Hello I am working on a pracitice head, to experiment with facial animation, texturing and the like, so far I have the model all built and Im happy with it for what it is, but Im totally lost when it comes to doing hair, actually modeling it that it, whatare a few different techniques I could look at and try? If need be I can post a pic of what i got thus far.

Well, it really depends on the hairstyle and polycount you're going for.

Ditto.
Also this is a great way to see hair done well...

ok So what I gather then is this, that Using alpha planes will give me the flexibility to do what I want, but what I dont understand is if the planes are not attached, how do I make sure everything lines up easily, scalp different chunks of hair etc. And do i have to map the scalp and paint it as well as all the planes? so that you dont see chunks of flesh underneath? does that make sense?? I'll post a pic of what I got, thanks alot guys for the links very informative

Make sure they only fade out near the tips, a ways away from the skin. It also helps to give them volume at the scalp line instead of just planes.
If you can get the FFX viewer working, it really helps to see some great examples of hair done really, really well.
Sorting can be a pain, as noted in that thread, but that's basically a programmer/hardware issue. A bonus if you know how it works, but not needed for a portfolio.
