saw this posted on digg this morning..

http://www.shapeways.com/

Apparently they use a 3d printer and can have have it to your door in bout 10 days,
they only do white or transparent and mix of both but looks pretty cool...

I don't know a heck of a lot about 3d printing this could be expensive for all I know,
but the results looked pretty damn good.

basically you make you model
convert it to collada or X3D
upload it to there site ...then wait

costs between $50 - $150 roughly

I'm in on the Shapeways beta [it's not hard to get in] - haven't gotten anything printed yet, but I'm working on it. Will be sure and post it up here if I do. From what I've seen, they do very nice work. And soon to have .obj format support. Hooray

Has anyone here gotten a 3D print? I now some people talk all big about getting one and then we never hear about it a gain

Here's a print my buddy got of one of the Satyr Brutes from TQ [model by "coolest-guy-ever-Brian-Parnell AKA modeling_man"]

He's about 5 inches tall. $110 shipped, from 3darttopart.com . Low poly shape resolution intentional.

yeah, I was wondering about the material, is it very fragile?

3DArttoPart is pretty cool (and local to me, if I recall). When I was QA'ing at Maxis / EA, one of the Urbz character modellers had all the main characters from the game printed out and setting around his desk, including the dude walking his pitbull.

I'm in Shapeways and my fat guy quick sketch head was quoted at $10,000! A little steep for me.

Shoot, at that price I'd be carving my own out of soap.
(I wonder how much they are selling the custom bed pan for, from the video...) ;)

Holy craps, that quite a bit off of $50-$150. What do people normally print? Cubes?

Holy Cats! How big were you attempting to get it Bobo? And did you shell it so that it's hollow inside? They charge by the volume of material.

Ya, Bobo was trying to get a full helmet made out of it :P
