Pyschic monster from beyond the stars! /images/graemlins/confused.gif see if I get time to play as I am crunching my ass off right now.
Crunchy here too, Tim, but if anyone can manage it, you're the man /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-04-2007, 05:43 PM
Getting crunchy here soon...
Looking forward to see what you pump out dude.

"After the decimation of the polycount weapons planet the dark generals were forced to look deep into the void seeking there beings of untapped power.
The Manitae was found, deadly and ruthless it joined the ranks not only with the intention of spilling blood for polycount, but also with the intent to climb to greater power amoungst those who sought to utilize its strength.
Outside of its native plane of existence it found the need to bind its tentacles to enable it to traverse in a humanoid method of locamotion. Ruthless and cunning it assaults mortal minds with its telepathic powers, turning men against their own troops causing sabotage and chaos. Perhaps the more brutal fate befalls the machines that it encounters. Its Telekenis is unmatched, they machines are tossed like a unwanted childs toy, the gears jamming and systems failing as they are ripped apart from the inside.
However he finds the greatest pleasure holding his enemies before his eyes, crushing them in his python like grip. "
awesome man! can't wait to see how it'll turn out /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-05-2007, 01:40 AM
Tim this owns! I like your style man.
02-05-2007, 01:54 AM
Shit man, the concept look awesome, and I love the description. Can't wait to see some more. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-05-2007, 03:35 AM
kik ass... i'm already looking forward to this on its path to completion...
one suggestion (though i know everything probably isn't final yet): make the blue glowies into green glowies... considering our colours that is...
02-05-2007, 03:51 AM
GO FOR IT.
Personally I'm not sure about the big gut but hey, it's a smoking concept.
02-05-2007, 08:49 AM
Fear the Manitee!
cool shit, dude
02-05-2007, 08:57 AM
That rocks spacemonkey. Whod a thunk the manatee was so vicious.
02-05-2007, 02:00 PM
hey, are he's brains unarmored?
02-05-2007, 02:03 PM
Damn! I'm not even sure what I'm looking at, yet it's so totally sweet.
02-05-2007, 04:03 PM
im not feelin the split tentacle holding the staff thing, it just never seemed like a tentacle would be good for holding things like a hand. other than that i love where it is going. if you do stick with the tentacle, check out jason felix's site, he has a bad ass character with the tentacle deal.
keep it up
02-05-2007, 11:20 PM
richkid: when was the last time you went around holding shit with a tentacle, huh? just ask any giant squid, they seem to have no trouble not only holding, but tearing the main mast right off of friggin' frigates. not feeling the tentacles, pfeh! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
spacemonkey: thank you for showing the kids how it's done. you're crunching away, probably not even enough time to feed the missus and the kids back home a hot meal, and yet you're STILL posting a concept to rock socks every which way (and off).
while spacemonkeyish in many good ways, it's still very fresh. i really dont have much of anything in the way of crits or suggestions at this point, other than the token "do some thumbnails" bit. but i trust you'll have a horrible, unbeatable beastie in no time at the rate you're going. only fitting for a returning winner! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-05-2007, 11:39 PM
thanks guys, /images/graemlins/laugh.gif encouraging responses for that first draft w00t
dur23, who'd have thought that there is actually a manatee', I am a couple of letters away from a fat see elephant thing! haha! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Fear that fat!
richkid, its certainly not executed well in my peice... so it doesnt represent well - no holdies in this next sketch.. but that doesnt mean he wont /images/graemlins/smile.gif a mass of tentacles can holding things in very interesting ways!
Hey gauss, yeah the feedback is good - before I painted I drafted out a series of 5 A4 sketches.. refinging shapes and figuring out the elements I want to include. Thumbnails are damned good - and they helped me avoid some retro scifi stuff that creeped into that first sketch.. but after a day at work away from the pic I decided he felt too generic.
not enough flesh - too many humanoid elements.. boring and tired.. so I am hoping to push him further down the spiral.
The new sketch needs lots of elaboration and exploration but I think he's more on the right track /images/graemlins/wink.gif let me know what you think!
last year I rushed my design and I felt the pain of it later... if you read my interview its one thing I kicked my own ass about!
02-06-2007, 01:44 AM
I r bombardment (of wips)
02-06-2007, 02:48 AM
i like where this is going, this thing is going to be insane looking.
i did try grabbing a weapon once with my "tentacle", didn't fair so well, i would send some reference picks, but i dont know you that well. maybe if you buy me dinner
02-06-2007, 04:58 AM
awesome best concept i have seen yet for DW2 =)
02-06-2007, 05:08 AM
Go go pogo-cotopus!
02-06-2007, 01:31 PM
damn I have too many idea's.. my head! I think it might go under the hammer once or twice more - before I settle.
richkid, you free on Feb 14th? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Warby and jaskablade thanks!
02-06-2007, 01:41 PM
i liked the original concept, it had alot more recognizable shapes, the later ones got alot more blobby, i liked the idea of making some kinda squid thing that tries to emulate a humanoid, but is totally nonhuman
02-06-2007, 01:46 PM
iīm not a fan of these wired monster blumdigblub things.. but this one fits perfect for evil-polycoutn and i love these blue blubber-parts /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
all in all i think the 2. one nails the idear of this blumdigblub-thing a lot better down than the 1.
keep going workoholica /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-06-2007, 01:53 PM
hahaaa. thas for "consistent taste around us"
02-06-2007, 02:09 PM
Very, very cool looking, Spacemonkey.
02-06-2007, 02:12 PM
That's pretty freakin cool. The first idea may be more appropriate, having legs and arms. Maybe you can incorporate the two somehow.
02-06-2007, 03:42 PM

[/ QUOTE ]
I agree with rawkstar on this one.
02-06-2007, 03:55 PM
Still all too inspiring! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-06-2007, 06:04 PM
Oh dam! This is gonna be sweet!
I'll be watching this thread /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
02-06-2007, 06:08 PM
both are sweet but I do like the posture better in the first one too.
prefer the second face tho!
