As always I'll be taking time out of my busy shedule of tenticle mischief with japanese school girls, to try and co-ordinate our regular challenges.

Stepping out of the shadow of such a huge and energy-sapping chalenge as the one we just had is not easy, however seeing as I did nothing towards entering or running that challenge, I'm boucing off the walls just waiting for your suggestions.

So, next? More low poly? More high poly? Something with new software?

Like "sketch-up", wot I found the other day: http://www.sketchup.com/

Next challenge will start april 17th monday

the guys at cgchat are doing a low poly one.. no normal maps is the rule.

how about a modular environment like cholden shows in his tutorial?

MoP

yeah i wouldn't mind environment.
if it's starting next week though, i won't have time /images/graemlins/frown.gif

maybe we could hold off on a new comp until summer starts? all us students'll have time that way.

i gotta second that, i have absolutely no time because of all the artwork i need to do for finals ....

and i really want to partcipate in the next one

there was a rts unit thing once on cgchat...that let people enough freedom to do what they want (characters, environment, vehicle), is lowpoly, and vast enough to put an additionnal theme...

I second MoP on enviro

How about a cube contest? Who can build a cube with the least amount of polys, and texture it.

poopinmymouth
04-11-2006, 02:50 PM
Actually Arshlevon and I talked about doing a contest where you only get twelve triangles, and two 256x256 maps. You can use the 12 however you like, and it's whoever can create the most interesting and fun game asset.

I've wanted to try 3 sizes of an MMO monster. Same type, but different levels and details.

Large (2x player size) 1200 tris- 512 tex
Mid (player size) 600 tris - 256 tex
Small (1/2 player size) 300 tris - 128 tex

MoP

That sounds like a cool idea.

speaking of this...I remember that polycountville thing, and I was thinking, what about something that will be put ingame or something, I dunno if there's an easy way to put models with specs mentionned by Ely in rts or mmolike sp games (I bet it's legally impossible in mmo for obvious reasons)

EDIT : w00ps double post..was sure I pressed the edit button, not reply...ah well :P

Ferg
04-12-2006, 01:16 PM
its possible... though we wouldnt be able to get much more than static models in-game without a bunch of rigging and animation BS... which would probably take longer to do than it took to create the things in the first place heh

Hollowmind
04-12-2006, 01:34 PM
I like the monsters idea although those suggested specs seem a bit low.

ElysiumGX
04-12-2006, 02:52 PM
considering most people claim to have little time, and there would be 3 models involved...sounds fair enough. low means you'd have to get the most of every pixel, and no friggin normal maps.

vahl
04-12-2006, 04:03 PM
you could also pick up one size or more if you want to/have time to, so that people with a little spare time can still enter and have fun

Jackablade
04-12-2006, 10:22 PM
How about something DS Spec so I can have the unfair advantage for once.

Immo normalmaps should be allowed. Many people still have to learn normalmapping.. and cgchat allready banned them...

You don't have to use them and it would be very hard to take
advantage of them because of the low specs..

Maybe some non modeling competition would be nice? Like some sort of character animation or a special effects competition?
At least the animation part should be a nice practise for character modelers.

But as I have never contributed to any competition I shouldn't really make suggestions /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think it's leaning toward modular environment at the moment

Snowfly
04-14-2006, 06:43 PM
if we do the environment, set aside part of the budget for a centerpiece.. like statue in a cathedral, throne in a throne room, giant larvae in the incubator, etc.

MoP

Nice idea Snowfly, I second that.

one of cgchat's past challenges was something along the lines of create an MMO monster, and reusing the mesh create three texture variants to create different monsters... i think that'd be a fun take on the mmo creature idea... maybe do one where you have a small, medium, and large version of the same creature (baby dragon, young dragon, full grown dragon for example). Just keep the polycount / texture req's low so it's not something ridiculously time consuming (maybe even make all three creatures share the same texture?).

And I too like the idea of a bunch of modular / room based assets for a scene, like the PCville idea.... maybe everyone make a throne representing themselves... or perhaps a trophy along the same lines...?

I'm all for an environment comp. I have zilch in my portfolio for environments, and it would be a nice change from all the regular character comps.
I think modular environment sounds very groovy. I like asset re-use.

but I'd rather make an ashtray, or a box of cereal. so, it's sunday, and the environment/modular idea is still a bit vague to me. what is it we will be doing?

can i suggest something new and different....

Make a racing style game, using this http://www.candointeractive.com/gamedesign/car/

ElysiumGX and I have been working with it, and its very easy for anyone to make a car type game with either Max, Maya, XSI, etc.

we don't take too kindly to your type around here, boy! /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm too busy with a new job and my own project (see Lee's post) to spend time on this one.

Some people liked my specific MMO monster idea. Could we give that a shot after this deadline? Or Lee's suggestion. I simply don't want this forum falling silent again because of this round. And please no sluts with guns contests. At least make it a challenge with attention to personality or anatomy.

I don't actually think a destructable object challenge is the same as an environment challenge. I think the modular idea is probably closer to what people have in mind for environment

I'll agree. Nobody said -anything- and the threads were just locked out of nowhere. Seems pretty pissy to me.

ElysiumGX
04-29-2006, 02:41 PM
six moderators on this forum, and no one knows why the threads were locked.

btw Tulk, nice piano. Tho, it's so detailed, I'd hate to see it destroyed. For a game prop, a piano is a piano. No fighting near the grand piano! :P

And thanks Elysium. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Haha, I'll try to keep the fighting away from it, but things can get rowdy around here so ya never know. :|

I'm gonna try to finish it off sometime this week now that there's no rush I'm gonna get some extra homework in this weekend. Suppose I'll have to start up a new pimp thread. :|

I think low poly usually hovers in relms of 128 to 512 triangles, with 1024 triangles being for nice player models or bosses. Anything over that can have a normal map slapped on it and look like the million dollar man

Aye. The problem with the prop contest is/was timeing. 1: school finals, 2: crunch time 3: it ends the same time as the CG Chat contest.
