Yeah, japh, i'm seeing a lot of messy paint-strokes and nothing that looks convincingly like metal.
If you want painterly armor, reference the very subject of the competition -- the ffxii judges.

The plan is to make a low-poly scene, with the apc, some guns, ruins, propaganda poster and and big ass machine-gun. Off to sleep. (just read the signature above above me about sleep, how cute)
The apc is about ~470 tris.

ruz: that's really slick looking. i'd like to see some more pixel-level details on the clothing as is on the necklace/face/hands. equalize the density
mop: the shadows color is too dark :) no just kidding, actually i haven't even noticed all the things u mentioned. what i did think was that the loops (is that how u call it?) are really nice and clear on his forehead, hair and cheeks (Basically upper head) but get lost in the lower half. maybe overworked the lips area too much? i'd suggest nailing it as simply first than proceed with the detailing.
Great stuff ThatDon and Nick!

Yeah, you just want to make sure it isn't *random*. Color should vary naturally -- skin is thinner around bones, less bloody/red tones. Where is the skin worn from stretching/contact? What color are less lit areas? How does subsurface scattering play into the coloration?
Sharp details shouldn't distrupt the normal map unless placed poorly, they should accent it. You have the base of a good texture, but everything is blurry and soft.

Renaud, thats real nice man.
Not sure the hair will work out, but I'll see.
http://www.splitpoly.com/images/work/ronnie/04.jpg
butt_sahib: Try blending those browns and pinks in a bit, they look very strange at the moment, just random brown dots, what purpose do they serve? The pink dots are even stranger. Get rid of the shading/highlights, that's what the normal map is for. An ao bake works nicely with the normal map though.
The actual skin needs some texture/variation, rough it up a bit, add some nice color variation and then overlay a picture with interesting texture/color information for good measure.
Maybe this helps:

onionhead that looks great, is it aiming for a one off render?
Dont know whether to enter the facade compo, as such Im posting here, still a lot more to do but I think the main design element is done. Apologies for potential dodgy screen colours, I'm swapping between two monitors at the moment, so it looks real dark here.

Yeah, those are awesome. Really dig the style, would make cool T-Shirts.
The idea is awesome, I could totally see this being a game or cartoon. Get to customize your bot and battle the neighborhood kids. Better than pokeman, pokeman is dumb :)
I like the knight in the first best with the mustache, but I think the kid in the second and the pose with the axe is best. Would be cool to see them all in a shot next to each other, like a fighting force.

So much awesome in a single page
Super- Great likeness, can't really thing of anything to crit, but maybe the lips are a bit too 'thin'? Make a thread for him, looking forward to see progress on it
ImSlightlyBored- That's awesome, love the design of the building, but maybe some more work on the speculars, particulary adding some stronger AO and do some handpainted shadows on the diffuse as well, material definition seems a bit messy as of now
MikeD2683- Loving the design, abdomen area seems a bit strange but I guess you'll get around to developing it a bit more later, would love to see it animated
Renardin, assuming you don't plan to use specular maps I'd say you should add some stronger lightning to the bike overall, it looks more like stone than metal as of now.
MadArtist- That looks perfect, the presentation really sells it well, loving the lightning
DN, that looks massively rad, the detail on the internals is amazing, hard to crit but if I had to nitpick I'd say the tire pattern looks a bit too loose
Japhir- I assume you're going for a semi-stylized approach, if not I'd say the anatomy looks a bit wonky, especually the legs
robomaniac, model looks good, but I think(albiet I know little of modelling) that the legs won't deform correct when it's animated.

Not exactly game art, just figured it was time to figure out this whole Wordpress thing, still figuring out the nuances though.

Awesome sculpts Renauld and Rota - very nice styles going on there.
Something I have been working on lately. I really want to get these printed out in 3D and start looking into if it's possible to break into the vinyl toy side of character art.

