Portfolio Threads - Rules and FAQ

After a bit of discussion and special consideration, we’ve decided that the Please check out my portfolio, 2008 (http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=54133) thread isn’t quite working out. The thread is filling up fairly quickly and some folios are slipping under the radar and aren’t getting the attention they deserve.
We’ve decided for those of you who want to pimp your portfolio and are after critique on either the site itself or the content, to once again create a thread in the Pimping and Previews (http://boards.polycount.net/forumdisplay.php?f=42) sub-forum.

When posting your portfolio pimp, it is important that you name your thread correctly to inform other members that it is a portfolio pimp. This will be the official naming convention for all portfolio pimps:
[Portfolio] – forum name/real name, (additional info)
ie. [Portfolio] – caseyjones
ie. [Portfolio] – Emil Mujanovic, Character Artist

In your first post, you should have a link to your site/folio and a brief introduction to state whether you are specifically after critique on the site, critique on the content or both, or whether it’s just a general pimp of your previous/latest work. This way you’ll encourage more helpful replies.

If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to ask and we’ll do our best to clear things up for you.

I'd like to add a note for the first couple of weeks our moderators will be editing the titles of portfolio threads to have the [Portfolio] prefix in it if the original author failed to do so.

However, after the first initial couple of weeks we'll be issuing warning infractions (no actual demerit) to those who failed to make a Portfolio post without reading the rules as a reminder to do so.

I really didn't see how the thread was going to work I'm glad this change came about. Personally I think this is the best way forward. I know I didn't check that specific sticky.

Hopefully now I'll catch a few more, its always good to see what people have to say about portfolios. I know the next one I build will be loads better thanks to everyone else.

I agree, Im still seeing these portfolios everywhere and 'portfolio season' is already long overdue... I also think a subforum would be great to talk about webdesign/html tricks for your portfolio. Besides that it would be a great place for contractors to find you. I get the feeling polycount is behind on developments like these when i compare it to forums like cgsociety or gameartisans.

I don't think subforum is good cause it'd get a lot less attention and imo they need as much attention as anything else. Usually people post their portfolios here to get critique, not to get "discovered".

Kawe: I don't know about that. Personally, my biggest interest at polycount is looking at others portfolios and hearing what members have to say about it. It really helps me focus on how I can improve my own work.

So it might have the opposite effect. For me, I would be able to check out people's portfolios much easier, and probably spend far less time looking at WIP's in the pimping section. When Konstruct hinted towards making a new sub-form I got really excited about it.

That's just me though, anyone else have opinions on this?

hey id like to make it very public that if u donthave a portfolio online and want to have one Google does it for free, and can hold pretty much infinite images and even videos

make a gmail account. "more" and goto "sites" also use Google "docs".. which is essentially a browser based MS office.

google sites is easy to use and has 100mb it hold.
use Docs to create your resume, and u can even post images from your machine into the doc. the doc hold the images on google servers and u can simply copy/paste google doc into google sites and its formated 100% perfect. also u can embed youtube video into your google site, just insert>youtube. copy paste link

there u have it.. youtube bandwidth, reliability and google. all free... all without ANY software (other then a browser app) so reliable
anyway if no one knows this already i felt cheated too bc i didnt find this out till last week.

I thinks its a great idea that we should have a standard noticing the viewers that they are in on a portofolio thread. I think that would also make its more appealing for everyone else if we had this format. Keep up the good work guys!

I haven't updated my website in a long time. I want to learn how to work with illustrator, because I have a different layout style on my mind. I already made a nice illustration at home, but it's a bit messy. It's good to know the rules beforehand though.

I don't know if suggestions are accepted here, but I noticed something that I think might need to change. If you go through P&P, you'll notice the large amount of "Sci-Fi Scene UDK" or something along the lines. I like looking at these, but so many people post these, and it makes it hard to tell what exactly is in the post. It could be a sci-fi city, back allyway, hallway, etc. Perhaps put a little rule saying that sci-fi scenes should be specified as to what they contain?

I also agree with HP, especially if you portfolio doesn't always include art but maybe tech/scripts which are not in the right place under the "pimping and preview".
(I guess a portfolio thread is not only about art, isn't it ?)
