really good! and I must say she has a smokin hot ass!

however it does look like her ass crack goes too far up her back. I can't see to much of the face, but from what I can see it looks like theres something funny going on with the lips.

Looks good though! :)

DeusExMatteo
10-04-2009, 09:33 AM
WOW David, awesome! I really like her pose and balance. How did you start out? Maybe the background could use some more detail and resolution?

Looks really nice, looking forward to your presentation to morrow :)

danpV
10-04-2009, 02:37 PM
The figure looks great, but I do have a question: what material is her head-piece made of? I'm getting reads that tell me its a leather or fabric, and I'm getting other readings that are telling me its supposed to be metallic. Its somewhat difficult to figure out.

The environment is also rather interesting! I believe, however, that working in some more damaged structuring supports would prevent that "melty window pane" look that is occuring in your buildings.

Keep posting, I'd love to see more!

vofff
10-06-2009, 03:16 AM
Neavah-yes her ass is kinda off. I believe girls dont have that ass:( I mess up later after the posing. So I couldnt sculpt the face I want it. But I hav learned a lesson, and wouldnt do it again I hope:D

Matteo-I start with a zsphere and keep going on and on. I liked the zsphere a lot I dont understand why our class dont like it. Maybe they dont understand the tool yet.

Danpv-Yea I didnt thought about what material she was wearing, a big misstake though. She was wearing of some kind of light armour metall thing. It is hard to sculpt the scratch and even save the important area, I dont wanna mess it up.
The environment I did it in 1 hour quickly, I was more concentrated on the character. The windows I agree they seems to be melted, because I didnt knew what brush can make a crack alpha or what it is.

Here is a concept for an environment a final version will be in 3d. I have 3 weeks to do it. Texured, rendered and a beauty render. It should be an asia bladerunner mood style.

10-15-2009, 05:51 AM
Thx for the cheering danpv.
Here is a rough lowpoly scene I did today. Just putting some dummies of how the props will be in place. Specs is maximum 15k polys. Now it doesnt look like sci fi nor asia. But I will add more shapes to the houses and put more small details to ground etc.
http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/vofff/lowpolyrough.jpg

danpV
10-15-2009, 06:15 AM
If it helps at all, I can sense the Asian direction. So maybe that's working better than you thought! However, yes, you're right about this not feeling sci-fi. I'm actually getting a conflicting vibe of fantasy in the foreground and "ancient technology" in the background.

As you deduced already probably, a lot of this will be properly conveyed through the additional detail elements you intend to introduce. The era of the scene will probably be conveyed first through your use of artificial lights, greebling, and atmospheric perspective (smoggy/raining Blade Runner feel is a dead giveaway). You have the perspective, and you have an awesome height variation, but I'm worried the silhouette of the composition isn't as strong as it can be at the moment, but that can be easily addressed in a couple of tweaks to the background shapes.

Post an update soon, I got a good feeling about this comp!

vofff
10-16-2009, 09:19 AM
Here is an update. It was more work than I thought and still it is lowpoly. I had to add a little more details to lowpoly scene. Total polycount is 12898 can I still crank it up to 15k? Hmm I can add more small stuff but I will leave it that away. Does it look like now a sci fi,bladerunner, asia food market scene maybe? Btw thx for the advice danpV but I wonder how will I fit the whole scene into 3x1024 texture maps? I need some advice:)

Great work Voff. I like it a lot. I'd like to see it with some different lighting though. At first this(marmoset shot) looked like it was rendered in UE3. I think the lighting needs a little less saturation and i'd like to see a cold version of it.

Keep up the good work!

First of, nice freakin concepts and paintings! I like them!

I took the liberty to do a paint over on some of your stuff. Your optimization is a bit of. Try to make every edge count for a shape in your meshes. Otherwise the tris count will be unnecessary high.

Then i saw you used crazybump for both the normalmaps and specular. Crazybump is great for surfaces and stuff like that but you allways need to be careful with how you use it and how the outcome will be. You have some normals on stuff that really shouldent, like that poster of the two girls. And then you still got some shadows in their from the diffuse.

Then if you look at the specular you've made. First of it's way to high contrast and second, some of those stuff really shoulden have spec at all. Think about the roof for example, crazy much specular on the parts that where lit in the source photo. Don't really fit into real world conditions.

Maybe you've talked about this in class and stuff all ready. I know how fast things happened on KY-educations (: Hälsningar från PSQ (:

aaaha :P My mistake, sorry for that (: Ge, how many all and all? This is my first period and all and all we'll be making three game-projects.

The inhouse engine is done.... Inhouse :p It's created by Tension and used by Tenstar, aka the company behind PSQ. We don't have any editor, everything is done in Maya and then we export it true Tengine. Then our programmers solves the rest :D

We are working on a game called Eggnappers, silly name - silly game :D It's all about stealing eggs of your competitor. It's meant for some kind of TV-console for we emulate it on a PC with xbox controllers.

Been taking a look throughout this thread and I have to say, the improvement you've made is really great. I love the speedpainting style and in general your colour schemes have become a lot more subdued and relaxed which have really helped out.
That Assassin's Creed concept and Matte Painting for the zombie level are my favourites.
I would really love to see more 'finished' paintings, not saying speedpaints aren't finished but ones where you really spend a decent amount of time on a single piece (because the ones you've done like this are brilliant).
Keep it up man - I'll continue watching this thread.

Go to the shading drop-down in the viewport and make sure "Polygon Transparency Sorting" is checked.

Hi David! I like the overall style of your tiles, but noticed some details that looked weird to me :) Took the liberty of doing a quick list of those details.

1. imo. this edge looks crazy sharp compared to the rest of the scene and really screams CG-graphics, in a bad way. I would consider a bevel or trim of some kind.

2. You should try and move this piece up a little bit.

3. Bend these (the pointy things on the door) in maybe, so that they fit the wall?

Good luck with the game :)

hELLO MATTEO ops caps lock. Thx for the great advice, I looked the problem and didnt seemed to find the problems. I think I moved the walls not fit the quite proper right but dont worry because they will put into the editor later. The third point they are only a dummy. The most feature is to get the wall finish until deadline until friday:D

The texel density of that wall piece, compared to the door, crazy of. How faraway will you be from the wall ingame?

The floor modules looks cool, keep it up! :D

Lol I know hehe I forgot to crank it down to 1024 when I exported them out 2048. It will be so close that your weapon will touch the wall. The programmers will fix the density I hope.

meh, the last paint was from my ipad. Yea I heard so many times saying I should spend more time. Speedpaint is only exercise for my brain. Besides I dont see difference between spending more time on each paint, as we paint something our brain start to develope no matter what crap we do. Its a learning process baby!
Here is one as you requested and others, as I have spent this for like 3 days? Without any texture or crap brushes all are from oldschool. I partly agrees with u saying. There are no shortcuts just take the pen and paint something.

again I still like your enviros
the ships look nice but they seem a bit to de-constructed, maybe you should concentrate on big shapes, interesting silhouettes more
an interesting design comes from playing with big volumes not from details
I received the same advice myself since I also tend to get carried away with details and neglect the overall form

vofff
12-08-2011, 06:14 AM
Good thing I learnt something new, I am no good at ships but I will soon reach it.
Hmm I started with black silhouettes, maybe they werent clearly enough.
