Finished rendering this modular store model for a big scene i am working on which include the door and the archway i finished. I am looking to make a claustrophobic looking alley with a victorian era look with older elements in the scenery. The storefront model i made will have a gloomy but basic look to it with decorative props i can use to dress up different variants of the same model.
My wakeing up process.
A big cup of coffee and some hours of smuding around with some oil paint each morning or so.
40 x 30 canvas*
Bad photo but im not going to fuzzm around with lights for an hour just to get a wipshot

Rens, you have a game-boner the likes of I have never seen before!
Spacey: It remind me the good ol' "the day of the tentacle" character art, I love it!
Bk: thx dude!
Ahh thanks JFletcher, didn't see that directly :O
Anyway I reworked the grip area so the rubber grip stuff integrates better into the plastic
(I am fully aware of those ambient occ floater stuff's shadows )

I havn't done anything with ps/max for a while so it's time to start again. This is the result of messing around with some photos brushes and other stuff (spent most time painting that lava). I'm not going to make it tile, this is just a test. I think I'm going to try to make a normalmap with the ps filter and make a spec map. Never made a normal map and spec map before :)
Try Crazybump instead of the nvidia normalmap filter. Usually gives you better results

Probably should have started with the face, heh. Will show more soon. Also going to make the body less bland, add some tattoos, straps etc etc.

How do you guys feel about the color selection as well as color placement to my model. I was looking around victorian architecture and the way color is placed on wooden elements corresponds with how i am doing it but i wonder if theres too much going on and the detail will be lost.

JO420, I think that's fine, the small gold trims are definitely very Victorian, although I would lighten up the red a bit, it's so dark you can't see any of the larger forms or details.

I did a test with sculpting a creature mesh out of spore.
This is how it looked in spore:
http://www.vitamin3d.com/bilder/Stabilolo2.jpg
and to this i sculpted it:
http://www.vitamin3d.com/bilder/sporetest.jpg
(texture is not changed)
At first i thought it would be a mess to sculpt because its tris only but just for a speedsculpt or a concept it works ok. It needs to be sculpted in a quiet high sdiv to get less messy details though.
These lines on the arms, that look detailing, are there because of the tris and the resulting mess of a meshflow. Another thing is that only the arms, legs and body are one connected mesh. Hands and feets and all other things are just sticked in it meshes
And yeah he has a gun down there. ;)

I'm working on a Ninja Turtle (Donatello) Although I plan on converting the mesh to the others aswell, if all goes to plan.
Here's my base mesh so far:
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7824/basemeshwip.jpg
I haven't worked on a character in ages! In fact, I haven't made a next-gen style game character before. I'm a little bit torn on the direction I should take him. I want to sculpt in very angular forms, sort of like that Yakuza thing somebody posted a while back. However, I think a turtle is a subject that screams for organic shapes.. I'm really keen on the angular forms though, the character designs in the new TMNT cartoons are very angular, so it isn't too far fetched.
More to come I guess.
|Buddy|
08-18-2009, 12:54 AM
The detail on that light map is incredible. Is that baked in?
I think it's lightmap bake and stencil/dynamic shadows in the editor viewport on top of it.
ParoXum
08-18-2009, 01:10 AM
Bitmap, Hawken: It's only lightmaps, a 4096 one *cough*
http://uppix.net/6/3/3/b428b4fcbf26fad725dab4abadee6.jpg
I still have to fix geometry to remove the lighting artifacts (straights lines in the meshes) to be better.
The three directionals are for sun, sky left, sky front, and to keep shadowing inside the house I only enable shadows for the main lights bounces. Mostly the ones which are on the ground. It's far to be a perfect technique but it looks ok :p
thanks ruz and gaganjain I might make a lowpoly and see if I can learn to bake polypaint to texture as I have never done that properly yet.

n88tr: you might want to take a closer look at some real world rifle designs, specifically the breech/bolt size and position. You mentioned that you adjusted the size of the magazine to fit the bullets, but the breech needs to be larger so the shell casings can be ejected as well. Also it should probably be positioned more directly over the magazine since bullets usually feed straight into the chamber and are then pushed forward by the bolt.