02-06-2007, 06:50 PM
Nice Spacemonkey, They're all very cool... I really like creepiness from the first sketch, keeping the arms reaching out(or doing something with purpose) while the tentacles lash about wildly. You get the impression of a crown or a Tiara that enhances psychic energy in the first sketch too which is pretty awesome... Maybe a tail is in order to sweep you back up into the upper body... The Metal pressed up against the flesh is gonna look awesome!!!!
02-06-2007, 11:00 PM
Tim, this is looking unbelievable man...I love it.
02-07-2007, 01:42 AM
rawkstar - yeah you was right, the second did degenerate into large blobbyness
rollin - its only work if your getting paid for it right? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif ha
struve - yeah mobility bugged me - so I added some!
almighty_gir, kongni thanks guys
rooster, yeah I prefer the second face - the first one was too skull - the second design has potential but the pose is a bit weak, so it doesnt sell well /images/graemlins/frown.gif but I still lub him! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
ThE_BirD, good point - the crown kind of lost its function in the second degenerated into a glorified helmet! The tail was a hot suggestion /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
parasite7, thanks KennY! give us a job at Blizzard ! laF!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-07-2007, 03:29 AM
man this is a great thread to show how to evolve an idea....latest incarnation is definitely the best...
02-07-2007, 04:05 AM
i like the mirrored text .... /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
imo the spikey head and the very smooth body (exept the back) arenīt fitting together very good yet..
but i think you only have to bring a bit of the idear of the head to the body or the other way
do you know what i ty to say with my superb english ? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-07-2007, 04:08 AM
i think that u should make the arms a biiiit bulkier, or reduce the 'length' of the head.
otherwise the thing is looking great...
02-07-2007, 05:02 AM
ohhhhh man psyhonics ftw.
I love the ideas good solid base here I'm not sure the tenticals work fo9r this guy yet I'd like to see where you are going with them....
I hope to see more.
02-07-2007, 09:25 AM
I liked the floaty one. Still badass though.
02-07-2007, 10:11 AM
Reminds me of the alien queen... badass!
i know it's just a concept, but could you move the feet forward somewhat? it looks like it's gonna fall over!
02-07-2007, 10:18 AM
This looks amazing. Cant wait to see the finished model.
02-07-2007, 10:25 AM
Some really awesome art going on here. Have to say that i loved the first one the best, the overall feeling of it, the fourth one looks kickass for sure, but reminds me way to much of the alien queen. I would go with something inbetween image one and three, to be more spicific, go with the image one, and add the floating device + head from image three, just my two cents /images/graemlins/wink.gif.
02-07-2007, 11:52 AM
Great start indeed. Its gonna be really awesome peace of triangles (!) /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
02-07-2007, 12:00 PM
i liked it better when it was floating /images/graemlins/frown.gif
02-07-2007, 12:30 PM
really reminds me of some halo upper chief creature, dunno its name.
Looks very cool though but more of a general rather than a soldier no?
Like the evolution of this character alot, much better form in the last concept, i think the head could be bigger and positioned slightly further forward on the body to make it more balanced. I think it would be good to give it a little more armor to, not much just on the shin's and top of the feet, or on the tip of the tail, or both. Think this will help the organic and technical elements tie in nicely as a whole, good job tho mate, keep up the fine work
02-08-2007, 08:23 PM
I'm really digging this latest iteration, I was going to say the arms look a little small. But T-Rex arms were small! I think the tentacles help with the proportions. Great stuff!
02-08-2007, 10:38 PM
kinda reminds me of Independants Day, almost in the same feel of a carlos huante character.
Dude, i love the drippy nether regions, icky and sticky
02-09-2007, 12:25 AM
rollin , hey rollin I think you'll find the they blend a little better now /images/graemlins/smile.gif its was a good point!
indian_boy yeah I reduced the length of the head- it was bugging me. the arm size... well I'll save my judgement till I see it in 3d /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
CitizenDown, tentacle rape? maybe in the final pose he can be violating some of the peeps from cgchat ? haha, in all seriousness I think he would be deadly in close combat with them, combined with the psychic powR is destruction.
Ninjas floaty was fun, but felt slow.. this guy needs that alien like agility for climing ceilings and chasing people down corridors. It just felt that with the hovering he would be a bullet magneT..
almighty_gir , yeah definately some alience.. I did a quick move of the feet but I'm more concerned about getting the right ideas down
JPSeiler he felt clunky to me, boring shapes although I liked the head gear - its certainly gave me the ideas for his evolution
Painbringer I hope's I get time to actually make him.. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
warby , yeah but he's a shadow killer.. not a ice cream vendor.. I liked it..but it wasnt right
Shady-D some Elites?? I dont know.. glad you like him /images/graemlins/smile.gif
stix I know I did some of what you mentioned, been adding some armour last day or so. He definately needed more balance
caseyjones thanks, well I did want those arms to feel small next to the power physical prescence of the tentacles - but in reality I wanted the small arms to be the conduits for his psychic power.
richkid well thats cool, I just bought 2 of Huante's books. Guess they were worth getting !
D'ANG! thats some critter you got there! I really like the tied squid tentacles forming an arm.. I would have never came up with such an idea /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.. excellent! btw.. he's standing on his tail..
02-09-2007, 12:36 AM
hey i really like the squid thing u got on the right shoulder. and i love the tail splitting into to (i didn't notice it earlier...)
but something about the leg are bugging me... not to be mean or sound irritating or anything... but they seem to be too similar to ur last one(Brood). The shape and all are good, but the "cyborgification" is.... almost typical? With ur calibre, i think u can show more creativity and style in the legs... just my two cents...
otherwise, i luv it... looks great and the thing u did with the head is just right
02-09-2007, 06:59 AM
Wow Space, very solid design so far! really liking where it is going /images/graemlins/wink.gif It will be an honor to face you in the battlefield (if i finish mine /images/graemlins/laugh.gif)
02-09-2007, 07:13 AM
realy like the body armor design /images/graemlins/smile.gif
but there is something what bugs me... not sure.. but i guess ists a problem with the legs for them self.. this thing seems not to have bones in itīs limbs.. but in itīs legs.. thats a bit wired.. this tentacles idear is superb but seems to stop before the legs..
