"After the decimation of the polycount weapons planet the dark generals were forced to look deep into the void seeking there beings of untapped power.
The Manitae was found, deadly and ruthless it joined the ranks not only with the intention of spilling blood for polycount, but also with the intent to climb to greater power amoungst those who sought to utilize its strength.
Outside of its native plane of existence it found the need to bind its tentacles to enable it to traverse in a humanoid method of locamotion. Ruthless and cunning it assaults mortal minds with its telepathic powers, turning men against their own troops causing sabotage and chaos. Perhaps the more brutal fate befalls the machines that it encounters. Its Telekenis is unmatched, they machines are tossed like a unwanted childs toy, the gears jamming and systems failing as they are ripped apart from the inside.
However he finds the greatest pleasure holding his enemies before his eyes, crushing them in his python like grip. "

im not feelin the split tentacle holding the staff thing, it just never seemed like a tentacle would be good for holding things like a hand. other than that i love where it is going. if you do stick with the tentacle, check out jason felix's site, he has a bad ass character with the tentacle deal.

keep it up

gauss
02-05-2007, 11:20 PM
richkid: when was the last time you went around holding shit with a tentacle, huh? just ask any giant squid, they seem to have no trouble not only holding, but tearing the main mast right off of friggin' frigates. not feeling the tentacles, pfeh! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

spacemonkey: thank you for showing the kids how it's done. you're crunching away, probably not even enough time to feed the missus and the kids back home a hot meal, and yet you're STILL posting a concept to rock socks every which way (and off).
while spacemonkeyish in many good ways, it's still very fresh. i really dont have much of anything in the way of crits or suggestions at this point, other than the token "do some thumbnails" bit. but i trust you'll have a horrible, unbeatable beastie in no time at the rate you're going. only fitting for a returning winner! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

thanks guys, /images/graemlins/laugh.gif encouraging responses for that first draft w00t

dur23, who'd have thought that there is actually a manatee', I am a couple of letters away from a fat see elephant thing! haha! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Fear that fat!

richkid, its certainly not executed well in my peice... so it doesnt represent well - no holdies in this next sketch.. but that doesnt mean he wont /images/graemlins/smile.gif a mass of tentacles can holding things in very interesting ways!

Hey gauss, yeah the feedback is good - before I painted I drafted out a series of 5 A4 sketches.. refinging shapes and figuring out the elements I want to include. Thumbnails are damned good - and they helped me avoid some retro scifi stuff that creeped into that first sketch.. but after a day at work away from the pic I decided he felt too generic.
not enough flesh - too many humanoid elements.. boring and tired.. so I am hoping to push him further down the spiral.
The new sketch needs lots of elaboration and exploration but I think he's more on the right track /images/graemlins/wink.gif let me know what you think!

last year I rushed my design and I felt the pain of it later... if you read my interview its one thing I kicked my own ass about!

Nice Spacemonkey, They're all very cool... I really like creepiness from the first sketch, keeping the arms reaching out(or doing something with purpose) while the tentacles lash about wildly. You get the impression of a crown or a Tiara that enhances psychic energy in the first sketch too which is pretty awesome... Maybe a tail is in order to sweep you back up into the upper body... The Metal pressed up against the flesh is gonna look awesome!!!!

Mansir thanks

struve - yeah mobility bugged me - so I added some!

almighty_gir, kongni thanks guys

rooster, yeah I prefer the second face - the first one was too skull - the second design has potential but the pose is a bit weak, so it doesnt sell well /images/graemlins/frown.gif but I still lub him! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

ThE_BirD, good point - the crown kind of lost its function in the second degenerated into a glorified helmet! The tail was a hot suggestion /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Some really awesome art going on here. Have to say that i loved the first one the best, the overall feeling of it, the fourth one looks kickass for sure, but reminds me way to much of the alien queen. I would go with something inbetween image one and three, to be more spicific, go with the image one, and add the floating device + head from image three, just my two cents /images/graemlins/wink.gif.

