yeaaah... so instead of being asleep right now like i should have, i started sketching a civil protection officer. actually it was meant to be a new design based on the CP uniform but i just ended up sketching one from straight off from the game... i'd like to come back to this to tighten it up, but it's kinda fun as is /images/graemlins/smile.gif post your HL2 inspired/related doodles!

verry nice work gauss, i really like the design of these guys, really iconic, like stormtroopers

yeah, that's how i feel. looking at some of the art for upcoming games it seems as if HL2 has a more filmic sensibility to the designs of characters, levels, baddies, etc...anyhow, here's another drawing i did, this time it's a civil protection officer in riot gear (a riot being a great scenario i'd love to see played out in a mod or extra level)

I completely agree about these guys. I think a lot of their character is in the eyes and the reflection. They have such a cold look to them. Gauss hit it right on the head, more of a film design than games and I think that fits right in with this game.
Have the film rights already been sold? I bet it won't be long till we hear of The Rock starring in Half-Life. Seriously though, Ed Norton is perfect if they ever option this out to a film company.

Very nice Gausspants. I like the green eyes. I think her complexion is a bit muddy, but overall she looks nice. I like your initials on her pocket, really nice touch. 8-)

Sheen might have the look of gordon a tad more, but Ed Norton owns Sheen hands down. Christopher Lloyd is definitely a nice pick for the Gman OR perhaps for the bald scientist. I'd definitely see Morgan Freeman as Alyx's father.
Then again...all the characters in HL2 are based off real people...

alright, take the damn fancasting to general discussion. one more fancasting post and i'm deleting them all from this thread.
real people! I want to meet this...real alyx
Thats the absolute spitting image of her gauss nice.

Looking mighty fine. Felt very inspired playing HLČ
The Civil Protection guys look ace and Alyx looks even better. as Daz said, a near perfect likelyness.

Alyx is looking great Gauss. Maybe some highlights in the hair.
Other than the red streak in Alyx's hair I love them all. Or was that streak in her hair in the game?

uh oh brome, someone wasn't paying attention to the really nice character design touches in the game /images/graemlins/laugh.gif yes, she's got a single red streak in her hair... the streak and her eyes are the only elements with color. which i might redo the eyes again, i didn't want to go too saturated to make them look unnatural, but right now it's barely noticeable. but i guess i'd call that 'subtle'. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
and thanks everyone, i worked pretty closely from a screenshot i took to try and ensure a good likeness--it was initially going to to be much more loose but it just didn't do the character justice.
Did you pick up this Gauss?

Really damn nice book with lots of stunning Art in it. Theres also pics of all the actors they hired for ref. Including Alyx. It's pretty interesting.

Daz: my copy -finally- arrived today and i love it. i'm actually surprised at how hefty and, well, actually book-ish it is--prima has managed to print a really nice looking coffee table book that serves up great work (and some of the rather humble pieces from initial HL1 material /images/graemlins/smile.gif ) and it's chocked full of great stuff. haven't even gotten a chance to pick over it all, aside from art i really like laidlaw's outtakes being included.
and hell, who ever thought that there'd ever be a glossy book with a spread featuring a cs_office screenshot? and it looks good /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
i also enjoyed the italy screen paintovers... there is so much material here. anyhow, i'm back to trying to play HL2 DM (yes it just came out)

Excellent stuff Gauss, there's so much thought gone into these designs.
combine elite - twenty minutes in painter while the boss wasn't looking!!
he's referenced from page 235 of the prima guide.

nice one, Gmanx! i love all the combine guys. there's a great quote from "Raising the Bar" from Ted Backman regarding concepting the combine soldiers, something about how he didn't want to give them big shoulder pads like you always see because he didn't think they'd be tackling anyone /images/graemlins/smile.gif the puffy white combine elite guys are just fun.

What brush settings possacity flow ect do you use to make those "quickpainting" style :O

Badname - there's no such thing as a pityful attempt, as long as you learn from it! Practice is the key. This dude looks like he's peering into a fisheye lens - with his body receding back - which I like, it looks 'otherworldly'. More colour!
MAULOr - That looks like a still from an animation, the really creepy stuff you get from painting on glass using a stop-frame technique.
As far as technique goes, you could check out killing peoples' painting tips thread - but I forgot where it is :X
Any more?

i came up with that image by just looking at some headcrab refference and smudge painting... then i really gave it hard lighting so it looks like he's imerging from shadow... thats pretty much what i did.

Those are looking good, guass you do that in pencil and scan it in or is it all in a paint program? Btw any good tuts for doing drawings/concept arts like these in photoshop7?? I would realy like to learn to do stuff like this in photoshop /images/graemlins/frown.gif
gauss
12-07-2004, 06:49 PM
icewolve: they're done all photoshop 7 and a wacom tablet, completely digital. there's no special trick; they were done almost exclusively with a pretty standard brush, just set to varying sizes and opacities (with the exception of the feathery background on Alyx, that was a special brush).
as far as any seriously concrete advice i can give you, be sure to use reference. always always use reference if you can manage it. both civil protection drawings were done with a screenshot close by for reference, and the Alyx piece was done almost exclusively with reference to a screenshot i took in the game.
Gmax thats pretty cool. I would of liked to of see then wrinkles on his chest pad brought out since they caught my eye the post while playing but thats just my personal pref. I particularily like the glare you gave him, his stance is nice too. Gonna finish this one up or...
i need to paint more

haha! very nice, Odd--this is an all too familiar scene during CS:S. the crumpled terrorist in the corner, and the teammates on heightened alert trying to zero in on his executioner. very expressive lines, and the colors are spot on. great stuff /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Not to mention the bill on the wall. Thats awesome, I wanna try a CS:S piece. The ally dead in the corner like that is how I end up 3/4's of the time!
