View Full Version : Lowpoly elf girl

DemonPrincess

Hiya everyone! I'm trying to de-lurk a bit, LOL. /images/graemlins/blush.gif

Here's something I've been working on. It's a lowpoly elf girl (600 tris to be exact).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/wayuki/ember_smoothshaded01.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/wayuki/ember_flatshaded.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/wayuki/ember_smoothshaded02.gif

I haven't really decided on the colors yet, I was just testing. I got her unwrapped, so I will start texturing her soon.

KMan

I think that's a really good use of your polys there. For how low you are going, and what style, I'd almost scale the hands up a bit more. The same goes for the nose.

The proportions are nice and fit well with the style.

FatAssasin

Nice proportions. Looks good man. What size texture are you going to use?

She looks great DP (I hope you don't mind me calling you DP, DemonPrincess is just too long to type, though I just did so don't see why I'm complaining . . . but I digress,) I always love seeing you work, it's very fresh, sexy and stylish. I can't wait to see more. Keep it up Lady.

KDR_11k

The boots could use some more verts or at least a bit of rearranging to be less blocky.
Oh and are you still using Milkshape?

ElysiumGX
11-04-2004, 12:43 PM
Nice one, D. Piddy. Love those hips. The boots looks a little large from the side angle. Perhaps bring the back top section more towards her leg.

MoP
11-04-2004, 01:47 PM
Great style as usual, although I agree with KMan, the hands could be larger to match the bigger-than-normal feet.
I also agree with KDR_11k, a few more verts in the boots would round them out a little, at that size I think they should be slightly less blocky.
Also I think the face looks very flat from the side view, I think this is accentuated by the sharp chin, maybe just add an extra vert in the middle at the bottom of the face to round out the chin and jaw line in the profile?
Nice colours. Hope you get this little elf lass textured!
Looks great for only 600 tris, keep it up!

Cool, but the boots are a bit over the top. Scale them down to a little more normal I think and she'll be better, but still have the cute look.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I made the hands a little bit bigger and the boots a little bit smaller (especially in the side view). Here's what it looks like now (old version is on the left, edited version on the right):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/wayuki/ember_resized.gif

I tried adding a vert to the chin, but I thought it actually looked worse, so I left it be.

I also made an SDK if anyone wants it.
The file includes 2 versions of the model. One is segmented at the waist for the use in Quake 3: Arena, because that's what I intend to port her to if I get around animating her. The other version is the one you see in the thread. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You can pick up the SDK from this page:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/torquebimini/

Available formats are ms3d, 3ds and md3. She's mapped on a single texture sheet. I've included both a 256x256 and a 512x512 version in the SDK.

grid... Elysium: thats look cool, i dig the lace up clothes /images/graemlins/smile.gif not to sure about the tattoo, i think the arms could hold up without it. You may want to try adding more texture to the brown clothing, to really set it off from the skin. maybe some thickness would help it too (edges, slight shadows). those are some big ass eyes too, but they're kinda cool like that.

dig how you handled the hair snowfly... heh thats smart.

Awesome snowfly! I love how your painting style works on this model. Just great in the face. Moose and DH you guys are rocking my cock. I had to pick it up off the floor cause it got rocked off. Dh, your hair came out awesome, alpha some of it, PLEASE! Moose, I liked the skin tone of the wip you showed me last night a bit better, it was more blue ish. Rockstar, yours came out very cool, I like it. It has your typical face texture, and shiny metal bits, but thats what we all love about you! 8-) Now get a job slacker. Oh yeah, put fire in her nipples too. 8-)
Grindy, Could we see a shot at full bright? I think right now you might have gotten too deep into the detail work without doing enough broad scale light and volume. She could use some kind of overlay on the leather to pump up the interest level. Looking cool though man. 8-)

ElysiumGX
11-08-2004, 10:52 AM
Poop: Viewport shot from Wings. Figured out how to do full bright.

http://www.elysiumvisions.com/images/ember/emberwip4.jpg

Wasn't sure how to handle the lighting because I'm trying for a more simplistic character to match the mesh, but I'll try to hint at more shapes. I plan to add more to the leather. In fact, I think I'm going to wake til next weekend, and brainstorm what I should add to her.

moose: thanks for the advice. the tattoo is gone. I like big eyes, but not in the anime sense. Eyes really bring life to a character, I believe. Very cool metal designs on yours.

