hello conor,

first of all, your mapping tutorial is AWESOME man... i was waiting for this all my life... no, really it gave me a big push forward in my mapping skill. thanks to you...

i have some related quastions to your tutorial.

i made everything like you showed in the movie, also this "render to texture" step at the end... but i ended up with the 2 errors...
1. when i was ready to render it said "no related slot" but i figured that one out... so no problem here....
2. when you make that sky light, you just click on it, create one in the top view and put it over the model. well i did the same and my model ended up completly white... no shadows at all. so i went into the light properties and checked, under render, "cast shadows" but it took very long to render... and the shading looked rough... so i checked your movie again an saw that you did not check "cast shadows"... well i am a little confused now... can you help me? what did i do wrong?
also when you render, the shadowmap pops up immediately... or did you cut the "rendering frames" out of the video?

you also have to know that i am a totally complete NOOB in rendering, please do not expect any big knowlegde, when you try to explain me what i did wrong. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

please excuse my bad english...

would be nice if you can help me... i am totally lost in the woods here! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

please don't wonder if you find the same text in your mailbox... i just try to get a fast answer... have to finish my work.

Polycount Messageboards also have a nice private message feature. If you find his name in the User List and click it, it will give you the option of sending him a message directly.

I'm not Conor and I have't watched the tutorial, but maybe I can help. For skylights to work properly a few things need to happen. You need to add the skylight, which you did, and actual placement doesn't matter, just make sure your model is close to 0,0,0, the center of the grid.

Next, hit "9", the shortcut for Advanced Lighting. Change the drop-down menu to Light Tracer. Make sure it's active, and then try rendering. If it takes a long time lower the Rays/Samples to 50, and the Subdivide Down To option to 32x32 or 16x16.

If it's too bright try lowering the Multiplier on the skylight or darken the sky color.

Hope that helps.

Jehuty - FatAssasin's got it right, I had the light tracer turned on in the advanced lighting tab of the render options. Unfortunately that didn't show up in my tutorial, I should have mentioned it. Also - the render does take a few minutes, I edited out the wait in my video :-)

Glad you learned something from it.

yeah i was busy all WE long, so big thanks to FatAssassin for the help to get me along... also thanks to you Conor, again of course for that awesom tutorial and your answer... to be honest i am not really happy the way the lightmaps look an my model, but that has nothing to do with you guys... just have to play around a little with "advanced lighting"... /images/graemlins/wink.gif but anyway i will show you my resultes... /images/graemlins/wink.gif

so thanks again to all the help, i appreciate that very much...

btw. does anybody have a good tutorial for painting cloth crinkles? would also help me alot... /images/graemlins/smile.gif
