View Full Version : [P&P] - What are you working on? 2008 Edition
Well we have no horizon in this world so the clouds would defintely not stretch perspectivly as they do on our world.
The goal is not to have a realistic, but a good looking sky with nice colors and simple fluffy a little stylized clouds.
but i agree on the size and i'll try to bend the uv space in the shader, maybe this works for having more individual sized clouds.
right now there are only 6 clouds on that sky which are heavily modded by the shader. the whole skydome consists of only a few very small texturepages, 1 512 for the solid clouds in foreground, 1 256 for the light clouds in background, and 2 maps for masking and distortion, it's not just one big texture, as one big texture would be less dynamic

Yeah, I had made this pose -> http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s107/aquauzi/MarcusPosedWIPSS1.jpg <- and I like it more, but it didn't look practical because of the feet and the way he was resting on the edge. If he were really riding it, his feet would be resting on (or near) those green pipes in back because they're flat, so I did that, and that raised the body, and I couldn't get the arm down on him without stretching

still very wip but making progress. I am thinking of vertex painting the walls and then doing a RTT instead of decals for the grime over the base textures on the walls. The older props will get a touch up to there textures before the end to bring it all together and make it more consistent.

looks great vitor! I drew you a little paintover with more common head proportions. right now he seems to have squashed chin and small nose. the ears are too small too. the back of the head seems too big aswel, the ears aren't dead center.

Your sculpt is expressive, inspirational and just badass :)
The texture doesnt' do justice to the highpoly however, skin has yellow tones and different redness level to indicate the blood vessels underneath and the depth of skin. teeth have specularity even when they're yellow etc, but I'm not a texture artist and I realize this is work in progress.

Brilliant as always, you definetly have my vote :)

@vitor's head mesh : I like the receding chin etc. but the basic proportions of the skull are off, as is the ear position. Japhir pretty much nailed it with his paintover IMO. The stereotypical heroic jawline isn't a necessity though.

i don´t say the paintovers are bad.. i say they are boring bc they are the default-generic head.. i always knew if a head is made by vitor bc of his style.. this is why art is never the perfect line.. bc the perfect line is boring
so it´s nothing against you :) the paintover itself is very good imo
and the comparison could help newcomers a lot!
i just don´t want vitor to make generic heads ;)

Thanks a lot for the critics/comments dudes. Indeed, I have a problem with proportions, that is what I'm trying to fight with this last series of heads. That and make then more natural and soft. I think I spent too much time doing quick Zbrush doodles without caring to study a single reference image and now I'm paying the bill. On the other hand, I hate generic, it is boring and dull, but a realistic proportioned face doesn't necessarily needs to be boring. Well, wish me luck on the next one and hope I can count with you guys to help me.

my attempt at a pokemon. Any suggestions on how to drop polycount or anything?
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee3/Mtg_Kirin/1-10.jpg
you could make the eyes sprite planes of 2 polygons (as seen in most nintendo games). The smaller feet could be less detailed also, just cubes or intersecting billboards of 4 polygons. Polygons used in your lower sections could be removed, making the smaller balls into diamond shaped cubes, then giving you greater resources to add detail to the shape of the head section.
This is where you are lacking detail the most and it's showing. Because you are applying the same quota as the smaller details, which will actually take up less pixels on-screen therefore requiring less detail.

Nah, go for it japh. They work much better than you would expect -- check out Company of Heroes or Age of Empires 3. Just gotta be smart about what details you put into the normal map, and maybe tweak it by hand a bit ala pior (http://www.pioroberson.com/images/3d_pior_bobodemon.jpg) :)

Hi there, no issues :P It's called WED Clay, a special mix of natural clay made by some Disney folks back in the day. It handles pretty much like grey natural clay, except that it stiffens instead of drying. You can keep a sculpt up for weeks!

Here is what has kept me away from my computer. Thank god I graduate in a week. This was for a facial expression class. It is regular gray clay kept moist and resculpted over the course of 6 weeks. In between sculpting sessions we would draw the same expressions. This was the second class I had that was sculpture and drawing combined. The first one was Figure based.

