Hello all! I've been a long-time lurker on these boards, and figured it was about time I got more active. This weekly contest-thing is a fantastic idea.
Without further ado, here's my addition to the other great entries:

I'm looking forward to seeing this guy through all the way to the end! I welcome any critiques or comments!

just a quick update - added his accessory - a "yari," a good weapon for him to swoop down and skewer his foes with.

Yeah, very cool! I like his stance and the forms you used. Also an excellent weapon choice, I read that the yari was a popular samurai weapon. I like the striped pattern on his armor, also, it seems right somehow.
I'd say that if you wanted to add to your concept, it would be cool to add some more accurate feather pattern under the wings, just in color. I look at the great shape of those wings and I want to see the feather patterns.
And he still needs his daisho (swords)! Samurai ain't nothing without the daisho.

thanks for the input jzero! I will definately put time forth to put more polish (and daisho) into the concept art.
As for the model. it's sunday night and I don't have him finished quite yet. I really would like to get him finished before I post him up. Expect him either tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday at the latest!
Best of luck to everyone else with their models!

Just finished the model. He's about 1200 polygons untriangulated. Please let me know what you think! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great start!
But i mean that the arms are to long and the face not wide enough. Do you make the wings alpha mapped?

Sweet! He looks good. I have to give you some general praise before the nitpickery, because I tend to be really specific. I think the arms and legs look fine in proportion, and good job on the talons.
I think you could have used more polys, but what the hey. Don't forget to add the feathers at the back of his head, that does a lot for his cool look. Also, the curved gorget-type thing just below his neck should be there, it adds to the solid look of the torso. You wouldn't be wrong to add it as geometry.
Be sure and make the short sword shorter, it's almost as long as the big one. And the proportions of the horizontal and vertical blades of the spear should match the concept a little closer.
Definitely a good opportunity for alpha-mapped wings with nice edges. If you're texturing, keep WoW and Ultima X models in mind, and you'll be in good shape.
