hey guys, I keep meaning to do more art and now I'm going to. yay. any feedback, comments or crits are of course welcome.

for now, most of the stuff I put in here is either going to be color studies, env studies, or life drawing studies. if anyone has any suggestions of things to do that's great also, but I want to at least try to have some focus.

here's some stuff from the past couple months, with more to come. the mountains are the most recent. I usually spend around an hour or so per piece.

jackwhat was a big motivation for me starting to do these as well. thanks jack.

did another. pretty much all around unhappy with this, but then again I'm still trying to figure (HA!) out a decent workflow for doing this kinda thing.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdirIWXJdxM/SUmjcjq7QDI/AAAAAAAAAvc/qU-800L8pM0/s400/121708.jpg

do you guys recommend painting in layers when blocking stuff out like this? I'm feelin it out colorwise and in general ways to put it down. this particular ref image had weird lighting that I tried to stick to. ah well. thanks for looking.

bounchfx
12-17-2008, 08:01 PM
did one more for the night.. this time starting with four values, one per layer, then after the base was down i merged and added 2-3 more values. smoothed it after (just used the smudge tool.. would appreciate advice on this). not sure if I prefer the smooth or unsmoothed one of this but it didn't come out too bad this time I dont think.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZdirIWXJdxM/SUm88HqqsxI/AAAAAAAAAvs/Bc6FgEow564/s400/121708_2.jpg

also, my strokes seem to be very wobbly. any advice for this at all or is it just a case of more practice?
next I'm gonna start it the same but paint with like 20-30% opacity and see how that goes. Thanks again!

I really like the work you've done with those environment pieces, especially the graveyard its got a really cool foggy/ethereal quality about it and Your figure paintings are showing a steady improvement.

As for critiques i would say, be more conscientious of where you're lighting is coming from, and If you aren't doing it already, it could help to use a larger size brush when you start out to get forms and lighting blocked in, and then use smaller brushes to fill in the finer details later. Of course, the more you practice the more you will improve, wobbly strokes and all.

Rens

Blue, green, red figures! haha

If your strokes get wobbly, they might be too long for the type of movement you make. You might need to move your hand more instead of making the lines fromout the wrist.

I mostly use layers to stack progress, blocking things out is just one layer for me. (might be a bad habit..)
The last img is a bit weird, you can try to make some changes by using the liquify tool and push things around a bit, really helps to find the forms your looking for. (use a duplicated layer for this)

Good practice pieces, more!

Yea, drawing from the "elbow" is definitely a good habit to develop. This might be easier or harder depending on the size of your tablet, but it will help take the wrinkles out of your strokes. As a side effect, it also helps discourage "preemptive rendering", which i think we all need sometimes.

I really like the grave yard scene, because of the mood lighting you gave it. Nice job

Also the women in green, first thing I noticed was the proportions were really good. It has a nice flow to the drawing as well.

Over all, sweet work man

whew, I hope you guys appreciate this. :) spent more time than any of the other pieces and I had to force myself to stop. looking at it after I noticed I made myself a bit too chubby amongst other things but that's learnings for next time. you can probably tell the areas I didn't render or spend a lot of time on. Oh well. It's 1:30 am and I'm still here at work heh. time to go home and sleeeeeep.

This is a self portrait of me using a picture as reference.

so I obviously have no clue what I'm doing here but jouste inspired me to try something different so I did. didn't spend much time or thought on this whatsoever I just wanted to get a feel of what the flow might be like following his 6 step mini image tut in his sketchbook.

look. I'm sorry. at least I still did art tonight like I promised myself. no, I don't know what it is.

quick blocky in one while I watched groundhog day.

I really need to find a way to do this faster and get an actual pipeline down.

however, this one I didn't spend nearly as much time blocking out with line for proportions, it was just three quick lines (spine, legs, etc) and I put the color on, i'm fairly happy with the proportions for doing it so haphazardly

richkid

looks like you hit the silhouette of your forms pretty solid, but once you start drawing inside the shape you lose sight of the forms that make it up. most of these are lacking a lot of form and anatomy.
i would take a step back and maybe do some hogarth studies. he has a lot of emphasis on exadurating the form of the muscles. in my experience exaduration has been the best way to learn something. take it over the top, then you can always knock it back for more realism

fun stuff man, keep on rockin

Helixx: Thanks :D

richkid: I appreciate the advice. I've heard a lot about hogarth but never actually went and studied his stuff. I'm going to be running through the Stucture of Man DVD's and see what I can learn from that. there's a crapload but it should help. I'm also planning on reading Figure drawing for all it's worth by loomis. thanks again for the crits!

