heyas everyone, heres my start and the first thing that poped into my head.
going for a sort of .... a fallen dom war generals lifeless body collected by the machines, and repurposed for their army. parts of the general still live, the part that remembers human strategy and movement on the battle field.......and these were no mere machines that captured her, they happen to be wierd asian bublegum mecha porno machines....
ill be going for a bublegum cyborg sniper general. i just wanted something fun to work on,,,think commy redfaction, anime cyborg but alittle darker, pink metals meets twisted flesh.....thats what i got. heres a couple of quickies.

nice looking cyborgs so far, it's hard to keep the feminine shapes in there when your trying to go with some bulkier armor plates but i think your designs keep her looking sexy ^^

thanks fellas, id love some thoughts on how to make it more russian in shape wihtout adding furs, or the iconic russian military hats. just want something to push that theme alittle, let me know if anything pops
Awesome modeling so far man. I think the textures will really help sell the soviet tech sort of look, with decals or weathered sort of metals. Looking at a few of these concepts:

Maybe try to create some harder edges to make it less sleek looking...or add detail that defines the muscles, like the delts and biceps for example,...that could make it seem more "rough around the edges" or brutal. Just some thoughts, keep in mind I'm not a robot guy by ANY means, hehe.

good call, kieth thompson is great, ill be heading in that direction for sure on the textures, but i wanten to figure out a distinct russian look in the shapes, so there is harmony in shape and texture, the rifle will be like a long ak, or dragonov style, so that will help, just need to bring it into the body alittle. im sure i cal sell it in teh textures though, good stuff ill check out that red star.thanks man

I find it funny that the 2 things that i have mentioned first, being alchemy and keith thompson have been echoing throughout the forums ever since... Not that that is a bad thing as both are badass in their respective ways.

not sure if you want to go this route, but when you said "make it more Russian" the first thing that came into my head (i know, this is probably racist or something) was a nuclear warhead. Maybe you can try to incorporate some sort of a reactor or power source on her back/spine/butt? I could totally see some sort of wire source glowey thingie back there.
I really like this one a lot -- coming along nicely!

quck update, hi-polyifyin alittle, i'm not happy with the edging treatment i tried on the legs, ill work the arms and torso a bit , find a different style then revisit the lower half. thanks to everyone for the ref, good stuff. i fount that the only real "shape" that really reads as russian are the unique hats. and ill mimic the proportions of an ak or dragonov for teh rifle, other than that ,it will be the color scheme that reads with that red army vibe. thanks for all comments and crits. point em out if ya got em.

I do love the weight she's got. A run animation would be dope.
Perhaps adding more shape to her top half would add a bit more? I love her bottom heavy feel, but think that she lacking something ontop. Really sweet model so far!

It would be great to see some mask concepts and some plugs running along her abs from under the tubes down to her legs. Maybe some weight redistribution since she seems so bottom heavy, either balanced by bigger shoulders or gauntlets?

quickie update, i think im gonna leave the hi-poly alone, alot i would like to do, but i want to finish. im in crunch mode the whole dom war so time is thin. did the torso and face a bit, and a quick rifle as well, also would like to go fruther with it, ill tweak it when i make the low-poly, make it alittle more spacey like kevin. so other than some tweaks ill leave it.

Looking great. My only nit pick is that it looks like you can see the top of her granny underwear which is the only material of that kind on the whole model so it looks a bit out of place. Maybe you can find some way of covering up her naughty bits in the same way you covered her nipples. They are hidden but their shape is clearly conveyed by the piece of armor covering them.
My only other suggestion would involve some kind of battle damage and wear and tear as she looks like she just came off an assembly line with the paint still drying. I would love to see some bullet holes, scorch marks, or even some missing flesh so we can see if she even has some internal mechanical bits as well.
Really though, superb modeling. Love the quick renders with sss and all the other good stuff.

Man this thing has some really excellent weight to it. Really solid forms and proportions. Its great to see a deviation from what seems to be everyone piling on tons of random details and greebles all over their models to make them "detailed". Good to see you leave some nice smooth shapes so you can read the forms. Nice localized, sensible detailing.

great progress man now comes the fun of dirtying it up a bit :D. i the rifle is pretty sweet and the definition u gave to the torso is looking nice, i hope u can make another version of it after the war that's all bubble gummy like u initially wanted, i love that style. but it defiantly dosn't fit the war as well and u have a piece here that will do well with some good textures. Gl with remesh and textures!!!

looking good! one of my favorite designs so far.
be careful on the fingers, looks like you are loosing volume due to snapping to the high. usually after i snap a model to a high res mesh i do a push on the problem areas to compensate for the loss of volume. over compensating a tad is usually better than not having enough

I wanted to bump this cause it's sex. My only real problem are the nipple covers. You didn't need them.