Snowfly: that's cool. very smooth texture. I think it's my favorite atm.

DH: Holy hell. Now I know what Poop means by lighting and volume. That's excellent.

Rawkstar: She's hot.

Awesome work everyone, but I have to crit the faces:

MoP
11-08-2004, 05:20 PM
wow tom, great start. your usual control of highlights and saturation there, but a totally different style from what i remember /images/graemlins/smile.gif
the hair is painted excellently. just needs some opacity-mapping on the front there and it will be perfect.
the nice rosy cheeks and highlighting remind me of old 1950's style childrens book illustration, which is nice /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just think the style of the body texture doesn't match the style of the face and hair... maybe try a different colourscheme on that? can't wait to see it finished though.
and hey, i'm on IRC right now!

MoP
11-08-2004, 06:52 PM
Good start Jeff, but if I were you I'd move the eyes outwards from the centre of the face, and maybe scale them up a little too - she's got a wide face on the model, and the eye placement and thinness of the mouth is making her look like she has huge fat cheeks at the moment. Also I'd use a more saturated highlight on the leaves, slightly yellowy-green, will give them a little more "life", if you know what I mean!

Makk: nice start, i like where you're going with the clothes. However as I think and other people have mentioned, this model doesn't really suit small eyes in a "natural" position... you have to go kinda extreme with the eyes to make the face look right, IMHO. Keep it up though!

Anyway, hmm, Ember is the name? Here's a WIP start on my skin i'm calling "Esmerelda" ... heheh

hmm, really cool so far.
Everbody in the list:

DHs was a bit unspectecular but nevertheless good. Some highlights may add somethhing to it

Rockstar, very cool idea and good contrasts. You should maybe add a color contrast like blue or something like that to get out of this "muddy" look. Also white highlight would help defining the shaes better.

Tom, good start, a bit too shiny if you ask me. maybe its because im in school right now, and the monitors are horribly calibrated.

mop, good start. generic, but good.

hmm when i find time i maybe contribute something to this thread /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Great work everyone! Keep it up! If I wasn't working on another skin right now, I would have given it a try aswell.

@Snowfly: I really like how you painted the hair and face. The outfit could still use some more detail, I think, but I like the overall feel to it.

@moose: Great work as allways. /images/graemlins/wink.gif I think it might look better though, if you added some blue/cyan tones, maybe even a little brown, to the skin to pull everything a little bit more together. You could also give her hair a hint of purple.

@mr_Rockstar: I love your skin. Your skin has a very classic feel to it.

ElysiumGX: I really like the simplicty you're going for design wise, but I think it would look nice, if you added some more wrinkles to the pants in the crotch area for instance. You could also add some wrinkles to her armpits.

@poop: Could you post some renders aswell? I'm very curious how you skin is going to look like on the model. (I can't wrap it around it myself now, because I'm currently at school.) /images/graemlins/wink.gif

@qubism: Do you know where I can buy that top? I think it would be a great addition to my wardrobe. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Great work so far. I like her curly hair and big shiny cheeks.

@jeffro: I'm with Mop on this one. I like the idea you're going for though. Green is one of my favorite colors and I really like the nature look.

@Makk: I agree with MoP about the eyes, but I really like the glossy feel her lips have. I think the outfit could use some more highlights and shawdows. But it may just be me, 'cause I love everything shiny and high in contrast. /images/graemlins/wink.gif /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

@MoP: The face is just great. It really has the gypsy feel to it. I can't wait to see the outfit, when it's finished.

CHOCLATE!!! and a bit further

oi paul :P yea i was after that kind of look for the face.
i tried a cool technique for the hair so it was quick and easy. the outfit was just a sketch and i polished it cuz i had no ideas in that moment. however i tried something different since shotgun allways adviced me to put more work in to the concept of the whole thing.

hey jeff. i dont know exactly how u work. maybe u lay out
all the details and then start shading the whole thing to
get depth into it. if so nevermind. if not id suggest to get
some shadows in there.

also u got that shadow from the
hair. notice something? i do. it doesnt work very well with
the other shading u did on the flesh. personally i dislike
it.
u prolly have just made a pure black ontop of it.
depending on your tonality id suggest to work with the
colors u use in the shadows. red or blue i your case its
reddish as i can tell from the knees.

