Right, to save spamming the - what are you working on - thread i'll chuck all my shit in here. Although adding another thread to maintain probably isnt the best idea especially when im tryin to get better. Hah.
I wanna be a concept artist so I'm currently brushing up on as much as I can so hopefully i can be of some use to someone sooner rather than later. For the time being i'll probably just be throwing up studies n the like seeing as im doing them daily with a friend of mine and theyre good shit to do.
Any comments/crits or general advice would help a ton!
Commencing dump of recent work -
I'll probably dump these ere once a week or something! Should probably start working on some portfolio pieces of something like that soon... will be nice to see how much studying is paying off!
09-22-2008, 11:33 PM
VERY cool- you make me jealous in the sense that I wish I had the drive to do studies.
*edit- agrees with mezz* Finish something damnit!!
As I've said in the WAYWO thread, some really beautiful stuff! :) I really love the way you use the large colour strokes to indicate the shades and general colour.
No critiques, but I would like to say... I wanna see a full rendered painting one day! :P I know it's nice to breeze right through all these paintings, but there's still something to be said for being able to stick with a piece until it's fully rendered and complete. If you wanna be a concept artist, you'll have to be up for and ready to complete work to the art director or whoever's standards. I'm not saying you should start crazy detail rendering every piece, cause I love the large strokes look, but maybe just choose one piece once in a while to detail? :)
And are you going to get back to painting more humans/faces? I'd love to see more of that too.
09-24-2008, 05:35 PM
konstruct; heh cheers dude! I find i have a bigger drive to do studies because i find my personal work such a let down. I compare my work others and it just becomes all the more apparent that i lack the knowledge to push it further. So i find studys more comforting :P
Mezz; I dunno what it is with me and finishing things! If im pushing something fairly far it'll take about 6~ hours to get to a decent standard - fixing mistakes etc - but if the overall feel of the image is right I dont like pumping up the rendering because it feels like a chore - that being said my stuff is really fucking loose and I _have_ to finish some shit up at some point! I'll see what i can do for ya haha, cheers!
For now, boobs + environments - one being more industrial which was a lot harder than organic shapes... at least it is when youre trying to get it all lined up and accurate.
These are only hour long things, trying to speed up a bit so i should probably be aiming for a bit more finish that these have!
All these are fantastic. I love the color and form. You have some serious skill.
09-30-2008, 06:25 PM
Cheers Slum, im only copying these so hopefully ill of learned something when I come to put it into practice!
More girlies and environments; some of these are not so good, especially the recent ones - i've not been getting enough detail in in an hour and sometimes my hues are a bit off... othertimes theyre accurate. Swings and roundabouts.
09-30-2008, 10:07 PM
DUUUUUDUE, well you already know what I think-. you def are fleshing these out more. I dont mean to fan boy- but shit is HAWT
10-08-2008, 11:12 AM
It feels really odd having people digging this who rock hard! Cheers :E
More of the same from me, I think im gaining confidence with my environments as they seem to come out a bit more accurate with more detail in the time! I dunno when i'll start to seriously apply some stuff that i've learnt, im kinda happy just doin studies for ~3hours!
I still find buildings and things really hard to nail, i cant work out a good workflow D:
Looking amazing as always, you always make me wanna do some painting as well. :)
The environments are indeed starting to look very good, you're getting a lot of very accurate detail with few storkes. The colours are always working out very well.
The female studies are going pretty well, but some areas need more details. The hands especially, they're always very roughed in and could use more detail. Yes, they're a hard area, which is all the more reason to work on them. Overall, a nice feel and I'm seeing improvement :)
haha the girl with the blue background is corinna, even stylized i still recognize some ;)
when its about female references you cannot hide from me :D
10-16-2008, 09:13 AM
I absolutely love the way you use colors man. it gives me drive to improve my own work, and for that, I thank you.
10-17-2008, 02:50 PM
Nail on the head, Mezz - Although in the hour I spend on those girls I end up finding it hard to get the proportions and things accurate as a whole let alone juggling detailing hands too! So here, have some hand studies.
Rens, errr... RESPECT?! or I dunno... haha! <3 kindgirls
Cheers bounch! hehe.
Right, photobucket has removed some of my booby pictures so there are now less girly images in this thread (sorry rens). I've slowed up a bit with the digital stuff lately, although i REALLY want to get back to colour studies as its really been bugging me the last few days trying to get my head around it all. So a traditional update for a change with shitty 5-15min self portraits/blind contours and other shit.
those lines are HOT!! ...yeah that sounded geeky..
anyways, Your brushwork is very effective, cool stuff!
Hahah oh hands :) Very good, hand studies always come in handy... no pun intended, I swear. :P
Good stuff, the pencil work has some really nice details and shading. Also, cool concept painting. Just one thing I was wondering about--Did you do something different for the top three paintings? Because certain details and brush strokes don't seem to work as well as they usually do in your paintings and kinda stand out.
10-20-2008, 07:35 AM
Bit of an empty post for the sake of replying sooner rather than later!
The top three paintings are 15minute paintings, I do 2 of those and 2 1hour ones most days, I end up striving more for colour accuracy rather than details. I seem to spend most of my time trying to figure out colour at the moment, tis a confusing bitch and i want a nice epiphany where it all suddenly makes sense.
- Wanna work my way through all of Bridgman because my anatomy sense sucks so hard, infact i should probably do some drawings from my head soon too so i can see where im really having problems.
10-28-2008, 12:26 PM
Right some recent and not so recent stuff...
My monitor died on me the other day so i'm now drawing in mah sketchbook till i get that fixed up! Practicing some much needed anatomy and shit! I should probably try and work on a portfolio or finished piece at some point but ack, dunno.
Sketchbook stuff is the recent shiz;
11-01-2008, 04:34 PM
Last few days wortha doodles, not quite as motivated as i should be thanks to the delivery company for fucking up and not replacing my monitor on friday! Bastards, i wanna paint!
Most of these are from a fashion book thing i have, i figured that my fashion sense is piss poor as is my knowledge of casual poses - so study study.
Nice sketches :)
However, it's been ingrained in me from my teachers that real life is always better to work from than a picture. Why not find a nice coffee shop or whever to sit at, while waiting for your monitor to finaly arrive, and sketch and sketch all the people there until they start eyeing you funny and get offended and ask you to leave? :)
11-02-2008, 02:07 PM
Yeah granted mezz! i'd probably need some company to do that with so i felt less of a weirdo. That and i live slap bang in the middle of fucking _nowhere_.
I probably should do more still lifes n shit to practice drawing ack i dunno, heres some more of the same for the sake of replying!
lol I usually would do sketches of people on the way home from school or something on the bus in heavy traffic... It's a good time, and great place, cause the people can't get away! Mwahah! But I have to stop working on some of the sketches when they notice me and start getting a freaked-out expression...
Well, you know, if you ever get a chance to sketch some people with other company go for it! :P
11-03-2008, 12:11 AM
Man, dude I come back to this thing like every day haha. I have no idea how to digital paint, but it's amazing to look at your outdoor studies.
