OK kids, the original WAYWO thread is big enough now that it is crashing Apache (the web server) and causing the boards to suffer. This is the new one (part 2, the return, the second coming...whatever floats yer boat...). I will leave the old one in place but you will NOT be able to view it in threaded mode.

Carry on, lads, carry on.

So i come back from oblivion to post something and the old thread gets closed on the day I come back. Took me forever to figure out why i couldn't post in the old thread.

anyways. here's what i'm working on.

http://home.mchsi.com/~mule/project/html/journey.html

I'm going to make a fake gameplay video of a game i want to make. Present it at the next Penny Arcade Expo at the pitch your game idea panel. Not sure how i'm going to go about showing a video at it, but i'll worry about that later. PAX is at the end of August so i've got about 6.5 months to do everything. The guy above is going to be the main character. I have more details on the site.

been thinking about giving the main character a weapon....maybe a guitar cause it's going to be music based.....

Seeing as the thread will probably not be allowed to get as big as the old one, I think I'm gonna hold that title for a while. 'Sides, it looks like it took about three years for the old WAYWO thread to get so huge. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

hate to keep posting the same work, but i am pleased that I finally managed to get the hang of painting in zbrush.

The flat texture was done totally in zbrush.

Bit old school looking I think. It will serve as a good base for when I bake it in to a proper uv layout in max.

I am not too concerned about making the shader look perfect in zbrush , because the the final target will prolly be unreal engine,
but as long as the base tex looks good I am happy

Mopster - what are you using to record that audio?

MoP
02-11-2008, 04:21 PM
doc_rob: Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)
It's fairly basic but quite easy to use. Unfortunately my computer just has a built-in sound card, I'm running my Boss GT-3 processor through to the line-in, and it's terrible for recording, it lags behind any audio you play if you're recording at the same time, so I have to manually fix it (and is why a lot of that mp3 sounds slightly out of sync) ... I need to get a proper sound card or external adaptor or something.

I think you have just a little too much lighting info in the diffuse, a good specular map would give a lot more life to it. Still really awesome, though.

Neox
02-11-2008, 06:07 PM
really nice work b1ll, love the facial forms and the texture is looking nice too, not as crisp as you lowrestuff, but also very nice.
but the sideview is looking somewhat strange, the head looks a little to wide.
Also the hair alpha could be a bit softer on the outer edges, right now they are too hard compared to the soft blended ends.
but well yeah wip n shit, so waiting to see the final

qsuprore: i guess thats just a matter of taste, i prefer this kind of texturing, most normalmapped characters tend to look dead because of that "all dynamic lighting" shit, i don't care about dynamic lighting as long as the painted in lighting looks great. It'll do its job in most cases, so why do a unlit diffuse that looks good in some cases but not as good as the prelit in most cases?

good use of spec is still painted in lighting, it's just painted on a map that effects how it responds dynamically. Just taking out the brightest layer of highlights and painting them carefully into spec will have all of the artistry with a lot more believability in 3d space.

Just throw it up here since we got a new thread going. An update on the lich character.. the turns toward bizzare have continued but I think it's working. Still lots of work to be done, he's missing a few accessories(belt, necklace, sword) and he still needs tweaks but so far I'm liking the overall look of it.

Attention Mythic guys! (and others who like tf2)

My first map got really messy really fast because I was still learning (hammer > unrealed). So I started over whynot? This map is loosely based on the keeps from DAoC. I had to cut down on the details in some areas because of framerate issues, and change the layout somewhat because of gameplay issues. But I'm getting ready to duplicate it and make the red base. I'm still toying with how they'll be laid out... they might be able to see each other, and they might be separated by a mountain. Also toying with the idea of breakable doors on the outer wall... not sure yet. This version is a ctf, but I may make a gravelpit-like cp map out of it later.
wide shot of the front:

second floor interior:
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x211/MAUL0r/2keep_b20002.jpg

Still doing some refining and adding details here and there. I plan to put a few props, but nothing too complicated.

C&C welcome

P.S. the map is called "2keep" :P

Working on a own basemesh for my future works, was getting tired of modeling heads from Zspheres or stealing other guys bases haha. Still working on it, some bugs to be fixed, model the rest of the body and fix some more stuff.

Hi-poly model. Came to about 4 million tris and almost killed my PC (fact.). Rendered in Z-Brush (hence lack of perspective, which is something that needs changing...)

Anyone got a link to that post where someone showed how to do realistic renders in 3DS Max using gamma=2 as the crux of the technique?