but could also only be my stupid eye.. lalala
donīt mind.. this is super nice and i love to see it finished .. so gogogo /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-09-2007, 07:51 AM
omgz! he's stomping his own tail... that's hardcore
Lookin really sweet dude. Dig'n the tentacly skull armor.
not really sold on the swirly baby arms. it's a neat idea, but the concept could be pushed a lot better. maybe extra dangles that weren't long enough to get tied into the bunch? Anyway, it's partly the proportions (of the pseudo-arms) that bother me, and partly that it's a neat idea that doesn't pop out until you first realize that the muscle structure on the arm doesn't feel right at all. I mentally said to myself "Why did he do the muscle structure like that? That's all wrong, he knows better." and after examining more closely realized that it was a tangle of tentacles. I think you want that to pop out more. Instead of saying "that's wrong... oh wait.. neat..." you want "blah jtaw2 SWEEETqT!!!#!2#!" right? yeah.. you know this... so I think it's a neat idea that needs to get worked out better.. good luck. Dig'n your entry so far.
02-09-2007, 08:06 AM
ha thats nice.. i have no problems with the lil amrs..
so tim.. you have to decide what to do..
do you want jesica who is strong like hell and drives only in red winged washers
or simone, who has hardly a brain but could cook (like hell) and makes everything you want (or not)
or dou you want gila who is going to buy you a deamon toaster and loves playing burnitdown with you... and the toaster
everybody says something other
make up your mind NOW!! "blah jtaw2 SWEEETqT!!!#!2#!"
sure u make it!
btw .. i want the mirrored text back .. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
02-10-2007, 05:54 PM
will reply when I get this bitch finished.. so close
great stuff tim, i'm loving the techy armour, especially the shapes around the knee and lower leg.
02-10-2007, 06:20 PM
i am imagine human in his armor- could be totally win
02-10-2007, 06:23 PM
yeah liking it! maybe some kind of barbed weapon on the end of a tentacle he can whip with?
02-10-2007, 06:42 PM
Brilliant! The evolution of the concept has been fantastic, with definite improvement at each step. The squid on his shoulder is a great idea! /images/graemlins/grin.gif
02-10-2007, 07:55 PM
Holy shit. I need to get back to work, considering how far along you are...
02-10-2007, 10:59 PM
indian_boy - I've changed the shape of the legs to give them flow with the armour - they arent supposed to be cyborg, just armour enabling the tentacles to act as a leg.
Vitor , thanks seeya in the field
rollin , well the final idea is that the legs are formed with tentacles bound together - like the smaller arms - it should be pretty evident when I model them /images/graemlins/smile.gif
EricElwell - they arms didnt read that well there.. too many twists.. while its not 100% obvious from my fianl pic they are still bound , slightly plumper and there are les twists!
MoP -thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Askhat - definately not a human in there but certainly a creature trying to act like one
rooster - yeah I will definately give a weapon some thought.. it'd be a shame to not utilize the polies in some form!!!
Zcubed glad you liked it
vahl - thanks man;)
Noel Cower - well some guys are modelling already.. I wouldnt worry too much.. its all about pacing yourself anyway!
02-10-2007, 11:50 PM
dude that ROCKS! /images/graemlins/smile.gif mmm SPIKY STUFF!!!
02-11-2007, 01:55 AM
ohhhh jieee.. that is so damn .. kill rockn roll !!! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-11-2007, 02:49 AM
hot stuff - this beast is my favorit.
Your imagination is simply stupefied-amazing or stunnig /images/graemlins/ooo.gif,
don't which word is better to use in this case ,...
...maybe just "whoa" !!! /images/graemlins/wink.gif
02-11-2007, 03:10 AM
i love how the concept has it's own internal logic. looking at you think, this just has to work, right? /images/graemlins/smile.gif
the one area i think falls short is the exposed toes, since they're boneless there is no way they can support all that weight. he'd simply fall forward.
02-11-2007, 03:26 AM
I also think that the feet cant carry all the tech and the big tentacles. 4 legs would be an idea /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-11-2007, 03:48 AM
you could cover two or all toes with the armor ...
02-11-2007, 04:07 AM
I like the toes.. who says the tentacles arent super strong, have super thick skin, etc etc.. it looks cool /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-11-2007, 04:31 AM
That's the guy i want to party with. I bet the ladies love him.
02-11-2007, 05:52 AM
ahh... i misunderstood the earlier sketches...
but apart from that: i now luv the thing entirely... the legs match beautifully with the rest, and the idea of everything being tentacles is cool too (didn't realise it about the arms until u mentioned it)...
lovin the piece! can't wait to see it realised!
02-11-2007, 09:16 AM
I love this design and I think what makes it so strong is color scheme and the balance of curvy vs spiky shapes. Here's an idea for what you could do: add some spiky elements also on the feet, as a form of armor/support for tentacle ends, and that way you add some more of this contrast, and it could work nicely as all the spiky parts would almost go in the same direction and in addition they would make his "feet" look stronger and able to support all that weight.
02-11-2007, 10:23 AM
those armor pieces and the design in general is just awesome !! Definitly a strong entry /images/graemlins/smile.gif
what i really like about this piece is the cold/icy mood of the character. Almost like the early alien movies had.
He looks like he would feel cold to the touch and chill any enclosed space that he's in ..
A lot of character for a seemingly obvious demon/alien
02-11-2007, 01:59 PM
One thing that might help this piece some is some distinguishing features on the tentacles to distinguish top from bottom. Just like octopii have suction cups on the underneath, and snakes tend to have flat "bottoms" of their roundness, it gives you a clue as to how the tentacle is oriented. You might have already planned that, but right now they just read as round shapes and I think they could have more visual interest with a varying cross section.
02-11-2007, 02:02 PM
i still think maybe having two clawed arms in place of a couple of the tentacles would own...
02-12-2007, 03:43 PM
Amazing Concept Drawings your so gonna own this comp
02-12-2007, 04:03 PM
it almost seems unfair to be a part of the Polycount community...