12-11-2008, 08:09 PM
Haha mezz, im generally the last person sat to on a full bus so yea, sitting there with my sketchbook out and a perverted looking squint isnt going to help me! hrrrrr, nah... ive been really tempted to draw on the bus but im generally riding on public transpot after about 2 hours sleep so I loose all motivation.
Saidin cheers man!
Fuck me this died in a bout of inactivity. Man, spent 2 weeks without touching my tablet for no particular reason, well aside anime/l4d/ill gripping me no end.
But! im back into the fucking drivers seat... Heres some shit from old > new, some of which ive posted here or there already but ah well!
(Studies first, although some are older/newer than the more finished looking shit)
- Most of those studies were done at the front end of November and since ive kinda not bothered with them. I've kinda hit a point where it feels like if im not doing it all then its not really me. It's served its purpose as a good reference for colours and now ive got to put it all into practice and hopefully pull that shit from my head as and when i need to.
So yeah, im probably going to stick to drawing stuff from my head - straight to colour, as colourising grayscale is a pain in the arse.
So heres some doodles/competition entries/concepts from mid november to now!
12-11-2008, 11:35 PM
great studies man, was awesome to watch someone push themselves like that- those last few were particularly nice. now,- onto monsters and robots!!!
hahah I know what you mean... I feel that the more I draw using reference, the better those pics turn out, but the worse anything i try to make from my head is. So I definitely understand... I feel like, for myself anyway, I should go with drawing from reference for what I create, and then, after hopefully I've gathered enough from doing that (understanding this could take a really long amount of time), I could apply it back to my own ideas and really be able to make something incredible.
At least, that's my hope :)
Great studies as usual, and I really like the painting of the guy in the suit!
01-28-2009, 11:29 AM
Unfortunately konstruct ive not been pushing myself enough lately, my motivation died over christmas and ive not been able to get back into the swing of things till now :P
Yar mezz, i actually managed to shock myself with a dire painting from my head, so im more passionate again. It was kind of insulting how bad it was, so ive got to get my arse in gear :P
Hopefully i'll be revived now, Wrath of the lich kings teeth are losing there hold on me and im annoyed at how shit things are so i'll get back to doing this seriously! D:
First a quick dump of some lineart I coloured, which is actually nice to unwind with! Then some really terrible shit from my head which resulted in my motivation and the study that followed.
01-28-2009, 12:34 PM
awesome stuff jack. I also have yet to get back into the grove after the holiday break. I've been busy as hell but that is certainly no reason not to find time to do some more studies.
pleasure to look at as always
01-28-2009, 10:42 PM
Love that chun-li and indy? I love your paint brushes and loose style (even if you're colouring in the lines!).
Don't let those winter blahs slow you down!
Awesome update :D I know about that loss of motivation... been dealing with it for a while myself and just starting to slowly kick myself back into gear.
Not much to say, I'm just musing one thing: The paint brush style you used on Chun Li, I really like it, but I wonder about how 'feminine' the style feels. Like I said, it's no big criticism I'm just wondering. It feels a little chunkier and grungier to me, like it would suit a guy better... but at the same time, looking over it, I really like the style... lol
I just think it's something to think about for other paintings :) Please disregard if you like it better this way, lol
Always like to see your stuff man!
now get motivated and for fill our needz for artz! :D
01-29-2009, 10:50 AM
Great stuff, I love your studies!
I'm just trying out digital painting for the first time and I'm looking at those and thinking "There's no way he did that in 15 minutes!"
Any tips on a workflow???
Thanks and great work!
03-07-2009, 06:10 AM
Heh, 2 months spent kicking around in wow.... time not well spent, time to gogo paint!
Agreed on the style Mezz, I think it would look better with some better blending here and there!
Heh Marnik! Most are 1hour I think although there are some 15minute ones still? - Some got deleted by photobucket and I didnt bother to replace them or edit my posts :E
Dunno about workflow, I'd say whatever you find most comfortable would be best - If im working from reference I guess a midtone colour and block out a lot of the form, then just start defining the edges with darks and start working lighter. D: shitty explanation there.
Right, im trying to get a portfolio together so I'm actually aiming more towards finished shit lately - Seeing as most of my "work" is study related I cant really show that and show im capable of drawing fantasy/scifi concepts. Hrrr.
Random assorted update of which most have probably been posted here or there already.
- Shame I was too lazy to finish off my war general in time for the deadline, Was busy with stupid shit D:, might get around to tidying it up so that im warmed up to rock shit up in the War!
03-07-2009, 01:00 PM
Hey JackWhat! Love your work. Great energy & style!
I have a question about your studies, are you sampling your colors from your refs or picking and mixing them yourself?
03-07-2009, 07:15 PM
good stuff you got posted in here. Im really liking your environment studied (I need to do more of those myself). also that last tree/mushroom nature creature concept is wicked! really loving that. nicely done...
03-11-2009, 09:43 PM
Awesome SB, love the last tree concept art..Fantastic stuff
04-12-2009, 10:18 AM
Scooby! - I always use my eyes! but i think ive told you that in IRC already - late update is late.
Thankies lemonhead and vikramvr! It took way too long though, although I learnt my lesson on that D:
Not much to update with but an update all the same... fortunately I have done some other things besides the small amount on my Dominance War. I should really be cracking on with that though. eep. Alas, some 25-1hour Colour studies will have to do.
04-16-2009, 08:25 PM
Moreeee studies~ Slowly getting into the habbit of sitting down and doing these as oposed to procrastinating endlessly!
Steps of my blotchy process~
Lineart / anatomy studies~
Awesome painting studies as always!!
Gasp, is that a finished rendered piece I see snuck in there? Loving that scraggly old guy, though I think his beard could be a little more rendered imo.
Am I crazy or is there something blurred about the top two? Like they had a quick blur filter in photoshop put on them? Or maybe I just need my eyes checked? :\
Anyway, good studies all around, keep it up!
And no more procrastinating! (She says as she continues bumming around on Polycount instead of working herself... ahem)
04-17-2009, 06:00 PM
Mezz, oh god i hope not... finished pieces are a taboo around these parts. I thought about adding some more hair to his beard and then i? didnt :< har.
Nah, its not your eyes but it is a softedged brush. (its a squashed circled with blurry left/right parts).
More studies! I'm glad im painting regularly again, and ill probably start up my dominancewar again in a few days too.
04-21-2009, 11:22 AM
DANG- nice metal indeeeed
04-21-2009, 11:41 AM
holy shit dude, fantastic. way to step up your work. I've been out of it the past few weeks myself, gotta get back into a routine.. I have new motivation to do so though so I'll get to it ASAP.
really love what you're doing here, inspiring as always. see you on #md!
05-06-2009, 11:45 AM
Heh, cheers you two! Yeah, i'm finding myself painting a lot more now I'm doing a bit of work as a colourist... I just feel comfortable doing it and its fucking cool!
Heres some assorted shit thats been posted here or there. Some of the sketches are for a forum activity on another board called "ArtPG" where you level up the more you draw based on your character. I thought id be great to start up so I can craft a story and have an insentive to keep posting and leveling up my character.