02-08-2007, 05:52 PM
Like the evolution of this character alot, much better form in the last concept, i think the head could be bigger and positioned slightly further forward on the body to make it more balanced. I think it would be good to give it a little more armor to, not much just on the shin's and top of the feet, or on the tip of the tail, or both. Think this will help the organic and technical elements tie in nicely as a whole, good job tho mate, keep up the fine work

Emil Mujanovic
02-08-2007, 08:23 PM
I'm really digging this latest iteration, I was going to say the arms look a little small. But T-Rex arms were small! I think the tentacles help with the proportions. Great stuff!

gavku, thanks

rollin , hey rollin I think you'll find the they blend a little better now /images/graemlins/smile.gif its was a good point!

indian_boy yeah I reduced the length of the head- it was bugging me. the arm size... well I'll save my judgement till I see it in 3d /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

CitizenDown, tentacle rape? maybe in the final pose he can be violating some of the peeps from cgchat ? haha, in all seriousness I think he would be deadly in close combat with them, combined with the psychic powR is destruction.

Ninjas floaty was fun, but felt slow.. this guy needs that alien like agility for climing ceilings and chasing people down corridors. It just felt that with the hovering he would be a bullet magneT..

almighty_gir , yeah definately some alience.. I did a quick move of the feet but I'm more concerned about getting the right ideas down

MadGaz thanks

JPSeiler he felt clunky to me, boring shapes although I liked the head gear - its certainly gave me the ideas for his evolution

Painbringer I hope's I get time to actually make him.. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

warby , yeah but he's a shadow killer.. not a ice cream vendor.. I liked it..but it wasnt right

Shady-D some Elites?? I dont know.. glad you like him /images/graemlins/smile.gif

stix I know I did some of what you mentioned, been adding some armour last day or so. He definately needed more balance

caseyjones thanks, well I did want those arms to feel small next to the power physical prescence of the tentacles - but in reality I wanted the small arms to be the conduits for his psychic power.

richkid well thats cool, I just bought 2 of Huante's books. Guess they were worth getting !

indian_boy
02-09-2007, 12:36 AM
hey i really like the squid thing u got on the right shoulder. and i love the tail splitting into to (i didn't notice it earlier...)
but something about the leg are bugging me... not to be mean or sound irritating or anything... but they seem to be too similar to ur last one(Brood). The shape and all are good, but the "cyborgification" is.... almost typical? With ur calibre, i think u can show more creativity and style in the legs... just my two cents...
otherwise, i luv it... looks great and the thing u did with the head is just right

Vitor

but there is something what bugs me... not sure.. but i guess ists a problem with the legs for them self.. this thing seems not to have bones in itīs limbs.. but in itīs legs.. thats a bit wired.. this tentacles idear is superb but seems to stop before the legs..

but could also only be my stupid eye.. lalala

donīt mind.. this is super nice and i love to see it finished .. so gogogo /images/graemlins/smile.gif

omgz! he's stomping his own tail... that's hardcore

Lookin really sweet dude. Dig'n the tentacly skull armor.

not really sold on the swirly baby arms. it's a neat idea, but the concept could be pushed a lot better. maybe extra dangles that weren't long enough to get tied into the bunch? Anyway, it's partly the proportions (of the pseudo-arms) that bother me, and partly that it's a neat idea that doesn't pop out until you first realize that the muscle structure on the arm doesn't feel right at all. I mentally said to myself "Why did he do the muscle structure like that? That's all wrong, he knows better." and after examining more closely realized that it was a tangle of tentacles. I think you want that to pop out more. Instead of saying "that's wrong... oh wait.. neat..." you want "blah jtaw2 SWEEETqT!!!#!2#!" right? yeah.. you know this... so I think it's a neat idea that needs to get worked out better.. good luck. Dig'n your entry so far.

rollin

or simone, who has hardly a brain but could cook (like hell) and makes everything you want (or not)
or dou you want gila who is going to buy you a deamon toaster and loves playing burnitdown with you... and the toaster

EVIL thanks!

indian_boy - I've changed the shape of the legs to give them flow with the armour - they arent supposed to be cyborg, just armour enabling the tentacles to act as a leg.

Vitor , thanks seeya in the field

rollin , well the final idea is that the legs are formed with tentacles bound together - like the smaller arms - it should be pretty evident when I model them /images/graemlins/smile.gif

EricElwell - they arms didnt read that well there.. too many twists.. while its not 100% obvious from my fianl pic they are still bound , slightly plumper and there are les twists!

MoP -thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Askhat - definately not a human in there but certainly a creature trying to act like one

rooster - yeah I will definately give a weapon some thought.. it'd be a shame to not utilize the polies in some form!!!

