Right, to save spamming the - what are you working on - thread i'll chuck all my shit in here. Although adding another thread to maintain probably isnt the best idea especially when im tryin to get better. Hah.

I wanna be a concept artist so I'm currently brushing up on as much as I can so hopefully i can be of some use to someone sooner rather than later. For the time being i'll probably just be throwing up studies n the like seeing as im doing them daily with a friend of mine and theyre good shit to do.

Any comments/crits or general advice would help a ton!

Commencing dump of recent work -

I'll probably dump these ere once a week or something! Should probably start working on some portfolio pieces of something like that soon... will be nice to see how much studying is paying off!

As I've said in the WAYWO thread, some really beautiful stuff! :) I really love the way you use the large colour strokes to indicate the shades and general colour.

No critiques, but I would like to say... I wanna see a full rendered painting one day! :P I know it's nice to breeze right through all these paintings, but there's still something to be said for being able to stick with a piece until it's fully rendered and complete. If you wanna be a concept artist, you'll have to be up for and ready to complete work to the art director or whoever's standards. I'm not saying you should start crazy detail rendering every piece, cause I love the large strokes look, but maybe just choose one piece once in a while to detail? :)

And are you going to get back to painting more humans/faces? I'd love to see more of that too.

konstruct; heh cheers dude! I find i have a bigger drive to do studies because i find my personal work such a let down. I compare my work others and it just becomes all the more apparent that i lack the knowledge to push it further. So i find studys more comforting :P

Mezz; I dunno what it is with me and finishing things! If im pushing something fairly far it'll take about 6~ hours to get to a decent standard - fixing mistakes etc - but if the overall feel of the image is right I dont like pumping up the rendering because it feels like a chore - that being said my stuff is really fucking loose and I _have_ to finish some shit up at some point! I'll see what i can do for ya haha, cheers!

For now, boobs + environments - one being more industrial which was a lot harder than organic shapes... at least it is when youre trying to get it all lined up and accurate.

Cheers Slum, im only copying these so hopefully ill of learned something when I come to put it into practice!

More girlies and environments; some of these are not so good, especially the recent ones - i've not been getting enough detail in in an hour and sometimes my hues are a bit off... othertimes theyre accurate. Swings and roundabouts.

More of the same from me, I think im gaining confidence with my environments as they seem to come out a bit more accurate with more detail in the time! I dunno when i'll start to seriously apply some stuff that i've learnt, im kinda happy just doin studies for ~3hours!

Looking amazing as always, you always make me wanna do some painting as well. :)

The environments are indeed starting to look very good, you're getting a lot of very accurate detail with few storkes. The colours are always working out very well.

The female studies are going pretty well, but some areas need more details. The hands especially, they're always very roughed in and could use more detail. Yes, they're a hard area, which is all the more reason to work on them. Overall, a nice feel and I'm seeing improvement :)

Nail on the head, Mezz - Although in the hour I spend on those girls I end up finding it hard to get the proportions and things accurate as a whole let alone juggling detailing hands too! So here, have some hand studies.

Rens, errr... RESPECT?! or I dunno... haha! <3 kindgirls

Cheers bounch! hehe.

Right, photobucket has removed some of my booby pictures so there are now less girly images in this thread (sorry rens). I've slowed up a bit with the digital stuff lately, although i REALLY want to get back to colour studies as its really been bugging me the last few days trying to get my head around it all. So a traditional update for a change with shitty 5-15min self portraits/blind contours and other shit.

Hahah oh hands :) Very good, hand studies always come in handy... no pun intended, I swear. :P

Good stuff, the pencil work has some really nice details and shading. Also, cool concept painting. Just one thing I was wondering about--Did you do something different for the top three paintings? Because certain details and brush strokes don't seem to work as well as they usually do in your paintings and kinda stand out.

Jackwhat
10-20-2008, 07:35 AM
Bit of an empty post for the sake of replying sooner rather than later!

The top three paintings are 15minute paintings, I do 2 of those and 2 1hour ones most days, I end up striving more for colour accuracy rather than details. I seem to spend most of my time trying to figure out colour at the moment, tis a confusing bitch and i want a nice epiphany where it all suddenly makes sense.

However, it's been ingrained in me from my teachers that real life is always better to work from than a picture. Why not find a nice coffee shop or whever to sit at, while waiting for your monitor to finaly arrive, and sketch and sketch all the people there until they start eyeing you funny and get offended and ask you to leave? :)

- Most of those studies were done at the front end of November and since ive kinda not bothered with them. I've kinda hit a point where it feels like if im not doing it all then its not really me. It's served its purpose as a good reference for colours and now ive got to put it all into practice and hopefully pull that shit from my head as and when i need to.

So yeah, im probably going to stick to drawing stuff from my head - straight to colour, as colourising grayscale is a pain in the arse.