- Cheers for the comment in the other thread, bounch! <3
05-06-2009, 11:53 AM
Hey man very nice paintings, I enjoyed everyone of them, you characters are really living. Out of curiosity, do you have fine art skills in oil painting before doing this stuff digitally?
great update man, that last piece has a bit of robg vibe to it ;)
05-06-2009, 08:23 PM
Excellent work! I especially love the simplified yet beautiful female paints, the brush work is just amazing!
Keep it up!
05-09-2009, 04:57 AM
Diwan - nope, no fine art skills unfortunately, although its something i'd definately like to do... i really slack with traditional at the moment.
Heh ferg, i'd say im more inspired by www.misterfungi.com (http://www.misterfungi.com) than robg :E
Finished up my ArtPG character thanks to a shit load of comments/crits/paint over help from the apedogs forum, I dont really have any plans to do much more to it as its got to the point where id rather have it as a stepping stone than something to keep revisiting, learnt a lot though so all is good! And a couple of studies too... gunna do some traditional studies - first off sargent, because his colours are fucking rad.
05-09-2009, 05:51 AM
05-09-2009, 11:43 AM
good job, nice values and tones overall
keep it up
05-15-2009, 08:17 PM
Avoiding studies for the time being, trying to flex my imagination muscle so its not so fucking shit and boring. It's probably one of the most frustrating things so far, especially when youre trying to think of something cool and it comes out not so.
Theres a few more sketches/doodles and what not that couple these, but they arent really of any merit besides wasting bandwidth.
I shant post all the backstory to these, because its a wall of text i wont bore you with here.. so pictures;
- and if you are curious, and want to see more on it... go check out the ArtPG section on the link below! Started by the awesome Prometheus.
05-26-2009, 07:30 AM
Ugh, what an unproductive week... Napping and obscure sleeping hours do a good job at killing motivation. Bed at 11am and napping at 11pm is shit!
I really need to take a looser approach to my things, so im stealing - http://www.youtube.com/user/idiotapathy84 - his approach and just tryin to come up with more interesting and crazy things.
05-30-2009, 05:53 PM
Another quick piss about with colour and whatnot and a study to see if i can learn anything new to apply to the next one! Hopefully this will bear fruit of some kind soon!
dude I think you just leveled up with those last two, great work
05-31-2009, 06:56 PM
yeah those last two are on some whole other shit- Your atmospheric perspective is getting REALLY stong.
06-08-2009, 04:24 AM
Cheers you lot! Need to mix up imagination stuff and classical studies moreeeee! so I can actually get around to putting together a proper environment portfolio piece.
More doodling, playing around with my ForeverSpring forest idea, still got plenty of details and focus to add. I think i struggle a bit with tying my atmosphere? or rather foreground/background etc together
Jaime... the amazing man over @ http://www.artpad.org/ recommended a few russian painters so i hunted them down and fapped, heartily. Then did a study.
06-08-2009, 07:41 AM
really like these last two shots jackwhat, the bottom one really took me places.
if i had to say something about the top image with the weird trees; i think the contrast is'nt varied enough between the foreground and back ground, and the tree on the right in the foreground feels a lot more natural than the hero tree on the left with the dude on it.
the left tree almost feels like you "over did it" when compared to the piece as a whole.
either way, very cool stuff and looking forward to seeing more.
Very nice there, the latest painting (boats) is a joy to look at.
06-13-2009, 04:35 AM
I see whatcha getting at jouste! I planned on bringing the detail on the right hand tree upto the same level but now you've said that I'll just keep to tidying the image up as a whole. Also ill try and push the middleground back more, the contrast on those middleground trees is probably too strong overall, maybe ill use that as an excuse to remove some of the strong lines. Cheers man.
Thanks Vrav! the original is better - http://my.opera.com/fierywheel/albums/show.dml?id=769603
Heres a couple of 3 hour studies, a Bouguerea and another levitan... this 2nd one was hard and even with 3 hours I didnt manage to really give it much detail treatment, still learnt a lot so alls good.
06-13-2009, 05:23 AM
wow, very cool man, really liking your brushes =D!
06-13-2009, 08:18 AM
pretty freaking awesome jack, gonna try some master studies myself soon enough, now make more!
your latest paintings are marvelous. the brush strokes/colours are superb
06-17-2009, 01:56 PM
hey jackwhat why dont u post ur paints on mattepainting.org and conceptart.org?
06-17-2009, 03:05 PM
Man, just had to chime in and say I really enjoyed looking at this sketchbook. Really inspirational stuff :)
06-26-2009, 09:22 AM
Peris, if you fancy trying them theyre amongst more awesome stuff in - http://www.sirmikeofmitchell.com/apedogs/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=75
bounch, do itttt! theyre good fun and really interesting if you put in a good few hours.
mat - heh thanks, hopefully i can apply it more to my own stuff!
vofff - if you search my name on CA.org youd find i've got a sketchbook that ive been updating since ~2006 haha. Its more like a minijournal with ramblings n other shit in it though.
Heres some really quick doodles, still relaxing and getting my head together after drinking the last couple of days. Im too much of a lightweight haha.
06-29-2009, 05:51 PM
WOW!! Some of these I can't tell if you painted or not! Really awesome!
I really like the last drawing.
You should write a tutorial on shading for noobs haha.
07-02-2009, 04:52 AM
Beautiful colors, and definitely a fan of the herder.
07-16-2009, 06:32 PM
Reefer haha, cheers man... theres plenty of videos and resources about on shading, i dont need to spout second hand info heh.
Jimmeh, cheers! although, the more i look at it the more I want to push it even more as it doesnt stand out enough :(
Man, my updates are so sparce, really got to get back into my routine! Heres some same old sorta stuff... D:
07-22-2009, 08:40 PM
Some more studies... hopefully ill get back into the loop soon so i can knuckle down on something more enjoyable and presentable.
Zorn Steps for anyone remotely curious;
ah jacky you never fail to entertain.. such a pleasure to check out all your paintings.
07-23-2009, 08:06 AM
bout fuckin time. Pick up the pace, yo! :)
08-14-2009, 06:06 PM
Heh slum, cheers... fuck me i'm neglecting painting a bit at the moment, lost momentum or something... been looking at Sketchup but havent commited myself to it yet - looks fucking useful though.
My plan is to concept a TF2 map by painting over stuff in sketchup so that i can kill 2 birds with one stone.
Finished up some portfolio pages recently so i've finally been emailing places, nuffink yet though!
08-14-2009, 07:24 PM
This is nice stuff man! I love running across paintings that really inspire - and for me that's tough because I almost never get inspired by other artists work. Usually I just get frustrated.
But this is really cool, and a ton of fun to get a good read on. Being able to walk backwards through someone's painting is a huge joy for me, and a great learning experience.
Keep it up, if you'd please. Would love to see more - and more, of this.
08-15-2009, 09:19 PM
your studies are incredible!
08-15-2009, 09:53 PM
Really digging the ladies face (Bouguerea) looks nice!
08-15-2009, 11:59 PM
i know im late to the party, but that Liltih is fucking awesome!
I agree with the others, I remain a huuuuge huuuuge fun of the studies!! They're becoming so remarkable and stunning...
