Comp 27 is over, is a voting thread going up soon?

What's the next comp all about?

I say something simple with the blizzard drawing a lot of game, but since we just did a low poly challenge maybe something different.

Possibly a Bad Ass Texture comp?
Any theme game level texture
1x512x512 diffuse with optional normal, spec, glow
Present it as well as you like. On a box or in a scene, it's all up to you.

I was kinda hoping for a low poly character comp, now I have gotten my feet wet in MAX I want to enter a comp /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe ultra low poly characters with 16 or 256 color textures no normals or spec on a single 128x128 texture.
Half life one models anyone?

bearkub
08-21-2006, 10:21 AM
Remember, Marvel is not happy with having their assets modeled unless they are getting bank for it. Prolly better to go with something a tad more generic.

I like the hi-poly sculpting idea, but it's fairly hard to put any kind of easy-to-follow constraint on it.

My suggestion would be a 1500-2000 poly "famous vehicle" such as Airwolf, the Dukes of Hazard car, the batmobile (any generation) the Back to the Future delorean. You get the idea.

the attraction to doing something like marvel is that it's recognisable, especially if low poly. The main problem with making your own is that we really couldn't offer up enough time for the character development.

I still don't see why it would be a problem to do marvel lowpoly, no one is going to come nocking on PC's door for fan art, but if it's out, then it's out.

A while back, we had a discussions about it awarding icons or “challenge ## winner” under their name, and for a while Hawken had all those example icons under his username. Ebagg was awarded “Challenge #25 Winner!” under his name; fogmann won Challenge #26 and received nothing.

Personally, I don’t mind either way, but for community and building interest in the challenges I believe consistency is important. Is this concept still on or another good idea that fell through?

I like the idea of a Christmas-themed environmental scene with mid-range (Wii) technical limitations. I'm not exactly sure about the permutations on the theme. Doing a "Christmas-gone-bad" theme would definitely be entertaining. (I keep seeing an image of Santa caught in the engine of a 747) But it would also be somewhat limiting. But I suppose that's kind of the point of these challenges. Placing them inside a clearly defined framework is half the challenge.

I fully support a Christmas-gone-bad challenge. (maybe someone could do an environment of a Christmas-themed console launch, complete with line-waiting and violent muggings)

hawken
12-03-2006, 03:14 AM
christmas in space is getting my vote currently, keeping it very open.

christmas gone bad implies a scene or a story, I don't think anyone has time to do something like that, turn out would be low.

Christmas in space could be virtually anything. A little asteroid with christmas trees, or santa with a space helmet. Ok well they are the only two ideas I have right now...

Christmas in space sounds way more limiting and clichéd than christmas gone bad.
I don't think "xmas gone bad" implies a scene or story, you could do anything from an evil elf to a monstrous reindeer, or you could do an interesting environment if you didn't wanna do a character or creature.

Xmas in Space, and Robot Xmas could easily fit into Xmas Gone Bad with a little bit of creativity...and a better title. Xmas Amiss, or Twisted Xmas. Something like that, less limiting. Either way, it's perfectly fine to put a space helmet on Santa, or throw him into a jet engine...if you want to. I'd try for something more creative.

So, I vote we speed things up since Xmas comes but once a year. And some of us go on vacation.

Vailias

Aye either of those works well
Xmas Amiss or Twisted Xmas. As they rhyme and allow for lots of creativity.

How about Star wars Fauna? using the various star wars books and other online resources as refference... only one catch! Can't be an animal that was in any of the 6 movies.

It's a little shindig where we ("We are the champions" background music.)point and laugh from the deep end of the pool while the folks at cgchat wear floaties and dog paddle.

I'm just throwing this out here for a future challenge: model an actor as one of your favorite characters from a comic, book, video game, etc...

I plan on doing this anyway, I call dibs on Johnny Depp as Dream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_%28comics%29) from Sandman and Ben Kingsly as Herr Starr (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herr_Starr) from Preacher.

I was going to suggest some sort of environment/fixture challenge and then I had an idea that should please everyone. Model your interpretation of a chess piece, you could model them as the character they represent or make it look like a castle or whatever the heck you want.

hawken
04-24-2007, 01:11 AM
we did that back in 2005 / 2006

and environments get low turn outs. (except for polycount village)

I got a PM about a decent challenge.

I thought the chess piece character was done 6-8 months ago. Maybe it was on another board.

Xaltar
04-24-2007, 04:09 PM
That was board game pieces if I remember correctly. I was planning on doing a knight but never got a chance to work on it. I think it should be something else.Maybe something involving sculpting tools like Mud and Z?

hawken
04-24-2007, 06:36 PM
nah it was this board. (I tried to find the original thread, but search is futile on this forum engine /images/graemlins/wink.gif as we all know)

model a board-game character contest.

Not saying it's a bad idea, I love battle chess. But people had the chance to do it last time and there was only ONE entry from chess, which wasn't finished.

Marisa
04-24-2007, 07:52 PM
I say make it a twist of an environment type thing so us environment guys can get some action.

hawken
04-25-2007, 12:00 AM
To be honest Marisa, env challenges don't work very well here.

I'm currently thinking along the lines of a texture challenge to compliment the last challenge. In negotiations to get a good, unseen, model. From someone we all love on the boards, so sit tight /images/graemlins/smile.gif If another mod wants to run the chess challenge while I get this asset...

Another idea was to make something with no mass. Spirits and elementals.

Joao Sapiro
04-25-2007, 02:14 AM
Lol , even if you are environment why not give it a shot ? might learn new stuff, dont limit yourself.

Cybroxide
04-25-2007, 03:13 AM
Has there ever been a vehicle challenge?
[edit]
Also i love the sprite/elemental idea

MoP
04-25-2007, 04:52 AM
Vehicles would be fun. But I still think the Chess one is best.
The problem with the previous one (model a boardgame character) was that it seemed obscurely limiting, while just making it "interpret a chess piece" has a huge range of possibilities, could be normal mapped, sculpted, environmental, character, whatever really.
I think it'd get a lot of entries if the specs were open enough to allow people freedom of style and design.

Justin Meisse

It's alot for me to search through but the victorian model pack and lightsaber challenges had plenty of participants.

Zwebbie
04-25-2007, 08:21 AM
I did a chess rook for the board-game challenge, but never finished because the entry was quite lousy. I actually wanted to make a complete set as a personal project, but never got around to it. Too bad there are exams coming up or I'd have given it a try this time too /images/graemlins/wink.gif .

Chess sounds fun!
There is something for everyone. Enviroment, character, monster.. anything can be done there. It can be sci-fi, steampunk, fantasy or realistic present day interpretations.

Emil Mujanovic
04-25-2007, 05:52 PM
Sounds like an interesting challenge, though I remember the fat bishop character with it's sidekick lugging around a huge ale barrel from the board game challenge.
Though a texture challenge would be awesome Hawken.

Take an old school (sprite based) point and click game character and make 'em 3d. Doesn't have to be a main character.

Seems fair. Lots of possibilities there too. People tend to make bad 3d copies of flat sprite characters. All megaman or sonic models for Q3 or UT have been flat and boring. Some things deserve a redesign.