Totally agree with Arshlevon though, those fingers look tiny, you should definitely push them out, I might even do the same for parts of the rifle, just to stop it looking as brittle.

As many have said, great feeling of weight giving her those giant bulky legs. Nice stuff.
My only crit is conceptual : With an enhanced mechanical body like that, who needs a gun?! Seems to me she should be a melee type fighter. The gun just doesn't belong if you ask me (not to mention its also very modern and plain compared to her robotics.

jsut started painting diffuse pass, going pink instead of red, diffuse is being used as spec right now so spec is jacked atm, the real time shots are max viewport, and the right is the begining of my mr shader set up for beauty render.
art machine, your prob right, im gonna try a pose with the gun, see if it work since its already in teh texture, but if its doesn't ill cut it. could just be the scout recon unit without the gun too.

wonderful! I don't really care for the pink, but I think when you get the spec in there and you crank up the glossiness it could really pop. You may not have enough "bubblegum" elements in the model to really sell it, but I'm sure it would be very easy to see many variations with the colors. Maybe try an orange of the same level of saturation? It would compliment the little subtle blue glowies spread around the model. Also, I would like to see rash or some other blemishes where the mechanical parts contact the skin to show chafing and the body resisting to some degree ;)

kicker, good calls. a peachy orange or orange construction would be fun too, the coloration could be any team color really. i like the pink just because its the furthest from all the brown grey mushy deamons we have going, i definetally would like to bubble gum it up alittle but still keep it hardcore, let me know if ya have any hits on making it alittle more bubble gum. ill be adding some rashy, veinyness etc for sure, this is jsut the first diffuse pass getting it all in there/
woogity, yea man im sure you can do the same shader in maya no prob, its just a simple blend material blending two shaders, with a black and white mask. a simple sss fast skin and regualr hard surface shader, theres really nothin trickey goin gon here.

this is definately awesome, but I have to say that the skin is getting washed up with the pink of the armor.
I suggest just making the skin more dead/ gray blueish.

god damnit Robb!! you HAVE to talk about your rendering setup. I killed myself trying to make something similar. I suppose my only crit is this setup is a bit heavy in the grain dept. it might be cool to see if you could pull out some super crisp sections to help drive focus.
Also, Im glad you sculpted the blocks shes standing on.

yea this was just a quick comp, to test color, look etc, there is too much grain for sure, the blocks she's on have not been sculpted yet, this is just a noise in max, ill mud them this week and normal them..
i found a great way to render, ill write it up for you, there is no gi, no final gather, and it renders pretty fast, just a couple area lights and exposure control, i dont even think the shadows are raytrace, there is alittle lightshader trick i use though. Blackbody shader for the win.

thanks guys, here is another, this will be close to my final. just need to finish up the graphic design, ill take my realtime presentation shots today at work. i may do one more render for personal purposes but other than that its time to move on, im ready for soemthin new, hope you guys like.

Wow Robb, fantastic. I would love to see a tad more expression on her face. Maybe a little squint with her head cocked(I know) forward a tad like she is trying to see something in the distance to put a bullet in? Just an idea

hah, thanks guys, ill do a lighting write up and example scene and have it posted by the end of the weekend, go a head and send me a pm if you want the example file so it doesnt kill my webspace by hosting it publically. ill try and get it out before the wekend but ive been in crunch the whole time so time is thin.

Hey Meshiah just how do you get the Blackbody shader to work?
I've found it in the base.mi file in 2010 but I can't seem to find the damn thing in Max.
I'm just curious what the heck this shader does.
From what I've read it's like a temperature driven shader?!

Here’s how to unlock those shaders
Browse to
C\3dsMax2008\mentalray\shaders_standard\include
Then open
base.mi ..in notepad
next delete the “hidden” lines under
Light utils
mib_cie_d
mib_blackbody
this will enable the blackbody and cied shaders.
they both do the same thing so it doenst matter whitch one you use
TO USE THE SHADERS
in max, make a mrskyportal, in the advanced parameters select Custom from the color source and select the MIB_blackbody shader,
drag an instance from the custom slot, to the material editor,
there are only two settings to edit, I usually keep the intensity at 2.0, then edit the temperature for color and intensity
2800 is soft candle light
6500-6600, would be like a fluorescent light or brighter light
(I also generally keep the light multiplier betweein 1.0 and 2.0 but you can crankit based on distance or needs).
Check the visible to render setting if you want to see the light, in the render or reflections.
beyond that its all about exposure control, when the lights are colored use your white balance to shift between a warm and cool image shift. then i like to use these light to "paint with light"
pixar style.
i should add you dont need final gather or gi.
as a general tip make sure to turn of the filtering in the materials, especially when doing game art. and especially with normal maps
