Holy shit these are all fucking sweet.
What sort of size do you work on those thumbnails at? They seem to have a fair amount of detail in them which looks cool! Also what sort of timeframe are knocking these out in? As ive really gotta step up my game if im to be of any use!
Inspiring stuff!

jackwhat: thx man, appreciate it. as for the thumbnails, sometimes it varies but I'd say like 300x300 or less. burn and dodge on a 50% grey bg. fast and fun, lol. timeframes, also vary depending on what I'm going for. the thumbs usually dont take very long to do but I'll often spend hours doing as many that pop into my head. the digital paints and illustrations take me a few hours as well, unless its a quick paint, then its more like 30-45min. but I tend to work on multiple things so locking down a specific time for any one img is tricky...
got some more stuff to post...
these 2 here are as yet unfinished but I'll be getting back to them soon (maybe, lol)

tone the white down some and just flat in some grey...

Yea, they are all pretty kickass. I'm a sucker for great gesture and they are chock full it.
*obligatory nitpick*: It'd be nice to see a little less monochromatic action and some more refinement. They really deserve it.

hey people. haven't posted in a few days, been working on some other things and taking some family time. ok here we go...
ae|peppi: thx, always nice to see others getting excited about my work, lets me know I'm doing at least one thing right, lol.
whipswitch: oh man, that's right on the nose, story of my life, lol. however, I'm making more of an effort to post finished works and should have some refined illustrations up to see soon. thx for the obligatory nitpick...just what I need every now and then.
zcorpion|bounchfx|coldkodiak: thumbnails are pretty much my favorite thing to do because I'm always coming up with new ideas and I need to get them out quick. as for the video, I'm sure I can cook something up for you guys in the next few days. It wont be a gnomon dvd but it'll be something watchable, lol. glad you all like the thumbs
gb: hey man! don't make me come over to your house and eat all your food again, lmao. we gotta get another few concept brainstorms going soon, post some work man your stuff needs to be seen, lol.
ok here we go again...this illustration here is a current WIP I'm working on, also I got another set of thumbs I did to warm up...
was warm enough to start painting after filling in only 2 of them, but they are thumbs, I'm sure I'll come back to them at some point for some juice

jouste: thx man, appreciate that. I usually do the thumbnails pretty fast, depending on what kind of thumbs Im doing, detailed or just loose shapes. I do tend to spend at least an hour or so most days just working out as many ideas as I can in thumbnail. most of them just get filed away for later use. glad to have ur support
shotgun: lol, thx
coldkodiak: ...nice, lol
pixelmitherer: thx, it seems I'll at least be known for making cool thumbnails, lol.
ged/monstro: good to hear I'm headed in the right direction with the latest piece, thx you guys.
truedeja: It's great that you can draw inspiration to take your art to another level, it's even cooler that my art is what inspires you, I'm honored, thx for the compliment.
ok still been quite busy with other things and dw4, but heres the current state of the last piece I posted. for now its done, but I will more than likely come back to it and add a few more things I can see would help it look better...

This one here is an illustration I did for an art contest that was focused around a redesign or re-imagining of a story or race within the Star Trek universe. In the story behind this img, the Romulans have discovered a strange derelict planet and whilst exploring, find a temple built into the planets surface. They enter by means of drilling into the rock formations around it. In doing so they unknowingly release an ancient cursed race of creatures that the extinct civilization that once lived there tried to contain within the temple vault....the Borg
note: I am not extremely versed in the Star Trek universe, just thot it was a cool storyline use...

Some illustrations Im still working out, evolved from older sketches and quick paints into story driven designs, stories in which I will be able to elaborate more on after they are closer to finished...essentially though, this first one is about a forest lemming who tames a god. The second is about the birth of a universe within the deep waters of our own planet, the universe is in fact an actual being, a goddess of the water so to speak, who rides a giant serpent like creature....still forming those ideas...

Hey guys, back again. A couple friends have been pushing me to make some process posts to show how I do my ink/marker stuff. So I figured why not, Ill be taking a character and an enviro sketch to a finished state and explaining my steps as I go along. Work is crazy so wont be done today but here's how I start out. Hope you guys enjoy!...
Step 01: Materials and Workspace
I really like working with inks and markers, mainly what you see here in these photos:
- Copic Wide Tip Markers (C1, C3, C5, C7)
- Cool Grey #6 2-Sided Touch Marker
- Bic Mark-It Permanent Marker (dried out and soaked in a liquid graphite and speedball ink mixture)
- Pelikan All-Purpose Black Paint
- An assortment of Clay Shaper sculpting tools
- Wooden palette knives
- Glass-top work table (one of three sifferent work stations in my tiny bedroom studio, lol)

These are the main three solutions I work with. Straight out of the bottle Super Black Speedball Ink, Some Powdered Graphite that I mix with a small amount of water and botanic oil (don't ask why it just works, lol), and finally a mini tub of Gain Laundry detergent...no not the whole thing. It was near empty so I just appropriated it and mixed about a 3/4 of a cap with the Pelikan paint. I like it because its smooth, dries slow on yupo paper, and it makes my paintings smell really nice.