The concept looks awesome so far, some octopus/squid like suction cups on those long tentacles could be a cool addition though.
02-12-2007, 05:46 PM
I got an idea for you, why not have the legs be tentacles all all packed together into the shape of legs, and also for the small arms. Its just a creepy idea to have this creature trying to make its self look more human by packing its self into the human shapes. Also i love ben's idea of going more octopus tentacles for them.
02-12-2007, 07:01 PM
aw, i liked his fingers bound together to make two bigger fingers. it was my kind of kinky!
He/she/it definitely needs some bulk in the cod piece, even if just a little bit, to get rid of the textured-bikini-bottom look.
I'd also go ahead and add a pink feather boa for that extra bit of contrast to really make him pop.
my awesome crits aside, this whole thread makes my pants tight.
02-12-2007, 07:40 PM
Some people have mentioned not seeing the distinct tentacles being bound to form the limbs. I eventually put two and two together after staring at the toes for a lil while, but it took some time to dig them out, so to speak. If you're wanting to do another concept pass, emphasizing that aspect a tad bit more would be great, otherwise I'm sure we'll be seeing it in 3D soon and our questions will be answered. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-12-2007, 07:53 PM
More and more awesomeness, each time i look at this tread. I'm already liking the concept better then your winning character last year. /images/graemlins/grin.gif
02-13-2007, 01:54 AM
There will be tentacle love for everyone, ok?
I gots to BED. I'll respond tomorrow after sleep /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-13-2007, 03:31 AM
really great work man, I cant wait to see the rest of him
someone give him a tic-tac stat
02-13-2007, 05:40 AM
wait, is that mudboxing with a paint over? How many polies is it already lol?
i can't wait to see it develop... it's gonna be killer!
02-13-2007, 05:46 AM
Mmmmmm....Mudbox tentacles /images/graemlins/smile.gif
after looking at it some more... I have the urge to grab his lower tenticles and milk them like a cow teat... mmm milk. Wonder if he'd mind... might like it, oh snap.
02-13-2007, 07:37 AM
wow ! something great smells !!!
02-13-2007, 08:43 AM
Modeling start looks tremendous. I can't wait to see the whole gig! /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
02-13-2007, 12:57 PM
... Wow. /images/graemlins/blush.gif
02-13-2007, 04:59 PM
mui bueno. youre one of the ones who are at the top of my list of who's going to win. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
that made sense right....
02-13-2007, 10:31 PM
...(deep breath)...man,...dude...i...i...fuck it
02-15-2007, 02:21 AM
u do what to it richkid?
umm... don't mean to be an annoying little brat but:
"i wanna update! :boo-hoo: where is update!"
seriously though... even if u only added an extra stripe to the iris... me wanna see! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-15-2007, 02:30 AM
Incredible start, you're really kicking ass dude!
02-15-2007, 02:28 PM
I'm loving this, can't wait to see the finish result!
02-15-2007, 08:45 PM
good start. But you know about it /images/graemlins/wink.gif
02-16-2007, 01:46 AM
I have a head ache tonight so I need to go bed early :O (1.45 am) :_(
Stunning stuff as usual Tim. The forms overall are really quite chilling.
If I had to crit though, I feel like some of the micro forms could be more considered. The face suffers a tiny bit from detail for the sake of detail, without you having put a ton of contemplation into it. He seems to be in some kind of mid open mouthed expression, perhaps rage, and yet the direction of the wrinkles dont seem to follow what the face is doing at all, thus making the facial expression feel somewhat confused. Linky If what Im saying isn't making sense: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=51960977&size=o In an open mouthed pose, it would seem to me to feel a lot more natural If the folds in the face were more vertical along the sides of the mouth than diagonal as you have them. Hope this makes sense. Clearly I'm nitpicking here, and this is well on the way to being a leading contender. Have a good kip /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-16-2007, 02:24 AM
as I sit in my chair and yawn i stumble across this....Yep, im not sleeping tonight, got some ground to catch up on.
sorry for your headache, but thanks for the modivation.
02-16-2007, 02:51 AM
/images/graemlins/ooo.gifwow.... just wow /images/graemlins/ooo.gif
02-16-2007, 03:16 PM
I'm not really liking the tentacles... I think I'd rather see some long limbed arms in their place.
But beyond that... This is looking quite fantastic!
Keep up the great work
02-16-2007, 09:39 PM
Awesome head! That's what it's about /images/graemlins/cool.gif
02-17-2007, 03:01 AM
cant sleep so I worked on things, finally after hours of tweaking I decided that legs just arent going to work! The legs had bugged the hell out of me in the concept phase and I decided to remove them ;D
Kill your babies!
Daz - its a good point and I will be amending him some later! (although not entirely, just enough to suggest a little more realistic muscle group there)
stimpack, jerry well thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif
foreverendering arms are so 2006! /images/graemlins/wink.gif
struve, haha! It doesnt get much better than awesome head /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
02-17-2007, 04:40 AM
reminds me heavily of an old Quake4 concept now u've got rid of the legs :[
02-17-2007, 12:01 PM
This is stellar, Tim, but I really preferred the concept with the legs. Standing upright makes the guy far more intimidating and also gives you a chance to play with all those great armor designs.
Anyways, I'm sure you've thought this all through already. More updates please! /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
02-17-2007, 12:05 PM
yeah i liked the legs better too, but this still rocks!!!
02-17-2007, 12:16 PM
Hey Spacemonkey, I have to agree with the rest of the group (which I hate, as I like to pretend that I can have an original thought). But with the removal of the legs, which in my opinion added a variation to the design to help accentuate the snake like arms and help push the eye up to the head, makes your eye now lose its focus. Don't get me wrong, I still love the design and concept of this guy, but he just has lost some of the interesting shapes that I liked. But I have no worries in what you will do, as I know it will be kickass.
