I've really been lovin' the TF2 posters that have been cropping up in the last few pages.
I've been working on this weapons crate prop the last couple of days and it would be great to get any kind of feedback on it.
There's a shading error on the back that I managed to iron out in Max by editing the normals but Unreal has very kindly reinserted for some reason.
Tri count is 2218, and textures are currently 2048 diffuse, spec, emissive and normal. I've got plans to include this in a scene that I have in mind at which point I'll reduce the texture size to 1024.

Texturing up my sci-fi canister thinggy. I still feel like it's missing something. Maybe more text or signage on it. I'm also thinking about doing up a new normal for the wide band of shiney metal at the bottom. It came out weird, and I think it needs some detail to sell the thing. There's a bit of clean up to do on the low poly as well from some details I didn't end up needing to add to it. Anyway here's the progress, using the Xoliul viewport shader and one of Laurens' free cubemaps. Thanks dude for making those resources available!

I've never made any modular assets before, so I thought I'd give this tutorial (http://www.brameulaers.com/tutorials/generic_wall_tutorial/generic_wall_tutorial.html) a shot and see how I do. I probably should've made the blocks more even so they look more realistic and tile better, but I guess I know that for next time now. And the textures are... meh. Whatever; it was a learning experience.

Great stuff. I've noticed with a lot of your sculpts that you give your more realistic characters fairly small eyes. Any specific reason, or just stylistic choice?
MikeF:
Looking good so far, though the plants look a little out of place because there isn't anything else like them in the scene yet. I take it you're going to be making more similar plants and such to place in it?
I decided to go back and refine some details sans textures. I think I like it a little better, even if it doesn't exactly fit the TF2 look:

morte: Thank you for the generous words, I really appreciate it. I don't currently have a portfolio online, but I think I'll set up something nice and simple soon.
Swizzle: Thanks. I wish I could say the small eyes were a stylistic choice, but honestly, I think it's simply a result of me having a somewhat flawed awareness of proportions in my characters. With the benefit of hindsight and your comments, I definitely agree that the eyes are too small and detract from the character's presence. I'll be sure to pay extra-close attention to eye proportion in future work.

Where you guys referring to my post when you said "Aztek?" If so, it was done in UT3... the reason i ask is because it was actually based off of cambodian ruins, but i guess it reads aztek now that the color scheme has slighty shifted to a more yellowish green from a more bluish green.

If I can "chirp" in the beak looks a little flat on top and too curved at the bottom. Toucans beaks curve upward at the top and are flat along the bottom. The hook at the end is quite unpronounced. Like so:

Unfortunately I think the normal ends up coming across as rumpled up canvas, especially where that pinch is right next to the larger "rock" form, that really kills the impression that it's a rock. I'd recommend looking at more reference, and thinking about the natural processes that create the shapes and textures of rocks.

If you want to put it into an game engine, you will be wondering i think...
All these ngons will be turned into tris and i think it will raise the polycount almost triple times if not more.
FAT_CAP

Thanks for the input guys - it's nice to get a fresh pair of eyes on this piece.
@MOP - the thick wrists was meant to be a bit of a stylistic choice - giving him tree trunk like arms. It might not work as well as I had hoped though especially since the rest of him is quite realistic in nature - I will give it a try with thinner wrists to create more of a silhouette and see if it works better.
@woogity - Good call! I am reading through Hunter S Thompson's: Hell's Angel book at the minute so the bike chains as necklace/ weapon came from that. The hammer is a great idea although it looks a little small - I'll have a look around for ways of making it a bit more chunky.
@MM - Thanks man. I had originally planned to give him a shotgun of some sort but thought a wrench/ melee weapon would be a quicker to knock up... I always get an itch to move onto the next character when I near the end so was trying ot keep things simple to keep myself motivated!
I hadn't thought of modelling the grooves in the sole of the shoe - I'll test it out and see what it looks like - hopefully it doesn't add too many polys.
@Ruz - Yeah the proportions have really bugged me on this one. I'll give it another once over and see if I can sort it out - I think half of it might be to do with having no toher scale reference in the scene.

90% of what you have modelled there can be done on a normal map much, much nicer, or on the texture itself if diffuse only.
I would take some of those wasted tris and apply them to the shape of the model instead, its all very "boxey" atm.

Not bad, but I think this would be improved a lot if you went in with the Flatten brush and really punched the main shapes of the faces, right now they look very "soft" while carved stone faces like this tend to be very stylised with sharp edges between the planes (especially lips, cheekbones and eye sockets).

It's a bit inaccurate in some areas, particularly the grip.
I'm not sure if you're aware but http://www.pixagogo.com/DeicideNBF is a large ref gallery for weapons. There are big M4 and 416 albums in there as well so you might be able to compare what you've got to those photos and improve a few things.
Hey that was a really awesome link, but it might just be me but a lot of the stuff I clicked on was missing :/

Yeah I think they're moving servers. A bunch of the photos are down, particularly the FN FNC Para photos.

Adam, like 8FtSpider said, your work has a quality that's very recognizable. I delight each time you post a new piece and will be looking forward to see what you create in the future.

Thanks for that crit on the front, i'll fix that up. Managed to get this almost finished today, really surprised at how much faster I'm modelling these days. Some of the details I'm putting into the texture just because I know it won't be seen up close.

thanks for the crits.
for the handle part, thats how it was in the refrence that I had, but I think I'm going to change it to the one thats in the other refrence photos because that seems to be the most widely used grip for this gun.
@Racer445
Thanks for the link. I wish I had that when I started. Also, your AK74 tutrial on your portfolio is actually what inspired me to do this gun. (this is the first gun I've made) I love the texturing part of the tutrial, and I am definatly going to use that as refrence when I do the textures.

n88tr, why aren't there any rounded edges on that thing? Guns aren't just rectangular in cross-section, they have to fit into hands comfortably.
I whipped up a few more robot thumbnails. I'm just throwing ideas around right now, trying to come up with some strong, readable shapes.

21 and 26 are definitely something I'd love to see worked through.

A chunky pixel 2d rendering framework for Unity. The top editor show shows a rough approximation of what the 2d scene should look like, while the actual game view is rendered with unitys GUI to assure accurate low resolution blocky pixel look.

Awesome man! it's rendered through the GUI? you're kidding. that doesn't sound like fun to build. care to share a few comments about the development?

Yeah I agree that would be awesome. I'm in love with unity at the moment and have been working on a small rts game for some weeks now.
keen: That could really be cool for a paper mario style game, or even something like fez :)

Well, if you're going to have the paint that weathered I'd say grunge up the rest of the model a bit.

Surfa: your normal map seems to be pretty wanked there? Or maybe you're not exporting mesh normals with your OBJ?
Surfa

Ok I will grunge up the paint.
Also is this better for the normal map I had the wrong one selected.

that looks a bit better, howerver ther still looks like you have some areas that are unlit or something. make sure you dont have object space selected(if using a tangent space map)

edit: Right I think I got it fixed. I will stop posting until I finalize the texture more. Thanks for the help EarthQuake

hehe, thanks aesir, to be honest, i have no real idea how this works precisely :D
all i know is that the whale is a rather huge object that the tf2 players can jump onto and ride it or something like that ;)

been making some high poly space junk based of Paul Richards concept not, entirely true to the concept bit of artistic licence in there! still got to add a control console and some more barriers. I was thinking about making it into like a monorail trolley type thing.....:s