Zcubed glad you liked it

i love how the concept has it's own internal logic. looking at you think, this just has to work, right? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

the one area i think falls short is the exposed toes, since they're boneless there is no way they can support all that weight. he'd simply fall forward.

Davision3D

fogmann
02-11-2007, 09:16 AM
I love this design and I think what makes it so strong is color scheme and the balance of curvy vs spiky shapes. Here's an idea for what you could do: add some spiky elements also on the feet, as a form of armor/support for tentacle ends, and that way you add some more of this contrast, and it could work nicely as all the spiky parts would almost go in the same direction and in addition they would make his "feet" look stronger and able to support all that weight.

02-11-2007, 10:23 AM
those armor pieces and the design in general is just awesome !! Definitly a strong entry /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Fuse
02-11-2007, 11:11 AM
what i really like about this piece is the cold/icy mood of the character. Almost like the early alien movies had.

He looks like he would feel cold to the touch and chill any enclosed space that he's in ..

A lot of character for a seemingly obvious demon/alien

poopinmymouth
02-11-2007, 01:59 PM
One thing that might help this piece some is some distinguishing features on the tentacles to distinguish top from bottom. Just like octopii have suction cups on the underneath, and snakes tend to have flat "bottoms" of their roundness, it gives you a clue as to how the tentacle is oriented. You might have already planned that, but right now they just read as round shapes and I think they could have more visual interest with a varying cross section.

The concept looks awesome so far, some octopus/squid like suction cups on those long tentacles could be a cool addition though.

Thegodzero
02-12-2007, 05:46 PM
I got an idea for you, why not have the legs be tentacles all all packed together into the shape of legs, and also for the small arms. Its just a creepy idea to have this creature trying to make its self look more human by packing its self into the human shapes. Also i love ben's idea of going more octopus tentacles for them.

aw, i liked his fingers bound together to make two bigger fingers. it was my kind of kinky!

He/she/it definitely needs some bulk in the cod piece, even if just a little bit, to get rid of the textured-bikini-bottom look.

I'd also go ahead and add a pink feather boa for that extra bit of contrast to really make him pop.

my awesome crits aside, this whole thread makes my pants tight.

LegionaireJoe
02-12-2007, 07:40 PM
Some people have mentioned not seeing the distinct tentacles being bound to form the limbs. I eventually put two and two together after staring at the toes for a lil while, but it took some time to dig them out, so to speak. If you're wanting to do another concept pass, emphasizing that aspect a tad bit more would be great, otherwise I'm sure we'll be seeing it in 3D soon and our questions will be answered. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Stunning stuff as usual Tim. The forms overall are really quite chilling.

If I had to crit though, I feel like some of the micro forms could be more considered. The face suffers a tiny bit from detail for the sake of detail, without you having put a ton of contemplation into it. He seems to be in some kind of mid open mouthed expression, perhaps rage, and yet the direction of the wrinkles dont seem to follow what the face is doing at all, thus making the facial expression feel somewhat confused. Linky If what Im saying isn't making sense: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=51960977&size=o In an open mouthed pose, it would seem to me to feel a lot more natural If the folds in the face were more vertical along the sides of the mouth than diagonal as you have them. Hope this makes sense. Clearly I'm nitpicking here, and this is well on the way to being a leading contender. Have a good kip /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Spacemonkey, I have to agree with the rest of the group (which I hate, as I like to pretend that I can have an original thought). But with the removal of the legs, which in my opinion added a variation to the design to help accentuate the snake like arms and help push the eye up to the head, makes your eye now lose its focus. Don't get me wrong, I still love the design and concept of this guy, but he just has lost some of the interesting shapes that I liked. But I have no worries in what you will do, as I know it will be kickass.

Nothing wrong with the power of three you have going on with the top, but why not pull it down to the base. Why have two legs when he has 6 arms,it would make more sense to have three legs so that he has three sides all with three appendages.

Maybe even with the "hands" ones give then a three prong split at the end to hold shit. I like to think this thing is what evolution creates out of worms when they are the main predator in a dimension.

Tentaculer!! I'm not the kind of person who usually leaves a comment just to say Great job without a critique but That's looking insanely detailed and well done. The detail you've added does not detract from the major flow of the character and i like that alot, attention to detail but not to excess. i don't mean to be a downy clowny, but i'm not feeling that armor design. theres verry few mid level details,, its all big forms, and then its all small fine details, a bunch of really thin straps and screw things, that i think will come off pretty flat feeling on the normal map,

good luck tho!