It's nice to see your own work coming along! I know bringing the inspiration from the reference into your own creations has been a struggle for you, but it's great to see the improvement.
I don't mean this to be rude or disheartening, but I feel like the gap between the studies and your own stuff is still rather wide. Are you looking at images of places when you do your own stuff? I know you're trying to bring it all together without working from a picture, but i've come to realize using reference images in all things is not just helpful, it's quite standard even for great artists. It seems only the masters can work without reference.
Once again, I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT am not trying to bring you down, cause I'm reaalllly a huge fan of your paintings, I just love 'em so much I wanna continue seeing improvements! :D
08-17-2009, 09:54 PM
is there any chance i can get a higher res of this pmed to me, and that i can have your permission to get it printed for my girlfriends birthday? i think it's amazing and it is something she'd love :)
09-25-2009, 07:19 AM
Twolisten, conte, sling, d00 - Cheers dudes! Liek loads - now i just need some more fucking motivation, right?
Mezz - Haha, I really agree and I love adversity anyway! I'd much rather hear negative things or have a challenge than it be a walk in the park. I occasionally use reference when im working from imagination, however most of my doodles/environments I dont... Its kinda nice to see what I do and dont have in my head sometimes, although its rather jaring to see how shit I really am haha.
Since "finishing" up some portfolio pieces i applied for jobs but no lucky break, so I've been slacking and contemplating whether or not to learn 3d or go back to basics with 2d stuff. Eitherway ive not really started either yet but im going to tackle the unearthly with every intention of finishing it and finishing well!
So if anyone wants a wannabe concept artist for a 3d team or something im game!
'eres some sketches/doodles/studies - the few I have done.
09-25-2009, 09:59 AM
shit man, i can't believe you didn't get hired right off the bat. Love the hands, i wish I could draw em like that...
09-25-2009, 10:08 AM
bout time for an update! looks good!
Yes, I agree, those hand studies are pretty frickin' amazing :o
I hope you don't give up on doing the 2D concept route. Doing concept art for games is a dream of mine, and if you continue improving and land that job, well, that'll be a lot of inspiration for people like me :)
As for not getting hired, I think your stuff looks really great and pretty, and the technique is there, but I wonder if companies are looking more for some 'thought process'? My understanding of a concept position is that you have to do tons of drawings and revisions of things that may or may not exist, and you need to show that you can come up with lots of things with good variety. Say, designing non-existant weapons that are really neat and also feasible, or creating characters from futuristic or fantasy or whatever universes. The paintings are beautiful, but maybe work on sketches where you pour out and develop on ideas as well?
Well, I hope I'm not just speaking out of my ass here :P I can't say I'm speaking from being in the industry, just what I've gathered from inquiring about being a concept artist myself :) Anyway, good luck! Hope the next time you send out applications you get lots of offers!! :D
09-28-2009, 11:38 AM
Those hand studies are badass man. I don't even bother with hand studies myself, because whenever I try to just "draw a hand", I can't do it for the life of me. I never seem to have terrible issue if it's actually attached to something, but the hand itself has always escaped me. ...but, this is probably normal.
Don't be too bummed about not getting a job, though. You're good at what you do. And if I may suggest, never settle for anything else other than EXACTLY what you're dreaming of. If you want to be a 2D conceptual artist, then if you keep at it, you will be. The potential is there, it is obvious to many and should be obvious to yourself.
What is the point of having dreams if after all that work we deviate and settle for something else...?
Not to mention, all the people worse than you will think they have to move onto something else as well. And like it or not, your art inspires.
Be sure to include with your next job applications a painting of how sad you'd be if you didn't get hired. :)
09-30-2009, 02:58 PM
Amazing. Your sense of colors and light are impressive. It is also clearly here - in the the simple strokes - I think you get the most out of your work. You can try and do larger scaled work and simply finetune your rough strokes. Some of your imagery reminds me of the many rough paintings and thumbnails done by Craig Mullins.

Kinda strange not seeing any alien controllers with flower shaped heads in here :p
Nice work Jackwhat.
10-08-2009, 01:28 PM
Wow, too much attention... this isnt right, fuck off to conte's thread or something yea?
Mezz; Nah, im incredibly stubborn... if you knew what I was like in games and how much of a competive fuck I am ... I just can't quit, i get sleepless if something is bothering me I just have to clear something or prove people wrong. Anime has ingrained that mentality to my core haha. I know i definately need to diversify my content, as is it kinda shows technical ability but nothing much else. I'm pondering on expanding my ArtPG thing a bit with unit types that will be more military/gadget orientated, that way i can theme it how i want but still tackle some technical shit. Still, more than anything I want to work in games, not just as an artist though! I wanna make something awesome! \o/ </essay?>
Two; Nah not bummed really, more demotivated for the time being - till now perhaps?! <3 unearthly. cheers though man <3
Bokaja; too much credit... far too much - http://www.artpad.org/ Jaime Jones, now theres a monster.
Right, started contemplating the unearthly challenge (and cooling down on the WoW playing, but hey, world no.1 druid/druid 2v2 team aint half bad?!)
Working away with bounch so hopefully I can deliver something awesome, although its gunna take a lot of effort to get something to the level it need be. So for now, an hour or so worth of warm up studies to get back in shape?
Cheers people though, its nice to have people who like lookin at what i do, albeit most of it is copying hah.
no sir! imma sticky right here.
10-18-2009, 03:51 PM
Study study and gettin in the groove for the unearthly... Its nice that im workin with bounch so that I dont pussy out and do something easy. That being said, its also nice that im practicing perspective - didnt realise how hard it was too knock out accurate thumbnails and whatnot, especially not when using my normal - doodle shit and fuck about technique.
Guess ill learn on the job per se, fun tiems. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated though haha.
10-18-2009, 05:04 PM
great stuff man, love the colours!
The trick I've learned in making perspective that looks good is to work on a small size, take some time to figure out the actual perspective, and then draw in a lot of straight lines that'll besically fill all blank areas. Start with horizon, vanishing point(s), and any other key lines. To make a nice, easy on the eyes persepctive, you'll want to make sure to keep the vanishing points nice and far away from each other, unless you can make a happy one-point perspective. Then, once you put in a bunch of lines to indicate all directions your prespective lines will head at any area on the canvas, lighen that layer and work on top of it with more freedom in sketchy lines.
Or, a more important technique, cheat the perspective :P You'd be amazed how many great-looking layouts that SHOULD be a two-point perspective are cheated as a one-point. Basically, this means that all your horizontal lines will be parallel with the canvas, and just the vanishing lines need to stick to one vanisihing point.
For time-constraints and laziness, I suggest the second! :D
I hope this makes sense... it makes sense in my mind, but I also know what I'm trying to say :P In the event it doesn't, I'll just go ahead and make diagrams of what I mean :P:P
Good luck with Unearthly! Perspective can be a real nasty bitch, but once you get used to the rules, and used to cheating it, it can be dealt with quickly! :)
Edit: Ps, just taking another look at that layout in your post... uhh, it looks really great, nice lines, perspective looks good, how'd you make that one? I hope I wasn't just repeating the obvious.... :p
10-20-2009, 01:14 PM
Mezz i pretty much did the picture the way you said haha... I blocked in the initial forms and composition sorta shit then did a fuck ton of lines to a vanishing point and started correcting things.
