Hey guys!

Here's something I did last night. I took a rough sculpt into photoshop and tried to paint it up in a John Singer Sargent oil paint type of a way:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/benburton-1.jpg

It's loosely based on a civil war general named Benjamin Butler. Here's the original doodle and the rough sculpt:

Cheers, Nick.

Heh, I thought i could see some sargenty oranges and whatnot going on there, eitherway it came out fucking rad! I prefer some of the angles on the sketch as he has a more harder general look but its dope all the same!

Very sexy looking rifle Hellmark. I think you could push the diffuse and materials a bit more though. Some of the worn bluing looks a little generic. Almost every edge is worn. Some spots might see less wear and tear. Also, a little material separation would help out a lot. Take a look at the weapon work that is being done over at 3 Point Studios.

http://3pointstudios.com/portfolio_weapons.shtml

As far as weapons go, these are some of the best that I've seen.

yeah it supposed to be bruce willis - BigHoss/MoP. the 3/4 view is a bit off. will grab some reference for that.

I just stared using image planes in zbrush. I have been making up too much stuff of late:/

MoP
07-15-2009, 02:35 PM
Here's a good ref (http://hotcelebrity.name/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/bruce-willis.jpg) for the 3/4 view - basically I think the main issue now is that he has a lot more volume to his cheeks and jaw around his mouth that you've been missing by following the front/side planes only. It's a common problem when just using front/side ref, you don't get a good idea of the volume of the face. Use more reference! :)

Maks

Recently I've been working on trying to improve my SubD modeling skills. For whatever reason I've had this shape in my head so I decided to start working with it and see what happens. I don't think I'd ever try to put it into a game engine or anything like that, but it was fun just to let my brain go and come up with something that wasn't game related for a change.

This is so much damn work, but I'm really glad I got a ton of testing done with basic geometry; making layout and gameplay changes with this amount of detail to worry about would just be nuts.

I was bored today so i wrote this stuff I had in mind. It's a modification of a regular point light system with quadratic decay. Instead of using point lights that have no physical shape I'm using spheres.
It's more expensive of course and I haven't optimized anything yet, plus it only works with specular right now. You can see the diffuse contribution is still pretty dim even near the big ball on the right, but the highlight has the right shape. You can also see that the small light on the left is almost acting like a point, but that the one on the right project a correct specular reflection on the ground.

Not exactly how big the players are compared to the plant Mefix, but right now from the animation. It doesn't look like it would do much damage when it explodes. IMHO

aesir
07-22-2009, 10:44 AM
explosion animation lacks pop. First have it draw in on itself a bit, then have it explode outward MUCH faster. Pieces rapidly slow down and fall to the ground. It's very slow-mo-ish now and has no power in it.

Art-Machine
07-22-2009, 10:52 AM
yes the explosion animation is being approached wrong if this is to be a game model.
Traditional ways to do this in a game is :

1 : Normal mesh is triggered
2 : Very flashy particle effect is used to represent the explosion and 'bits'
3 : While obscured by the explosion effect, the model is swapped for a "post-explosion" version of in this case, the base of the pod.
4 : explosion effect fades and what is left is the shattered stump+goo+whatever.

Basically making the actual mesh explode is going to be more costly than it needs to be. And you can get a much more interesting and dynamic effect using a particle effect system in an engine, and all it costs is whatever 2d images and low res & reused 'gibs' geometry you might also include in the effect.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was having some weird alpha issues in the viewport. I was using Xoliul's shader and whenever two planes overlapped in the viewport I'd have drawing order issues. Was happening even when I switched to standard materials, so maybe I messed up a setting or something..or Max is just being dumb.

Jackwhat, that is gorgeously vibrant. I was looking through some of your work and you have a pretty nice painterly style but also soft -> hard concept style which I don't see too often these days (I've seen a lot of 2D artists scorn upon soft edged brushes, but it's really just knowing how and when to use them, instead of neglect them completely).

Face looks expressionless.... I know its the rig pose so it's supposed to be expressionless but I think beyond that it look like it lacks the ability to make an expression if animated.

I think it needs at the very least eye-lids and maybe also eyebrow ridges and a slight hint at having lips.

I tried Marmoset for the first time and now I believe in love at first sight. Thanks 8Monkey Labs!
(For a comparison you can look at the last segway screenshot. It's exactly the same model and maps, but in Maya)

I dig this, but did you bake any normal maps from a highpoly? The surfaces all seem pretty flat... maybe it's just me.

_Gr9yFox_
07-23-2009, 12:12 PM
Vrav, yeah, the normals were generated from a diffuse map. It's pretty noticeable.

How do I reduce the light's potency in Marmoset Toolbag? Is it just finding/creating new cubemaps? I found out some tweakable parts but didn't get the result I was looking for.

blocked out a rough jacket for him and tightened up the face muscles a little bit more, think I might have him cradling a mignola style skull in one hand with the hanged dude from the comic silhouetted in the moon behind him

You can manually adjust the exposure in the .env(notepad!) file for the sky, but i dont think that gives the best results for whatever reason. I would say just darken your diffuse a bit.

Great stuff going on!!!

kite: Love the sculpting on his face and it looks great with those trademark sloping Mignola shoulders. The ideas you have for the rest of the sculpt sound very cool.

b1ll: Typically sweet, dude! I really like the direction you're taking in terms of stylisation and shapes.

RobG: When you and TF2 collide the results can only be awesome!

Not bad Swizzle, looks to be some type of pilot. Can't really see anything to crit on except the goggles look to be pretty tight on his face. Yet his cheek skin doesn't seem to be taking on a deformation from it.

That's not just "some type of pilot"! That's Lobster Johnson, you ignorant fool! :poly128:

You're right about them not pushing into his face. I meant to do something with that, but I kinda forgot. I only spent about an hour messing with it, though, so it still has a long way to go before I'm done.

nice swizzle - hurry up so i can copy the leather effect onto mine :PAin't much to copy, really. You push a line in, you pull out on either side of it, wrinkles magically appear! I think I'm overdoing them, though; his cap looks more like a rubber swimming cap than leather. I probably ought to ease up on the wrinkles a bit.

while Iīm working on some custom models for tf2 i thought it would be faster to see the tf2-shader already in the max viewport..

this shader is more like a fake of the original tf2 shader but itīs already helping to get an idea what's going on

grab it if you want

DOWNLOAD v0.2 (http://blog.maginot.eu/dl.php?v=A15B01X104o16)

and thats the ramp texture based on the tf2 shading

btw.. no ambient cube yet.. although I donīt need it while texturing

and note to myself: make a switch to enable/disable the light-attenuation (While working Iīm using a light which is connected to this spline-sphere you can see - I rotate the sphere if I want to check how the texture works with diffferent light angles)
AND I've only tested the shader in max8 and max2008 .. but it should work in other versions too.. but canīt guarantee