ScoobyDoofus, that looks great, I love the style of it. I would suggest pulling down the outside corners of her eyes for a more natural look. They're a little high up, right now.

japhir in all your textures you seem to lack any color, for example this skin texture is full of white smudges that dont contribute to any form/shape at all , throw in some reds , even dark greens , purples etc skin has a shitload of subtle coloring to be made believable. its just you seem to be making the same mistake over and over . keep going tho !
Joseph Silverman
05-13-2008, 11:51 AM
Johny's right, japh. I really like your texturing, but it hasn't improved much in a while, you're way too conservative with hues and it gives an overly painterly/cartoony look to everything you texture. Start to play a lot more with colors and more realistic rendering -- you've got planes and lighting down, dive in to the rest of it.
Anyway, you/jaco/slaught are inspiring me, may try and enter that contest...

very clean/nice style style Vahl ! This head has a ton of character :)
really nive work vahl, very clean style. Not a a fan of the ears though, they are pretty off shaped and look kinda rushed, also whats that edge under the earlobe? And i'd lift the lip a bit up where harelip operation scar is, right now it just looks like decoration but the side with the scar is always a little bit higher http://www.jobeaufoix.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/joaquin_phoenix.jpg there may be better reference but you can see the slight difference betwenn the sides.
Also are you going to alpha that collar round? If not i'd definitely add the few extra polies to round it up a bit it really doesn't serve the clean style and closeup ability of the face.

SEKNeox : the ears aren't touched at all yet, the edges are just badly triangulated edges since that export was just to check the textures in the engine, as for the collar thing, everything will be covered by a cloak/hood so I didn't want to waste polygons on that part.
I'll fix the lip and stuff, good call on that, also need to push the colors more because the shader/lighting tends to wash everything out right now :(
Funky bunnies : looking cool dude, is that rendered/textured in zbrush ? I'm still at the photoshop only age on the texturing side of things :p

Japh, the forms are awesome, so far. Let's see more color in the body, if you really want to push for realism. Blues, greens, reds, yellows -- get some ref and go wild with it, even if you don't manage to do anything you really like it'll be good practice.
jaco, cool sculpt, digging the style.

That reminds me
Ben Mathis wrote a tutorial AGES ago (I think its on his site and he also says its his first character tut) about painting body textures, and one useful trick was to R, G, B cloud channels and combine them in to a colour variation all over. Erm, hard to explain, Ill just now dig it up.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/process/character_tutorial/character_process_page_5.htm
Thats the technique (accredited to 'harlequin'). Its definitely worth a try, it only takes about a minute at most.
Joseph Silverman
05-16-2008, 07:01 AM
i don't really like that technique, at all. A decent texture requires a lot of precise, intelligent color variation -- not only does the rgbclouds look bad and random, it doesn't give you a chance to learn anything from doing it.
Japhir
05-16-2008, 09:35 AM

most of the top half of the head will be covered with a hood so I didn't bother, the spec on the hair isn't on the diffuse it's from the specmap, so it's dynamic
nice sculpt nick - just hate the shader :)
vahl: maybe the pores are a bit too even overall? but nice work, like it.
airship thingie, finished the whole baking and retouching stuff, texture work next..

Neox: This may be nit-picking, but I hope you add fore-wings to that thing. She doesn't look like she'd ever get off the ground as it stands. But cool model so far.
a fat engine and a long ramp will get this baby up in the air :D

http://www.lufthoheit.com/hafen2prefinal.jpg
it's the whole point of the design to be one giant engine with small wings to sit directly on the engine, not going to change a design thats been done a year back, maybe exxagerate it a bit more, but extra wings will make it less big und risky, but thanks for the hint :)

SEKNeox: I am loving it! Is this a personal project or some sort of mod? The style is so cool. Can't wait for the texture on that engine bike.
It's a personal project and a mod :D
for UT3, we wanted to do it on cryengine first but saw more good things on unreal engine, escecially when it goes to the code side of the game, in crysis you need a coder, in unreal you need them only from time to time if you're not heading for something uberfancy, the the toolset is just awesome. even though it seems all faked like hell to get performance, but on the other hand, the enginge just runs on a lot of systems and has ps3 modability too...
however we just started over at moddb, so some more stuff to be seen over there :)

Wow, all that stuff is awesome SEKNeox, can't wait to play any of that!
playability is something thats even more far away then having something that can be called a level xD
but thanks :)

That looks really awesome sekneox, really fun style etc. Looks like it will be a ton of fun to do :)
SEKNeox : Have fun with the mod, it's up to a great start already, I'd work on the gameplay earlier than you seem to plan it though, so that you can rapid prototype stuff in kismet first to make the coders work easier later on, and so that you can test the various features.