still trying to decide whether i want to use zbrush or mudbox as my main. I dig em both, but dom war is coming soon!

any tips sculpting wise on brushes and whatnot is appreciated. on anatomy too, but I did use a ref image for this and I think it came out pretty darn close :D

bounchfx
03-08-2009, 05:00 PM
did a head without ref for practice sculpting in general. I need to use ref next time for a head. I have SUCH a hard time with lips and especially eyes, and I think STARTING with ref will help with some of those issues. either way.

another apple during lunch. it's the same one, upside down. this time the lights in the room were on.

only thing that annoys me about this that I just noticed is the colors reflected onto the apple don't match the bg color I choose. it's my desk color though. oh well!

Cool fruit studies. The only thing that looks off are the white highlights, they look overpowering. I did a fruit study recently and I was having trouble with those highlights too.

A.Kincade

Your color studies turned out dope. I used to do fruit paintings back when I was in middle school. I really learned a lot about shading and highlighting from those exercises. Good stuff.

Nice Studies Bounch, One thing I noticed (not on your recent post, but the two before) is that the eyes have perspective issues. Take the 'color as a value' character. even though the character is 3/4 view, the eyes look like they would work better for a front view. (hoo I hope I'm making sense)

Anyways, keep it up! I think I'll have to do a head study too sometime soon. :)

bounchfx
03-24-2009, 07:14 PM
yeah, the eyes actually really bother me in the two you mentioned, and the entire proportions of the color as a value one haha, thanks for the feedback! :D

I really like the portrait right before your last post. Something is going on with the highlights on the cheek in your recent one, looks a little bit droopy.

I don't know what your workflow is but I would imagine it's similar to most artists.

1. sketch
2. block in colors
3. blend and add details.

Here's a couple links that might be helpful to you:

http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107217

and that figure drawing dvd at the massive black site would be helpful too I'm sure:

http://media.massiveblack.com/

Anyways, I don't claim to know much, but I know those links are helpful to me :)

Edit: are thes last 4 portraits all the same person?

bounchfx
03-28-2009, 03:21 PM
Thanks keen!
yeah, that's pretty much my workflow, but I always get lost at the block in colors phase. I never know how many to block in, is it only the big shapes, some colors are so hard to see etc. so I'm trying to try new things but blah I always give up and start blending too soon I think. I'm getting better at the sketching and proportion part at least I think. I know that boosting the contrast and levels in the images I use for ref would probably help me see shapes better but for some reason my mind tells me that's cheating, that I need to be able to see it naturally.. so for better or worse I've been doing them without color picking or contrast tweaking.

and yes! the last FIVE actually were all the same person! though you can probably only tell a resemblance in the last three, or perhaps the two before the latest one - the cheek does come across as droopy! so hopefully you see in the latest ones at least better proportion in regards to a likeness.

also thanks for the links. I've read through the bumskee one actually, but I definitely need to read it again and analyze what he does more.

also, I've been really wanting to watch the digital figure drawing massive black video.. I'll probably pick it up because it'll most likely benefit me.

you're doing pretty awesome stuff consistently in your sketchbook too, so it's nice to have these back and forths :)

thanks for the reply!

another one, this time i took caps along the process, maybe someone can give me feedback on it. did this for my cousin. Unfortunately Photoshop didn't want to work with pressure sensitivity so I had to manually adjust the size every time, much less efficient than when the tablet works, bleh. oh well.

quick drawing of a dwarf for the hell of it

apparently never finished or posted this so what the hell:

my first idea for comiccon challenge, Blink in the 50s, that I didn't go with:

the blink i DID go with, but have yet to model:

I think that's all for now. I'm coloring my friend's drawing right now for practice, and I wanted to post it, but I think i've put enough for now, plus it's not done.