Cridder
02-20-2007, 10:52 PM
Looking really good, your character keeps on getting better and better but I have to agree with <font color="green">Rhinokey</font> there is alot of super high detail but you may find trouble holding the same about of detail when you use the displancement(normal) map. More mid range details will show better and then you can probably got the small cool stuff with a good bump map.

the encouragement is great, thanks all

struve - well I'm a detail whore but I totally admit I might have to scale up some of the stitching to get it to read ok - I'll see how its goes and make changes when my rendermesh is ready

Rhinokey - no need to be that downy clown! /images/graemlins/smile.gif Its a good point to bring up the missing medium range stuff and I agree its possible for it work against me. I want to minimize larger shapes that might require polies in the rendermesh because he has so many appendidges that will eat into the polycount. To keep him visually interesting I added the detail and intend to create contrast through material changes. I guess we'll know how it turns out in a few weeks!!

So i need to do more mudboxing for the various tentacles and get them ready to roll. Head needs some tweaks and the crown is still rough. Hoping to have the detailmesh finished this weekend so I can get my rendermesh done next week and make some headway with the textures and shaders.

Very cool stuff Tim, I love his pose and armour. Bloody love what you've done with the legs too, very cool idea to bunch up the tentacles and clamp them together with the boots to form squishy tentacle-feet... great stuff! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

However one fairly major crit I'd give is that the big tentacle on his back is looking pretty basic, even though you seem to have gone quite a long way with detailing... it's suffering from that thing where there's not enough basic interesting shape (ie. it's just a cylinder) and then it's got wrinkles and stuff on top.
I'd probably drop down a couple of sub-d levels and push the shape into something more tentacley (flatter on the bottom, rounded on the top with a frill-like area around the edges).

Apart from that it's shaping up really well, keep it up! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Are you using a bump map with a normal or is it all normal mapping? If it is all normal mapping I can see why your CPU is having troubles making a AO map, too many things for the computer to think about. I suggest that you try and use your Normal map only for the really large/med stuff and use a Bump map for the small details (if you are not doing so already). This would make it that the computer has less surface area to read and you "should" be able to create an AO map. It will also cut down render time. And if this works and you feel you still want to use only Normal map you should have a decent AO map that it will look like you were able to do with only a Normal map.

My two-bits. This is looking really great /images/graemlins/smile.gif

struve
03-04-2007, 03:05 PM
Jaco is right; use the blue channel from your normal map for an AO map. It's not the best, but if you have no other choice; it works.

Thanks for the suggested methods guys.. I tried to render to texture from my normal map today and I got a blue screen.. my graphics card fan is broken so I have to cool it with a regular fan .. so I'm thinking I might have to replace the old thing!
so far no AO map, I might try rendering on my laptop.. but I'll see how it goes.
oh yeah colour change.. I just not feeling to cold tones right now so I'm firing it up.

I loved the cold tones you had before, made it seem superior and futuristic, a calm killer, he's in control (makes me think of the Tau saying "The patient hunter always gets it's prey).

But you will probably change my mind later on when I see a more finished piece;), its hard to judge so early in the texturing stage.

I'm going to have to agree with what's already been said. I was really digging the cool colors, and I think the warm, firey tones are a bit overkill. Maybe you can change my mind, but if I were you, I'd maybe make the change a bit less drastic. Going from cool grays and blues to bright, warm reds and yellows was quite a different direction, and changes the character completely in my opinion.

Either way it will be excellent, but the original color scheme (greyish skin, blue glowies, black armor) seemed to fit the model much more than this new color scheme. This monster of your looks like some kind of hideous alien despot, some great Emperor or something. The blues and greys and blacks just seemed to make him look terrifying in his magnificence. This new color scheme does seem a bit overkill. He's already scary.

If you haven't already, you may want to try xNormal to render your AO from high to low. Since it is not loading the model for vieweing, it may use less RAM.

Octopus usually turn bright red or show off some vibrant patterns (http://animalreviews.zelica.net/assets/octopus3.jpg) when they're pissed off - "I'm the octopus, bitch. Don't screw with me."

