Medestruit, the detailing you have is pretty nice, but I think some of those edges are chamfered/beveled too thin. The edges might look too hard when you bake it down.

Well, the edges I did add extra loops to were meant to be hard. I loosened them a bit since I took that screen because I started to optimize parts of my pillar base before I import it into Mudbox. Most of the detailing stuff is all floating(actually, basically all the extra detail is floating). Still going in and adding other bits of detail before I dirty it up, but it's getting closer to being sculpt-worthy. Been juggling time between this, the painting I'm doing o my daughter for my fiancee's Valentine's Day present and photoshoots...so who knows when I'll actually finish.

Nice Josh_Singh, love it! I don't know if you're looking for crits, but the deltoid's insertion is a bit strange, it's not really inserting on any bone.

Diggin the TF2 chick Josh. I really like how you tried to exaggerate the proportions (like the boots, hips) but i would love to see you push it more. Like skinny arms, more to the hips, ect. And the face looks kind of normal at the moment. Kick ass though!!!

That's a weirdly bulky breathing apparatus! I'm all for going with it, not stifling it. Smell your own tits! Maybe you can add tubes that come out to smell stuff... or they just lead to all his warm spots. *deep inhale* Why? I don't know, what is it doing now? Get off me!
FAT_CAP ooks ace.
jsut wondered whether to make the underbelly a bit lighter, kind of an ochery white for more contrast.
the light bits seems to have a warm almost pink tinge to them at the moment.
perhaps a cooler color would make it pop a bit more
might be wrong though, still looks cool

Thanks. I have done a whole lot more since I posted that.
Wow so much awesomeness in this thread as usual!!! :D
Medestruit--Looking good so far, just a couple suggestions to take it even further:
-Be sure to take note of the actual form underneath the colour and shade. Right now, the form is looking a bit flat. When it comes to the roundness of the cheek, you gotta really follow the form and get a feel for the shapes. Same with other areas like the nose, which is looking a little too flattened right now.
Also, I know it's not done yet, but make sure to add some flush tones in the cheeks and nose to make it more alive :)
One more thing, and that's that the mouth is looking a bit small right now--you might want to try overlaying the image directly on top just to see what porportions are off.
Otherwise, looks cute, I'm sure the fiancee will love it. :)
Medestruit
02-09-2009, 01:10 AM
Yeah, I haven't called the face done...I just needed to move on to the clothing to get a better feel of light reflections and what tones are going to project onto the face from the clothing. I actually have a 2 pixel contours drawing layer that I have over the top of my work that is a direct contour sketch from the actual picture, and all my forms match it perfectly...but as you notice in the lips, I haven't completed them. I stopped on them to start on the eyes so I could get a better feel of proportions I currently had and just never went back to finish. Basically what I'm going to so to make sure I meet my deadline is add in adjustment layers to tweak it once I have my basic shape and tone down. I'm painting it all a bit more dull than the actual picture to adjust for this.
The only thing I'm decently satisfied with right now are the eyes. I think they've turned out pretty well thus far, and need the least tweaking of everything. It's hard enough to paint eyes(especially since this is the first time I've done a painting in probably 5 or 6 years, and first time I've pulled out my tablet in about 4 years), even harder when the eyes are as gorgeous and vibrant as hers.
Here is a little more progress from tonight:

What's the point of making a digital painting of a photograph? If you print it you're right back where you started, especially in this case since you're trying to make a photorealist render. I understand you're trying to get lucky on Valentine's, but this is lame.
Take some greater artistic freedom with it. Even as practice, you want to make something that's interesting to look at by itself. In this case the painting adds nothing to what the photograph offered already.

I have no reason to try to get "lucky"...as it being obvious by us already having a child with another on the way. She is a photographer, I do more digital stuff...I'm using my talents(or lack there of) to imitate her's. Some would call that flattery. People paint duplicates of portraits all the time, regardless of medium. So as "artsyfartsy" you must really hate 90% of all artwork. Originality in the painting domain has been absent for the better part of the last 200 years. But yes sir...I will NEVER try to imitate reality, be realistic and true to subject ever...ever again *rolls eyes*
Would you rather me sit my 6 month old daughter down for a multi-hour painting session(which is not possible with a child that young)?
Davidson3D my favourite is teh detail of the plates on his back and his old & dry looking elbows.