Thanks for looking guys! I hope this makes up for my absence.

ok I'm calling it done. time to move on to more stuff.
*I DIDN'T DO THE LINE FOR THIS, ONLY THE COLORING*

https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/17615/Art/commanderColored.png

the drawing itself was done by a friend of mine, Todd Pickens (http://www.shapesandlines.com/), who is a fantastic artist.
I did all the coloring and stuff, so please if you're going to give me any 'good job, dude!'s' please let it be for the coloring, haha!

I thought it was bad ass, so I wanted to color it. It's from a project a couple years ago that changed significantly.
here's some.. steps.. I guess. it's basically flat color and then some shaded:

alright. I figured I should update before it gets too long.

last weekend was the first time I've ever attempted any 'art' art. like, fine art, or art for the sake of being whatever, instead of a study or thing for work, so they're at the bottom here. First is life drawings, then a quick env study, then a portrait of my mom, then that stuff!

the last two, or 'art-y-er' ones were flashes/visions i had as I was getting up a few days before. one happened tuesday, the other wednesday. since I was having trouble thinking of stuff to do for the show I was looking for inspiration anywhere I can get it!

most of these aren't sized down, sorry! :P

Duuude, I'm seeing massive improvement here! Really nice forms. The one of your mom looks really solid. I always hear that it's not a good idea to draw friends and relatives because they will notice the flaws and take it personally, hopefully that isn't the case for you :).

friend asked me to draw him again. started trying to do a caricature then said fuck it.. I gotta try those later. I wanna be able to capture someone with minimal strokes, but damn it's hard, so I did a half hour portrait when I should have been sleeping.

once again i stay up way past my bedtime. I'd really enjoy more than 6 hours of sleep in a given night but that would take some schedule shifting. oy.

this was a quick self portrait, maybe 20 minutes? i have a video for this one too, might upload it. either way, I'm drawing!

Been super busy lately with work. In fact, the game I've been working on was recently announced - DJ Hero 3D (http://media.ds.ign.com/media/077/077741/imgs_1.html). Guitar Hero 6 Wii comes out soon too! I did a couple characters on that as well.

In my spare time outside of work I've been doing a lot of character stuff and sculpting, which I'll be sharing soon, mainly trying to get better haha. In fact, I'm taking a class hosted by Jon Rush/Ancient Pig called Modern Game Character Creation (http://workshops.cgsociety.org/courses/000127/) - I've learned a lot so far and definitely recommend giving it a go when another session is open.

Anyway, enough text, time for some pictures. These are from life drawing sessions over the past few months. Sorry about the quality - phone isn't as great as a scanner, plus I kinda hastily pasted these together :)

Thanks Spacey! the chunky feel is ideally where I would like to take more of my art, as I feel I 'refine' way too much, and it's a side effect of me using photoshop that I need to get away from. the first two you mentioned were done in ArtRage, which I quite like. gotta find enough courage to not try to make everything overdone going forward, haha. Cheers mate, I see that you're comfortzone lies in portrait painting and I see it's really improving : ) But how about you push yourself and make full-figure drawings with focus on hands and feets (barely seen anything of that in your thread), I believe you'll become even better once you can draw the whole human and not only parts of them : )

Youre comin on strong yo!

Whats your workflow at the moment? always similar to the approach you take in your selfportraits?

Try painting with massive chunks of colour/value perhaps? That always makes for a nice change - I've strayed from line for so long as i end up getting bogged down with details and placement from the offset D:

<3

bounchfx
01-13-2011, 10:06 AM
eoq: yeah man, I completely agree. I definitely plan on getting back into the full anatomy very soon, as well as other things. I mainly do portraits because they are relaxing. when I want to learn I'll usually try something different or push a piece further.

nerf bat ninja: thanks dude! glad you like

jackwhat: hey dude! my workflow varies occasionally, but most often it's still: draw rough outline first, capturing likeness of the person or shape, lay down base colors on a layer underneath, block out 3-4 of the shadow colors, then merge the lineart down at a low opacity (sometimes I colorize the line), and then just paint on that. It's crazy how different stuff can look if you keep or clean up the lineart.

lately, I've been trying more of a 'just paint' approach of laying down the colors without line first. this is a bit too haphazard for me, but it's fun and gives me the more paint-y feeling that I desire.it just makes me struggle with proportions more as I have no 'guide' made beforehand (even if that guide is wrong)

here's one I just did this morning - no lines on this, just started painting. it's also not a face! I thought it'd be fun to try something different. maybe 30-40 minutes total?

one thing I noticed I do, is that since I don't have proper anatomy knowledge (or even attempted to decipher it while painting), I mainly just placed the color notes as I saw them - there's no understanding shown of the underlying figure, even though I'm happy with the result, it's not ideal.

