Has to be viewed on a black background since we have no alpha to work with.

alpha is fine, you can dump that in as part of the texture - R,G,B,ALPHA,SPEC

You'll have at least colorkey transparency on a handheld, i.e. everything that is a certain color (usually pink) is invisible.