Its annoying though, cuz I mix things up a lot normally and paint all over the show only now i have to keep things a bit more ordered or else i create more work for myself D: I also periodically go over the image on a new layer adding in details in black line and checking if things are lined up \o/
Doin studies again with Sayanora...well at least till MW2 right? - Still, feelin fairly motivated atm, and i definately need to do some practice from my head as thats definately a huge weakness yay.
10-23-2009, 07:44 AM
This sketchbook is turned to 11 on the amp
consistantly, it' really nice work.
10-24-2009, 01:52 AM
As if I'm going to come in here with crits... Just fap fap fap comments.
Awesome studies, dude.
10-25-2009, 05:13 PM
Cheers duders! And fucking right, Willbur... just like my speakers! Cant not have shit pumping, right?
Emil! shit talk to your hearts content if you have any gripes harrrr, or just go to kindgirls.com and fap fo real yo?
MORE STUDIES YES. SAYANORA IS SLACKING WITH HIS, LAWL. Might start tryin to apply some shit to things from my head soon, like ... this coming week soon. yes.
10-26-2009, 12:08 PM
can't put my finger on it, but something's missing in these female studies ;P
very nice nonetheless!
10-29-2009, 03:14 PM
Yea, so about them nipples.... yea, i er... mmm I slack with nipples THERE.
Been doodlin rather than just studies the last few days. Casey offered to collab on an idea that he will maybe model at some point and hes helping out a metric fuck ton. Hopefully by the end of it ill have an interesting design hrrr.
Cheeeeeeeeers casey <3
Man you get stuff done, respect :)
10-29-2009, 09:24 PM
Been doodlin rather than just studies the last few days. Casey offered to collab on an idea that he will maybe model at some point and hes helping out a metric fuck ton. Hopefully by the end of it ill have an interesting design hrrr.
Cheeeeeeeeers casey <3
My pleasure, dude. I'm amped about modeling them when it all kicks off.
11-26-2009, 07:27 AM
One month later and im burnt out on Torchlight and Modern Warfare 2 so I guess that leaves Painting and anime/manga to keep me out of bed! Oh how I love and hate my borderline obsessive compulsive disorder haaaaar.
Hell, I had my card details stolen and the tiny amount in my bank emptied so I cant even be tempted by the steam sales so yea, maybe its karma or something hahaha.
11-26-2009, 08:46 AM
Dude your work is the shit! it rocks!
12-15-2009, 07:32 PM
Cheers flybyknight! And hopefully it can only get better!
Some work I did for an Art test! Had to design a dungeon troll and a mockup screenshot for a contempory battle racing game.
Cool man!! I really like those monster thumbs you have going there :D They're all looking pretty sick.
The screenshot mock-up isn't bad either, but the effects aren't really doing it for me... namely the car lights streak, and the explosion at the end of the road.
Good stuff man, I can definately see some improvements in your work!! Good luck with the art test! :D
12-16-2009, 12:14 AM
you better get that job, hippie!
monsters look good, but I agree the explosion could use some love, as could the back of the car omg wtf bbq tf2?
12-16-2009, 04:02 AM
Love the troll worksheets
12-16-2009, 09:42 AM
Mezz, bounch - Yea, id love the fucking job... it'd be an amazing xmas present! Agreed on the screenshot and as pleased as I am with it i know it has a hell of a lot of problems, I wasnt really sure what to aim for with a mockup screenshot so I went for mood over detail. I think i would of fallen a bit short if i tried to make it super detailed although yes, it could do with some more loving in some places - It was nice to do mind you... taxing haha.
Some quickish studies - realised that i had problems with forms while doing those trolls so wanted to go do some greyscale stuff to hopefully clear up some shit. Next up Leyendecker studies!
12-17-2009, 12:19 AM
01-05-2010, 06:10 PM
Finally plugged the tablet in after the holiday hiatus... time to bust a move?
Doodles and studeh of sorts, lots of weird shit inbound probably, that and finishing off my unearthly concept!
01-12-2010, 02:08 AM
More doodles! Tryin to do a nice portal sorta thing for the DWV Mini over on GA! It probably needs some glowy sparklez to portalify it, that or a total reshuffle... Might do another but I doubt ill have that done prior to the deadline.
Wips of mah portal thingeh;
01-18-2010, 11:25 AM
Finished up minicomp concept (which is gunna get redone to Emil's ironfist specifications) - And a few studys... which i need to finish up. Emil said to make it even better, and hes a tough man to please so I need to get my game face on.
Also some shitty thumbs for the Divinity2 competition over on moddb - Need to design the price of darkness and I'm really not sure of what route to take. I'm thinking puppet master/homunculus type things - or a demon forced into a human body OR a weird ass entity thing that doesnt resemble humanity (prefered). I might just remix what i have and try and make something up of the amalgamation they become, im not good enough at letting go for thumbnailing yet.
Thanks to acapulco for recommeding more awesome artists to study.
01-18-2010, 07:54 PM
nice! i'm digging the last batch a lot, but disappointed that there's only four images. next time I want to see 10! I don't care if it's the same image!
01-18-2010, 08:03 PM
01-18-2010, 09:54 PM
Wow. I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said (and said better), but your colours and atmosphere are amazing. The way you handle temperature is crazy-good.
The improvement...!! It continues...!!!
Keep it up :D Not crits, except that the lava(?) kinda makes me think more of streams of blood actaully... not sure why. I think it's cause it's not indented into the rock surface enough?
I agree! Moar images next time!! :)
01-23-2010, 07:39 PM
I disappoint with THE SAME AMOUNT OF IMAGES. Sorry. Although its more due to wanting to update now rather than... tomorow. Least that means the space between now and updating next will be less - maybe? who knows?!
*kisses emils ironstinkfist*
Cheers KateC - go check out http://artpad.org/ - hes got me beat!
Cheers mezz, i think im improving with environments and its nice cuz im realising my shortcomings really quickly - especially when it comes to view point. I think im getting at handling floor planes and getting my fore/mid/background better.
Now I just need to do some more confined spaces - and stop ripping off Tom Scholes!
01-23-2010, 07:42 PM
Penis head monster is win!
01-27-2010, 04:21 PM
loving all these environment and life drawing paintings... just wonderful man
01-31-2010, 07:13 PM
Emil T_T It wasnt meant to be wang... it needs dewangifying.
Sneeky, cheers dude!
Probably shouldn't post these art tests up so soon but the email is sent so any (welcome) potential crits will be benefit my brainbox only!
Was nice to invest a decent amount of time on these 2 images from supplied 3dbases and i've definately learnt what I find hard, dunno if i learnt anything else... oh, aside how fucking helpful the transform > distort tool is for complex things.
