@Odium, thanks bro. I have really been pushing myself to break a lot of really bad habits lately, namely throwing pollys at everything and relying on high res textures where I really should have been taking the time to paint the details properly on a lower res sheet. I am staying away from high poly work untill I am happy with my low spec modeling and have all the kinks ironed out of my rather hap-hazard workflow.

Holi, I don't think a fingerprint simulates wrinkles that well. Try finding another alpha for it. Specular looks fine though a bit too shiny. I'd try to change the ear, it looks weird (I'll just let the pros here explain that one).

Keep it up!

That would be awesome if the normals weren't so messed up on the face. It looks like a giant held him down by it's fingertip for the last few hours.

In fact it was not wrinkles, but "Evil Underskin Moving Maze" Assuming this is wired but I have a decent concept behind this!
It looks like its not clear enough so i will fix that asap.

the same model without the mad detail normal map:

Agreed about the poses, well maybe just the top left, and I really don't like the dark black celtic tats, they look like he got them a day ago. I guess he could have, but he looks old and I think the faded tattoo on his chest looks much better. Otherwise very nicely done

great design syaped!! :)

but i think the mass is a bit unbalanced.. the legs are just too... soft.

the hard edges on the top of the "face-hole" are for my taste a bit too hard

and i would give him some more space for the arm-pads so he can lift his arm a bit more to the front

one thing vahl, the silhouette looks a little flat, try introduicing some ins and outs

SyaPed
05-24-2008, 03:31 PM
@Rollin - Thanks man :) I see what you mean about being unbalanced. I do want him to look top heavy but maybe I've overdone it?

His inner shoulder pad is meant to kinda swivel inside the outer one but your right, I'm sure I'll have to give it a bit more room at the front.

Good point about the face-hole, the hard corners don't really flow with the rest of that area.

@Kio - Thanks :) Aww I like the lamp thing...I see what you mean about it not quite fitting with the rest though.

Working on the low poly. Still needs some work and I forgot a few things like the eyes and the shoulder strap.

http://members.iinet.net.au/~dhoogland/wip/amazon_009.jpg

There are a few glitches with the normal map bake that still need to be worked out as well. The biggest problem is this:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~dhoogland/wip/amazon_screwed%20_normals.jpg

There is no mirrored UV's here and the low poly mesh is all the same smoothing group with no seam.
Anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this?

Vahl you never cease to impress AND amaze me. His fingers are kinda seem flat to me, like they have no normal map. Also (I think this is more personal preference on my part) but his boots are a little funny, mainly the foot/toe area. I don't know, they look a little too soft to me, kinda puffy? Again, personal preference, buy I'd like them better if they were a little more fitted with a more square toe. Anyway, top tier stuff, looking forward to seeing this complete!

If you zoom out a bit and take a look at his overall silhouette... he has a really odd shape to him. He's got a very round mid-section. It makes him look like an egg with limbs. Obviously he's wearing that thick belt around his waist which contributes to his shape. But should that really stop you from getting something more aesthetically pleasing?
You could probably mess around with making his clothing a little more loose and allow them to have more shape as opposed to being cylindrical. His sleeve could billow out at the elbow... same for his pants. They could billow at the knees.
You could probably even take his coat and play around with the width and length of the front and rear flaps.
His head looks long. I would check the proportions on that. And, actually, if you pay close attention to the are behind the ears... the hair doesn't grow into the attachment of the ear into the head. There's actually quite a bit of skin there. Grab ref.
His hands need more work. Grab some reference and really take a look at the structure of the hand. Yours are way too soft. And also, don't skimp out on the hand details. Seriously. You have all this elaborate pattern work everywhere on him... but then you crap ou on the hands. It's like the hands have a seperate low rez texture that you didn't bother with.

I showed this around at work, it's really impressive. Here's some things I heard which I agreed with (which is why I am replying, ha!)

He looks like a "gentlemens assassin"
A pistol would really help sell the era he's in
Those hands...
The sword on his back seems to date him farther back than the era he's suppose to be in
What if his hand dagger mechanism was updated to make it a projectile device that has to be reloaded. Like a mini cross bow mechanism for launching little daggers.
"Do I want to use my last projectile to kill this guy, or save it for close-up assassinations?"For the pistol, I think an ankle/boot pistol would be great. Something small but noticeable so it doesn't overtake his design yet suggests the era at which he's suppose to be in. I also thought the update to the mechanism would be a great idea but you're so far along with it that it may be something put on the back burner.

Overall, I fucking love it. I really REALLY enjoy this character and where you've gone with him.

Joseph Silverman
05-26-2008, 10:16 AM
No need for pistols at all, kills the style of the character. A more modern sword or knife, though -- a rapier or dagger that shows more modern construction, would sell the era perfectly without detracting from the concept.

Also, soul is right about his silhouette. I get what you were going for, this makes sense with the clothing, but the original Altiar had a bit of a superhero stylization to the way his cloak fit. Shaping up the torso a bit would do wonders.

bounchfx
05-26-2008, 10:54 AM
looks awesome vahl, I only really have one 'complaint'?. maybe it's the angle, but the sword doesn't look like it can be pulled out of the sheath due to the shape of the sword. as I said though, might just be the viewing angle. Great work!

I'm talking more something along the lines of a NARC pistol that can be concealed in your fist. REALLY tiny. Just something to suggest that era as only swords are a bit off setting IMO.