Addendum:
Stupid me. Quickly found it. For anyone else after it but not sure where its at;

If you’re looking for crits, the ears are a bit low ( the bottom of the ear should line up with the bottom of the nose), neck might be a bit thin from the side and the nose looks a bit narrow towards its tip.

lovely work guys.

have experimented with a oldschool spectrumize shader with a model by Zet, and also applied it as fullscreen post fx to the Sparc luxinia sample game.
The original shader wasnt by me, but I optimized it down from 100+ instructions to 36 or so. I want to further change it to use more colors again, but keeping the "dither" effect.

the model scene is part of a tutorial on shaders/fullscreen effects I will release with the next luxinia version. And shows how different specular/glow stuff could be done for model instances. The tutorials will not feature this effect but look "normal" /images/graemlins/wink.gif

http://crazybutcher.cottages.polycount.com/wip/spectrum/20080214132401_00003.png

for the game one would need to turn the background down for less noise. And more contrast/color intense textures for the spaceships

Holiday weekend in Ontario woot. Decided to try something new. Not too sure what I'm gonna do with this. I'd like to use this as a high poly to bake into a low poly set piece, but its not the most efficient built model, it has some bad sided polys that would need to be fixed.

But its almost done, just adding some extra surface detailing at this point. I have to add some panels, rivets, latches etc. I'm not going to go into the full detail of the swingarm gears, but there are some pistons and the main gear which are important for the look.

It's a SA-2 Guidline SAM launcher. Built by the Russians in the 50's. It saw use in Nam and the cold war etc.

I should've mentioned I saw him on that break pic, made the concept as i remembered him, I guess that I also somewhat used some of the other pics from this gallery as well, there was a guy with SEX on his shirt there too i think so i used that as well, I'm not yet happy with how this guy looks like, in the end he might look a lot diferent than he is now.

I think it would sound nicer if I'd use word modelling sheet instead of concept since the general concept itself is the pic TelekineticFrog posted.

I understand what you were trying to do with the head, but its just too uniformly squashed right now. It looks like you modeled it normally, and then just scaled it down on the y axis. It also doesnt make sense for eyes to not be sphereical. You can mess with that a little for style, but I dont think you can do it as much as you have.

Otherwise I like it.

Thanks all, you too french fry

The statue is for an ingame prop so i had to keep the wings with a rather simple outline, can't spend too many polygons there. Ideally yes, i would have modeled more delicate feathers to match the statue better.

Still all SubD
Unlike in the other statues i modeled the cloth right out of her body this time so i could have that wet/windy look and blurr the seams between cloth and skin in some places.
The cloth falling over her leg and back is still a separate piece.

armanguy: You've got a lot of smoothing errors i would look into fixing, and some of your panels and such came out pretty poorly in the normals map because of it, see how they are all shifted? You should add some more edges in to help the smoothing and rebake.

Brad Pitt in Snatch? Abit too broad jaw no?, or maybe the head is just slightly too wide. I think his chin is slightly less square as well, more rounded at the end.

Definitely Pitt in Snatch, it's close enough to tell that (and the hat gives it away too, heh!).
Martin Henriksson is right though, the jaw is too broad, chin too square and head generally slightly too wide. He was definitely leaner in that movie...

Here's something a bit different for me. A vehicle of my own design. I painted over a 3d model a la Hawkprey. Was really good fun. Think I'm going to try some kind of ostrich/bike machine thing next.

Thanks for the kind words, folks!

Tumerboy: It was supposed to be for the ID of the week challenge at conceptart.org, but I missed the deadline... Ah well, it was a great learning excercise.

Ruz: That's a really good start. Good treatment of the overall forms.

Geezus: That's a nice barrier. The surfaces look good and the rebar's a nice touch.

achmedthesnake: The model was pretty damn detailed. I would have liked to have done more painting, but my perspective drawing skills are sorely lacking. Plus, duplicating 20 rivets around a circle in Maya is much less laborious than painting them all in Photoshop. I used to be a bit snobbish about concepts that used 3d heavily, but when you can't argue with the results that people like El Coro and Hawkprey achieve.

Here's a little animated gif of the photoshop bit:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/har-v1process.gif

And the original thumbs:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/harvesterthumbs.jpg

Hopefully I'll have some stuff on the ostrich/bike(I think it's going to be a police pursuit vehicle) soon. If I can get a handle on my current addiction to The Wire...

Cheers, Nick.

you pushed quite a bit there, judging that you started from a cube !

1. The whole hair thing and the hair line going to the sideburns look kinda goofy, really takes away from the model.
2. The ears are too small.
3. The eyes & sockets generally sink deeper in a human face while the eyebrows and cheeks stick out a bit, yours are flat. (ye you can't hide it, even from that angle :P)

I'd suggest to practice on bold heads, and generally the more work you do, the more you'll want to refine your base, up to the point your base will resemble the shape of a head yet be simple enough to open for a lot of possibilites. (look at zb3 forums and you can see what sort of bases the top artists work with)

Slum, might be worth working on those base forms a couple of levels down.If you sculpt on the higher levels too soon its hard to get good clean strokes.
you could try masking the larger muscle forms also.
I stroke and then smooth out as required and occasionally inflate around masked forms.

Nice ruz. The face turned out great. I would recommend a better lighting setup, and something other than that evil white background. A nice medium gray gradient background works really well. Mix that with a cool 3point light setup and you'd be rocking. here's an awesome example by Bryan Cavett