Your reply is lame and pathetic. Let the guy do what he wants, who the fuck are you lay into him?
He's a member of the forum, voicing an opinion. You've been around since 2004 - c'mon, you know how it is :P
His point, while being rather rude about it, I think is perfectly valid. Trying to mimic a photo to the T in an illustration won't have as much artistic impact as, say, if it were done of an impressionistic style.
However, 'artistic impact' isn't likely the goal as it is likely to do something from the heart, with love. So, lets let him have at it and enjoy it along the way.
Carry on :)
Some awesome work in here :D

Damn adam, keeps on getting better and better.
It's a little confusing right now as to what is happening in the scene. it may be because of all the strong silhouettes (which look damn awesome) but it may kill some of the depth / distance information. Maybe tilting the camera down (move up) a bit, it may ground the scene more, but then you lose those cool silhouettes.
Meh either way, its fricken awesome, and I love the background.
Edit: oops, never mind, I just saw the shots you posted previously, now it makes more sense. ALGEBRAIC!

thanks for the love guys ^^
i painted the 3d shapes with all the lightning in photoshop i used some secret of mana sprites as reference: http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/tutorials/tuts/tsugumo/13.gif
than i put it on a plane and started cutting where i saw hard edges on the texture and than pulled all highlight verts out. making all the variants was a matter of choosing which rocks to delete out of the original model and than maybe applying a lattice or bend deformer for a slightly different shape
this will be the new gras:
http://warby.bitproll.de/wip/gras_texture.jpg
no custom brushes used all hand pixeled but than generously copy pasted scaled and rotated
really cool warby, only crit is it the texture doesnt really read like rock. The shading and texture are great, but the colors make it look more like cheese mountain than a rocky mountain. Either way looks really tight.
warby, those rocks remind me of the cool jagged rocks in Boktai. Nice work.

@mr. Brome - I really like the big leaf Ivy vines, nice call.
I wonder what would look like if more of the tree leaf brown was found in background details on the righthand side. would the green wash be more effective if broken up by more of that color in the background? im just guessing but maybe eye goes from brown wood bridge to tree leaf and finally into the background following that color?
Looks great though, you are definitely one of my top fav enviro artists!

Medestruit - I think you really need to push the saturation in your colours, the likeness and whatnot is there but youve lost a lot of the vibrant colours. I back Artsy's opinion to some extent in that I think you should push realism and piss about with colours as opposed to a direct copy.
So in places like the nose / eyes why not push the colours some more, more orange / turquoise and the subtle pinky cheeks - stuff like that is where you can have some fun and breath life into a picture! - why im talking like i know something... i dont know :E

Sorry Adam, but to be honnest, I liked the old version better. I think that you lost your focus point on this version. The foreground elements are better, though :) I really liked what you did with the tree and the flying leaves in the old version, it added a nice magic feel to the scene. And I'm not sure to like the current tree's shape. It's definitly less tree-ish than the previous one. But maybe this is deliberate? :)
I also still think that the image is lacking of color variations, it's REALLY green and a bit too foggy (for my taste) right now.
Just some thoughts ;)
Anyways, cool work mate, can't wait to see the final piece !
Oh btw, a tiny update on my current model :
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q48/Guntharf/model04.jpg
Adam : I know I msg you saying I wouldn't post here, but here are my crits, still :
*you lost the focal point
*you just tweaked the lowpoly of the tree to make a new one, but the flaws of the original are still here
*don't hide your focal point into blurry shit and fog
*trees don't grow on cobblestone >_>
*WAY WAY WAY too green, try to add those lights even without light sources for now, you'll fill that out later on, but the lighting needs a LOT of balancing to catch the viewer's attention.
*redo that fucking bark dammit
*have you tried mixing 2 different normals over a mesh ? One normal would convey the global details of the tree+ an AO pass, the other one the smaller details of the bark (and a third one the microdetail, which is shared by all materials of the same style) this can easily be done in unreal.
*be more subtle in every aspect of your scene creation
*leaves don't mean anything anymore, your tree is offset too
*here's a composition sheet ref I found on Nick Zuccarello's site (http://nickzucc.blogspot.com/search/label/tutorials) a little while ago, always useful :

Vahl & Renaud- LOL, Well, I guess "a couple framed-off sections from 2 different angles I'm working from" wasn't very clear. I'm aware of the tree, that tree's don't grow on pavement and the lights/lanterns, you guys know that.

