Me and Arshlevon had a great idea in the car on Sunday for a new comp: Redesign a board game character.

Any reinterpretation would work. You could do a chess piece, a playing card character, etc. I always love reinventing things.

2,500 triangles, one 512x512 color, and one 256x256 color

heh, if i could remember some old board game characters. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

i had an idea of a Metal Gear character challenge(after playing a game or two lately).
something like (weapon/skill) (animal name) or an emotion/idea. examples Revolver Ocelot, Vulcan Raven, The Fear, The Boss.. and make a character that exemplifies that attribute.

Zcubed
05-22-2006, 02:32 PM
On second thought, I think I'd prefer Snemmy's idea. Something a little more gritty and realistic would be nice after watching everyone churn out cute little monsters. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I feel like making a chess piece. Let's do it!

Snemmy, that's not so much an idea, but an idea for names. People could do pretty much anything. And if I remember, those challenges don't get as much participation.

If it's chess pieces or board game pieces, should the entries look like they could be pieces themselves or could someone enter a car and call it a replacement for the Monopoly car? Personally I'd say pieces would be better.

poopinmymouth
05-23-2006, 07:52 AM
My original thought is that it would need to be constrained to classic board games, Monopoly, Checkers, Mousetrap, etc. No DnD or Hellgate London, or Starwars monopoly. Also it should be vaguely recognizeable as a reinterpretation. Meaning that making a modern day Aston Martin and saying it's the monopoly car, would be out.

That's what I was thinking anyway. Also, like was already posted, I never said cute. You could reinterpret a Rock-a-doodle monopoly guy, hahaha.

I think only people who have entered and *finished* a contest should have say. I'm partially joking and partially serious. I've seen many a time where a contest is steered by a vocal few who end up not even entering or even if they do, not finishing. I realize things come up, but a great example is the last env challenge where it was steered to an env challenge by people who didn't even start an entry.

Obviously everyone should have input, as some people might not have entered yet because nothing has interested them, but maybe weight should be given to the people's votes who are most likely going to enter/finish.

Just a thought.

I still think the response for the last one was because it wasn't what people meant by 'environment challenge'. Not only did the envrionment folks fail to enter.. so did everyone else..

edit: I mean I think it might have got more response if it had been 'model a room of a haunted house' or something else that included floor, sky, walls.. environment stuff

This past contest was NOT chibi, as i hoped it wouldn't be, and I believe that's why so many participated. Leave the theme open ended to get people's creativity flowing, but give them guidelines to work with so it's a contest.

The "environment" challenge became something that no one had specifically mentioned. Then again, those people weren't mentioning any specifics. SO YOU ALL FAILED!!! hahaha..j/k, but could you imagine?

Moving on, when's this battle of the board going to begin, bitches?

Just to add my two cents about challenges; we always go with public opinion. Sometimes my judgement is a little off and I make it too challenging, other times we strike gold and the challenge is just right (polycount town, halloween PSP, SDdemon).

And yes, this is the official thread to talk about what should the next challenge! (although it was like the chest burster scene from alien)

I dont know a lot of board games that have characters that lend themselves to being redesigned for a game model. I can imagine chess pieces being redone, but how about a mutant soldier or cannon for risk? Will that be off limits. I think its hard to find clear limits in what is allowed, and what not? An Aston Martin might be out, but if its an oldtimer Aston Martin, it would fit with monopoly really well.

All in all, I think maybe we should just go for chess pieces. Not that my vote counts since I never started or finished any competition over here. Heh.

bearkub
05-24-2006, 07:32 AM
I'd like to drop my 2 pennies in here as well.

I started this forum on the idea of challenge and not contest. To be challenged to create something given an idea. Form-fitting the topic to what you WANT to model kinda nullfies that point. The original intention I had planned was to be given a subject matter, no matter how ridiculous, and produce something it out of it to give those not in the industry, but are trying to get in, an idea of what it is like to work out problems with modeling something that you may not be particularly interested in. Obviously, this place has taken on a life of its own since it began (and this is a GOOD THING /images/graemlins/wink.gif ).

As for the next event, I REALLY dig the game piece idea. I mean, damn, just scour Amazon for board games. Monopoly, Chess, Risk, Stratego, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders....hell, I can think of PLENTY to expend some creative juice on.

Keep this place going, folks! You have made it more than I expected. =D

ElysiumGX
05-24-2006, 09:19 AM
I think it would be cool to make the designs easily recognizable as board pieces. Like, require a base that fits in with the design. Going with chess pieces would be fun, and every base have the title of which piece it is. I like the custom chess boards you find in hobby shops.

poopinmymouth

Dibs on Mr Mint from Candyland.

I know it was my idea and I'm biased, but it really does sound like the majority is interested in the board piece redesign.

One thing we *could* do, is limit it to games from a certain manufacturer before a certain year. Honestly I would hope we could just say "use your own judgement" but I don't know if people would play nice. Obviously a game like Chutes and Ladders or Cooties would be ok. Warhammer 40k, or the He-Man edition of Uno, not ok. If you try to think of the spirit of "classic board games" like you would play as an eight year old with your parents and sibblings, that's the general idea that would keep this away from being a standard GIANT SPACE MARINE OMG BOOBS challenge. Or you could just have to post your idea in this thread and get the general consensus from Kub or someone who could be the judge of what would be appropriate or not, before starting.

What about limitations? I think 2,000 - 2,500 is a good poly limit, and one 512, one 256 is good texture. That gives plenty of room to play, but is low enough to still be managable as a side project.

i think the limitation of the boardgame character should be it has to be an IP created specifically for a boardgame. so no dora the explorer version of dont break the ice, but the orginal dude from dont break the ice would be fine. seams like a simple rule that would keep things interesting and there wouldnt be an era in game history contraint. to tell you the truth there might be some new boardgame IPs i dont know about that could be fun to make.
