Like i said, I can only assume its 'cause of my BRDF or something, because,
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8479/weirdg.jpg
as you can see the issue isn't apparent up close :/
It may be a mipping issue, try adding more padding and seeing if it goes away? If you've got UV chunks really close to other chunks that could be a problem too.

i padded the 3ds max bakes with 64px and the xnormal ones with 32px, And there'd be no less than 4-5px between any cluster and i'd guess about 10 on average
I think it might just be this pixel i ran along the top of my brdf to eliminate a stupid artifact which appeared in the centre of lit areas because the brdf isnt clamped.
a well thingie for airborn. (yeah cheap crosspost from the awsome marmoset viewer thread.)

Popeye, that garbage bag texture looks kinda weird... I reckon just getting some photo reference from black trash bags and mimicking them, this looks like some kind of procedural texture right now.
the grunge on the lamp post goes up pretty high... have people been climbing high up on it and getting it dirty up there?
Rest looks pretty good though! Good modeling

Hey Seforin,
cool barn house,
do you think you might get same results for the roof if you just used 2 tri planes and put separate pieces at the bottom trim of the roof? or are cuts like that more common when you have a depth to the roof? I havent see many projects with this... There was a barn posted a while ago "Barn WIP" i think the thread was called done in cryengine, looked similar, I think he used seperate pieces for the shingle trim... Does your roof have depth as well? cant tell...
Are you modeling interior or just the exterior?
Edit: current WIP, inner hallways from rich eccentric hunter... animal heads otw. also pillars and inset room are all stand in props...

You should definately make the front wheel rounder, with the yellow 'background' theyre a real eyecatcher. With 32 polies you could make the wheels twice as round, I cant do a paintover right now tho :(. Also, somethinbg doesnt really feel right with the scale of the seat and/or the steering wheel. Either make the seat bigger or the wheel smaller(or a little bit of both). Looks pretty damn good for a first low poly :)

thanks for the crit! I agree the wheels are WAY too low poly - I actually think the wheels are the worst part of the model at this point. You might be right about the seat scale... I think its close, but Ive been staring at it for so long I cant really tell anymore. This is what I used as a reference image:

Your steering wheel has more subdivisions than your big wheels, you should change this :) Make your steering wheel and the bolts on the wheel caps a bit smaller, that will help fit it the scale of the seat and make it look larger. You could also add a warning/instructional sticker to the side for scale - those things are usually about 6" or so, so it'll help sell the scale a bit more. Ad some more wear at the top of the little step on the body, where people would be kicking it each time. move the steering wheel a bit closer, too, that and scaling it will help fit the seat better. The proportions look a bit goofy in your ref, so you kind of need to correct for that in your model and provide internal scale references so it reads better.
Overall your texture is looking a little muddy, not sure if thats a resolution, WIP, unwrap, or other issue. sharpen filter it a bit and see if it pops.

IMO though, it looks more like hes in the position to be holding a sword as opposed to swinging a giant spike ball. Seems to me like his arms should be stretched out a little more and the chain should be straightened a little bit to get that ball looking like its really heavy.
with different shadows, this could almost fool anyone into thinking it's real.

Not had much time for personal work lately, but managed an hour or two of doodling in PS. I found some cool kanji calligraphy online and worked them into some Japanese-inspired characters designs:

yeah doing hand painted textures was really wierd for me to do. but i think i did a pretty good job.
They were wii spec requirments i could use 1024x1024 for everything
and basically keep it under 4000 polygons , simple requirments i think the thing that got me was the foilage so might have to do practice on that :P
i had fun making it, and learned alot about optimizing models.

Why is it so important to have so many poly on a flat surface? Im new to modelling myself, And to me it just seems like alot of poly consumption. Cant you just have it as one flat poly surface? please explain this to me..

That is called High Poly modeling.....normal maps...

in light of noel confusing me for bitmap I will try to answer this.
With the model you referenced that bitmap made, it's irrelevant really. with High Polygon models the goal isn't to adhere to a strict budget of polygons but to get the shape as close as possible without regards to what it costs.
If it was for use in a game then yes, the amount would matter, but in this case it's either just for rendering or baking down to a lower poly version. Hope this helped.

So.. A Flat Surface isnt Completly Flat? Like.. 1 Polygon Face? Not completly Flat?

1 triangle is flat. 1 quad, surrounded by other quads going in different directions, then smoothed, is not flat.

It can't be one flat poly surface because:
1) It's not a flat surface, it's a round surface, and it must be composed of either triangles or quads. Having it be one circle shape would make it an ngon. Models full of ngons get messy and can lack a proper flow.
2) You need some extra loops to make sure a subsurf operation doesn't completely round it off. It helps reinforce the shape on flat surfaces, or where you need corners. Try subsurfing a cube and see what happens. (You get almost a sphere). But when you bevel the edges to add the extra support loops, you get a cube with rounded edges.

hey BJA. nice colors going on there.
A little scene for UT3. Everything, except for the water shader and fire particles is custom content.

Looks pretty ace, but wouldn't a 1024 map be a little much for a prop like this?

Your right Dekard, it was more for me for learning how to get a decent normal map out of a hard edge model, having some major headaches with smoothing groups and stuff :(
Should have mirrored two sides of the model in the texture which would have cut the map size in half just about. Thanks for the crit.

That would have caused new problems ^^ but... not any problems which can't be solved.

Finally got a chance to use the Alchemy program... so fricken awesome, going to try and at least get a couple of these out per day.
Here's a couple I did during a sitting, hopefully this can help me understand how to create stronger silhouettes overtime.

Looks awesome Don, im sure the winners are going to love to get a print of one of those.
One thing though
His shackles are opened at the top, how exactly are they going to stay on him? Is it slightly laying on top of his wrists? Seems like it might snap off pretty easy O_o

The idea is he's breaking free from the shackles.

Thanks very much for doing that video man. Cheesy or not, you're right a bad texture can't make a good model look any better. I understand the thinking behind texturing, but I really don't know how to use photoshop to its fullest. Seeing some of your brush settings, layer work and workflow is awesome learning! I'm gonna make a crate now for practice! Go Crates go!

The idea is he's breaking free from the shackles.
I think with a bit more gesture in this pose it could be really great. If you look at the painting, there is a lot more gesture in there, with his back arched and that. And also some gesture in the chains, if he is breaking free at that moment, would be great. A bit of transposing would do it.
