No most of those are made as separate tools and then placed with projection master to make one mesh. Most of the techniques can be seen here

Its fairly fast to whip out. This model was made in about an hour with nothing pre-made.

10-12-2008, 06:49 AM
yeah, if you're happy with that end result then why not just make 6 or 7 tiny squares of colour and put each area's uvs inside the square. That, plus the eye texture should easily fit into a 64x
CookieKingHoi
10-12-2008, 08:30 AM
Hmm, I dunno, Think I'm going to keep it like this, the engine doesnt support multiple uv's, a 256x256 works fine for this.
No, it'd still be one UV set. You'd just UV map it so that those areas you've got laid out now would fit into small (say 8x8 or 4x4 pixel) squares of colour. Just scale the UVs down and put each area inside one of those blocks.
So if you had a 64x64 texture, 3/4 of it could be the eye (48x64) and the other 16x64px could be a group of colour blocks.
The UVs for those areas would just be scaled really small.
Your current texture does seem very wasteful since you've got a full unwrap for stuff which is essentially flat colour fills. The only detail which doesn't need this is the eye.

Great stuff Spinks. Love that face! I take it the diffuse colors are baked down from polypainting or did you do that on the flats? Maybe throw a shirt on him to cover up that lumpy upper body and you'll have a real winner of a bust!!

anything that thin, id do it on two alpha'd planes facing opposite directions with backfacing turned off, in most engines that would give you a nice "drop shadow effect" (back faces pick up lighting from opposite direction) that makes it look 3d and will give you the nice curvy shape without spending shit loads of polys and having a ballache baking the norms
do it on the shapes at the top aswell

One thing to remember is that with backfacing turned off, one side is going to be lit incorrectly in most engines. So its best to just manually duplicate and flip the geometry. Its the same performance cost anyway.

so does that mean I have to have four planes on the bottom, where they are back to back?

I know this might be a dumb question but you have four maps : a diffuse, a spec, a normal and something else. What is the the other one for? Other than that great job, this thing rocks!

Josh, I can honestly say that looks so much better than any of the Pokemon game art they release. If they had the balls to release a game with that level of quality, it would be awesome to see from a technical standpoint.
Alas, Nintendo will just keep on releasing the same old game... Makes sense, it DOES print money for them, but damn, what could be eh?

Vitor, your sculpts are pretty consistently good. The only thing that really bugs me about them is the ears. They always look the same and that's not necessarily a good thing. The look unnatural or malformed.
I did a little paintover animation to show you what I think you could do to make them look better. Hope it's helpful!

What kind of materials do you use for this sculpt? I was thinking about doing few real sculpts myself but I honestly havent had time yet to research it.
RAWKSTAR YOU SExY MoFo!!
It has alot of character, the white marbles look like a pare of dead eyes :)
It looks like regular clay but then again.. its too smooth and detailed, plus your plate is too clean. Im also curious what you used since i want to get rid of regular clay!
The 3rd shot is win, you should make the final shot from that angle+lighting
Buddy, for a start, i would recommend regular, its cheap and you have alot of volume to mess around with. Its great to get some exp with :)
on second thought, i can get my clay to look like that in a wet state

I'm using: J-Mac Classic Clay, its an oil based clay, so once i'm done i can just cannibalize it and make a new sculpt, it basically lasts forever, never dries and never sags and never hardens, all u have to do is warm it up a little bit occasionally, but even that isn't really necessary, i think i'm working with it in soft or medium hardness. i also have castiline, but it sux, so annoying having to always heat it up and then it gets all waxy, i hate it. the only downfall of classic clay is since it doesn't ever get really hard or whatever u can't make really small stuff with it, its good for busts and larger sculpts though. you also can't bake it in an oven like super sculpy, so the only way to get a cast of it and get it painted is to make a mold, but for practice its pretty nice. i need bigger beads for eyeballs too... :(

Hey josh, this is looking phenomenal...One thing though...why does it look so washed out compared to the previous 3q render you did...Maybe it's just me, but I think it looked more vibrant.

Hmmm for some reason I like the colors of the spec-color better than the diffuse for that turtwig,it seems just way too saturated! Anyway, awesome job!
Lol, now Im very curious on how it would look if you switched the spec-color with the diffuse :P

10-16-2008, 05:41 PM
WOW, thank you guys for your positive remarks! I am glad you like it.
Tremulant, I had to crank the ambient to get rid of the black shadows. I wanted it to be on the more cartoony Pokemon side of things. As most things with normal maps, seeing it with the lights playing across the surface brings out the normal map and specular touches, maybe I'll make a turn around or something...
Kwakkie, don't fear the saturation, embrace the color! lol.

More detail cooking... The sword should at least have some scratches / nics, as well as put some highlight and shadow information in your texture, you can get a base by baking out an AO map, but you really need to push this texture before you start anything else man.
Other thing is man, you should have just modeled this as well, be good practice :)

I dunno, I just got a model and started a texture.
Hmm, yes, the metal doesnt really look real, but I do look at refrence, it's just that I'm not really good at this, I need alot of practise, I think I'm going to make something else now, I'll try to do better and check some more ref, like oblivion.
I think I should stop using filters for metal, I'm going to try to not use them this time, or al least, let it look less spongy.

use photos as base materials ( adsting levels and cleaning first) then paint over the top. deffinatly dont use filters. and for reference, use pictures of real swords only look at games when you want to steal their techniques

Only about 40-50% done. Texturing at the moment is just placeholding so excuse the tiling and scale. Some objects aren't final.
http://kiernanmay.net/images/polycount/alienPrison.jpg
I hope to finish it off soon, just posting it in here for incentive to get it done.
I might think about adding a vehicle on the bottom right there so you get a better sense of scale too. Some might recognize this from a particular movie.
Great thread!

@ PixelMasher
Yea its captured from unreal ed, the material is based on an existing character material, it has a lot of nodes, so a screenshot wouldnt be very usefull. There is sidelight fx in it, that also most of the default chars have and yea i also added a slight fresnel effect. Also special is the transmission effect.
@Baddcog
The animations seem a bit strange though. The tail wagging during flight seems to make me think he'd be turning back and forth.

Alien 3 alright! The original scene was just a hallway, but I reckon the scale would look great if it were the side of a massive building or ship or something.
Looks promising Toast! Is this environment for a game or static image?
Static image. I really want to practice unwrapping and texturing skills.

I dunno if this approach is best for this kinda of exaggerated character proportions , I do believe that the bowling balls attached to her chest need to be brought closer together so they dont look...like bowling balls attached to her chest :P

Spent more time on the texture before deciding not to be so poly-tight. Bevelled some things out and made a high LOD mesh that gets toggled close-up and during cutscenes.

Very much a WIP, its a tileset for a gameproject we are doing in school atm. Not finished with any of the textures and going to add some more stuff, a doortile! ;p some more signs on the different floors and stuff and probably a couple of biiiig signs on top of the roof. Might also make some groundtiles for presentation when im done with the rest.
The black parts is supposed to be windows, they will have a high reflectivity/cubemap reflections when ingame.
@japhir: i'd try to give it more depth with another color right now it goes from blue which is like 50% brightness to black, give it maybe some brighter less saturated blue from top or something its just right now very blue and flat, yes the beast is blue but you could improve it alot with different colored shadows and highlights
@sephorin: if i understood right what you are trying to do with the shading, i'd definitely ramp the shading more