Thanks again guys!

really nice renderin on that, fo sure!

I wish youd push the saturation on the colours just a little bit, for the most part all your colours are on the left hand side heading towards grey, which feels just a tad too washed out.

http://www.kindgirls.com/photo2/femjoy/hayden_25881/hayden/12/4/0/

I guess depending on the reference it does kind of work, but saying that, the colours in that picture are a little bit more saturated than yours overall, then you get shit like;

http://www.kindgirls.com/photo2/metart/eufrat_56203/eufrat/16/4/01-2011/

Where theyre way more saturated, but then again i've no idea what your reference is and how fitting this is at all...

Eitherway, fucking ace rendering.

bounchfx
01-25-2011, 11:16 PM
jack: thanks a bunch dude! I agree, I need to learn to take advantage of a full range more often, I'm getting better on doing that with values so far though.

as you mentioned, I do tend to stick closer to what the reference's colors are. I'd ideally like to break away from this, but I'm such a scared puddy tat.

Awesome sketchbook dude! Great seeing your progression over the years, the babe studies are really well done.

A quick way for speed sculpting to eliminate that zphere topo trouble is early on hitting the ReMeshAll then ProjectAll in the subtool tab..it'll remake your mesh with evenly distributed polies in a pinch.

bounchfx
02-08-2011, 09:22 PM
ebagg: Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'll give the remeshAll-ing a go next time, it sounds like tat would help. my biggest problem is the fact that there's pole's / 5 sided's, so hopefully that reduces those.

quick color study tonight, been very unproductive compared to how I should be. I'm not very happy with this nor the fact that there's apparently a huge difference in reds/pinks between my monitors. nooo! :(

I don't consider any of this stuff 'finished' as there's quite a few of these I'd like to do more on, but I figure it doesn't hurt to show.

It's a sketchbook, nothing needs to be finished! :)

Digging the color palettes overall. Studies are getting better and better so just keep at it. You should do a similar approach to the zbrush stuff, do some generic heads to get some routine in constructing them. I think it's important to get the planes down first rather than making them smooth and realistic directly, like a Loomis head.

Thanks for the feedback and advice AimBiZ! Definitely gonna use that as reference for some people sketching and sculpting, I need to get those forms memorized post haste!

did a little environment sketch tonight based off a picture my mom took in new zealand:

another one tonight. I'm really bad at contrast.. might need to work on that a little. all my images always come out super low contrast, I need to work on my color with a greater range of value.

Oooh, I always like seeing cool and warm on white pulled off well.

Your enviro-studies has greater artistic integrity than your previous made up stuff but obviously you're expanding your visual library so it'll be interesting seeing you create new imaginary pieces in the future.
Only crit on the studies is that I'd like to see them more finished/detailed. Right now you have them sort of in a thumbnail state which doesn't put your ability to define to the test.

@Aimbiz - Good call, my biggest problem with doing art right now is I'm 'afraid' to tackle stuff, and recently I've accepted the fact that I really need to stick with stuff from life (at least mainly) to improve my memory and visual library as you've mentioned. I definitely want to take a few further as right now that's my biggest weakness, especially for environment pieces. I gotta put a plan together for myself to follow and really decide what I want to focus on - I love drawing both people and environments so I want to learn both, but at the same time I feel that I should pick just one focus for a little.

Anyway, finally starting to get some free time again, so here's a study from tonight and one from a month or so ago.

I can identify with that. With so many cool things to learn it's easy to spread oneself a bit thin, although for the same medium I think you should give characters and environments equal attention as one strengthens the other. Personally I'm too focused on characters and tend to forget environments for some reason.
Although it depends on if you want to do this professionally and what kind of work you want to get. For concept work I would assume some specialization would help to quicker build up a portfolio. For illustration, particularly in a story-telling sense you'd probably need to show of full narrative images with characters in environments.

It's a good idea though that you're thinking about a focus, will make it easier for people to give advice.

Pretty good values in the new studies. The knight one might be a bit too much on the brighter side. Looking good non the less.