02-17-2007, 12:53 PM
looks too much like a Zerg without the legs =[
02-17-2007, 01:51 PM
I like the new way you are taking and it is going to be exciting to se what new direction you are taking with the lower body. Although i loved the design of the legs ^_^
02-17-2007, 02:29 PM
Thanks for the feedback - I like the powerful snake like' body, but it doesnt scream being from another dimension trying to fit in a - which is what this guy was all about so I will take a second look at the legs today - a good sleep always results in a fresh perspective on an old problem /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-18-2007, 01:44 AM
Nothing wrong with the power of three you have going on with the top, but why not pull it down to the base. Why have two legs when he has 6 arms,it would make more sense to have three legs so that he has three sides all with three appendages.
Maybe even with the "hands" ones give then a three prong split at the end to hold shit. I like to think this thing is what evolution creates out of worms when they are the main predator in a dimension.
02-19-2007, 05:02 PM
i wanna see the radical changes...cause so far its all been radical. that seriously look good man, keep up the good work
02-20-2007, 12:58 AM
Definately changes underway, I have also devised his weapon so I guess I'll have to find time to work on that too :_(
02-20-2007, 12:59 AM
i lub u!
02-20-2007, 01:26 AM
nice work spacemonkey! you really want that ps3 badly don't you? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
i like how all the tiny details come together to make him look almost like an asian god at first glance. everything radiating out from the face...brilliant. good use of repeating elements too.
too bad you can't keep this color scheme, as the black tentacles look kickass as they are. maybe a three tone scheme for the tentacles? from charcoal to mute purple to white. yeah, just my thoughts. KICKASS!
02-20-2007, 01:34 AM
holy crap, cool
02-20-2007, 01:44 AM
02-20-2007, 02:04 AM
Great update man, thats fuken kick-ass......
Damn, that's bloody cool mate
damn thats sexy! /images/graemlins/cool.gif
02-20-2007, 03:15 AM
You are a modeling machine! Fuckin wicked!
02-20-2007, 03:58 AM
I'm very glad your model is coming along. I appreciate the fact that you're setting a good tone for the contest as well. I hope you have success with the model, I like the progression very much.
02-20-2007, 06:47 AM
02-20-2007, 07:04 AM
This is awsome, nuff said.
soooooooooo freaking nice. Do you use edit poly tool for the modeling of the armor?
02-20-2007, 08:15 AM
That's pretty amazing work dude.
02-20-2007, 08:23 AM
Oh yeah, give me some tongue baby! /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
-Such tiny detail, I wonder if it will normal map correctly.
-Awesome stuff bro!
02-20-2007, 09:37 AM
Dam dude, just Dam....
02-20-2007, 09:54 AM
Better with each update - Keep going!
02-20-2007, 10:19 AM
Hey Tim, great work for sure. Seriously interested in how you will be handling the low geometry for the design, but I am sure you can pull it off.
02-20-2007, 11:02 AM
when i saw it: "ooh myy god that is fucking awesome."
02-20-2007, 11:23 AM
02-20-2007, 11:33 AM
insane, nice work!
02-20-2007, 12:21 PM
Now I've gotta go for surgery, my jaw won't come off the floor /images/graemlins/blush.gif
Personally I'm unsure about the padded areas where the tentacles begin, or maybe it's just my unfamiliarity with sci-fi samurai aliens.
02-20-2007, 01:24 PM
Tentaculer!! I'm not the kind of person who usually leaves a comment just to say Great job without a critique but That's looking insanely detailed and well done. The detail you've added does not detract from the major flow of the character and i like that alot, attention to detail but not to excess. I'm definitely checking this daily to see the progress! i'm hoping i can develop such a strong concept before i begin modelling. More More Go GO!! must absorb more eye candy the little ones are hungry!
02-20-2007, 03:20 PM
Yeah... that's average :P
But seriously, it's looking really nice. I like the detail on the armour, very crisp. It's really nice seeing this come to life with every iteration.
02-20-2007, 04:01 PM
02-20-2007, 04:21 PM
HOT STUFF /images/graemlins/shocked.gif
02-20-2007, 07:16 PM
i don't mean to be a downy clowny, but i'm not feeling that armor design. theres verry few mid level details,, its all big forms, and then its all small fine details, a bunch of really thin straps and screw things, that i think will come off pretty flat feeling on the normal map,
good luck tho!
02-20-2007, 10:52 PM
Looking really good, your character keeps on getting better and better but I have to agree with <font color="green">Rhinokey</font> there is alot of super high detail but you may find trouble holding the same about of detail when you use the displancement(normal) map. More mid range details will show better and then you can probably got the small cool stuff with a good bump map.
My two-bits... this is looking great /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-21-2007, 09:45 AM
Whatever you do, DON'T MESS WITH THE HEAD! I love it so...
02-21-2007, 02:12 PM
kewl, can you show wires? really interesting how it looks
02-21-2007, 07:05 PM
Only one word i can say...Awesome!
02-21-2007, 08:02 PM
oh my god.... *drools*
02-21-2007, 08:58 PM
But I don't know, it seems to be missing something without its legs. However, the tentacles go well with the snake body.
02-21-2007, 10:44 PM
Nice! Im liking the armor alot.
02-23-2007, 03:05 AM
jesus h christ the 3rd. i just giggled like a school girl at the thought of that rippin into some poor unsuspecting robot =)
02-23-2007, 08:50 PM
BALLIN!!! i cant give any crits... just worship. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-24-2007, 04:47 AM
I just shit my pants. Sorry but this thing is amazing. Holy fuck. I offer my child as sacrifice to the 3d gods after seeing this thing. My poor robot /images/graemlins/frown.gif
02-25-2007, 12:51 AM
the encouragement is great, thanks all
struve - well I'm a detail whore but I totally admit I might have to scale up some of the stitching to get it to read ok - I'll see how its goes and make changes when my rendermesh is ready
Rhinokey - no need to be that downy clown! /images/graemlins/smile.gif Its a good point to bring up the missing medium range stuff and I agree its possible for it work against me. I want to minimize larger shapes that might require polies in the rendermesh because he has so many appendidges that will eat into the polycount. To keep him visually interesting I added the detail and intend to create contrast through material changes. I guess we'll know how it turns out in a few weeks!!