Step 02: Visual Brainstorming
I almost always start out with a few pages of thumbnails, first just to get into a rhythm, then after about a page or so, I start to expand with different designs more focused on whatever pops into my head that I think would be a cool idea. Usually by the time I get to 2 or 3 pages I've formulated exactly what the idea is, then I either do one more page or so with that idea strictly in mind, or I start doing some full page sketches. In this case however, Im starting with full page sketches since there really is no set design parameters, it's just whatever I think of. Here are some sketches that Ill be picking from. Might do some more character sketches when I get home, and come to think of it, might do some thumbnails after all, lol...

Best art bomb i've seen in a while, and now you give us a tutorial!!!
Mr. Lemonhead, you spoil us! :D
I've tried developing a similar workflow but only using digital media (based on a scott robertson gnomon dvd), trying to emulate marker sketches in photoshop. It nearly works but it misses something. You've inspired me to have another go at it.
Lémonhead
07-29-2011, 07:11 PM
Stinger88: haha. Man that Scott Robertson DvD is awesome, and also a big part of how I got where I am with this kind of process. I only started using Copic Markers because of that DvD, lol, that guy is amazing. Also the Syd Mead Value Sketching DvD got me super inspired to do more marker stuff.
Here are some more sketches for ideas. I did end up doing some thumbnails and in doing so decided to go with a real gadget/scifi type of feel, with a character and an enviro that look to belong to the same world. Nornally I take a bit more time with more sketches but I don't have a whole lot of it to myself these days so I'm going to push on from here and pick a character thumb and enviro to go with...Ill post the next steps when Ive gotn em done...

Joseph Silverman: haha, thx! yeah, alot of these end up getting real crazy, outside of photoshop they can get hard to read. but I don't worry about that too much since I can throw them into PS and knock back whatever shapes I want with some atmosphere and what not.

Sweet mother of all that is awesome!
I need to get me some skills like this. I haven't used "real" media to any extent for some time now (shame, shame) but I'll be buying some when you drop a video just to try and emulate this style. Until then I'm going to try and develop a similar technique with digital software if its possible.

Stinger, dont wait to experiment with this style! Get some kind of medium (lemonhead describes his mixture a few pages back -- ive experimented with oil paint medium and its worked great), some speedball black ink, and whatever brushes/marking tools you want, and give it a go!

@Squareko: Hey, thx for the comment. I tend to experiment with my lighting and values further after Ive scanned in the sketches. But I've been looking into different techniques and tools to incorporate more dynamic lighting as well as more definable detail into the sketch phase for some time now, so I'll be adding that link you posted to the rest of my ref, definately a good source, thx for that!

A really unique style, your sketches have a really dynamic feeling to them, in both the execution and composition which is what I like.
Lémonhead
08-14-2012, 05:48 PM
@Daven: haha, thx. what got me into using inks?, not really sure exactly when or what, but I remember just wanting to work with a medium that was traditional, but that I could use as if it were digital. I arrived at inks by sheer process of elimination, which included looking for a surface to work on that didnt curl or tear when subjected to layers of water/ink. I've kind of spoiled myself now because I don't like working on any other paper than Yupo Blue. No other paper that I've tried has its smoothness and durability when it comes to layering wet media and the various tools I use. but I wont bore you with my life story, lol...hope that was a good enough answer.
@Kinetic: thank you, much appreciated. I'll definitely do my best to help you out, though I'm still learning myself. I'll tell you what I know and see, lol
@[demonplay]: I mostly gravitate to and take pleasure in seeing other artists who have a highly dynamic style, mood and energy. Its good to know that I've been able to achieve some of that with my own work, thx

Working on some fun outrageous ideas about a 3 Stooges ReMake and what it would be if it were done by Michael Bay...lol.
It's the year 2030, the world has been devastated by the zombie apocalypse, 2 alien invasions, and the release of "Transformers 6 in 4D", which was followed by an actual killer robot uprising. The last hope for mankind rests on the shoulders of 3 forgotten heroes...The Stooges!
Here is Moe, think Rambo meets Raiden. He was bitten by a zombie, but stole some tech from one alien species that allows him to control the mutation as long as he consumes the blood from the other alien species. He has the power to regenerate (unless he loses his head), and he can shoot electricity from his eyes and hands (happens at random after eating an alien)...