Any crits totally welcome! <3
Oh man, you applying for another concept art job?? Awesome!! Good luck, hope you hear good news back :)
The art test images look good. Dunno what the images you were working off looked like, but these look great, and quite nicely cleaned and rendered!
cool concepts, yeah not sure what the brief was but these are really minor things I noticed - how sharp most of the edges look and how flat some of the big surfaces are would be good if there was more detail in the edges of stuff and the surfaces had some large noticable texture/pattern
thats totaly wang dude!
I dont see no bevels jack.. whats up with that.. i told you man, go with bevel.
Maybe, some real intense light+shadows, the highest you have is still pretty soft,
and rendering in some highlighted spots on edges/materials could really increase alot of hmm factor.
You did great man, lots of work wich might ask stuff from you that you are less familiar with, and all that in a small window of time,
i would not have stand my ground at that on.
02-01-2010, 01:49 PM
I really like the second one. The one after the thumbnails! Nice light!
04-03-2010, 02:44 AM
Mezz Cheers! But no luck this time... got the interview which was a first, cool experience so next time I know what to expect, time to floor them, right?
Ged, rens - yeah, i definately struggle with manmade objects, especially in the texture/detailing area - Still need to fix that shit up.
acapulco thankies dude!
Right, after a fucking long absence due to a borked PC I now has working components so I can paint again! (touch wood)
Some older doodles and this mornings warm up studies and doodles to get back into the swing of things. If anyone wants to do some daily studies/exercises (like on previous pages) add me to msn or something and we can crank some shit out, yes?
(adding stuff on flickr now seeing as photobucket is recompressing images)
04-03-2010, 07:43 AM
cool shit man!
04-03-2010, 11:40 AM
Nice! That first sketch from the last post is particularly disturbing. In a very good way, of course. :D
04-03-2010, 12:27 PM
that fly is the shit!
04-08-2010, 09:17 PM
04-08-2010, 09:23 PM
It's about time you started painting again, you slack piece of turd! :P
If you say your computer was out of action... I'm going to call bullshit. Haha.
04-09-2010, 02:33 PM
love your art
04-09-2010, 02:47 PM
Awesome studies man! I really dig your environments and brushwork. I'd love to pick your brain sometime on your technique. :) Keep it up!
04-09-2010, 11:49 PM
Someone told me that jackwhat guy is a showoff. They were right xD
Welcome back man, good stuff as usual :)
04-10-2010, 03:46 PM
Sounds like fighting talk to me Emil... ya wanna go do you?
Devin dear~ my technique is no mystery it basically revolves around ripping off tom scholes - http://www.youtube.com/user/idiotapathy84 - haha but im always up for chatting shit on msn!
Saya, wait... what? I'm no exhibitionist!
I've no idea what i was thinkin of while doodling these, the 2nd one was close to a weirdass Dinosaur Ambassador at somepoint, which is a topic totally worth revisiting.
04-12-2010, 06:15 PM
Doin some daily studies with Devin! fun warmups~
04-12-2010, 06:41 PM
love the waterfall scene. make it more detailed i want to see how it will turn out:)
04-12-2010, 07:24 PM
I didn't know you made art. I always just assumed you sat around and existed.
04-12-2010, 07:58 PM
damn dude. colors on that last set damn near punched me in the face.
Aw man!! Your stuff keeps getting better :)
It seems to me like all your own concept ideas keep getting more interesting and are showing off your style more and more. Awesome. Keep going, the improvment is showing! :D
04-12-2010, 08:57 PM
Pure win! Way to rock the studies man! Having a blast on these with yah. :)
04-13-2010, 08:03 PM
Hahaha noel, thats too close for comfort!
konstruct, cheers dude... now hopefully i can learn to wield them properly!
Thanks mezzzzzz, once i can properly utilise the stuff ive studied then i will be a proper artwarrior~
DEVIN, you were absent today... i'd have phoned home but lucky for you I dont have your number yet :E
More doodles and some shit Emil wants designing... makes a nice change to be trying my hand at soldier type guys, now to make them fucking awesome.
04-14-2010, 08:01 PM
Your sense of form and anatomy is great, Im really liking this thread, it's full of really solid pieces. Purdy girl drawings too:)
04-15-2010, 02:34 PM
Cheers Enodmi! still gotta get much much better~
Some quick doodles and studies from me, tryin to think abit more about technique and workflow, I want to find something im comfortable with that yields good results D:
04-15-2010, 03:13 PM
Great stuff man! I really like all your experimentation, very inspiring.
What types of brushes are you using? They seem to give you really good results.
04-15-2010, 04:14 PM
Jackwhat, all of this environment stuff is awesome, inspiring, and educational. I learn something everytime i check this thread.
Two listen, look in his signature :p
04-15-2010, 05:20 PM
Looking very nice. Keep up the good work! :)
04-15-2010, 05:43 PM
Two listen, look in his signature :p
Oh snap, I don't have signatures turned on. Didn't see that until I checked his profile. Thanks.
04-16-2010, 12:28 PM
Heh TwoListen - Ya, i also use a mixture of other peoples brushsets and for the last few paintings ive been using other peoples entirely, just to get out of my routine and be forced to experiment a bit more.
SupRore thanks man, hopefully it gets more awesome soon, gotta break this fucking wall down, right.
Dang, cheers dude!
More doodling, been looking at paintings a lot and trying to deconstruct them so.. WE CAN REBUILD THEM.
Also going through http://acreativeuniverse.com/ absorbing the awesome.
(using leventep and anjinanhuts brushsets)
04-22-2010, 12:06 AM
I fucking hate being ill.
But anyway, some doodles now i feel less like death warmed up.
04-24-2010, 06:02 PM
cool man love the first guy
04-25-2010, 01:32 AM
The start of another master study, spent a couple of hours on it so far... some interesting and awesome colours in it!
And some more Unit thumbnails.
04-25-2010, 09:50 AM
darn man how do you do thuse thumbs? love the first guy
04-26-2010, 08:24 PM
!!! Fuckn awesome work!!! Love the hard and soft edges in your work
All of the painting are awesome, just enough detail and not over worked.
04-28-2010, 04:07 AM
marl - solid brush and doodle/erase as you see fit! fun and can be relaxin to boot.
I love you too ENODMI, now update your sketchbook more often!
Cheers ZacD, although thats partly because im so fucking lazy and things dont get "worked" let alone overworked.
More quick doodles, tryin to work shit out still - and my halfassed not as evil as i wanted him to be - gladiator, inspired by moof!
04-28-2010, 01:50 PM
04-30-2010, 10:13 AM
I totally just want to hang out in your landscapes. I know I've already commented on how awesome they are, but the love couldn't be contained in a single reply.
You should record a drawing, it'd be cool to see the process.
05-10-2010, 03:45 AM
Hehe KateC - Still, Tomscholes has be beat by a metric fucktonne! gotta start riffin on some new shit.
ZacD - I've recorded me doing a study but it really isnt that dynamic to see, and recently ive been tryin to mimic other peoples process to try and see what they see a bit. Most notably - http://www.youtube.com/user/idiotapathy84
Some oldish sketchbook pages that i figured id upload... fucking SC2 Beta.
05-13-2010, 08:31 AM
A couple of doodles while i was monged out, gotta start finishin some shit again.