So i need to do more mudboxing for the various tentacles and get them ready to roll. Head needs some tweaks and the crown is still rough. Hoping to have the detailmesh finished this weekend so I can get my rendermesh done next week and make some headway with the textures and shaders.
02-25-2007, 12:58 AM
Looking really amazing. Not much to be said but that /images/graemlins/smile.gif
great work man, it's coming along really nicely, can't wait to see it finished /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
realy amazing work , great job !
Awesome man, it has such great proportions and weight.
Very cool stuff Tim, I love his pose and armour. Bloody love what you've done with the legs too, very cool idea to bunch up the tentacles and clamp them together with the boots to form squishy tentacle-feet... great stuff! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
However one fairly major crit I'd give is that the big tentacle on his back is looking pretty basic, even though you seem to have gone quite a long way with detailing... it's suffering from that thing where there's not enough basic interesting shape (ie. it's just a cylinder) and then it's got wrinkles and stuff on top.
I'd probably drop down a couple of sub-d levels and push the shape into something more tentacley (flatter on the bottom, rounded on the top with a frill-like area around the edges).
Apart from that it's shaping up really well, keep it up! /images/graemlins/wink.gif
02-25-2007, 03:42 AM
I'm kinda agree with MoP on the tentacle stuff, but exept that point, I'm completly speakless... AWESOME DESIGN and EXECUTION. I like the fact you came back to some kind of "real" legs. I wasn't liking that much the older idea. Now, he's perfect, I think /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-25-2007, 03:55 AM
well, there's the update i was waiting for, and apart from making me fall in love, giving me a random erection, and causing alot of drool on the keyboard.... it hasn't done much.....
lol, this is FRIGGIN AWESOME! i like the fact that the legs are back, it wouldn't be "complete" without them...
wow, im really speechless... i don't even know what all to compliment....
02-25-2007, 04:10 AM
woooow really nice stuff!
02-25-2007, 04:35 AM
02-25-2007, 08:49 AM
Very nice /images/graemlins/smile.gif I like that his legs look like they are comprised of tentacles working in unison, bound by his armor
I think this guy has a great silhouette too - very cool
02-25-2007, 11:40 AM
02-25-2007, 12:44 PM
this be the Shit man, F-in wicked!
02-25-2007, 05:55 PM
I'm glad you went with the legs and not the snake body, its looking amazing!
02-25-2007, 06:07 PM
winning material id say
02-25-2007, 07:04 PM
Holy freakin WHAT???? That is withou question the coolest thing I have ever seen. Ever. It is so cool in fact (with its legs instead of snake body), that I am going to construct a shrine to hnor not only its visage, but also its creator, the divine Spacemonkey. I will start a religion based upon worshipping it. And that's just the WIP. Fanatastic!
02-25-2007, 08:39 PM
This is looking GREAT! My favorite part is the tentacle-feet. The decision to go back to legs was a good one. Very nice stuff!
02-25-2007, 10:50 PM
hehe yeah, lots of tiny details and the silhouette is looking great, but not a whole lot on the mid scale detail stuff, just scale some of those smaller pieces up, when its done should look right at home for gears of war /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-26-2007, 06:21 AM
that's a pretty confident stance for an invertebrate trying to be a biped...the suit's really effective. /images/graemlins/smile.gif it's a shame he's got close to human proportions though... it was a perfect opportunity to go crazy with long limbs etc.
still, great execution. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-26-2007, 08:12 AM
ha ha, jokes on you snowfly! there are many octopi that walk bipedaly. fear the tentacled ones!
the excessive use of tentacles has cemented this entry deep within my heart, in a special place.
02-26-2007, 08:40 AM
Dude, you never fail to impress, nice work.
02-26-2007, 10:05 AM
Don't get me wrong, your model is bad A$$, but honestly is that enough? The vengance of the side of LIGHT will be done!
The slap has struck again! CGCHAT FTW!
02-26-2007, 02:59 PM
it looks incredible, keep doing what you're doing dude.
02-26-2007, 03:41 PM
what a f... great model here ..detaisl you put on this is impressive ...
well nothing to say mor ejust whaou.!!
02-27-2007, 03:40 AM
you know spacemonkey i just want to stop in and say that this entry is impressive for a lot of reasons, but i'm most impressed with how much progress it represents against your only REAL competition--yourself, from last year.
last year was far from bad, but i think this year shows just how much further you've come in all areas--notably in the concept and overall ingenuity/consistency of the design. but i'll keep my mouth shut from now until you get your baby to its finished, glossy shine. keep the updates coming, man /images/graemlins/smile.gif
02-27-2007, 10:43 AM
Goddamnit, this model is impressive FTW
looks good man! right on time...good designs...:) letīs see how the lowpoly turns out.
02-28-2007, 11:59 PM
03-02-2007, 11:06 AM
wow... very cool, you poly jerks and your tenticles!
03-02-2007, 02:56 PM
I agree my fella onelung ,thats a cool shadow man...
03-03-2007, 07:50 AM
Very nice work spacemonkey, definitely a step up from last years piece which already was very impressive.
03-04-2007, 01:00 AM
Cridder ,vahl ,gwad ,Jaco,Renaud Galand,indian_boy,Japhir,rooster ,foreverendering, struve, Graff Pirate, caseyjones, warby, Dread_Reaper, Bashomaru,Xaltar, FistFullofSlap /images/graemlins/smile.gif, killingpeople, daghen ,Painbringer,DDS thanks!
MoP - I took your adivce and I changed the shape quite of the tentacle - I dont think the rendermesh pic I am posting really represents it so I'll probally have to tweak and I'll certainly post a finished highpoly screen too
rawkstar - if this part time project looks anything like something gears I will be very happy /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Snowfly - interesting idea's if there wasnt a pressing deadline I think it would have been fun to play with the pose/proportions and really emphasize the alien aspect
gauss well your astute advice or observations are always welcome, as are everyone else's! This is definately working out to be more fun than last years and your right its all about seeing how far everyone has pushed themselves in the last year.
hawken, heh I hope we win, I certainly think we have enough talent in these forums to retain Dominance
onelung, kipiripi thanks guys your guys are doing some great work over on the cgchat
SkullboX thanks /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Depth of field fakery inspired by mops great renders
Lots of mesh and normal map tweaks to be done but I think I have a solid base to proceed with! Sadly I couldnt render an ambient occlusion map on my crappy pc.. not enough ram (1gig)
03-04-2007, 01:15 AM
Still rocks /images/graemlins/wink.gif
My only crit is that it looks kinda bussy from this view, my eyes are drawn an all different directions at once till I force them to look at specifics. Maybe a few less spikes?
that, sir, is busy!!!
good work man /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
and for the ambocc : you may want to consider this tool :
Awesome work! I couldn't tell that it was the lowpoly, it is right?