So heres some doodles/competition entries/concepts from mid november to now!

hahah I know what you mean... I feel that the more I draw using reference, the better those pics turn out, but the worse anything i try to make from my head is. So I definitely understand... I feel like, for myself anyway, I should go with drawing from reference for what I create, and then, after hopefully I've gathered enough from doing that (understanding this could take a really long amount of time), I could apply it back to my own ideas and really be able to make something incredible.

At least, that's my hope :)

Great studies as usual, and I really like the painting of the guy in the suit!

Unfortunately konstruct ive not been pushing myself enough lately, my motivation died over christmas and ive not been able to get back into the swing of things till now :P

Yar mezz, i actually managed to shock myself with a dire painting from my head, so im more passionate again. It was kind of insulting how bad it was, so ive got to get my arse in gear :P

Hopefully i'll be revived now, Wrath of the lich kings teeth are losing there hold on me and im annoyed at how shit things are so i'll get back to doing this seriously! D:

First a quick dump of some lineart I coloured, which is actually nice to unwind with! Then some really terrible shit from my head which resulted in my motivation and the study that followed.

Awesome update :D I know about that loss of motivation... been dealing with it for a while myself and just starting to slowly kick myself back into gear.

Not much to say, I'm just musing one thing: The paint brush style you used on Chun Li, I really like it, but I wonder about how 'feminine' the style feels. Like I said, it's no big criticism I'm just wondering. It feels a little chunkier and grungier to me, like it would suit a guy better... but at the same time, looking over it, I really like the style... lol
I just think it's something to think about for other paintings :) Please disregard if you like it better this way, lol

Heh, 2 months spent kicking around in wow.... time not well spent, time to gogo paint!

Agreed on the style Mezz, I think it would look better with some better blending here and there!

Heh Marnik! Most are 1hour I think although there are some 15minute ones still? - Some got deleted by photobucket and I didnt bother to replace them or edit my posts :E

Dunno about workflow, I'd say whatever you find most comfortable would be best - If im working from reference I guess a midtone colour and block out a lot of the form, then just start defining the edges with darks and start working lighter. D: shitty explanation there.

Right, im trying to get a portfolio together so I'm actually aiming more towards finished shit lately - Seeing as most of my "work" is study related I cant really show that and show im capable of drawing fantasy/scifi concepts. Hrrr.

Theres a few more sketches/doodles and what not that couple these, but they arent really of any merit besides wasting bandwidth.

I shant post all the backstory to these, because its a wall of text i wont bore you with here.. so pictures;

really like these last two shots jackwhat, the bottom one really took me places.

if i had to say something about the top image with the weird trees; i think the contrast is'nt varied enough between the foreground and back ground, and the tree on the right in the foreground feels a lot more natural than the hero tree on the left with the dude on it.

the left tree almost feels like you "over did it" when compared to the piece as a whole.

either way, very cool stuff and looking forward to seeing more.

I see whatcha getting at jouste! I planned on bringing the detail on the right hand tree upto the same level but now you've said that I'll just keep to tidying the image up as a whole. Also ill try and push the middleground back more, the contrast on those middleground trees is probably too strong overall, maybe ill use that as an excuse to remove some of the strong lines. Cheers man.

Thanks Vrav! the original is better - http://my.opera.com/fierywheel/albums/show.dml?id=769603

This is nice stuff man! I love running across paintings that really inspire - and for me that's tough because I almost never get inspired by other artists work. Usually I just get frustrated.

But this is really cool, and a ton of fun to get a good read on. Being able to walk backwards through someone's painting is a huge joy for me, and a great learning experience.

Keep it up, if you'd please. Would love to see more - and more, of this.

I agree with the others, I remain a huuuuge huuuuge fun of the studies!! They're becoming so remarkable and stunning...

It's nice to see your own work coming along! I know bringing the inspiration from the reference into your own creations has been a struggle for you, but it's great to see the improvement.
I don't mean this to be rude or disheartening, but I feel like the gap between the studies and your own stuff is still rather wide. Are you looking at images of places when you do your own stuff? I know you're trying to bring it all together without working from a picture, but i've come to realize using reference images in all things is not just helpful, it's quite standard even for great artists. It seems only the masters can work without reference.

Once again, I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT am not trying to bring you down, cause I'm reaalllly a huge fan of your paintings, I just love 'em so much I wanna continue seeing improvements! :D

Mezz - Haha, I really agree and I love adversity anyway! I'd much rather hear negative things or have a challenge than it be a walk in the park. I occasionally use reference when im working from imagination, however most of my doodles/environments I dont... Its kinda nice to see what I do and dont have in my head sometimes, although its rather jaring to see how shit I really am haha.

Since "finishing" up some portfolio pieces i applied for jobs but no lucky break, so I've been slacking and contemplating whether or not to learn 3d or go back to basics with 2d stuff. Eitherway ive not really started either yet but im going to tackle the unearthly with every intention of finishing it and finishing well!