With that in mind, the red doesn't seem like such a bad idea, though a whole lot of variation from the body to the tips of the tentacles would probably work well.

ok so good adivce! I Think DreadReaper nailed it, its was feeling too royal, not enough shadow. I just felt like painting red! &gt;:E but he'll look better with these tones - which is obviously very early in texturing

Edit: updated the screens because of bad compression :O

Gorgeous work tim! I like the new colors better than the red and yellow. although I think the blue is a bit out of place. I would push it more to the purple color that you already have for the armor. A winner for sure, I've got to bring mine up to speed and quick!

Also, another thing you may want to try to get your AO to bake is to run an Optimize modifier on your high model and then collapse the stack-- you will lose some detail, but not really that much, depedning on the settings you need.

careful spacemonkey--as I recall, you got into some late-period color noodling with your Dominance War entry from last year. But I have confidence you'll sort it all out. Photoshop color comping is your friend!

Dude, I only just now noticed that the limbs are made of tenticles. Awesome idea.

I see there is a bit of a mess at the top of the gloves tho where two of the tenticles blend together a bit. Some creative texture work should solve that tho.

Jaco dont worry its undercontrol /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Johny yeah sometimes a low chroma scheme cane be just what the character needed, but I hope he wont feel completely colourless when done. Lots of work to do yet

mvelasquez thanks well I've still really got all the work to do so things may change a little but i definately have the direction down now

Ninjas, yeah lots of good suggestions in this thread now /images/graemlins/wink.gif I know i can get by without one but if I do get a render going its going to have to be in max to keep the trace distance consistancy

gauss, hey no always here with good advice! yeah this year I have decided now what i'm doing and I'm excited about getting the texture undeway /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I have a little skin tone scheme ready just need to implement those tones

Xaltar yeah theres a couple o normal map bloopers but I am systematically fixing them in photoshop /images/graemlins/smile.gif

funny thing, my graphics card on my pc died tonight! I can only get the machine to run in safe mode now.. but fortunately I have a laptop so I ported my relevant files over.
But I'm happy with the direction now /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'd really like to see some saturated color on the tentacles, where they're closest to the body. Maybe a dark red or orange. Something warm to help separate his flesh from his armor. I think it would help add depth to his character and species in general. They're not born in armor that perfectly matches their skin tone, are they? I imagine he's a Shadow by profession, not birth.

Cridder

I agree with Sectaurs but I also think that the underside of the tentacles should be a lighter colour then the top like a starfish.

i agree about the 2-coloured tentacles, it would give some calm variations in colour aswell (ie, dont make the 2 colours pink and green). This way, you'd be able to tell that the arms/legs are bunched up tentacles (cuz they'll be a different colour where two tentacles meet if u c what im saying?)
Other than that, this colour choice is way better than the other one which was rightfully called "royal-looking".

Shaping up to be real awesome. Having this in the frame is enough of a 'beauty' shot, so that's one less thing u have to worry bout rendering /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

The specular happenin on that large tentacle (i imagine it's similar on the smaller ones too) doesn't look right to me.
It's either: A) Too Powerful. or B) Needs finer refinement.
Visually, I'm loosing details in the tentacle due to the specular, which doesn't seem to conform to the scaley pattern.

Sexy stuff :]

You really need to work into the metal parts a matrix pattern in the spec map. Something like how carbon fiber car parts look. Having details only seen in light would be a lovely detail for a creature that lives in the shadows.

noritsune
03-12-2007, 08:53 PM
looks super-pretty but for my taste, there is not enough drama happening in the texturing. TGZ's suggestion is a good one - I'd also wonder, what happens if you knock the diffuse layer down to nearly black, and crank your specularity to insane degrees, and leave the self-illuminated bit?

Emil Mujanovic
03-12-2007, 09:35 PM
Dude! RAD!
I'm assuming you've focused mainly on the skin so I won't have to tell you the metal/armour is looking a little plain at the moment. But I'm really digging the skin. Definitely a winner!

fan-fucking-tastic. the only thing i wanna say is that i think the spaces in-between the tentacles that make up his arms and legs could use just a little darkening, to make it more apparent that they're, well, bundled-up and repurposed tentacles. i think that's a great idea so you should really sell it.

This is really a great design, the head piece is doing a lot to give character, and the execution of the model/texture is awesome.

I did take the liberty of refining your design to it's simplest and purest state. A true masterpiece if I do say so myself. http://www.thetextureguy.com/screenies/manitae.jpg

You may have to start from scratch if you want the same results, but as you can see I have already done most of the dirty work.