05-13-2010, 12:58 PM
great as always:)
05-22-2010, 08:41 AM
Moar nonsensical doodles... and ive started workin on one of those soldier dudes, the longer i look at it the more it annoys me though.
05-22-2010, 11:01 AM
05-26-2010, 01:37 PM
Values are good, great hand studies.
06-05-2010, 08:35 AM
Mo oh da same~
06-05-2010, 02:41 PM
Sick, dude. Without fail your art reminds me that i need to draw more.
06-07-2010, 08:20 AM
Cheers Suprore mang! I still gotta draw so much more - Starcraft2 beta finally over so ... Moar work?
06-07-2010, 10:08 AM
Very nice colors, no crits from me really. :)
06-07-2010, 11:13 AM
Strong, vibrant work. Keep it coming.
06-20-2010, 08:25 PM
Cheers you two!
Got a fair few batshit crazy doodles kickin around that are more experiments than anything else... guess its just me tryin to get my head around things in a very nonsensical manner - hopefully ill work shit out soon - heres some more samey doodles/studies/whatever for now.
06-20-2010, 08:57 PM
Definitely great work.
I really love the vibrancy i see in your work
07-06-2010, 08:30 AM
Been contemplating concepting a character for League of Legends seeing as I really like their style, figured itd be a good mini project to do. Not got far so far as ive been monging out far too much, so heres a few doodles too!
07-23-2010, 02:50 PM
And thinkin about finishin off last years unearthly haha ¬_¬
07-24-2010, 08:43 PM
Awesome update! I can't believe you never shared that bottom one until now! Irc. Go there!
07-24-2010, 08:48 PM
07-25-2010, 02:49 PM
Really? I'm sure i had posted that unearthly ages ago... somewhere! Cheers though mang.
Doodle and some tinkering with the lassoooooo tool, Tis interestin to use thats for sho.
07-25-2010, 04:54 PM
Hey Jackwhat... great great great Sketchbook thread - You mentioned way back that you were working through Bridgman. What exactly did you mean by that? Using his Constructive Anatomy book to "copy"? or use as reference... if not that book then what book? As for actually working through Bridgman can you let us know your "process" for working through it?
07-26-2010, 10:43 AM
First one stemmed from one of the studies above flipped many times over and the 2nd is from some tinkering in Sai. Inspired by the awesome bumskee~
07-26-2010, 04:54 PM
great new stuff, jack. glad to see you're posting more consistently now :)
I'll try to post something witty or constructive down the line, but for now I'll just mention that i'm a fan :D
07-28-2010, 08:05 PM
really digging the "monster" of your last post... really wanna see that one fleshed out some more!
08-10-2010, 09:16 PM
haha bounch, that didnt last long right? but hey, whats new!
Love you too wake!
static, things around here have a tendency to not get fleshed out, my bad!
Wow, loving that desert!! Really beautiful.
You always seem to have an endless supply of beatiful landscape reference to work from. Where are you getting all these amazing images from?!
08-11-2010, 11:05 AM
Great economy of stroke..you describe so much with so little...I really need to take a hint :)
Mezz, here's the site jack linked me to ages ago
08-11-2010, 01:24 PM
Im stuck for ideas for things to model, so can I steal something and model it?
I am really blown away by your art, how long do you usually spend on each piece?
08-16-2010, 12:57 PM
Dongo knock youself out man, if you can find anything you wanna can model from that is! studies are normally 30mins-1hour and doodles are the same - which is what this thread is mostly comprised of T_T
Just like this update... some mindless softbrush doodling... same ole same ole.
08-16-2010, 01:03 PM
really digging your multi-eyeballed meaty monster. He'd be fun in some action poses :)
08-16-2010, 02:31 PM
Always have loved your soft brush doodles. Something about the soft brush mixed with the grain and the low toned black and whites that just always looked amazing.
08-17-2010, 11:53 AM
More action poses are a must! too much idling!
Cheers medestruit - gotta love filter render noise for that sexy grain look!
Moar doodles and a study... was tryin to apply some tings ya mon~
08-18-2010, 09:35 AM
08-18-2010, 09:50 PM
Really digging the new updates Jack! Nice to see you're still at it these days. I'm totally preaching to the choir here, but I'd love to see you explore a few things beyond the doodle / sketch stage. You know, flex your rendering muscles and all that jazz. Regardless man, keep at it! :)
That doodle of the guy with the wide-brim hat and the freaky red-stitched mouth... its so spooky that it's really awesome!! I like!! :D
08-19-2010, 05:04 PM
Heh, it was more meant to be a ghastly smile... like his real mouth but yea, didnt push it far enough for that to be obvious :E
Some mo doodles yo, one from the concept tag thread~
09-01-2010, 01:33 AM
Hey, great stuff man! Keep it comin'.
And yeah, Bladerunner is awesome. It has such nice cinematography it gives all the artists the itch to do a study from it.)
09-03-2010, 06:44 PM
A quick doodle and a really old character i felt like tryin to make into something more awesome... shes 1 of 3 that i should get around to finishin shortly!
09-09-2010, 02:05 PM
Moar pictures... Big thanks to dev/emil for being fucking awesome.
09-09-2010, 02:27 PM
You know man, if nothing else, you should be really happy with the style you've developed. I'd recognize your stuff anywhere. Your choice of color, your faces, real nice feel to it.
I can only hope I work up the consistency and efficiency you have with your stuff.
09-15-2010, 05:41 AM
hahah, thats such a nice thing to say but hopefully it can only get better!
Been on a massive link ...marathon? of sorts, sifting through loads of asian artists and fuck me, some of their stuff just blows me away - stuff like;
(even more inspiration on my found - http://ffffound.com/home/jackwhat/found/ )
Ima be playin catchup for a while i think.
Heres the continuation of the older piece and a doodle too!
Hey mister Jack, your use of color wins a price.
Hey mister Jack, these images are quite nice.
HEY MISTER JACK, tadadadum, every update is a sur- prriiiseeee!
09-15-2010, 08:50 AM
Keep on! Keep on! Always keep on! I like your stuff, I think mostly because you keep on getting better!
Keep it on !
09-19-2010, 02:13 AM
Heh Cheers! I may finish something at some point acapluco... honest :E
A study prior to a mini challenge over on art order to design a lovecraft creature.
09-19-2010, 09:31 AM
but really, I want to see you do like a 6+ hour finished piece. Come on Jack!
09-23-2010, 11:25 AM
getting better and better!!!
09-23-2010, 12:09 PM
bounch, this piece should end up around that!
09-26-2010, 02:55 PM
More weird doodles and what not
Awesome stuff lately!!!! Seriously, all that studying is really paying off, there has been a great leap in your work lately! Amazing to see. Dare I say... you may even be rendering your pieces more?!
Gotta keep it up, it's really coming together now! :)
Also, I agree with Two Listen, if nothing else, you've really got your own style going now, and that's really amazing for any artist. As soon as I scroll up to your posts in WAYWO, right away I know it's your work. Awesome! :)

Cheers mezz! Cant say ive really been making a concious effort to render more haha, maybe im just getting quicker who knows?! Back in the day i used to want to have my own "look" and its really something else for people to know its me - as long as i dont get stuck in a rut and only have a shitty calling card then its all gooood! Thanks as always.