So if anyone wants a wannabe concept artist for a 3d team or something im game!

Mezz

Yes, I agree, those hand studies are pretty frickin' amazing :o

I hope you don't give up on doing the 2D concept route. Doing concept art for games is a dream of mine, and if you continue improving and land that job, well, that'll be a lot of inspiration for people like me :)

As for not getting hired, I think your stuff looks really great and pretty, and the technique is there, but I wonder if companies are looking more for some 'thought process'? My understanding of a concept position is that you have to do tons of drawings and revisions of things that may or may not exist, and you need to show that you can come up with lots of things with good variety. Say, designing non-existant weapons that are really neat and also feasible, or creating characters from futuristic or fantasy or whatever universes. The paintings are beautiful, but maybe work on sketches where you pour out and develop on ideas as well?

Well, I hope I'm not just speaking out of my ass here :P I can't say I'm speaking from being in the industry, just what I've gathered from inquiring about being a concept artist myself :) Anyway, good luck! Hope the next time you send out applications you get lots of offers!! :D

Two Listen
09-28-2009, 11:38 AM
Those hand studies are badass man. I don't even bother with hand studies myself, because whenever I try to just "draw a hand", I can't do it for the life of me. I never seem to have terrible issue if it's actually attached to something, but the hand itself has always escaped me. ...but, this is probably normal.

Don't be too bummed about not getting a job, though. You're good at what you do. And if I may suggest, never settle for anything else other than EXACTLY what you're dreaming of. If you want to be a 2D conceptual artist, then if you keep at it, you will be. The potential is there, it is obvious to many and should be obvious to yourself.

What is the point of having dreams if after all that work we deviate and settle for something else...?

Not to mention, all the people worse than you will think they have to move onto something else as well. And like it or not, your art inspires.

Be sure to include with your next job applications a painting of how sad you'd be if you didn't get hired. :)

Amazing. Your sense of colors and light are impressive. It is also clearly here - in the the simple strokes - I think you get the most out of your work. You can try and do larger scaled work and simply finetune your rough strokes. Some of your imagery reminds me of the many rough paintings and thumbnails done by Craig Mullins.

Great work.

Wow, too much attention... this isnt right, fuck off to conte's thread or something yea?

Mezz; Nah, im incredibly stubborn... if you knew what I was like in games and how much of a competive fuck I am ... I just can't quit, i get sleepless if something is bothering me I just have to clear something or prove people wrong. Anime has ingrained that mentality to my core haha. I know i definately need to diversify my content, as is it kinda shows technical ability but nothing much else. I'm pondering on expanding my ArtPG thing a bit with unit types that will be more military/gadget orientated, that way i can theme it how i want but still tackle some technical shit. Still, more than anything I want to work in games, not just as an artist though! I wanna make something awesome! \o/ </essay?>

Two; Nah not bummed really, more demotivated for the time being - till now perhaps?! <3 unearthly. cheers though man <3

The trick I've learned in making perspective that looks good is to work on a small size, take some time to figure out the actual perspective, and then draw in a lot of straight lines that'll besically fill all blank areas. Start with horizon, vanishing point(s), and any other key lines. To make a nice, easy on the eyes persepctive, you'll want to make sure to keep the vanishing points nice and far away from each other, unless you can make a happy one-point perspective. Then, once you put in a bunch of lines to indicate all directions your prespective lines will head at any area on the canvas, lighen that layer and work on top of it with more freedom in sketchy lines.

Or, a more important technique, cheat the perspective :P You'd be amazed how many great-looking layouts that SHOULD be a two-point perspective are cheated as a one-point. Basically, this means that all your horizontal lines will be parallel with the canvas, and just the vanishing lines need to stick to one vanisihing point.

For time-constraints and laziness, I suggest the second! :D

I hope this makes sense... it makes sense in my mind, but I also know what I'm trying to say :P In the event it doesn't, I'll just go ahead and make diagrams of what I mean :P:P

Good luck with Unearthly! Perspective can be a real nasty bitch, but once you get used to the rules, and used to cheating it, it can be dealt with quickly! :)

Edit: Ps, just taking another look at that layout in your post... uhh, it looks really great, nice lines, perspective looks good, how'd you make that one? I hope I wasn't just repeating the obvious.... :p

Cheers pople!

Mezz i pretty much did the picture the way you said haha... I blocked in the initial forms and composition sorta shit then did a fuck ton of lines to a vanishing point and started correcting things.

Its annoying though, cuz I mix things up a lot normally and paint all over the show only now i have to keep things a bit more ordered or else i create more work for myself D: I also periodically go over the image on a new layer adding in details in black line and checking if things are lined up \o/

Finished up minicomp concept (which is gunna get redone to Emil's ironfist specifications) - And a few studys... which i need to finish up. Emil said to make it even better, and hes a tough man to please so I need to get my game face on.

