Basic Zbrush question for those of you out there who might know what the hell I'm doing wrong.

I made a head model in Max, exported it as a .OBJ, imported it into Zbrush and this is what I get.

Which is fine, but then I hit that Divide button under the geometry rollout in the hopes of smoothing my geometry out so I can start sculpting some detail in and this is what I get.

As you can see, the geometry isn't as smooth as it can be and my usual method around this is to apply meshsmooth in MAX, but I want to be able to re-export the low-poly from zbrush. Am I missing something in the general exporting/importing process here? This is really shagging my willingness to work on this project. :(

Many thanks to anyone who can offer me any help!

Looks like your mesh is triangulated. Make sure you have modelled it in quads, and make sure your settings on the OBJ exporter in Max are set to "quads" or "polygons", but not "triangles".

Also, as you said it works well with meshsmooth, it might probably be as a editable mesh triangulated model, not as an editable poly.

Yup, that was the problem. Many thanks! :D