back to the shading. i see a problem with not shading the
big shapes first and shading the details first.
has to do with the light situation. do u know where the
light is supposed to come from yet? it to be seen not just
on the overall shade also the details got that little
highlights that have to go with the light situation. im not
good at explaining.. well i hope it made a bit sence

further i have to say that u might want to reconsider the
way u layed out your leaves. its rather busy looking u might
want to concentrate on simple shapes. maybe bigger leaves
with accents of small leaves. or some sticks of wood. also u
can put in some color variation for an autumn look maybe ?
/images/graemlins/wink.gif

and makk heres something for u.

thanks for the help everyone.

Jeff Parrott
11-09-2004, 07:57 AM
Yeah I usually try to build up the character slowly. I just have had time to get certain sections done so far. I will start adding shadows in soon. I don't care for the shadow either, I'm going to just make that part of the hair more transparent and make a real light shadow. I like the idea of using red for it though. I'll rework the leaves a bit, they do get a bit jumbled at 256. I will see how bigger ones look instead. I like that idea. Also there is no real light scheme either and that really hurts this.

Thanks for the awesome crit qub. I really appreciate it. I'll rework most of this soon.

Poop: Hmm, I'm not liking yours so much - b1ll is right, the face is really masculine and I don't like that look.
the hands are great, but the armour on the chest and shoulders doesn't make much sense - how is it attached? also the cloth (or what is it? i can't understand what material that is supposed to be) around her waist and legs looks weird, i think the shadows are too bright and saturated.

NuclearTes: great start, nice pixelly-sharpness, keeps with the style of your previous skins I've seen but looks much more refined and technically accomplished - keep up the good work!

Thanks for the crits mop. The face is pretty much 100% where I was going with it. I wanted her to look mean, have an angular almost masculine face, and yet still be female. I feel personally that I hit that mark.
The pants are made out of bubbly transparent vinyl. I am going to go back in and work on them some more as I go, but for this project I really just wanted to go full out saturation do whatever-the-hell I want color and material wise.

Thanks for the feedback, I will definately keep it in mind.

Poop: I like the design of the boots but the red color of them does seem to clash with the rest of the skin. Although it does kinda look like you were going for somewhat of a yellow to red gradient look from top to bottom with her clothing. Perhaps if you had the top of the boots fade from orange to red then they would fit better with the rest of her clothing. Really nice skin though. I like the design of her and the detail. Just the color of the boots doesn't quite seem to fit right.

Tes: Nice job so far on her. Great consistency on the design of her clothing and her colors.

Mojo2k
11-14-2004, 12:06 PM
well i see where poop was going withthe red boots, It looks like a gradiant over the clothes red att the bottom going up to a orange at top, i think it just looks a bit off because its the only bit of clothing with no yellowish highlites, and the red saturation seems a bit difrent than on the other parts of the skin

hey hey! Welcome to the boards. I like your style. The only crit i have is that the high contrast of the metal and the low contrast of the skin texture is kind of throwing off the balance. http://www.lunchboxcrew.com/3d/images/pseudoember.jpg

Im not very experienced with this whole texturing business, but I wanted to give it a try.

One of the things I noticed is that with a 256x256 there isn't a lot of room to go add in detail. In result, I keep coming out with very smooth textures that dont have the crisp feeling that they need (especially in the cloth and trim bits). Im not really sure how to combat that when I only have 3 and 4 pixel widths to deal with.

I have been using a 1 pixel brush, and I guess that a 1 pixel pencil may give sharper results, but it seems like that would take me forever for a very simple texture.

I will keep at it, any crits or things I might not have noticed would be greatly appreciated!

MoP

Red Crane: cool work there, I really like the clothing design, I agree about the flesh being too low contrast compared to the dark clothing though.

Pseudo: Great start, I like the colours and designs. The 1-pixel pencil brush is definitely a good way to go for detailing 256 textures... I usually sketch in details with 1-pixel paintbrush, then go in and tighten up the details with the pencil tool using sampled colour from the surrounding areas.
For a (imho PERFECT) example of squeezing huge amounts of detail out of a 256x256 texture, take a look at the body texture Bobo_the_Seal did for his Bunker model:
http://www.bobotheseal.com/personal_work/textures/bunker-final.jpg

Your texture still needs some very thin dark lines to accentuate the features of the face and changes in material, I think.
Keep at it, she should turn out great!