I wonder if you could use a tweaked version of the blue channel of your normal map as an ambient occlusion map? I did some tests and it looked ok. Or I could just be talking and seeing bullshit /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
03-04-2007, 03:03 AM
Loving it man, this guy is absolutely insane.
Also, I'd like to say that while it's busy, IMO the spikes actually are pulling my eye to a common point (His head).
03-04-2007, 03:29 AM
ha your cheating !! damn your faster than i but iīll get y /images/graemlins/wink.gif
and this looks indeed very cool /images/graemlins/smile.gif
keep on rollin .. (<.. thats me /images/graemlins/wink.gif )
03-04-2007, 04:13 AM
Great normal map! I would like to see a wire.
Why not rendering it in parts so you can render the ambient occlusion map?
03-04-2007, 09:06 AM
looking good sir! i'm amazed it's still in the poly budget given all that surface area...looking forward to the colors
03-04-2007, 10:19 AM
ditto.. considering the bastard time I'm having fitting everything to 6000 and retaining the shape I'm very impressed
03-04-2007, 02:27 PM
Are you using a bump map with a normal or is it all normal mapping? If it is all normal mapping I can see why your CPU is having troubles making a AO map, too many things for the computer to think about. I suggest that you try and use your Normal map only for the really large/med stuff and use a Bump map for the small details (if you are not doing so already). This would make it that the computer has less surface area to read and you "should" be able to create an AO map. It will also cut down render time. And if this works and you feel you still want to use only Normal map you should have a decent AO map that it will look like you were able to do with only a Normal map.
My two-bits. This is looking really great /images/graemlins/smile.gif
03-04-2007, 03:05 PM
Jaco is right; use the blue channel from your normal map for an AO map. It's not the best, but if you have no other choice; it works.
03-04-2007, 04:15 PM
you can render the AO with the normal details , when your pc doesnt handle it its the best solution in my opinion /images/graemlins/smile.gif
03-04-2007, 04:55 PM
u suck D:
i love it!
03-04-2007, 06:40 PM
I have a similar problem with the AO, I'm going to have to bake it in localised chunks + stitch in PS (and the normal map)
03-04-2007, 11:37 PM
first it was hard to see it with all of the tears in my eyes, than it was hard to cry for help when i was choking on the fact that it is the low poly...
game over, that is insane, if this wasnt so long already i would say that i am speachless.
03-05-2007, 01:43 AM
polycount is 5,509 still have the tongue to add to that and then I'll distribute the polies as I need to the tentacles (for the final poses) /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Thanks for the suggested methods guys.. I tried to render to texture from my normal map today and I got a blue screen.. my graphics card fan is broken so I have to cool it with a regular fan .. so I'm thinking I might have to replace the old thing!
so far no AO map, I might try rendering on my laptop.. but I'll see how it goes.
oh yeah colour change.. I just not feeling to cold tones right now so I'm firing it up.
03-05-2007, 03:36 AM
I loved the cold tones you had before, made it seem superior and futuristic, a calm killer, he's in control (makes me think of the Tau saying "The patient hunter always gets it's prey).
But you will probably change my mind later on when I see a more finished piece;), its hard to judge so early in the texturing stage.
03-05-2007, 03:54 AM
whatever you do.. blueish tentacles and red armor or switched.. not red red not blue blue
only my thoughts /images/graemlins/smile.gif
keep going.. i want to fight with you on my side .. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif /images/graemlins/wink.gif
03-05-2007, 06:39 AM
I'm going to have to agree with what's already been said. I was really digging the cool colors, and I think the warm, firey tones are a bit overkill. Maybe you can change my mind, but if I were you, I'd maybe make the change a bit less drastic. Going from cool grays and blues to bright, warm reds and yellows was quite a different direction, and changes the character completely in my opinion.
03-05-2007, 09:17 AM
03-05-2007, 09:30 AM
agreed about the blue and gray tones, but your work pretty much speeks for itself so im interested in what your going to do with the red and yellow tones as well. Eiter way its going to be kick ass im sure.
03-05-2007, 11:56 AM
fantastic work, can't wait to see it textured
03-05-2007, 12:08 PM
Either way it will be excellent, but the original color scheme (greyish skin, blue glowies, black armor) seemed to fit the model much more than this new color scheme. This monster of your looks like some kind of hideous alien despot, some great Emperor or something. The blues and greys and blacks just seemed to make him look terrifying in his magnificence. This new color scheme does seem a bit overkill. He's already scary.
03-05-2007, 12:30 PM
i think cold variation is better
03-05-2007, 02:10 PM
If you haven't already, you may want to try xNormal to render your AO from high to low. Since it is not loading the model for vieweing, it may use less RAM.
03-05-2007, 05:09 PM
dude wtf ... the colors ? D:
03-05-2007, 06:36 PM
Octopus usually turn bright red or show off some vibrant patterns (http://animalreviews.zelica.net/assets/octopus3.jpg) when they're pissed off - "I'm the octopus, bitch. Don't screw with me."
With that in mind, the red doesn't seem like such a bad idea, though a whole lot of variation from the body to the tips of the tentacles would probably work well.
03-06-2007, 12:36 AM
ok so good adivce! I Think DreadReaper nailed it, its was feeling too royal, not enough shadow. I just felt like painting red! >:E but he'll look better with these tones - which is obviously very early in texturing
Edit: updated the screens because of bad compression :O
03-06-2007, 02:42 AM
yeah thats more like it!