Still adding details. Work on my painting is almost done, so I have more time to get back to this.
Lunchtime progress shot of the new tree(s), which will be growing out of a mound of dirt & rock, on top of the platforms. The idea of the scene is how windy it is, or would be, up this high in the sky. Overtime tree's adapt to their surroundings so I am building them to look wind swept. As well, this is the very beginning of the tree's progress. The idea is I'll continue with what is seen in the picture below all the way up the tree, then go back and do smaller branches coming out of the thicker ones at the bottom. Then bring in to Mud and do the magic in there.

Then bring in to Mud and do the magic in there.
http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/17188/qb_treewip02.jpg
This looks like it's growing underwater to me.
I think the windswept look comes more from the overall movement of the tree, rather than individual branches. The branches you have are making too drastic a turn. Instead, I think it would be better to just remove the branches that would be growing into the wind (leave stumps, like they snapped off), or have them grow closer to the direction of the trunk, and have that trunk give gradually to the wind.

I think that last one would be a good overall shape for your scene, with the branches kind of trailing off the way your leaves will be in the air.
Good point about looking underwater. My intention is to do a tree that feels mystical, and not model it after any one tree type in particular. Having it blown over slightly like that will get too much in to the center of the composition, which isn't what I'd like. I've got the last image you posted saved and I'll see what I come up with.

I never really played Street Fighter but I want to start entering more of these challenges so I looked up the characters and decided on Balrog. Its also a test for me to try to get more comfortable in zbrush so I just started doing a bunch of brute force modeling and its working out ok. All wip ofcourse!
So many other SF entries that are way beyond what I can do lol.

Old nasty house for a little scene.

I've just started playing around in UnrealEd3, here is the progress of my first creation; a jersey barrier for a scene.

i made one of those tanka - yours looks quite rockish than concrete so i suggest:
1. reducing the size of the rock (so in photoshop scale it down and clone some areas ... so the details are smaller
2. reduce teh saturation

I'm getting ready for another match in the zbrush. Finally gave up on the retopology tools in Z and went back to good old maya.
Here is the base mesh I'm taking to Z this time.

I know human anatomy is human anatomy, but there are some striking similarities on how it was modeled and which parts you chose to show/occlude. Just wonderin'

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback!
Bounchfx: Not sure yet what I will do with the jaw. I kind of like the angular form of it, but it draws maybe too much atention, well we'll see.
AdamBrome: it's been a while since i saw the movie. Maybe should see it again then. :)

Speedpaint, trying to understand landscapes. From a flickr photo, i swear somebody on here has posted a (much better) painting of this same picture before.

Beautiful anyway, looks a bit like Crater Lake. Is this Photoshop, Painter..? What sort of brushes did you use?

Hell yeah i sure did use it as a reference, along with some illustrations. Just like a painter would recreate a painting i figured i would learn better by following along, and i sure did. I can't believe i forgot to credit Zack! =/

Yeah I had the same problem before, got around it by first choosing cancel when saving and then saving again. Hope it helps :)
now it's too late it's gone... tried to redo it... after 5 minutes i stopped casue it sucked too much, but thanks i'll try that

Neox, make sure there are no stray verts in the mesh you're importing. I had that same issue crop up occasionally and finally found out that stray verts were the cause.
nope mesh was all quads, totally clean and as you see very simple... polyspheres are sucky that tend to do very weird things

Just remembered this from a few weeks back and I saw you were not sure where the bones and stuff came from so I thought I would play detective :P Looks awesome dude -- great study!
Oh yeah and Neox -- try cranking the compact mem size. The default is 512 so every 512 megs it'll use your hard drive as a scratch disk and create a tremp file. More ram = less referencing the temp file = less crash while saving :)
hmmm is there a way to open that temp file? xD

not that I know of ... I know if you send pixologic your files when ZB crashes they can attempt to retrieve them. I am going to a Gnomon gallery opening toite and I can swing by the Pixologic studio while I am there -- I have been meaning to ask them a few things anyway. I will report my findings when I return > : )

Neat looking critter warriah. I like its ears.
Since it seems like so many people are sculpting Zangief for the comp (can't blame them though, Zangief is awesome) I thought I'd change mine up and go with Ryu instead. Surprisingly he's not that popular in the comp even though he's probably the most iconic character of the game.