Having one of these in my room at the moment, I'll give you a few crtis,

There is a little thing at the front, I suppose its for releasing the barrel, that is not there in real life. In reality, it is a much smaller button thing, that sits flush with the receiver group and you push sideways to release the barrel. Also, your sling swivels, both front and rear are too thin, they are much thicker in real life. Also, the front slin swivel should be further down the front of the receiver group. I am not sure though, because my weapon doesnt have a picatinny rail like that one, it has the mk1 standard optical sight. Other than that, pretty spot on, although the trigger looks a little square.

Oh, and I am guessing that it is purely for a FPS, but the rear sling swivel, which is attached to the trigger mech retaining pin is put in backwards on your weapon. In reality, it is on the other side (as the weapon is sling so it sits on your right side.)

Oh, and that is a left handed weapon. On a right handed on, the ejection port on the left side is covered up with a piece of plastic, and the one on the right side is opened up.

Stupid little doodle thing trying out my style on concept art and just comin up with concepts. Majorly disappointed that I messed up perspective a few times, wasn't thinking.

results? Style doesnt really work for full on environment concepts (works better for individual prop artwork, scale kills all detailing) and I really should have planned an enviro space before just drawing ; /

GCMp, that looks like one expensive bench for whats going on in it...

Even if a bench is going to use unique Uvs like that, it's probably worth while modeling it in high res and cranking up the detail on it, good base so far, but probably achieve roughly the same result as a tilable texture.

Cheers for the kind words, folks!

pior: I used the 'Thick Pencil' brush from Natural Brushes 2 for these. I turned off opacity and set stroke width to pen pressure. Give it a go!

Davision3d + Ged: They're about 90 percent 3d. I thought if it was good enough for Hawkprey then I'd give it a go. They're not that time consuming either. The yellow one, for instance, took about 3 hours in Maya (with a bit more for simple renders) and then another hour or two in photoshop for all 3 views. The blue fella took a bit longer (but mainly due to Maya refusing to open files and crashing to desktop...:()

But, you got me thinking maybe a whole body would be nice to do in
the not so distant future.

Hey all, new here to polycount but I have been lurking for a while. I've been wanting to post my wips on here for a while now and today I'm actually going to do it. First off here is my first piece, a futuristic storage capsule inspired by Quake Wars: I'm looking for some honest feedback so please be brutal, thanks :icon60:

thats pretty cool storage unit. the thing i want to see though is the orange part pushed in more. its still very cylinder to me and if u played with the orange part a little more you could prob make it look more dynamic.

definitely has the things to come out great, bzt what i really don't like are those pores, in first place because the are totally uniform and a head never has only bumps going inwards, so if you're heading for a realstic skin, yoz might want to do more research.
But basicly i don't like them because they are destroying the sculptural feel you achieved on the hair, and personally i'd like to see that in the face too.

Frozan
06-07-2008, 02:52 AM
the pores on the nose area seem a little large.

Neox
06-07-2008, 03:02 AM
can definitely happen and pores on the nose are pretty much always larger then on the rest of the face, not considering acne though ^^

some 3d scans to help you for the realistic parts

be brutal ?! ok here we go promise not to be offended ! :)

- the uv map
big time wastage of space i see 4 circular uv shells 2 having horizontal strips stick out i looked at the model for really long and i cant figure out where the texture for that actually goes you should really only have 2 circular uv shells on your map form what i can see of the model ! ... and seeing how top and bottom bit of the barrel are identical ( normal map) i don't even understand why they are not mapped on top of each other and than get twice as much resolution !

- the defuse map
seams fine but i am not a fan of this render clouds ish shade difference that goes all over luckily you cant actually see that on the model very obviously so i am gonna let that slide.

- the normal map/highpoly model
i can see you actually made a highpoly usually thats the way to go but you don't see any large scale geometry in the normal map because there is hardly any normal difference between your low and high model .... really the normal map looks as if it was made with that nvidia filter.
also all the rims going around the cylinder have this maya envelope normalmap render artifact where its not a straight line how it is on the highpoly model you should either render your normal map with a different tool or fix it in photoshop and remove those waves from the rim.

- the spec mask
it looks exactly the defuse map to me except you masked out the glowy bits ... why ? doesn't the glow come through some sort of plastic or glas ? last time i checked those kind of materials have a pretty sharp specular reflection because these kind of surface shave a very NONE rough surface ! so id suggest make the spec mask alot more contrasty add detail and scratches to it that arnt in the defuse map already and don't mask away the glowy bits... but really this thing just seams to waste texture memory if you intent to use this in lets say unreal engine 3 id say use the defuse map with contrast adjustment inside the shader as the spec mask ... and save yourself a whoel texture layer.

- the glow map
the map itself is fine i guess it could be of a smaller resolution than the other maps to save texture memory and also add a bit of fake bloom while doing so but what bugs me is your shot of how all the texture maps are combined it doesn't look bright at all this is of course completely depending on what engine / tool you use but for presentation purposes id say in maya hook that map into the incandescence slot :)

-the lowpoly model
when using normal maps you should spend all the geometry in what defines the silhouette of your model because thats the only kind of geometry a normal map cant fake ! so all the polys on the top and bottom bits of your barrel should have been with a similar strength in the highpoly model and than be rendered into the normal map. if you have polys to spare ( and really no one ever does) id say put em into the rims which is hard to render out artifact less into a normal map in maya anyway and it DOES add visibly to the silhouette of the model

hope this helps with the next model :)