Hi, this is my first post here, i've been working with MAX for a long time, as a hobby, so nothing really fancy or anything
I tried my first medium, high poly model based on blizzard's upcoming Diablo 3 game, the Redknuckle Hound, I would like to take it to Zbrush or something after that ( never used Zbrush dhough )
Some C&C would be appriciated

ah yeah seen that now, its probably the specular map seams easily fixed, its for a mod where spirit based aliens destroy part of LA and its an LA ticket machine. Red edge can be fixed thx, Keypads annoying cause it should be in a little hole but I kept it all so low poly that I didnt add the hole, bad idea on my part.

@Electro, that's funny man. It sucks though, it looks like you're going to upstage my turtle. :P
@TumerBoy, When I posted my Base mesh earlier I was tossing up between making the turtle like the new film, or more like the cartoon. I opted for more like the cartoon, and actually a bit more like something you'd see in the new Clone Wars cartoon. I really like that angular look, and I wanted to do something different to what we've already seen in the turtles in 3d.
He is a bit top heavy though, I like the proportions up top though. I might make the legs a bit bigger, I think that will balance it out.

Ashley,
try and play alot with the levels in your maps, its a great start, but its not living up to what it can be. I am a bit confused about what is your spec and what is your diffuse, but
The spec is way too shiney on the bricks, so level those to a much darker shade.
I like some detail in the normalmap, but you might want to control those better, make them softer around the wood or door, and really let the bricks have it!
And yeah, keep an eye on how you place the dirt spots and specialy the scratches and damage. Right now the white frame around the door ahs some really hard damage, wich is done by? sure the damage can be there, but in a light form maybe.
Some more colors maybe? :D
go for it!

Hey Ashley, check this tutorial out:
http://forums.mapcore.net/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=6806&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
It's an easy and quick way of generating normal maps for flat surfaces. Results
are WAY better than using the nvidia plugin like you did.
The final result is alright but I'm concerned about your texture space.
First of all, you could've used a tiling texture for the wall. There's no way a
game will have unique textures for every single wall. Think modular.
That metal plate on the bottom part of the door... Why is it set apart from
the door on the UV? And the scale is off too. Door and plate should be a single
piece of geometry and a single shell on the UV.
What's up with that big yellow thing on the diffuse map? Is it those yellow
strips on the door frame? Should be painted on the door frame then, same thing
as the door.
That thingie by the window got a huge part of the UV. It's gonna feel weird for
sure. The texture resolution difference between them will be too big.
Where's the green box on your UV?
And yeah, everything feels too shiny. You should put such bright specular on just
a few pieces of it, to draw players' attention. Damage feels random and unnatural.
And IMO you should paint the 7 bottom brick rows a different color. Would make it
much more interesting.

Guns look great but character looks a bit plain and out of place.
ferg - another fantastic painting, great colours/brush works.. are you going to be selling any of these at all by chance??
Here's my WIP for the in-game and its textures of this Izmojuki highpoly (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/17188/22WT_hp_final.jpg) I did not long ago.

Does look great there, Adam, texturing does well to compliment the bake. I vote less jpg compression if you make a thread, would definitely love to see more pictures.

i'm posting in here for the first time so i'm hoping i'm doing this correctly.
this is Dauthus Briggan the concept is by Cole Eastburn (i've posted more about him in the sketchbook thread), and i'm currently working on his clothes, they're on SubD 1.

First time posting in this thread. :D So much good work here it feels redundant to post my thing.
But what the hell, here is my WIP:
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q15/spaghettoid_vermicellus/hand_turn2.gif
It's nowhere near done yet. First organic model I am doing seriously. Anything prior was just messing about. I plan to make a lo-poly and bake down the normals. It's based off my hand, which explains why it's so thin and bony. :P
I'd love some input! :D

Some amazing work on this page so far, all looks nice. :)
@ Kodiak
Those segments look great, and very nice texturing style, i think it could benefit from some larger scale wear, and possibly make the bevels harder, and much larger in scale, the pieces/bricks seem to nicely snug together, if you dont mind, here's a paintover:
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8303/kodiakwall.jpg (http://img142.imageshack.us/i/kodiakwall.jpg/)http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/8303/kodiakwall.jpg (http://img196.imageshack.us/i/kodiakwall.jpg/)
NOT MY WALL!
some more color would be cool too.
Just an idea, although i tend to want everything to look like WoW art so feel free to ignore this, heh :)
edit:
err, ignore that hard edge in the middle :D