I'd work on the gameplay earlier than you seem to plan it though, so that you can rapid prototype stuff in kismet first to make the coders work easier later on, and so that you can test the various features.
i'd totally agree but we have enough stuff to do on the visual side and can't learn everything in unreal at once, shaders, matinee, physics stuff etc is all stuff to learn and we are "only" artists right now, definitely searching for guys with kismet knowledge, but as long as there's no one who knows all that stuff we can only do what we can do best and do gameplay testing besides :/
in the end, i'm not heading for a big playable game but for a good looking demo, everything else comes after that, but if scripting/coding/kismet folks would like to help, i wouldn't mind :D
@your work: he's definitely getting better and better, waiting for his hoody :)
thanks to everyone else :)

Lots of love for this thread right now.
El Z0rR: Would probably look even better with color =]. Design-wise, I'm not sure why its head is looking down. Wouldn't it want to see where it was going? Unless you plan on it being up and its down for easier rigging.
Japhir: Nice finish. I agree with vahl, you're cruising on progress.
Nick: I haven't seen The Wire, so I'm not sure about likeness, but it's looking great. The ear could use another subdivision though.
Neox, katz: I feel nothing but happiness when I see an Airborn update.
IxenonI: Thats a damn nice looking car.
StJoris: Yeah! Love it.

started baking yesterday, still some parts to do...
@supa: haha funny thing :D
@stjoris: very nice lowpoly stuff, definitely fits the style, let spayes guys jump around in that set ^^
@elemtrix: i'm kinda missing contrast right now it kinda looks like it's settled in a world full of poisoned fog ;)
@swizzle: i like some of the forms but somehow it doesn't fit together that well, you mixed some pretty organix details with hard edged stylized curvature, i'm not sure but maybe you could push it further in any of both directions to get a better working design?
Swizzle
05-19-2008, 01:37 AM
That's pretty sexy, Neox.
I know what you mean about the hard edges and the organic forms, but that won't be too much of a problem later on. I'm actually going to be sculpting some fabric folds, seams and stuff into his clothes so it all fits together better.
I guess I did get kind of stuck in a cartoony mode when I modeled the collar and stuff, though. I was working from a very stylized concept, after all.

Cool work jaco, I'm not so sure about those abs though. belly button could use some work too. Keep it up mate.
@vitor: you shouldn't feel bad, the new head is cool, though some stuff on the profile looks odd, ich think the corners of the mouth should be moved more inwards, the mouth is looking really flat and while the wrinkle besides the nostrils looks cool in front view, it's looking kinda strange on the sideview, so maybe a bit more experimenting on the volumes would help :)
oh and i'd usggest not to do hair on this resolution, really having it done on texturebase is way easier and lets you combine normals with diffuse better, and it really doesn't help your character as it reaveals the meshdensity in this part pretty much, so i think maybe working in some szbtle forms from the skull will help you way more then eyecandy details
ok went on... sideengines and rotor still missing and some details here and there

I like what you did there vitor, the only thing that bugs me his lower jaw bone, its very hard, it should merge with the neck at the back but instead it pops out very hard!
@ SEKNeox
Nice, but you need to bake faster! :P
@ Jaco
Very cool, you also need to make the veins pop out more with some color!
Vitor, nice head but I do agree it is very similar to the other ones, why not use some reference and just make some random peoples faces for practice?

This thread has always been a huge source of inspiration for me, so I figured I should start adding to it in hopes of doing the same for someone else.
I decided to jump on the ZBrush bandwagon. After 2 hours of fussing with the mesh being inverted (Display Properties > Flip!), I finally got around to learning the interface and all the crazy brushes.