More studies/revamping old sketches. This geezer will be the 2nd of 3... still gotta finish off the girly character too.

Studies doodles and the like.
On a totally unrelated note, toradora is such a fucking good anime.
10-01-2010, 08:44 AM
:poly114b: getting hardcore!!! Great work!
10-03-2010, 03:40 PM
More doodles and more tinkering... also, panty and stocking with garterbelt = win.
10-05-2010, 09:26 AM
Some archtectural studies... tryin to work out some kind of workflow for this but at the moment it seems incredibly arbitrary... interesting though.
10-05-2010, 10:01 AM
the first one look like a photo!!! good job
Looking good looking good :)
10-06-2010, 11:10 PM
good job. I'm lousy at painting, so one of the ways to improve is to study works like these. Thanks a lot for sharing)
10-07-2010, 12:15 AM
i really like the clear style of the architecture studies!
10-10-2010, 03:50 PM
Vian haha, study the originals or awesome people like jaime jones!
Thanks a bunch people!
Some doodles and a quick study... same old same old!
10-23-2010, 11:10 AM
Some recent tings.
10-23-2010, 05:32 PM
So like. You need to make an image. A HUGE image, that you push really super far, into an awesome, finished masterpiece. You've got the talent, you've spent the time learning and studying. Now it is time for you to show everything that you've got!
...still with the studying alongside that, but you know what I mean, yeah?
Good to see your work as always!
10-25-2010, 03:04 AM
You remind me of why I should be doing more studies.
Nice painterly stuff goin on here... Keep kickin butt!
10-25-2010, 03:08 PM
Awesome work, great lighting on the architectural pieces, and some very imaginative creatures.
10-25-2010, 08:15 PM
Love your work Jackwhat, I've only just began studying and looking at your work inspires me so much, i just wish mine turned out like urs :'(
10-28-2010, 01:27 PM
I like. Do more!
10-29-2010, 03:57 PM
Harr, Two Listen - It's definately something I should do more - that roman dude took about 8-10hours to finish with all the minor changes and things i ended up doing. I dunno if you mean an illustration as a whole, background and all haha.
Also im not really one for rendering the fuck out of something, not to say you cant spend time - but if its just adding detail that doesnt help the image as a whole then its probably not for me. I think Jaime Jones is where i wanna be at some day - http://www.artpad.org/
Still, i'll probably spend a good few hours on this masterstudy im doin at the moment, theyre always good to do.
Selrahc - practice practice practice! s'all it takes <3
Cheers people, luv you acapulco.
10-31-2010, 08:55 AM
amazing work !!awesome stuff man
11-04-2010, 06:39 AM
This is such an amazing sketchbook so far, the level of improvement and quantity of work you have produced is very impressive. Well done! I look forward to seeing more of your work and i hope that you manage to get a job as a concept artist, you definately derserve it!
11-07-2010, 02:30 PM
Cheers dudes! Dunno about the quantity of work as I often ive end up procrastinating for months at a time but hey, im slowly gettin there so maybe ill get something good at some point.
Calling both of these finished. Need to sort out the female partner to go with the geezer but ill get to that soon.

damn jack, the colors on the beach girl are SPOT ON.
stop avoiding hands and feet
12-24-2010, 02:05 PM
Haha, i wasnt quite avoiding her feet, its more than her feet where in the sand and shes on tiptoes almost.
Hands require as much love as faces to really do them justice! So i end up doing a study mainly focusing on colour and ignore finer anatomy shiznit.
Still, i need to do more studies so ive got all this in my head.
Damn man, stop being so extra awesome of late!! :D
The study of the woman is gorgeous, her skin looks so REAL in some areas. Amazing attention to the shading.
Your em... shark man? is looking great too. Love the glossy detail around the mouth.
Lovely landscape studies as usual :)
I also recall seeing some thumbs in the WAYWO thread. Those were looking very interesting too!
Great to see you keeping busy! :) Looking forward to more!
12-27-2010, 11:33 AM
Cheers mezz and yea... figured i needed to do some anatomy studies after doin that weird mouth dude as i've done that pose with that look so many fucking times... so bad. Trying to get a nice workflow for painting landscapes and the like, still not finding something im comfortable with.
Wanted to design a league of legends character again so the thumbs are with that in mind!
12-28-2010, 12:11 PM
Just what I needed to see, as always your environments especially help some things click for me.
One thing I'd like to see, not that what you paint should in any way be governed by my recommendations, is some more architecture implemented into your landscapes. You've got some basic cityscape type buildings, and then you've got some various landscapes devoid of much if any architecture but the two aren't combined so often.
...I mostly recommend that because it's something I have a terrible difficult time with and it'd help to see how you'd handle painting some more complex buildings and architecture, might fill in some gaps for me. :P
But don't mind me, good seeing your stuff, thanks for your continued posting!
01-06-2011, 09:01 PM
I really want to find a workflow that works for me in regards to architecture, theres people like thomas pringle/edouard (http://www.edouardcaplain.com/) and then the steambot crew and i think i need to try apeing their workflow a bit although it feels rather forced.
I think the main reason i enjoy the way Tom scholes paints is because how its so organic/abstract in its creation, you can make up little details from nothing and noise... its relaxing and probably a bit too close to masterbation in that its only making me feel good, im not really pushing myself haha.
I'm sure ill work something out thats less rigid than - make shape, lock transparency, make render.
01-08-2011, 10:26 PM
More stuffs, trying out using layers with the lasso tool for environments, tis interesting.
01-09-2011, 12:14 AM
i love your use of color. i guess it's time for me to start sketching again.
I'm liking you doodles dude, but also that female on the top with a white background - some nice attitude there. And about that image with the two guys (viking?), you could work abut more with the full expression of the image. What are they doing? I belive some exaggeration in both pose and facial expressions would help to answer those questiongs. peaceOut
01-09-2011, 07:52 PM
Dynamic poses are definately an issue with me as im generally thinking more about the design of something than just putting it into action within an illustration. I've been nagged before about breathing more life into my characters and I really agree that I should make them more interesting by giving them poses befitting to their character.
More thumbnail / sketches on the same theme.

Edit; All silouettes added to one post/image.
01-11-2011, 11:17 PM
This one's shaping up to be awesome.
01-12-2011, 04:52 PM
I dig the silhouettes! I think you should avoid having a shield as tall as a person though. Big enough to crouch behind, but still small enough that one could conceivably walk somewhere with it.
(that slight dark glow around your black silhouettes looks cool)
01-16-2011, 02:16 AM
Im an effect whore, love using subtle glows/overlay shit haha.
I dont really want the shield to be realistic as such... more totally over the top jrpg stylised - im doin it as a mockup character for league of legends and me and a friend wanted the character to be a tank. I also wanted to make a character around a core "thing", which as she will be a meatshield warrior of sorts has ended up being the shield.
Still, any other ideas as to how to make her seem iconic and punchy without a massive shield would be appreciated haha - I just want her to really stand out and feel unique.
