So what's your secret that makes certain colors pop out of the screen so well?

A lot of your work looks like thick physical layers of paint, it's cool.

Gauss do you use photoshop or painter?

gauss

thanks everybody.

MoP: you know that's one of my persistent issues so i'm not going to play it off as a "stylistic choice" /images/graemlins/laugh.gif thanks though, i tend to forget to work on it

Slum: i never really played it, don't tell anyone /images/graemlins/wink.gif

steady: thanks...and yes, those old HL screens have fascinated me since their release

hawken: the girl with the monster has her feet folded under her, not getting slipped a sausage... i think you're reading a bit much into it /images/graemlins/smile.gif

j_bradford, struve, Ferg: yeah, i'd like to get some more sketchbook stuff up too, but it doesn't really exist. most of my sketching is done digitally these days... though i do have a batch from around this time last year for DW2 while hanging out with hawken that i still haven't scanned. i should get that uploaded.

Johny: preciate it. as EQ will tell you, it's all unsharp mask /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

EQ: go away nubz

Zephir62: color is all relative. so if any of it seems to pop, it probably has to do with good combinations of complementary colors, high contrasting colors next to each other, or high saturation next to low. those are most of the tricks i know to get colors to pop, so feel free to clue me in on any others /images/graemlins/smile.gif

tinman: thanks, yeah... i like to work in a heavier style that tends to suggest impasto (surface texture of built-up paint).

Jesse: i use both, but for a long while it's been more photoshop than painter. almost everything in this update is predominantly PS, but many get bounced between the two.

thanks again for the comments everyone, i'll try to keep this thread updated with lots of goodies as much as possible.

It appears your fascination with HL early screens could be match by my own to the saturn version of shemune!

Or that day when I found starfox2 for the snes emulator

Great work! I love how loose you are. That is something I need to get better at. I tend to get too tight too fast and get lost in the individual details rather than the design as a whole.

Always a fan of your stuff, Jack. Every time I see a piece from you it always reminds me that I need to do more 2D. Just to explore with brushes, colour and do more quick paints. I have the same tendencies as BoBo, get too tight too fast.

NICE- the giant polycount head reminds me of the opening of an old ass movie ZARDOZ:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he613E96E3E&feature=related
The opening is awesome, but the rest of the movie is nosebleedingly terrible. (and yes, that is sean connery)

gauss
06-27-2008, 02:20 PM
yes, it was executed as a pretty direct reference to Zardoz.
also how dare you, the entire movie is amazing :)