03-06-2007, 05:27 AM
I definitely like the new textures more. He looks like a cold, ruthless killer now. I'm looking forward to seeing this badass finished. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
03-06-2007, 07:31 AM
Not sure if I like the new colours more than the original ones. But it sure is better than the Red only version:) Looking forward to see this beast complete:)
Better, maybe try grey instead of brown on the tentacles?
03-06-2007, 08:10 AM
looks great man, definitly one of my faves so far.
03-06-2007, 08:43 AM
i think that if you get a good colour scheme something more saturated would be cool, im sick of greyscale models...
03-06-2007, 11:21 AM
sick, eventually a game should be made with all these bad ass dom war models
03-06-2007, 12:59 PM
Gorgeous work tim! I like the new colors better than the red and yellow. although I think the blue is a bit out of place. I would push it more to the purple color that you already have for the armor. A winner for sure, I've got to bring mine up to speed and quick!
03-07-2007, 10:35 AM
great stuff! realy amazing! i would use the blue/teal colour you used in the very early concepts in stead of the one you have now, and i think what jaco said would also look cooler!
keep it up!
03-07-2007, 11:35 AM
Also, another thing you may want to try to get your AO to bake is to run an Optimize modifier on your high model and then collapse the stack-- you will lose some detail, but not really that much, depedning on the settings you need.
03-07-2007, 12:20 PM
careful spacemonkey--as I recall, you got into some late-period color noodling with your Dominance War entry from last year. But I have confidence you'll sort it all out. Photoshop color comping is your friend!
03-07-2007, 04:27 PM
Dude, I only just now noticed that the limbs are made of tenticles. Awesome idea.
I see there is a bit of a mess at the top of the gloves tho where two of the tenticles blend together a bit. Some creative texture work should solve that tho.
03-08-2007, 01:40 AM
rooster, jgarland, ChaoticCreature ,Titan369 ,bounchfx ,Japhir - thanks !
Jaco dont worry its undercontrol /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Johny yeah sometimes a low chroma scheme cane be just what the character needed, but I hope he wont feel completely colourless when done. Lots of work to do yet
mvelasquez thanks well I've still really got all the work to do so things may change a little but i definately have the direction down now
Ninjas, yeah lots of good suggestions in this thread now /images/graemlins/wink.gif I know i can get by without one but if I do get a render going its going to have to be in max to keep the trace distance consistancy
gauss, hey no always here with good advice! yeah this year I have decided now what i'm doing and I'm excited about getting the texture undeway /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I have a little skin tone scheme ready just need to implement those tones
Xaltar yeah theres a couple o normal map bloopers but I am systematically fixing them in photoshop /images/graemlins/smile.gif
funny thing, my graphics card on my pc died tonight! I can only get the machine to run in safe mode now.. but fortunately I have a laptop so I ported my relevant files over.
But I'm happy with the direction now /images/graemlins/cool.gif
/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Yes, thats looking pretty damn good! I'm eagerly awaiting the next update, this keeps on getting better and better.
Hope youre able to revive or replace that graphics card soon!
yeah, this is looking awesome!!!! I do smell a winner, keep on the good work.
03-08-2007, 09:47 AM
I'd really like to see some saturated color on the tentacles, where they're closest to the body. Maybe a dark red or orange. Something warm to help separate his flesh from his armor. I think it would help add depth to his character and species in general. They're not born in armor that perfectly matches their skin tone, are they? I imagine he's a Shadow by profession, not birth.

I agree with Sectaurs but I also think that the underside of the tentacles should be a lighter colour then the top like a starfish.
My two-bits /images/graemlins/smile.gif Looking really good.

i agree about the 2-coloured tentacles, it would give some calm variations in colour aswell (ie, dont make the 2 colours pink and green). This way, you'd be able to tell that the arms/legs are bunched up tentacles (cuz they'll be a different colour where two tentacles meet if u c what im saying?)
Other than that, this colour choice is way better than the other one which was rightfully called "royal-looking".
Shaping up to be real awesome. Having this in the frame is enough of a 'beauty' shot, so that's one less thing u have to worry bout rendering /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

cool, but i think blue parts could me more sea colorish, with patterns in.

The specular happenin on that large tentacle (i imagine it's similar on the smaller ones too) doesn't look right to me.
It's either: A) Too Powerful. or B) Needs finer refinement.
Visually, I'm loosing details in the tentacle due to the specular, which doesn't seem to conform to the scaley pattern.
Sexy stuff :]

haha.. i see we both take the black/gold colorscheme.. only that i use green-glow and you blue.. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
but its getting realy nice.. maybe try (if you donīt) to give the tentacles a root-to-end gradient in brightness or/and saturation .. just came in my mind when i see it .. donīt mind /images/graemlins/blush.gif
keeep it up /images/graemlins/smile.gif
that is just so cool! a-maze-ing.

You really need to work into the metal parts a matrix pattern in the spec map. Something like how carbon fiber car parts look. Having details only seen in light would be a lovely detail for a creature that lives in the shadows.

looks super-pretty but for my taste, there is not enough drama happening in the texturing. TGZ's suggestion is a good one - I'd also wonder, what happens if you knock the diffuse layer down to nearly black, and crank your specularity to insane degrees, and leave the self-illuminated bit?

I'm assuming you've focused mainly on the skin so I won't have to tell you the metal/armour is looking a little plain at the moment. But I'm really digging the skin. Definitely a winner!

fan-fucking-tastic. the only thing i wanna say is that i think the spaces in-between the tentacles that make up his arms and legs could use just a little darkening, to make it more apparent that they're, well, bundled-up and repurposed tentacles. i think that's a great idea so you should really sell it.

Sweet... merciful... CRAP!
I love you.

This is really a great design, the head piece is doing a lot to give character, and the execution of the model/texture is awesome.
I did take the liberty of refining your design to it's simplest and purest state. A true masterpiece if I do say so myself. http://www.thetextureguy.com/screenies/manitae.jpg
You may have to start from scratch if you want the same results, but as you can see I have already done most of the dirty work.