Also some shitty thumbs for the Divinity2 competition over on moddb - Need to design the price of darkness and I'm really not sure of what route to take. I'm thinking puppet master/homunculus type things - or a demon forced into a human body OR a weird ass entity thing that doesnt resemble humanity (prefered). I might just remix what i have and try and make something up of the amalgamation they become, im not good enough at letting go for thumbnailing yet.

Thanks to acapulco for recommeding more awesome artists to study.

I disappoint with THE SAME AMOUNT OF IMAGES. Sorry. Although its more due to wanting to update now rather than... tomorow. Least that means the space between now and updating next will be less - maybe? who knows?!

*kisses emils ironstinkfist*

Cheers KateC - go check out http://artpad.org/ - hes got me beat!

Cheers mezz, i think im improving with environments and its nice cuz im realising my shortcomings really quickly - especially when it comes to view point. I think im getting at handling floor planes and getting my fore/mid/background better.

Now I just need to do some more confined spaces - and stop ripping off Tom Scholes!

Ged

cool concepts, yeah not sure what the brief was but these are really minor things I noticed - how sharp most of the edges look and how flat some of the big surfaces are would be good if there was more detail in the edges of stuff and the surfaces had some large noticable texture/pattern

Rens
02-01-2010, 02:31 AM
thats totaly wang dude!

I dont see no bevels jack.. whats up with that.. i told you man, go with bevel.
Maybe, some real intense light+shadows, the highest you have is still pretty soft,
and rendering in some highlighted spots on edges/materials could really increase alot of hmm factor.

You did great man, lots of work wich might ask stuff from you that you are less familiar with, and all that in a small window of time,
i would not have stand my ground at that on.
highfive!

acapulco thankies dude!

Dongo knock youself out man, if you can find anything you wanna can model from that is! studies are normally 30mins-1hour and doodles are the same - which is what this thread is mostly comprised of T_T

Just like this update... some mindless softbrush doodling... same ole same ole.

Harr, Two Listen - It's definately something I should do more - that roman dude took about 8-10hours to finish with all the minor changes and things i ended up doing. I dunno if you mean an illustration as a whole, background and all haha.

Also im not really one for rendering the fuck out of something, not to say you cant spend time - but if its just adding detail that doesnt help the image as a whole then its probably not for me. I think Jaime Jones is where i wanna be at some day - http://www.artpad.org/

Still, i'll probably spend a good few hours on this masterstudy im doin at the moment, theyre always good to do.

Just what I needed to see, as always your environments especially help some things click for me.

One thing I'd like to see, not that what you paint should in any way be governed by my recommendations, is some more architecture implemented into your landscapes. You've got some basic cityscape type buildings, and then you've got some various landscapes devoid of much if any architecture but the two aren't combined so often.

...I mostly recommend that because it's something I have a terrible difficult time with and it'd help to see how you'd handle painting some more complex buildings and architecture, might fill in some gaps for me. :P

But don't mind me, good seeing your stuff, thanks for your continued posting!

Jackwhat
01-06-2011, 09:01 PM
I really want to find a workflow that works for me in regards to architecture, theres people like thomas pringle/edouard (http://www.edouardcaplain.com/) and then the steambot crew and i think i need to try apeing their workflow a bit although it feels rather forced.

I think the main reason i enjoy the way Tom scholes paints is because how its so organic/abstract in its creation, you can make up little details from nothing and noise... its relaxing and probably a bit too close to masterbation in that its only making me feel good, im not really pushing myself haha.

I'm sure ill work something out thats less rigid than - make shape, lock transparency, make render.

Doodles.

I'm liking you doodles dude, but also that female on the top with a white background - some nice attitude there. And about that image with the two guys (viking?), you could work abut more with the full expression of the image. What are they doing? Dynamic poses are definately an issue with me as im generally thinking more about the design of something than just putting it into action within an illustration. I've been nagged before about breathing more life into my characters and I really agree that I should make them more interesting by giving them poses befitting to their character.

I dig the silhouettes! I think you should avoid having a shield as tall as a person though. Big enough to crouch behind, but still small enough that one could conceivably walk somewhere with it.

(that slight dark glow around your black silhouettes looks cool)

Jackwhat
01-16-2011, 02:16 AM
Cheers!

Im an effect whore, love using subtle glows/overlay shit haha.

I dont really want the shield to be realistic as such... more totally over the top jrpg stylised - im doin it as a mockup character for league of legends and me and a friend wanted the character to be a tank. I also wanted to make a character around a core "thing", which as she will be a meatshield warrior of sorts has ended up being the shield.

Still, any other ideas as to how to make her seem iconic and punchy without a massive shield would be appreciated haha - I just want her to really stand out and feel unique.