MoP

poopinmymouth
11-17-2004, 11:04 AM
When talking about contrast, remember you have way more than just value to help sharpen textures. You can draw on hue contrast, warm/cool contrast, shadow color vs light color contrast, etc etc. Using all of them in conjunction will result in a sharper texture than just using values. I did a quick paintover to show what I mean. I used a warm highlight on the detail, and a cooler shadow, and like MOP said, used a one pixel brush extensively. A light right next to a dark, will make things pop alot more. Especially a warm light, next to a cool dark.

Really nice man. I like the bronzy bits the best. The change from yellow hot specular and the inclusion of the orange reflect light really sells the material. I like the detail and the irregularity in the edges also. Right now I like everything but the hair and the face. the hair looks dry and brittle, like female african american hair that hasn't been taken care of. Give it some sheen, and make it a bit less dry looking. The face still looks too doll like for my tastes. I think its the bright, smooth cheek highlights. They make the cheeks read like bulbous balls of plastic, instead of skin. Your leather is coming out very nice though. Finish soon buddy!

@ScoobyDoofus: You shouldn't think like that. I don't think you suck. If you think you suck, you will only feel worse. Try to look at the bright side of things, like:

"This skin may not be finished yet, but I will complete it."

"While I'm working on this skin I'm practicing my texturing skills. Because of that, I will be able to make my next skin faster and/or better than this one. If I continue to do this, I will become better all the time."

Besides, I really like your skin so far. It's very cute and her face is beautiful. You should be proud of it; you made it, it's your own creation. http://boards.polycount.net/images/icons/poly142.gif

BTW, if you suck, I suck aswell. I don't think I suck, I try to improve my skills. /images/graemlins/wink.gif /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm really an egomaniac normally, but my self-depricating humor is my way of keeping that ego in check! (just ask anybody who met me in Austin)

I think it looks nice as well. I just get hung up on ideas moreso than painting/rendering well. I'll paint and re-paint and re-paint an area of a texture sheet 4-5 times before I'm happy with the design, even if the painting is good.

OOh finnaly pior makes an update, really nice as usual but maybe the hair is little too bright and pulls too much attention away from the oh-so-cute-face?

nice work so far pior
saturation looks like. u might need to get some darkness in a
few areas to make certain things pop out more or get into the
background as said before.

Poop, yeah it's doable /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mop Jeff and B1llou, the head was great fun in the making. Rather quick to do too... Heads are fun /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Toom and Qube, I think see what you mean. I guess I need to take a break away from her to really see these issues tho...

But besides that its more or less done

Skinning this little model was a great side project... Any plans for a released pack?

It looks very nice Pior. Great job. My only complaint, and this might have been a conscious choice of yours, is that there seems to be too many open areas of flat color, and the only shading happens on the extreme areas of direction change. Its pretty sucessful, but I think I prefer the boot, where everything has at least a little shading to show the volume better.

Poop, yeah it was a kind of choice, I wanted to go for simplicity and for plain colors. But I feel like she *might* need some extra details like OldManFunks, which are simple yet detailled... Well I'd say that my version is more of a RTS asset then /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sundance, WHATS WRONG WITH THAT ? /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Toast, well she's a tough elf girl let's say

Rage, please just jump in! You don't need Max skills for this exercise, just good old 3dexploration and any paintpackage!

Anything new on Demonprincess' side?

Comment & critique away please, though I probably wont make any more changes. I'll just keep any hints in mind for my next skin.

Thanks!

i always enjoy seeing your work my man
the design is very good
very effective
i think some areas, like the dark boot "frame", look remarkably more detailed than others

ok does anyone see the amazing similarities?

Awesome job Scoobles. I am with shotgun in that it doesn't quite look as tight as it could be. Alot of areas look a bit blurry. My favorate area is the leg from the knee down. there is some great contrast going on there. Also your blacks seem to be a weak spot. the leather on her side just looks like white lines, and all the belts seem to be a light grey that doesnt respond much to light. Overall I really dig the soft shading and the colors, would just like to see it given that last bit of OOmph.