FAT_CAP: question! how did you create that hair on the first model with the head sliced open or what plug-in did you use, if you did use one? im thinking of making some hair using a a hair modifier and just project it onto some planes for low-poly hair.
FAT_CAP
07-16-2008, 05:22 AM
Garriola83 - The hair on the model is all done just with the Hair and Fur modifier in MAX which is really greate for a built insystem- it's not a realtime model so I had more options open to me than I would at work. Hope this helps!

im likin that aeon flux alot, the proportions are sticking to that animated series, awesome-o
cheers pior/japhir. will try and finish it soon
garriola83 - the problem I feel with your piece is with the muted/almost totally desaturated colours.
Every element has the same tonal value.
I would make the red more vibrant, the blues darker, but less ultramarine( makes stuff look too dirty) - the breast cups are an example of that
perhaps look at each piece in the armour and try to identify what its meant be in terms of metal/plastic etc and focus on making the surface quality more accurate
the waistband for example looks a bit like plastic/plasticine right now
MasteroftheFork - that is scary, like an evil ventriloquists doll
nice rendering but the model needs a lot of work
ironbearxl and GCMP - looks great

garriola83 : what Ruz said, plus you seem to be lacking any ambient occlusion added to your diffuse. Or if it's there, it's too subtle. It would help to clarify what's going on as everything seems a bit busy just now.

Andrew_Morris - Not bad but the eye sockets and nasal cavity need enlarging, some of the detailling around the upper jaw needs smoothing out. Also I would consider removing some of the teeth and maybe fracturing them if this is to be an old skull.

ANDREW: I think it looks great, very nicely modeled. (read on )
GCMP: the reason the eye socket and nasal cavity look huge in your reference image is because of the camera distortion.

use a real light for spec, you don't really get specular highlights from ao alone, its more just to get the subtle shadows.

first bit of organics ever... 540 tris, 1x 256, 1 bit alpha
actually pretty happy with the head textures. not very good at cloth and such. i can never figure out how to make the wrinkles appear hard or where to place them.

StJoris -> I like it! looking very nice!
bitmap -> Awesome bumpmap!
Japhir -> You need more work on face muscles, you have to much uncontrolled brush strokes rigth now. Anyway its goind good!
Racer445 -> Probably you need some more work on general shape of your mesh, try to get into more interesting shape of head, the proportions and shape of nose, mouth. This vertex on the top of head, really must be there? Try to get some more spherical shape on this.

bitmap: are you resizing the channels to fake the chromatic aberration in your scene?
my first attempt at realism... not all textures are there and i plan on adding a few more props...no spec andno normals either.... 2.5 hours into it

Very nice EricV!
here is an update, i stepped down some levels and adjusted the base mesh a little so that the ears are easier to sculpt. crits welcome :D

http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/8489/badasshandyj7.jpg
Japhir: Looking good man, you've improved a lot with each update. I reckon instead of fiddling with this one, start a new one. You'll learn a lot more doing a bunch of 1hr head studies vs endlessy tweaking one head in search of perfection.
Some crits on what you've got now, the lips feel very flat, they lack depth. The nostrils are too big relative to the rest of the nose. His neck is also very short and thin.
ThatDon (http://boards.polycount.net/member.php?u=18789) nice job on Wolverine!

bitmap: are you resizing the channels to fake the chromatic aberration in your scene?
nope.
theres a filter in photoshop called lens correction. its in the distort menu. basicaly serves to take distortion out of pics and remove chromatic aberration. but i use it to add some. makes the pics look more "real" so to speak.

bitmap: Yea I've been doing it manually, so had been wondering if their was a more interactive/previewable way. Tried out the filter and it seems to be exactly that, thanks for the info :)

never done cloth.... i've learned a lot through this process though. shirt is based off a polo shirt i have, kinda shiny. also rounded the top of the head some more.

definitely learned i should uv more stuff fully instead of mirroring.

slowly working up some more weapons to add to my portfolio.

Trying to cut down on the tri count without losing too much shape as of right now. Hopefully ill get this thing unwrapped and textured up by the end of the week :poly129:
Japhir

very nice baxter! you could cut some tris on the back of the blade, where it is flat. just remove the middle edgerow. (and it doesn't really matter in terms of texture space anyways).
thanks a lot Jaco! I think i'll make this one work though, because i put quite a bit of time in the base mesh, so i'll probably try to bake it out to a normal map to learn that process a bit.

Thanks Japhir!, totally brain farted on that part. I was modeling with a symmetrical mindset for texturing and totally forgot that it doesn't matter with back parts like that. Brought it down to 1030 with that removal alone. :)

great sculpt though, the cloth especially is looking pretty rad
Bah, being unemployed means being unfocused for me apparently. Been doing some small graphic design contracts, but had the urge to try model some stuff.
Unfortunately, randomly jumping in to model stuff = sloppy geometry and no concept or focus, I'm just winging it hehe, so it'll be scrapped soon, at least it's giving me some loft practice. I have no idea what's going on here:
