One concept out of a few that still need to be scanned.

Burt Rutan does F-Zero. Nice concept Pior.

Peris
08-08-2007, 02:04 AM
ooh very cool /images/graemlins/smile.gif. Looks fragile for an f-zero racecar tho!

pior
08-08-2007, 03:24 AM
Yup Peris I agree! It definately needs to be chunkier. I think I will go on testing materials and such before actually deciding on a design.

At least I've got the name and color now!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/crimsonflamingo.png

I've got a few others I want to try stuff with, esp one that was supposed to be a simple front floater thingie ala SWEpisode1 but that I will turn into a ship of its own - thus giving a simple, blockier look. Til then I'll go on practicing 2D material rendering with the other designs I have at hand.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/fzerochallengeconcept004b.png

Vailias I never hear of Burt Rutan before but after some research I think I see what you mean. Slick stuff!

Ged, I whish I did. Still there is a ton of good starter info to grab from the Robertson and Neville Page Gnomon DVDs.

the orange car paint ist HOT!

Still trying to nail down glossy materials using 2d photoshop mockups ala Neville Page.

Jaco

These material studies are looking amazing, the 2d one too.
The latest glossy material is looking very sexy, even though it doesn't have that nice glow effect the first one had.

pior
08-10-2007, 01:15 AM
Hey Jaco they are all 2d :P Yeah the last one is less glowly/ghostly - Yet I feel it is more satisfactory as a potential carpaint. I thought the first one was looking too jelly-transparent. However the last one looks too much like ceramics with a layer of gloss on top... might need to look into that further.

Vroom!

First try with Alias Sketbook Pro, yo!

Trying to learn the product rendering clichés, all at once haha :P

woah dude not bad effort, nice perspective on those circles, is it a brush or something?

I will have to give sketchbook another look, nice stuff. You doing this sketching on a tablet pc or something similar?

hawken
08-11-2007, 09:30 PM
yeah how do you do them circles?

Jesse Moody
08-12-2007, 03:56 AM
looks like someone has some gnomon dvds

pior
08-12-2007, 10:55 AM
Haha Jesse yeah, a friend passed me a few last year and I am now slowly going trough them - the shiny ball was obviously done by following Neville Page's. I thought that the Fzero challenge was a nice occasion to try the classic rendering tricks that are distilled in these discs. Also my table-mate at the office has a background in Industrial Aesthetics and is showing me how and where to place chrome horizon lines and stuff.

Hawk and Ged it's just a dirty trick :
http://www.productdesignforums.com/index.php?showtopic=2447

Teri that's an Intuos. I know I will get myself a Cintiq someday but I'd love to borrow/rent a tablet PC to see how these devices handle sketching programs. Being able to tilt the document to adjust to a natural arm movement is something I miss a lot with digital mediums.

Anyways, still looking for a design I like, no success so far! Maybe I'll go for the one with a blue racecar stripe.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/pior_ubb/concept005.png

And still practicising the dirty shiny tricks...

Okay I derailled that thread well enough, time to get to work.

Started with the lowpoly, hopefully I'll begin the texture work tonight. Wooosh!

madness! i love it! can't wait to see it textured.

Keg
08-19-2007, 12:17 PM
sexy, although massive for a fzero racer. If I recall most ships where maybe half that size.

Ged
08-19-2007, 03:25 PM
huuge but very cool! Id like to see wires of the back those patterns people make on stuff always confuse me when I try to make them

hawken
08-19-2007, 09:42 PM
bit super massive! Probably wider than a F-Zero track.

Xenobond
08-20-2007, 01:59 PM
That'd be awesome watching that big one racing along side the regular sized cars.
GET OUT OF MEH WAI!!

Joshua Stubbles

It's huge, but sexy!
Awesome design, pior.

pior
08-21-2007, 06:09 AM
Yeah actually I think I'll keep it this size and give it a paintjob featuring stylized mammoths silhouettes emulating the Designers Republic style used in the Fzero series... Could be fun!

JordanW
08-21-2007, 06:35 AM
I dig it, your lines came out really good.

Working on these and seeing all the awesome ideas people have make me really want a new solid fzero racing game to play /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Lowpoly and normalmap baking done, and halfway throught the texturing. I won't let the top hull like this and plan to weather it just like the bottom part - just wanted to test out the pattern and a possible color scheme.

Almost there!

08-27-2007, 01:34 AM
Goddamn awesome!

The arched fin gives away the lowpoly look a little too much - a few more divisions and the high poly illusion will be much more complete.

I'd like to see the blue a bit more saturated, but that is of course personal taste.

Ged
08-27-2007, 03:58 AM
wooow! beautiful work, I think the clean colours of the top hull give a nice contrast and make it look smoother and faster but I suppose a little battle wear wouldnt be bad.

vahl
08-27-2007, 04:16 AM
very nice piorou
I like the designer republics like logo ala wipeoutXL /images/graemlins/laugh.gif colorscheme is cool too

Sectaurs
08-27-2007, 07:08 AM
yar... the shape resolution on that arched fin stands out, but thats the only thing I could pick apart for crits

Brice Vandemoortele
08-27-2007, 10:49 AM
nice one, now I want to play ^^

Isn't there a problem with the bloom effect? seems like it appears even when it's occluded by the mesh

I think the big arch may benefit from some more vertex, the rest of the shape looks so perfect, it's a pity this element reminds it's a game asset.

What happened with the orange? A whole lot of colour study only to settle for a standard blue?
Overall though, it looks great! I don't mind the lo-res spoiler/fin at the back, but it is the only give away that it is a lo-poly model.
Looking forward to the final.

pior
08-28-2007, 01:44 AM
Well I kindof gave up with the orange as I felt it didn't match with the mammoth-like proportions of the model! As for the color studies it was mostly a mean to learn about carpaint behaviour, reflections aso - all these car design tricks really.

Yup Brice the glow effect behaved oddly, I tried messing with the G-buffer values but it didn't help. Sometimes it gets sorted correctly when I select everything at once, sometimes it doesn't, weird!

Agreed about the lowpoly arch... I might go back to itt later. The whole stands at 1316 atm, already sliiightly overbudget still!

Anyways!

Looks awesome, Pior.

About it's hugeness; You could just say that the driver is some kind of small, rodent-like alien or something. Problem solved! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

hawken
08-28-2007, 05:49 AM
hmm, the texture doesn't make it look so huge, some of the scratches are bigger than your driver. Just scale him up and be done with it!!

RazorBladder
08-28-2007, 06:13 AM
erm, big scratches from big debris?

pior
08-28-2007, 07:14 AM
Hmmm I think I'll keep the scratches as is (caused by other vehicules smashing into it) but I might add a side 'ladder' on the hull to convey the sense of scale. Vroom!

killingpeople
08-28-2007, 07:25 AM
rad fzero racer, pior. looks as if she hasn't been used in a while. hey, you should add some streaked smoke , grease, etc. around the damaged areas and stuff. maybe some space bugs splattered on the windshield.

Joshua Stubbles
08-28-2007, 08:02 AM
Great stuff, pior. Looks amazing.

_Shimmer
08-28-2007, 12:15 PM
so simple, yet so amazing.

Very nice. I like the colors. very good work on the diffuse but I would darken the edges at the back but leave it in the spec.

cool studies!

rube
08-28-2007, 02:36 PM
looks great... but I think the top looked better with the highly polished shine on it.. this thing dwarfs every other car so it's not like the top will get banged around much

Pedro Amorim
08-28-2007, 02:59 PM

great model, very inpiring texture work /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm curious if you made the texture straight to 512x512 or made it higher and scaled it down ?
